Given that everyone needed time to calm down and prepare, the banquet was to be held the day after the next day. Will was a little nervous that day following Sebastian’s attack, as he was going to be presenting to General Jerald Lundberg himself to receive his honors. Thankfully Antares was tasked with spending the day with Will at his house to get him ready. It was as simple as the two practicing and Antares reminding him of the ‘shake, take, and salute’ procedure. Antares also gave him a rundown as to why he was being promoted to Specialist, and Mads had also joined this conversation given his experience with ENCOM. Specifically Will was being promoted for his ULTRAMagic and membership in The ULTRAMagic Guild. While a little unconventional, Will was deemed a special asset given how rare ULTRAMagic was on Earth. And given that General Lundberg and Aalders were both members of The League, it was a no brainer.

Everyone was so proud of Will, and Sam made him call his parents to tell them the good news, with Orion begging his father to do so (when he did not need to). While Will could not talk about the specifics (mainly the shadow constructs or the volcano beam), Antares gave him the go ahead to talk about his promotion. Will’s parents were beyond happy and proud of their son. They could not just rush out to Witchhaven the day of the banquet, so Will promised that he, Sam, and Antares would pay them a visit the next day. Antares noted that the event would probably be filmed regardless if they wanted to watch the footage. Following the phone call, Buster had finally returned–having spent the day with Valentin, Lia, and Odo–and Antares had Randalph give Will a haircut and ordered the Private to shave. While Antares’ squad was fairly casual, Will was going to be spic and span for the banquet. Will complained as his hair was trimmed, but Randalph–skilled at giving haircuts due to the obvious–insisted given that his facial hair would grow back eventually.

The next evening the whole group put on their good clothes and headed off to Witchaven. Going to the rustic, bustling town without having to rush off to Camelot was relaxing for Will, and he stepped out of Sam’s car in full uniform at the firehall parking lot to be greeted by his whole squad. Antares, Zack, Satsuki, Vladislav and Adrien were there–and they even managed to track down Ryota so he could also be there. And of course the others welcomed Sam with open arms, happy to have her on board. Heading inside as the sun was beginning to set, the Witchaven fire hall was like any other, with concrete floors, nice wooden walls, and plaques detailing the accolades of the fire department and the various agencies and services across Witchaven. Will, the squad, and the group took a seat at the tables, as things were not quite ready yet.

As Will tried to relax at the long table (his anxiety naturally still hanging around), he glanced around as classical country music played over the room’s speakers–General Lundberg’s choice. He could see his commanding officers, their friends, and some of the local veterans of Witchaven who were happy to hear of Will’s accomplishments. Ellen was also there and found Will to give him and Sam hugs–congratulating Will on his achievements. She also brought him over to speak to the veterans. Despite Will’s endearing awkwardness, the veterans could tell Will was a true, red-blooded American with a sense of heroism and justice. Given that magic was not really a thing when they were in service, they asked Will to perform some of his magic. Will snapped his fingers and created a flame, then focused on his hand and created a small snowball. It was quite impressive and the veterans could easily see Will employing those skills while on duty.

Faustus, Mira, and Mayhem had run a little late–and thankfully Mayhem improved his human disguise to make it look like he was renaissance enthusiast rather than a quirky fellow who felt the need to cosplay wherever he went. They were followed by Zoltan, Morana, Vlastimir, and Ekaterina–with Vlastimir going and giving Will a big, brotherly hug as he went to sit back down. Before they could exchange pleasantries, Aalders called Will over to near the stage as the ceremony was about to begin. Mads and Dryden were there, making sure Will was fully ready as Lundberg stepped up to the podium. General Jerald Albert Lundberg himself was a strong, older gentleman with brown eyes and receding gray hair. Despite his face having wrinkles and showing signs of old age, his presence was still commanding–albeit he still had an air of witty humbleness to him.

The speech he had prepared was hampered by the fact that he could not discuss the particulars of The Red River City Incident for obvious reasons, but that did not stop him from emphasizing to the gathering that Will had gone above and beyond. Will was given his cue to approach the podium and was presented with the Distinguished Service Cross, and Lundberg detailed how he was promoted Specialist effective immediately. After shaking Lundeberg’s hand, accepting the honors, and saluting each other; Will stood there for a second to show his award, receiving a round of applause and cheers from his squad. Once he went to sit down, Lundberg made some closing remarks before everyone went to go get their food.

“...in all my years of service, I have never seen quite an act such as Will’s,” he stated, his voice being middle of the road in terms of highness and deepness and little aged. “If I had my way, there’d be a special award for Will right here and now!” His positive attitude warranted some chuckles. “And to think Will is under Aalders’ command–quite the accomplishment for the kid!” There were a few laughs and Aalders shook his head with a smile on his face.

Dryden felt the need to yank Lundberg’s chain in Aalders’ defense. “Well considering how gungho your ousting of Hector Fang was, a little insight from the younger generations wouldn’t hurt.”

Lundberg did his best to keep himself from laughing aloud, causing others to chuckle some more. “Well given how old you are I might as well be the younger generation!”

“So does that mean I’m still using training wheels by comparison?” Aalders snuck in, eliciting more laughter.

“Well you’re a lucky whippersnapper, as Lundberg refused to use his–he did not need such handicaps back in his day,” Dryden quipped, poking fun at the mentalities of Lundberg’s generation.

“You gentlemen are just full of it tonight, aren’t you?” Lundberg retorted with a chortle. “Go ahead and eat, everyone!”

After getting his food and returning to the table, Will noticed someone interesting who had just appeared beside Mads (who had been sitting across from him). “Oh, Nosmirc–when did you get here?”

He smiled as he tucked a napkin into his shirt. “Oh I just so happened to be free tonight and wanted to see you receive your honors–that was quite the show back in Red River…”

“Easy, Nosmirc,” Mads put in. “We don’t want to spill too many details…” there was a double meaning to that that seemingly only they knew.

    “Don’t worry, Mads, I won’t…”

Antares could sense something was up with Nosmirc, and he was not completely oblivious to the mystery surrounding him in regards to the Dark Divers Guild and The ULTRAMagic Guild. He leaned in, having sat next to Sam who was on Will’s right side. “Will–the families of Solomon Grant Elementary put together some gifts for you…”

Will felt a feeling of joy overwhelm him and a tear nearly came to his eye. “Aw, they didn’t have to…”

Orion (on Will’s left side) nodded. “Well of course they would, dad. Some of my friends at the school kept calling me, asking when you’d get back.”

“They didn’t send me money, did they?”

“Yeah, some of them did,” Antares answered with a chuckle. “But it’s mostly just small gifts and thank you cards”

Will had a big smile on his face as he rubbed his arm. “Aw jeez…”

“Make a rainy day fund, Will,” Vlastimir suggested.

“You know–I was just thinking of that.”

Sam then patted Will on the back. “You did good Boyo.”

Nosmirc swallowed his food and cleared his throat. “Will, I couldn’t help but notice you got taken off guard the other day–and while your void magic is very good for a beginner, it could use some work…” He could see Mads watching him and laughed a little. “Would you be interested in me giving you some lessons here and there? I’ve worked with other void callers before, and I think I can give you some good pointers…”

“Well, I think your previous ‘student’ would have begged a differ…” Mads snuck in.

Nosmirc looked at him and sighed, asking him ‘what the deal was’ in the higher dimensions. “Well if Will is interested, who are we to say no?”

Will thought about it as he ate some more of his food. “Well, Mads–I wouldn’t mind getting a little help… I mean your direction is good, but your style of teaching is a little complex…”

“Gee, I wonder why that is,” Nosmirc quickly quipped in only a way Mads would notice. He knew The Undead God was not Will’s true patron, nor was it The Grave God…

Mads exhaled and shook his head. “Alright, alright–I’ll accept fault there. Nothing too crazy, alright, Nosmirc? He is just a beginner after all…”

Orion studied Nosmirc for a second and nodded, despite his concern. “As long as we get to talk about it later, Mr. Nosmirc.”

He was a little surprised by that declaration. “Oh, um, sure, Orion. Whenever you want–just let me know. Ahem, Will–Thank you. I promise you won’t regret it, and I’ll make my lessons easy and digestible for you.”

Sam was a little nervous, but she put on a supportive attitude so as not to worry Will. “There you go, Boyo,” she said with a pat on the back. “I’m sure it will go fine, because Nosmirc is quite the void expert after all…” Sam had the strangest feeling she had met Nosmirc before, but she just could not place it.”

“Oh, Will?” Antares interjected. “Did you leave Haze at home?”

Will nodded. “Yeah, as I imagine I shouldn’t bring him here–you know?”

    “Ah, good call… hopefully he’s not bored…”

Haze–in fact–was a bit bored waiting around for Will and the others to get home that night. Once Will entered the doorway he went right to him and turned into a nice pair of pajamas. Trevor, Nathaniel, and Adelaide also swung by to congratulate Will on his honors and promotions. After saying goodnight to Buster, Olivia, Antonio, and Randalph–Will took a seat on the couch and turned on the television, joined by Kyu, Sam, and Orion. It was a simple night where they just relaxed and took it easy. Will still wanted to go back to The Unlight, but he could not deny sitting down and taking it easy with his family was something he had been yearning for. There was so much adventure back and forth in the four months he had spent in The Unlight–and to come back to Sebastian attacking Camelot? Suffice it to say he needed a little bit of a break.

Sometime after everyone had fallen asleep, Orion tiptoed out of his bedroom, down the stairs, and retrieved his coat. Once he was all dressed up, he went outside into the cold, late autumn air. He stepped over into the part of the yard overlooking the valleys and gazed out at the beautiful wilderness, the moon brilliantly lighting everything up. It was incredibly nippy and he could see his breath, but he was waiting for someone. Eventually a man in a long coat showed up with a lantern casting a soft light and walked down the road and over to him. It was Nosmirc who was quite honored to share that beautiful night with him. While quite the odd meeting place, he owed it to Orion given what he had proposed to Will.

“Good evening, Orion,” Nosmirc said as he lifted his hat. “Quite the beautiful night tonight…”

“Hey, Nosmirc… So I guess I should get straight to the point, shouldn’t I?”

“So you’re in the know too, kiddo?” Mads said as he appeared on the opposite side of Orion.

“Oh, hey, Mads… you want to talk to Nosmirc too?” He nodded, with Orion shrugging. “Alright then. Um, Nosmirc? I know you’re actually The Crimson God.”

Nosmirc steadily nodded as he got out a thermos and poured himself some hot, tomato soup. “Well yes, I am… how did you find out about that? Did someone tell you? Mads?” Mads shook his head.

“It’s just something I can sense–and picked up on through the way you interact with Blood-Wraith,” Orion answered. “Remember, I come from Somnium…”

Nosmirc nodded. “Oh yeah, Universe-SP42Z if I remember correctly… well a menger sponge to be more specific, but details…”

“I imagine he wants to know what’s going on with you, Crimson,” Mads added, with Orion nodding.

Nosmirc took a sip of his soup, the warmth feeling good on that chilly night, and helping to keep his nerves at ease. It was quite the surprising conversation after all. “Well I mean it’s just that Will needs help and whatnot…”

“Of course he does, as his void magic is a little sloppy,” said Orion. “But I want to know what you’re up to… You were a member of The Eternal Order. I’m already worried because of The Lost Era stuff and that battle between Leif and The Lich of Old–so this is not helping my anxiety…”

Mads shook his head at Nosmirc. “Crimson…”

Nosmirc took another sip of his soup and sighed. “I don’t know what you know about this, Orion, but I am Will’s true void patron, not Distortion’s…”

“So what are you up to then? Why isn’t dad working with you?”

“Well that answer’s straight forward, sport,” said Mads as he squatted to rest his legs. “The Goolubber God had a crush on him back in the Epoch and knew Crimson was nothing but trouble. And since she’s busy, The Grave God was going to step in, but I was insistent on doing it given the path Will went down… and I have to question Grave turning Will into Dullahan at birth…”

Nosmirc paused for a second, giving Mads an incredulous look. “Hold up–that was his doing? Why exactly?”

“Really? You of all people are going to ask that after that little stunt you pulled with Will and Bran?”

There was a moment of reflection for Nosmirc, as he realized that he had potentially done more harm than he realized. “I wasn’t trying to recruit into The Eternal Order–while I made that my excuse, in reality I was enraptured by my own mania for Will, a little bit before I came to my senses…”

Orion seemed confused as he glanced back and forth between the two. “But why did dad turn into a… never mind, I’m just going to assume it’s adult stuff. Crimson, why did you turn on The Eternal Order?”

Nosmirc went silent for a moment, drank some more soup, and sighed. “It’s a long story, but the short of it is that I finally got tired of Karnage stabbing me in the back emotionally and called it quits… You want to hear the full story, don’t you?” Orion quietly nodded. “That’s what I figured… Mads, I would like to teach Will my void spells.”

Mads stroked his chin for a second. “Tell you what: Tell Orion your story, and prove to me you’re serious about all of this. You do that and Goolubber, Grave, and I will think it over–sounds good?”

Nosmirc took one last sip of his soup and slowly nodded. “Fair deal, I suppose. Alright, Orion–this is a long story, but I’ll do my best to condense it. There’s some lead up to this, but I’d argue it all started when Valdemaras returned to Karnage’s tower after failing to secure the Tower of Babel and capture Buster for that dumb ‘false Tyrant God’ plan Karnage had cooked up…”
