The esoteric tale Erika told the group was beyond comprehension. While some of it were things they already knew, the other part was from her perspective as The Mercury of Old. From what she had learned through her ancient studies during the Epoch, the forbidden angel Raziel had originated from The Lost Era–the time before time, where everything existed in perpetuity with no life, death, or time. Due to an event lost to history even in The Lost Era, Raziel entered the era of the void and began construction of the black pyramids, monuments that would allow those of The Lost Era a one way trip to modernity–amongst other methods. Over the eras and eons many of the pyramids were either damaged or destroyed, and the fragments scattered all over the Cosmos and beyond. And in the glass case sat such a fragment, beautiful like the darkest obsidian which gave off a foreboding feeling that was terrible and wondrous at the same time.
“The issue is that these suckers can still channel the Lost Era, and potentially be built into machines to create artificial pyramids,” Erika elaborated as she pressed a couple of buttons to open the case. “Would anyone like to hold it?” The group–barring Will and 4276–were slightly terrified. It was obvious Erika was messing with them with a mischievous glee.
Will went right over and picked it up, the strange vibration of its essence giving him a weird feeling as he could have sworn he saw a smiling, shadowy figure out of the corner of his eye, in addition to Animus in the opposite corner. “Don’t worry, guys–it’s mostly harmless. In fact this is the one from Operation Roswell.” The others were stunned by this fact as they got closer to look at it.
4276 smiled as she stepped over and pointed at some of the runes etched into it. “If you look here, these popped up after it was separated from its pyramid, and some of the symbols resemble angel language,” she explained. Her voice was nice and pleasant–calm yet enthusiastic in a way that betrayed the notion of a government agent. “Will’s a bit of a people-person with the uniform on, so he was able to go into the UFO museum that had it at first and get to the bottom of where it had been transferred to. Honestly I was surprised to hear Will’s actually a tad shy in regular life.”
Sam chuckled. “Yeah, that’s his autism for you. Curiously, what was the deal with the museum thing?”
“The owners thought they had a supernatural meteorite on their hands, but then a group connected with the Fang administration appropriated it, so we had to sneak in and steal right out from under their noses.”
“That was one of the most tense moments of my life,” Will added. “And apparently the reason why I was needed was because of the Undead Plague Dryden had me injected with…” Will looked a little annoyed. “I didn’t realize it back then, but apparently the MIB didn’t have to get those top secret vaccines…”
Antares nodded. “So far the MIB is hesitant about working with ENCOM–which Sam, you need to get your shots…” he put in with a nervous chuckle, causing her to give him an incredulous look. “Basically we–and by ‘we’ I mean Dryden and Mads–sent Will in to see if the essence of The Reverse Serpent would react to the fragments.”
“A little risky if you ask me,” Valentin noted. “Why Will specifically, if I may ask? Surely you had others ready to go–no offense, Will.”
“None taken,” he quickly replied.
Antares shrugged. “It was the MIB’s call, as they felt he had the most potential chemistry with 4276 and her squad.”
4276 chuckled and nodded. “He’s not my type, but is a cool bean regardless.”
Sam snickered a little and patted 4276’s shoulder. “Did he get nervous and start stalling before heading into the museum?”
“A little, but he sucked it up and went for it.”
“Good job, Boyo,” Sam complimented as she patted his shoulder next.
“Thanks,” he replied with a smile.
Valentin cleared his throat as he had some interesting stuff to say in regards to the fragment. “The pyramids have interesting properties aside from being from The Lost Era. As you all well know by now, I used the pyramid here to acquire The Vermilion Manticore for Bethany as a part of Sebastian’s plan to create a super soldier for The Eternal Order, one that he would use to help spearhead his new world order–of course the plan hinged on stealing Will’s potential for ULTRAMagic…”
Sam turned into Morrigan and looked at Valentin with an inquisitive look. “Hold up, that sounds like Karnage’s failed plans for The Tyrant War…”
Valentin nodded as he went through his old deck of hexes. “Indeed it was, as that was back when Sebastian was loyal to Karnage… Ah, here it is…” Valentin tapped one of his cards, causing a smaller fragment to appear on the table. “This fragment was given to by The Crimson God to allow me and The Xanthous King to sneak in and carry out the plan. And Sebastian was desperate as the ‘dream walking’ abilities of the manticore are quite powerful–Will and Bethany can attest to that." Both of them nodded in response to this.
Barry stepped over and picked up the 10 inch fragment and levitated it in his hand. “Curious, I wonder where he got this one…” His eyes glowed bright blue for a second as the stone spun wildly in the air above his palm. “Yes, but who did it transport…” he said to it, growing a little impatient.
“Anyone familiar, Barry?” Kyu wondered as he held his hand just before it as it continued to spin.
He sighed and stopped spinning it, setting back on the table. “I’m not sure, but it definitely belongs to The Crimson God… Will, can I see that fragment for a second?”
“Sure?” He said as he handed it off to him.
“Going to figure out who came through it?” Antares asked.
Barry nodded and stepped off to the side of the room. “Yes, but it may take me a moment…”
“Well, perhaps he can make heads or tails of it,” Erika commented with hope in her voice. She then picked up the smaller fragment and nodded as she inspected. “We were trying to figure out how you got in so easily, Valentin…”
“And it’s something I never want to do again,” he said with a shudder. “The nightmares I saw while passing through that strange corridor still haunt my dreams to this day.”
Kyu gave him an incredulous look. “Valentin, those are my people you’re talking about…”
“Well you’re quite eerie in and of yourself, Kyu!” he declared, causing some laughter. “Just look at you–what were you originally supposed to be that prompted a form like that?”
Kyu sighed with a chuckle. “Honestly? I don’t remember… Like I said, It's hard to articulate Lost Era stuff in this era. I think I might have been a serpent or a giant worm? Possibly? It’s so difficult to recall…”
The group nodded, as while the resemblance was not there, they could definitely feel either or for some reason. Barry then hummed with excited electricity as he walked back over and handed the shard to Erika so she could set it back on its pedestal and back in its case. “I figured out who came through that pyramid, or at least two of the most likely candidates: Animus and The Lost Shadow God.” There was more nodding, as it was very fascinating–even if some amongst them were not sure what that meant.
“Who’s this ‘Animus’ person? Bethany cut in. “I’ve heard Aalders and Antares mention him in relation to Virus X…”
Antares leaned against a wall and crossed his arms. “He’s a bounty hunter with the ability to slide through reality we’ve employed alongside GREANADIER to explore The Commercialverse…” He could see everyone looking a little confused barring Will, Orion, Erika. “Haha, I guess we’re discussing that too… To keep it brief, within the Dream Realm is a small Cosmos where the universe of commercials exists. If something’s had an ad, that ad exists there as its own universe–exploration is fifty-fifty on safety. Now the reason why it’s relevant is because we have a contact there named Madame Synthia… yes, Will, that ‘Madame Synthia…’”
He nodded, a little beside himself. “So that’s why I’ve been getting those weird DETHBOTS dreams…’
“Animus has been talking to Synthia and we found out that that godawful Audoin originally came from The Commercialverse–specifically a DETHBOTS universe–before he ended up in Universe-231218 and started causing all sorts of havoc–Honestly he’s like a really messed up evil Superman, ha! And don’t worry, we’ve been keeping Scotty and the Azoth Mages informed this past month.”
“There was a lot of talk about that before I left my home universe in Somnium,” Orion put in. “Have you guys heard of something called ‘The Star Eater?’”
Antares nodded. “Yup–Synthia’s void patron, but we’re not sure how. From what we’ve been told only gods and ar’ton can be void patrons…” he then tilted his head towards Will for him to speak.
“It’s not impossible for other entities advanced enough to fulfill the role,” said Will. “Mads alluded to others beyond gods and ar’ton for some void callers.
“Well either way he’s on our side… despite how terrifying he is…”
Orion nodded and went to his father’s side. “All of this stuff is spooky if you ask me, and is another reason why I wanted to come here–it’ll keep you up at night.”
“Oh!” Barry interrupted. “Will, before we get off topic–be careful around The Lost Shadow God. He’s a rogue that never directly opposed us, but at the same time we were never quite sure what his goals were–he was a bit of a schemer.”
Will nervously nodded, then looked at Kyu who nodded back at him. “Right… So anyways, the shards! Erika, do you need us to go find them or what?”
“Glad you asked, Will,” she said as she put the smaller shard into its own case. “No, as we’ll take care of that. The reason why we brought you here is to bring you into the loop of what we’ve been up to and what we’re looking to do. What we need you to do is keep your eyes and ears open, as we are certain you’ll inevitably cross paths with Audoin no thanks to Karnage–or ‘Ultinn-Lacksus’ as he’s going by now. We’re going to be working more closely with The ULTRAMagic Guild, The Dark Divers Guild, and The Azoth Mages–as Audoin is incredibly dangerous and will stop at nothing to gain all the power he can–you can see why Ultinn is working with him…”
“And the MIB will also be more active with The League and its allies,” 4276 added. “Given that this is crossing over into our territory of dealing with PSAA and whatnot. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, 333–no doubt about it.”
“Haha, you’re telling me…” Will said as he exhaled with his hands on his hips. “You’re throwing yourself into the heat of things, Haze.”
“Yeah, I get that,” he said with a chuckle as he brought Will’s hand up to talk. “I don’t even think The Eternal Church knew what was going on…”
“Doubtful based on what Lia told me,” Valentin remarked as he got up after getting all of his cards put away. “Sylvia and Delphine have been keeping a close eye on all of this and I think it’s safe to say our lives have been changed forever–no going back now.”
There was a moment’s pause as the group silently accepted that, subtly nodding. Barry then remembered something that would be reassuring… to a degree. “Well, if it helps; The Sepulcher God is willing to help us with this Auodin and Ultinn issue–he’s agreed to… he’s…”
“What’s wrong, Barry?” Morrigan inquired.
Barry stepped away, paced a little, then walked back to the group with a worried hum of electricity. “He made The Hydra of Old an offer we couldn’t refuse: In return for him helping us deal with any Lost Era threats and providing what he knows… we had to let him roam free in The Night Realm…” There was a stunned silence, as the others were not sure what to think.
“So he’s free now?” Orion asked, straight to the point.
“Not quite. The Hydra of Old made the condition that he has to stay in The Night Realm.”
Valentin shook his head, incredibly nervous. “We’re playing with fire here… He may recognize the threat we’re dealing with, but he still wants to usurp God at the end of the day…”
Erika had a stern, yet understanding look on her face. “As bad as this is, him I trust–as crazy as that sounds… Good lord, God made the wrong decision…” she muttered towards her circumstances. There was a whole conversation that could have been had around that accusation, but now was not the time for it.
Kyu grumbled as he stroked his chin. “Can we at least ask him about this stuff like right now?”
“Of course we can, it’s a part of the conditions–and we even made The Night Realm sort of neutral territory for both sides,” Barry answered with certainty. “Also Kyu! You really need to come to The Night Realm with me and meet your new brother–Beauregard!”
Kyu stuttered over his words given Barry’s sudden shift in mood and topic. “Barry–I think we got bigger things to worry about at the moment!” He then realized what he had said and was even more confused. “Wait, who’s Beauregard?”
Barry hummed with excited electricity. “Well he’s not actually our brother, but he was there for me when I ended up in The Night Realm after I tried and failed to reincarnate into the second phase!”
Kyu was confused, mixing up their history in The Lost Era with the history of the Cosmos. “Oh right, forgot you actually ended up as a primordial… What were you doing all the way in an Overflow Realm like that though?”
“It’s a long story, brother…”
Bethany then got up and went to the door, looking a little impatient. “Guys, as fascinating and informative as all this stuff is–can we go to Zarnak’s birthday party? Seriously, this stuff is bumming me out…” This made the group laugh and chuckle with sympathy.
“Sure, Bethany,” Antares replied. “So yeah, that’s the skinny of what we’re going to be focusing on going forward–the Audoin and Ultinn stuff. Let’s roll, guys.”
“42, you coming along?” Will asked.
“Sorry, but I got work, annoyingly…” She then went to a table and grabbed a blue and gold birthday present she handed to Will. “Give this to Zarnak and tell him happy birthday for me.”
Bethany smiled, but realized something she did not get a chance to mention. “42, real quickly–that suit is cool–but dang girl! Aren’t you sweaty under all that rubber? I’ve seen cosplayers have their suits load up sweat…”
4276 laughed. “Oh no, don’t worry–this suit breathes and I don’t wear it off duty. We have some pretty wild technology at the MIB,” she said as a pearlescent portal opened up for her.
Bethany shrugged. “Alright then.”
“Perhaps it’s polymateria?” Valentin suggested.
4276 paused, not quite sure herself. “I’d have to ask. See you guys later!” she said as she stepped through the portal, with it vanishing behind her.
Erika smiled and shook her head as she went back to make sure the fragments were properly stored away. “Tell Zarnak happy birthday from me too.”
“Will do,” said Antares as the group filed out the doors. “Now let’s go see if they have any cake left for us, haha. Also Valentin–where’s Ensio?”
“Sylvia’s aviary resting up,” he answered as they boarded the lift. “He went through a lot for a crow, no two ways about it…”
