Blood-Wraith actually held somewhat true to his word over the course of the following days, sticking to his house and avoiding the guild as a whole. He had not left the guild, but rather was taking it easy after what had just occurred. Blood-Wraith and Tiberius were not truly mad at each other, rather they were overwhelmed by Valerie’s tenacity. On the second day of Blood-Wraith’s impromptu hiatus, Aureolus was finally able to go talk to him. Blood-Wraith had been avoiding visitors, but this time he had lapsed on the spell he had cast to keep people out.

Aureolus went up to his friend’s bedroom door and knocked. “Blood? Can I come in?” he called out.

    “Sure…”

Stepping inside, the room was the usual mess of clothes, toys, books, and papers. “Hey, Blood. How are you doing?”

Blood-Wraith sighed a little as he paused his video game. “Did they ask you to come check on me?”

“Nah, I said I'd do it myself,” Aureolus replied as he sat down next to him. “So, what are you playing?”

“ACR Tournament Fighter. I was trying to play GRO again, but ran into an utterly terrifying section. I see why it’s labeled as for adults now. Mom and dad are losing their minds over me trying to play it, heh…”

“Yeah, I can imagine. Wasn’t Tournament Fighter one of Zasiel’s favorites?”

“More the sequel, but yeah. I tried calling Gabriella to see if he was free, but apparently he’s super busy now. It’s a bummer because I really want to see him again.”

Aureolus nodded as he straightened out some of the game cases strewn about. He noticed the eerie metal case of Grave Requiem Overkill. Just touching it gave him a strange feeling, like he was holding something truly alien. “Well, here's hoping his schedule eventually clears up. So Blood, what have you been up to these past couple of days? I guess Eloise caught wind of your spat with Tiberius, as she’s been swinging by to see if you’re alright.”

Blood-Wraith frowned a little, as that implied she was spying on him again. “I’ve been playing games and watching this one occult-themed hero anime I’ve been wanting to check out.” He then resumed his game, with the energetic, hard rock soundtrack playing over the television speakers and filling the room. This was accompanied by the sounds of the characters fighting each other, with impacts and crashes. “I can’t stop obsessing over Kerr and Astra. They feel weirdly familiar to me and I can’t place why…”

“Strange indeed…” Aureolus concluded. “Blood, can I ask what’s got you so worked up? The battle with the Lich I get. This though?”

    “Everything…”

    “Everything?”

Blood-Wraith groaned as his character got knocked out of the stage, causing him to lose the round. “Being a knight is a pain in the rear. You’ve got work to do, duties to maintain, nobles and politicians to talk to, Theobold’s been ordering me around, there’s all of these rules…”

Aureolus snickered a bit. “Sounds like you’re a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I mean, Blood, why didn’t you just decline Uncle Englehart’s offer all those months ago?”

“Aureolus, you don’t just turn down the king himself.”

“Okay, but Uncle’s very understanding. Why not just go talk to him and say you’re not feeling up to being a knight at the moment?”

That was a fair point, but Blood-Wraith felt conflicted about it. “That feels like being a quitter…”

“No, it’s not. No one will look down on you for admitting that you feel overwhelmed. Honesty is a virtue, Blood.”

    “I… I suppose you’re right.”

“And am I to assume this tension you’ve been feeling is what’s causing you to butt heads with Tiberius?”

After returning to the main menu, Blood-Wraith set down the controller, got up, and went over to the window. “I thought the guild was going to be all fun and games, saving the Cosmos on the side, but no! It’s all rules. Rules rules rules…”

“You were hoping to get away from your knightly duties, weren’t you?”

Blood-Wraith paused and stared at Aureolus for a moment. “Sometimes I forget that you spent 20 years in my basement.”

“17, but who’s counting?” They both chuckled at that. “Blood, I think you need to relax a little and go with the flow.”

“A little late for that… besides, how can I relax when things are all over the place?”

Aureolus reached over and shut the game console off, having spotted something in the distance outside. “You need to find your zone, where you’re at peace with the Cosmos. Trying to force results never leads to anything good, just more frustration.”

“Yoshihiro said something similar to that. Dang aura mages having a point, as usual…”

The conversation was interrupted by a fire hawk tapping on the window with its beak. “Hold on Ignus, I’m coming,” Aureolus said as he went to open it.

Blood-Wraith watched as he took the rolled up letter from the bird’s right foot, scratched his head, and sent him off again. “So what’s it say?”

“Hum… it looks like it’s an anonymous tip saying that Eloise is heading towards Shadowland…”

“Oh jeez, come on!” Blood-Wraith lightly panicked as he grabbed Aureolus by the arm and dragged him out of the room.

Rushing over to the guild hall as Golden Dragon, Blood-Wraith and Aureolus were met by Weaver, who was already to go. Tiberius tried to tell the three that Eloise was not actually at Shadowland, but they all rushed out before he could. Thankfully Serjiel and Yoshihiro volunteered to accompany the trio and hopefully catch up to them before they made it to their destination. Blood-Wraith had taken off as Indigo Wolf, worrying Yoshihiro, but Serjiel had a plan. He snapped his fingers and summoned his motorcycle, with the roar of its demonic engines subsiding as it pulled up to them. As Yoshihiro hopped into the side car, Serjiel put on his goggles and told him to hold on tight, as they were going to have to put the pedal to the metal.

Blood-Wraith led the charge past the vast plains and fields down the road to Shadowland, with Weaver in his beast form that resembled a giant hound made of molten rock, and Aureolus in his own Indigo Wolf form close behind. Despite the sense of urgency he felt, Blood-Wraith was enjoying the thrill of blasting forward, with the wind running through his fur. Upon reaching the halfway point, Blood-Wraith caught something out of the corner of his eye that caused him to suddenly halt, leading to Weaver and Aureolus crashing into him. Once they untangled themselves, they walked over to a series of large boulders and were greeted by a familiar face as they each reverted back to normal. Eloise was sitting there on a flat rock, waiting patiently in her armor with her golems.

    “Howdy, Blood,” Eloise greeted.

“Eloise, what are you doing here?”

“Oh just getting some fresh air, smelling the flowers… nice PJ’s by the way.”

Blood-Wraith looked down at his t-shirt and striped pajama pants. “Rats…” he said as the sound of a motorcycle approached.

“Blood, there you are!” Yoshihiro said as he got out of the side car. “You left before Tiberius could tell you the important part…”

“Eloise isn’t actually in Shadowland,” Serjiel continued as he hung his goggles on the bike’s handle. He then looked at her and put two and two together. “Oh, I see. You gave us that tip, didn’t you, Miss Ter Avest?”

She gave a cheeky smile. “Guilty as charged.” This caused Blood-Wraith, Aureolus, and Weaver to groan, albeit for various reasons.

“Jeez, that’s something Andelin would do,” Weaver remarked. “So, Eloise, are you actually heading to Shadowland?”

“Yup. Doing a little shopping for myself, Guinevere, and mom. Nothing too serious… at least, not in relation to our little shindig, you know what I mean?”

Aureolus shrugged. “Promise you’re not up to anything sneaky?”

“You have my word as a Ter Avest!”

“Alright then, I don’t see anything wrong with that…”

Weaver chuckled, then handed Eloise a business card. “Well if you ever need some smithing or repairs, swing by Craddock Smithing, 8 to 5 on weekdays and 10 to 4 on weekends. I’m one of the best in Shadowland and should be available, assuming I’m not busy dealing with your mother, haha.”

Eloise laughed as she tucked the card into her wallet. “Thank you, Weaver. I’ll keep that in mind.”

    “Weaver…” Blood-Wraith subtly scolded.

“Hey, business is business, Blood. I am not going to turn down a paying customer… of course recent developments have me questioning that mentality, but Eloise and the whole family are more than welcome in my shop.”

“To be fair, establishing friendly relations in this situation wouldn’t be a bad thing, Blood,” Serjiel reasoned. “Eloise, why else did you bring us out here?” he inquired with a subtle chuckle.

“I was a little bored and wanted to see Blood again.” She then hopped off the rock and dusted her pants off, causing the golems to organize themselves. “I was going to challenge him to a duel, but he looks a little tuckered out…”

“I don’t care what you got on me, I need a breather…” Blood-Wraith complained as he sat down on a rock on the other side of the road. “Being a giant wolf is exhausting…”

Yoshihiro laughed a little as he stepped over. It seemed like he was ready to go for something. “I could humor you, Eloise, if you don’t mind.”

She looked at his person, noting his loose fitting clothes. They were perfect for fighting and exercise, looking quite comfortable in the process. “...but you don’t have a blade?”

“Don’t need it,” he replied as a silvery energy danced around his right arm. “Blade or fist, I can deal.”

Weaver went to sit down next to Blood, followed by Aureolus. “Eloise, you and your mother have been studying us, so how about we study you for once?”

Eloise stumbled over her words for a second, then smiled. “Oh alright, fair enough,” she said as she drew her sword.

Serjiel took a seat on his bike as the golems walked over to stand by the four. He was curious to see how this impromptu duel would go. “Ready, Eloise? Yoshihiro is quite the martial artist, having multiple tournament wins from his homeland under his belt.”

She gave a nervous chuckle. “Hehe, no pressure…”

Yoshihiro looked as if he was meditating for a second as he closed his eyes and began saying something under his breath. Assuming a graceful stance, he opened his eyes and gestured for Eloise to come at him. She opened with an overhead slash, only for Yoshihiro to halt it with his aura, mere fractions of an inch away from his palm. Seeing him ready his counter, Eloise panicked and quickly backed away. From this point on the fight was mostly Eloise clumsily avoiding Yoshihiro’s moves. His focused, patient fighting style was unexpected and weirdly unpredictable, forcing Eloise to think outside the box contrary to her usual aggressive style. She would get the upper hand here and there, only for Yoshihiro’s creativity to shine through.

Blood-Wraith was amazed by the fight, itching to know more about Yoshihiro’s techniques. “So this is what aura magic can do? Impressive. What’s that silver spell?”

“Steel skin,” Sejiel answered. “It’s a combat-path technique that uses his aura to protect his body from any blade. As for those sweeps and strikes, that’s just some martial arts that were necessary for him to learn for his training.”

“You know, it reminds me of some of the martial arts videos Gabriella showed me from her universe,” Weaver put in. “Except I imagine Yoshihiro could actually break wood and concrete if he wanted to.”

Blood-Wraith nodded, recalling some similar videos he had seen. “Yeah, I think I know what you mean. Are any of those real?”

“Nada. It’s all special boards and bricks designed to break.”

“Well that’s no good,” Aureolus commented. “What good is training to fake it when you should be learning how to actually do it? Kind of reminds me of Milosh…”

Weaver quickly realized that he had made a slight gaffe. “To be fair, apparently some masters can actually break that stuff, with enough training and conditioning.”

Blood-Wraith nodded, albeit wincing a little. “Sounds like a hassle…”

“I think it still bears mentioning that humans are a strange lot,” Serjiel stated. “They convince themselves that they cannot do something and turn that into a self-fulfilling prophecy out of fear of failure. It’s quite sad really.”

Blood-Wraith thought about that quandary as he watched Yoshihiro avoid a barrage of swift sword slashes from Eloise. “Huh, maybe I should take it easy after all…”

Aureolus grinned and chuckled. “Told you so, Blood.”

Just as Eloise was planning her next attack, an alarm clock one of the golems was holding went off. “Aw shoot! I yield, Yoshihiro.”

This caught him off guard, messing up his rhythm. “What’s up? That was a lot of fun…”

“Sorry, but I was supposed to be back home by now,” she elaborated as she sheathed her blade and rounded up her golems.

Yoshihiro took a breath, calming himself down and dispersing the aura that had manifested around him. “Fair enough, I don't want to keep you all day. Let’s do this again sometime. I’ll even train you, if you want. You got potential, Eloise.”

“Thanks, Yoshihiro,” she replied as she prepared to head out. “I’ll keep that in mind too. Tata, everyone! And don’t worry, Blood, I’ll pick you up something while I’m out shopping,” Elosie called out as she left.

Blood-Wraith exhaled, a little flustered. “See you later, Eloise…”

Serjiel nodded in contemplation as he got his bike ready to go. “Aggressive and passionate, yet prone to tunnel vision. Interesting…”

“Alright, let’s head back,” Blood-Wraith said with a relieved sigh as he got up from his rock. “I’ve got an idea…”

“Blood, what are you planning?” Aureolus cautiously inquired. “I don’t like that look…”

Weaver gave a hearty, nostalgic laugh. “Jeez, now I know how Barna felt whenever I just barreled out there and challenged Dunja back in the day.”

“Come on, guys,” Blood-Wraith rebuked. “Cut me some slack.”

Serjiel started up his motorcycle, with the engine revving to life as Yoshihiro hurried into the side car. “What do you have in mind, Blood? If you’ll indulge my curiosity…”

“Oh, just calling a friend for advice,” he replied as he turned into Golden Dragon and let Aureolus and Weaver onto his back. “Val missed the inauguration, but I’m hoping she’s free now…”
