ULTRAMagic Alternate Lore 27 - Scotty Cottonwood
Cadwalader Winston Chadwick (Age 41), is a psychically sensitive individual who attended the academy to help get his powers under control. He is a caring and quirky man, with an interest in tabletop games and wargaming. His once long-standing friendship with Audoin ended as Audoin became more embittered and withdrawn. Given that Cadwalader is a necromancer, his partner devil is Terence Bohr, a chrono devil who helps keep Cadwalader’s psyche clear. Terence saw Audoin’s decline from the getgo, but could not do anything due to learning that Karnage was the one who corrupted Audoin. As for Terence himself, he is a wisecracker, but also a philosopher who contemplates the Outer Void and the nature of the existence of the Cosmos itself.
As for the mages that joined the fellowship:
Tasgall Angus Tracy (Age 30) was an alchemist focusing on metal and stone. He went to college to become an engineer, but had a talent for alchemy. An upbeat and clever individual, he initially looked up to Audoin for his accomplishments. This would slowly erode for Tasgall as he saw more of Audoin’s bad side, however. Notably Audoin was overly jealous of Tasgall and his skills, turning it into a one-sided grudge. Aside from alchemy and engineering, Tasgall enjoys sports. He does not consider himself an athlete, but he will happily play a game of basketball, soccer, football, or baseball.
Diederick “Derrick” Glenn Joyner (Age 24) is an elektromancer who joined the Azoth Mages wanting to help make the world a better place. While Derrick is normally optimistic and heroic, Audoin’s decline reigned in his starry-eyed nature a bit. Derrick considers Tasgall to be his rival due to admiring Tasgall’s engineering and alchemical expertise. Alchemy was never Derrick’s strong suit, but he has always wanted it to be. Tasgall is more than willing to teach him, but Derrick prefers to see what Tasgall does and to try to replicate that to varying results.
Euphemia Rosalin Pauwels (Age 23) is Derrick’s girlfriend and a skilled soul mage specializing in elemental magic. Euphemia is a clever and caring problem solver, who usually has the answers to Derrick’s questions. She also keeps Derrick grounded whenever he gets carried away with one of his plans, and stands up for him whenever Audoin tries to push Derrick around.
Madelyn April Rayne (Age 26) is another soul mage who specializes in storm magic. She is Derrick’s cousin and was brought in for her talent in soul magic. She is studious and tidy (despite her rather chaotic magic), with a knack for film and book analysis.
Audoin’s Expulsion
After many incidents involving Audoin making a fool himself and antagonizing his allies, Balthazar finally cast him out of The Azoth Mages. The straw that broke the camel’s back, despite everything else that had happened, was Audoin taking on Edwin “Distortion” Hermans as his apprentice. The issue was that Edwin was a follower of the hedonistic Crimson God, and this was considered a gross betrayal of the values of The Azoth Mages. Audoin would finally go off the rails and begin trying to take over the world, claiming he was the savior who would create a new world order where no one suffered.
Audoin caused great turmoil, but out of all of the incidents he caused, the most infamous at that point was the enthrallment of his old agitators to carry out his will. Known as The Audoan Knights, these corrupted individuals became reviled for their harassment of Audoin’s enemies. During this period of chaos, several new mages would join the Azoth mages:
Scott “Scotty” Rowan Cottonwood (Age 32) was a farmer with a talent for plantamancy and elektromancy who joined The Azoth Mages after an encounter with Audoin. A close friend of Scotty’s was nearly killed, forcing him to throw his cowboy hat into the conflict. Scotty is a persistent, hard worker who was more than willing to lend a hand to help stop Audoin.
Clyde Douglas Jansink (Age 27) is an aura master with great strength and unyielding fortitude. He joined following an incident where The Audoan Knights harassed his village. Clyde is a level-headed peace keeper with a heart of gold and a good sense of humor. He is also a body builder and wants everyone to be just as strong and fit as him. Clyde’s method of getting people into shape is based on his aura training, which has helped his friends and family a great deal.
Velda Elizabeth Anderson (Age 28) is a necromancer who specializes in angel magic. She joined The Azoth Mages after divining that Audoin was corrupted by Karnage (which this information greatly helped the mages). She is sassy and plucky, yet careful and patient. Velda is also good friends with Euphemia and is considered the team’s medic thanks to the healing properties of her angel magic.
Audoin’s degeneration became more clear when he beckoned Karnage for power and gained the ability to perceive higher dimensions, mutating into a magic anomaly. He then began performing dangerous rituals to alter the timeline and the fabric of reality. These machinations became so out of hand that even The Madman of Old took notice. He had to act fast as Audoin was starting to destabilize his entire region of Multiverse-23, and Universe-231218 would be cast into the Universe Graveyard.
Seeing an opportunity to help The Azoth Mages, The Madman of Old would go to Edwin to bring him to his senses. He would tell him to leave Audoin and spill the beans of what he knew to The Azoth Mages. Edwin was a bit apprehensive given his clashes with the mages before, so The Madman of Old introduced him to The Psyco God. The Psyco God was an obscure god of black hole stars who was considering joining Lord Anti and The Tyrant God in the war against The Sepulcher God and The Eternal Order. Also interested in reforming Edwin, The Psyco God granted him a magical electric guitar that could cast the wildest magic imaginable. With some encouragement from The Madman of Old and The Psyco God, Edwin would finally turn his back on Audoin.
The Cataclysm
The Great Cataclysm occurred as a result of Universe-231218 being cast into the Universe Graveyard in which the residents of Earth-231218 noticed the light of God become distant. Balthazar needed answers, as even The Night God was confused. Edwin approached The Azoth Mages with what he had been told and they were rightfully skeptical at first. Velda was sympathetic, but the others were unconvinced. Fortunately Edwin knew of a sneak attack Audoin was planning and successfully led The Azoth Mages in a counterattack against The Audoan Knights. This actually set Audoin back a great deal and allowed Edwin to steadily gain the trust of The Azoth Mages. Furthermore, Lord Anti took interest in The Night God and welcomed him into his alliance, bolstering their might and setting plans into motion that would stop Audoin once and for all.
The last two members to join The Azoth Mages were:
Edwin “Distortion” Marion Herman (Age 25) originally was a normal man fresh out of college that was indoctrinated into the cults of pleasure and glory that were worshiping The Crimson God. He even became a void caller for The Crimson God, but those void spells remain unclear. Originally rude and haughty under Audoin, betraying The Audoan Knights allowed his good side to return. He is actually quite the charmer and witty, also being a talented musician. Things between him and Derrick were rough at first, leading to rivalry between the two. And despite his redemption, Edwin still maintains influences of The Crimson God, best seen in his glam metal, polymateria bodysuit. His void spells under The Psyco God are:

Introduction
Scotty Cottonwood is a specialist mage from the tragic and war-torn Earth-231218. Having left his home for the time being, Scotty is a member of The Dark Divers Guild and is one of their most hardworking members. Despite being a farmer who came from a simple family, his history is of utmost importance to the ongoing war between Lord Anti and The Eternal Order. To talk about Mr. Cottonwood himself, a recounting of the events of Universe-231218 is necessary to establish how he ended up in the Dark Void in the first place.
Universe-231218 is considered a decayed universe from Multiverse-23 that has been a battleground against Karnage Dethgrave and his extreme interpretations of The Sepulcher God’s desires and vision for the Cosmos. Having once been a normal, stable universe, Universe-231218 has been irreparably damaged due to the actions of the corrupt and immoral mage, Audoin Dethbrand. Currently Earth-231218 lies in the Dark Void as a means of keeping Audoin at bay, thanks to the combined efforts of The Dark Divers Guild and The Azoth Mages. Earth-231218 is of grave importance to The Dark Divers Guild and The ULTRAMagic Guild as failure to hold back Audoin could spell disaster for the Cosmos as a whole.
Decayed Universes
What is a decayed universe and what denotes them? While this classification is eclectic and varied, in this case a decayed universe is any universe that has been deemed a threat to its nearby universes with no easy solution to its problems. If the issue is beyond the scope of what the Reality Walkers and Multiverse Patrol (the MVP) can handle, The Madman of Old will cast the universe in question into the Universe Graveyard. The graveyard acts as a place of quarantine for any universe deemed too unstable or dangerous for the Cosmos as a whole to handle. These universes can still pose a threat, however, as escaping them is not impossible, and even the greatest of entities cannot constantly watch over them. The Graveyard Division of the MVP do their best to patrol the Universe Graveyard, but they can only do so much.
The Rise of The Azoth Mages
Audoin Dethbrand was originally an upstanding and loved mage attending The Gold Medallion Academy of Magic. Despite being invited to the academy on special terms and being given assistance to pass his classes, Audoin’s unparalleled creativity was cause for praise and admiration. One of Audoin’s first actions upon graduation was to form a fellowship (that would hopefully turn into a guild at some point in the future) of mages called “The Azoth Mages.” This group would work to protect the world from magical threats and anomalies, with a focus on helping up-and-coming mages develop their magic capabilities. Things were off to a great start, with Audoin recruiting his best friend, Cadwalader Chadwick, and their old professor, Balthazar Abrams.
Trouble was brewing behind the scenes as Audoin was not handling his fame well. Earth-231218 was a version of Earth that had a society built on technology and magic, but magic was always seen as niche and strange. Audoin had a degree of eccentricity to him and beliefs even his Earth’s society found odd. This led to the non-magically inclined to make fun of him, with Balthazar telling Audoin countless times to stay off of things like the internet (Balthazar having notable disdain for computers and computer-based technology).
Audoin ignored his old professor and seemed to take the antagonization in stride at first, but in reality it was taking a serious toll on his pride and self-esteem. After a series of embarrassing incidents where Audoin made a public fool of himself, Balthazar would assume full control of the fellowship. This would lead to Audoin secretly forming a one-sided grudge against Balthazar. Truthfully Balthazar felt bad for Audoin, but he had to do something or The Azoth Mages would not have a snowball’s chance in Inferno of succeeding if Audoin was left in charge and free to do whatever he wanted. The boy had creativity and vision, but evidently his discipline and leadership skills were still lacking.
Over time the agitators would begin to truly get to Audoin, slowly driving him to irrationality. Eventually this would lead to Audoin meeting a mysterious stranger (later found out to be Karnage Dethgrave) who would begin speaking with him in secret. This individual would fill Audoin’s head with delusions of grandeur, convincing him he was being held back by Balthazar. The solution he was presented with was to join The Eternal Order (with Karnage obviously hiding certain details). The man would promise Audoin that he would truly achieve fame, fortune, and greatness. Audoin was hooked, but would not leave The Azoth Mages overnight.
All of this was a slow process and was not obvious from the outset. Both Balthazar and Cadwalader slowly began to notice the mental decline of Audoin, but could not do anything about it. Audoin’s blunders were taking a toll on the reputation of The Azoth Mages and announcing that Audoin had lost his mind would have been the final nail in the coffin. Despite the chaos The Azoth Mages had to deal with, they were able to recruit mages into the fellowship.
Starting with the first two founding members:
Balthazar Amadeus Reginald Abrams (Age 67) was a well renowned professor of the academy, notable for being a void caller working with The Night God. Balthazar knew Audoin would have trouble with his fellowship and that he had to join no matter what. In truth Balzathar eventually wanted to become the leader of the fellowship so he could make it the best it could be, and reign Audoin in by a great deal. Balthazar is also a professional maestro, heavily favoring classical music over other genres of music. As for his favorite composers, he prefers the works of Rossini, Holst, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Wagner, but has written multiple compositions of his own. In regards to Balthazar’s void spells under The Night God, they are as a follows:

Audoin’s Expulsion

The Audoan Empire
Sensing the cosmic upheaval, Audoin began formulating a new plan. He would use the sun as a catalyst for a spell that would merge Universe-231218 with Universe-23 at Karnage’s behest. And then Karnage was defeated elsewhere, sending Audoin’s forces into a frenzy when he was bequeathed a part of Karnage’s power. Now 7D, Audoin could set his plan into motion. First he needed an empire, The Audoan Empire. The authoritarian conqueror, Rambert Sjaak Meine Roijakkers, stepped up and started a takeover of Europe. It started in England, where Prime Minister Bradford Auteberry (a loved and well-respected leader) was ousted by Kenneth Stainthorpe, a puppet of Rambert’s. The two tyrants convinced many European countries to join them, promising salvation and a better life.
To bolster the growing might of the empire, Mephistopheles of Earth-23 brought in Anne Vozenilek and Sebastian Rainer Friedrich III to create a mighty army of malevolent demons, nephilim, and juggernaut-class shadow constructs. This was one aspect of Karnage’s many contingency plans, and it caught the immediate attention of The Madman of Old. The Madman and The Automaton of Old scrambled to formulate a plan with The Azoth Mages to halt Audoin’s plans, stop the Audoan Empire, and begin sowing the seeds of Audoin’s undoing. Notably this incident clued in Lord Anti and his allies into the fact that Karnage’s Tower, the base of operations of The Eternal Order, may be in the Universe Graveyard.
The Audoan Wars
Earth-231218 was not ready for The Audoan Wars. North America saw the brunt of it and was initially taken off guard when Audoin’s forces crossed the Atlantic Ocean to launch a blitzkrieg on the eastern seaboard, despite being at a massive disadvantage by doing so. Russia and China were promised to be inducted as members of The Audoan Empire, only to be stabbed in the back by devastating surprise attacks when they let their guards down. Rambert and Kenneth made it abundantly clear they only wanted their resources and manpower, not their loyalty. India, what remained of Russia, and multiple Middle Eastern countries tried to launch nuclear strikes against The Audoan Empire as a last resort, only for Audoin to transmute the nuclear weapons into an army to invade those countries and take them over.
Sebastian had convinced Audoin to claim the world for himself and to eliminate any competition with utmost brutality. What made Audoin so dangerous and threatening was that he did not care about the ramifications of his actions. His global conquest was impossible, but he just did not care and did it anyway. And no matter how hard his “subjects” rejected him, Audoin and Rambert forced their will onto them. It even went so far as Audoin using his magic to overwrite the wills of his people to force them to do his bidding. This no doubt stemmed from Karnage’s powers and mentality, given that he was more than happy to subjugate and-or eliminate anyone who opposed him.
The Onyx Maiden Turns the Tide of Battle
The Azoth Mages were blindsided in trying to tackle Audoin’s newfound might, struggling to hold their ground as America, Canada, and Mexico were hammered from both hemispheres by Audoin’s unrelenting assaults. In an unexpected turn of events, The Onyx Maiden, Antonius Van Agteren, and Lady Mildburg of the High Wall from Earth-XT49 had showed up with an army made of contributions from The End of the World Combat Brigade (ENCOM), The Inquisition, and The Deep Undead Tribes to fight back against The Audoan Empire. All of this was thanks to intel from Anton Bloodthresher and Mads Sagan, of which the former gave what was left of his armies to The Onyx Maiden to help keep The Requiem Cosmos safe.
To the chagrin of Lord Anti and Anton, The Onyx Maiden had to unleash The Undead Plague on Earth-231218. Audoin was really beginning to unleash his full power on The Azoth Mages, and The Reverse Serpent’s power was the only effective way to combat it. This conflict also saw the return of the Death Wraith Undead, albeit as proper undead dinosaurs and not the abominations they were under Anton’s command. As for why The Onyx Maiden was going all out? Following the events depicted in Grave Requiem Overkill and Grave Requiem Overkill: Lost Galaxy, ENCOM began reaching out to other universes to look for Ultinn-Lacksus and provide any assistance they could against The Eternal Order. Ultinn-Lacksus was thought to be smited by Reynard Woodall (as The Sulfur of Old), but evidently Ultinn had found a way to survive. Anton suspected it was because Ultinn was an aspect of Karnage, and that he was what The Requiem Series was truly trying to imprison.
With powerful allies on their side, The Azoth Mages were able to gain the upperhand against Audoin. There were many clashes all over the world, with several notable ones being:
One of the penultimate battles with Audoin saw The Azoth Mages taking on Rambert and Kenneth to free England and get Bradford back into power. Rambert had been considerably powered up by Audoin, but Velda pulled off a miracle with her magic. Audoin managed to separate the mages and ENCOM, but Velda had summoned the 7D dark angel, Schwarzes Biest, who was accompanied by the black flame demon, Heinrik Rofocale, to fight Rambert. Schwarzes at the time was a six winged, lion-headed angel with vast amounts of untamed power, who had also recently escaped Universe-X090X and had sensed Karnage’s scheming. It should be noted that Karnage is widely believed to have been the corrupting force behind The ACF of Universe-X090X.
While Schwarzes ripped Rambert to shreds up and down The Audoan Tower of Heaven, destroying it in the process, Heinrik went after Kenneth. Kenneth was a crafty one, however. He was able to escape Heinrik, but not without losing a great deal of the power Audoin had granted him in the process. Kenneth would escape to Earth-23 where he would attempt to continue Audoin’s plans. Getting into contact with Hector Fang and Monty Black, they would pair him up with Laurence Duckenfield, who got him into power as the Prime Minister of England in an attempt to jumpstart Sebastian’s World War III. These plans went belly up when General Lundberg performed a brutal ousting of Hector that led to Hector’s death and Monty Black’s escape.
The Final Battle?
In the final battle of The Audoan Wars, Audoin would go to the sun and shrink it the size of Earth and prepare his spell to merge universes. Thankfully Balthazar and The Night God were able to cast a spell that sent the entire solar system elsewhere while the mages dealt with Audoin. This enraged Audoin as he needed Earth so he could merge it with Earth-23 to kill all that he viewed as wronging him. This unbridled rage resulted in him unlocking more of Karnage’s power, causing him to become 9D. The stakes had been the highest they had ever been and the mages could not take him down, with Audoin even on the cusp of becoming 10D. The Night God and Pysco God, in a massive gamble, devised a plan to seal Audoin away in a crystal prison that would allow them time to think of a new plan. Once Audoin was successfully sealed away, Balthazar took everyone else to the new location of their Earth.
Earth-231218 and its solar system had ended up in the Dark Void with a new star, but the fight was far from over as now the Azoth Mages needed to make sure the seal held. There was also the fact that Earth-231218 was in shambles and society needed to be healed and rebuilt. Someone needed to go get help and Scotty volunteered, despite having some reservations about leaving his home like that. With his fellow mages wishing him the best of luck, The Onyx Maiden guided him to the Dark Void Expanse and pointed him in the direction of The Dark Divers Guild before returning to Earth-XT49.
Scotty Joins the Dark Divers
Scotty would be found by Vapor 6 and brought to The Dark Divers guild. Explaining what had happened since The Automaton had left, The Automaton naturally panicked, but dutifully had someone lined up to handle the case. Erikson the Forlorn Dragon was originally a wicked dragon god who had fled a battle lost to time in the deepest, unknown regions of the Cosmos. He had ended up in the Epoch of the Cosmos to recover, but abandoned his wicked ways when he met and became friends and rivals with Leif, The Dragon of Old. Sensing Audoin’s alliance with Karnage, he was insistent on handling the case. Scotty was a little nervous, but The Automaton assured him everything would be okay. Of note was that Tiberius Skull (formerly The Scholar of Old) was a member of the Dark Divers Guild at the time before joining the modern ULTRAMagic Guild, and would bring knowledge of the Audoin incident to them when he joined them.
After getting settled into the guild, Scotty would be partnered up with Zara Teagann for protection. Zara was a reincarnated primordial, even though she does not seem like one at first glance. What a primordial becomes upon reincarnation is unpredictable. Some remain the same while others take on an entirely new life. And some reincarnate only to find themselves radically different, yet similar to their old life. The Executioner of Old, known for his ruthlessness and overwhelming presence, had found himself reborn as a daughter to a family of farmers and blacksmiths in the late Unlight kingdom of Feuerland. When Zara regained memories of her old life, she nearly lost her mind, as The Executioner of Old was a very proud man.
Zara deviated from her family’s traditions to become a sellsword. She wanted to become an executioner again, but her parents openly refused. To be fair, Feuerland was in its death throes and she realized taking up the ax again would have been in poor taste (she still adopted the title of “Zara the Executioner” though). Through wandering and taking jobs here and there, Zara eventually found her way into the Dark Void where she would join The Dark Divers Guild. At the time Zara was aimless and lonely, needing a new family. The Dark Divers were there at the right time and place for her.
Despite Zara’s nature of being brash, lewd at times, and confrontational, she proved to be a stellar protector for Scotty. Her focused, clever, and no-nonsense side impressed Scotty to no end. And he also found himself infatuated with her after finding out she used to be a farmhand. Zara would be lying if she said she also did not find herself drawn to Scotty, given his charming, stoic, and rugged farmboy nature. The two made a formidable team, especially given Zara’s twin-sword gunnrmancy. Her skills in battle and “business” have been invaluable in keeping Scotty and The Azoth Mages safe from The Eternal Order and any remaining agents of Audoin Dethbrand.
On an ending note, Schwarzes would end up in the Dark Void going after what he thought was Rambert, but turned out to be one of his lackeys. Scotty was happy to see him again, even though Schwarzes was still a bit chaotic and untamed. Schwarzes would be taken to the guild where Erikson would help him hone his power and get it under control. With his head clear and mind thinking straight, Erikson pointed Schwarzes in the direction of The Unlight. Deimos (The Mage of Old) was forming a new guild for ULTRAMagic mages and Schwarzes was just the man for them. The dark angel would head there and would eventually wait in The Magician’s Labyrinth where he would meet a very special ar’ton boy…
In Regards to Scotty Cottonwood
As for who Scotty is, he is a simple farmer who was unfortunately thrust into the conflict between Balthazar and Audoin. Scotty is a hard worker and willing to do things himself, but the Audoan Wars tested his resolve. Having the fate of the Earth and the Cosmos weighing on his shoulders was driving him mad, as he really wants to go back to being a farmer. Notably his parents argued a lot when he was a kid, which led to him feeling like he had to take charge and develop his self-sufficient work ethic. Regardless of his current circumstances and outlook on life, he is a good man one can count on and a resourceful DIY master. Scotty also reveres tradition, loves folk music, and has a thing for cooking. And in regards to The Dark Divers Guild, they are great people if a little strange at times.
Scotty’s magic is interesting as he is incredibly proficient in both plantamancy and elektromancy. It is unclear which one is his aptitude and which one is his specialty. His elektromancy can be best described by comparing it to others. The mage Barry Esko Boyle uses physics-style with dashes of cyber-style. Vapor 6 uses purely cyber-style. Scotty uses storm-style, which is a simple form of elektromancy focused on manipulating electricity. It is very handy for his work and farming. As an aside, Derrick uses a mix of cyber and storm-style.
Plantamancy is divination through plants, allowing Scotty to conjure them up to suit his needs. He can do things such as fertilize soil with his magic, summon colossal trees, or have his plants help him with his day to day tasks. This magic also allows him to be in tune with nature, further allowing to sense the weather or talk to the flora itself to find out what is going on around him. When asked about which magic came first, Scotty states he has always felt at peace outside and in the woods. He described himself as a child of the earth that will always be there to help it grow and prosper.

- Balthazar wiping out an entire army of shadow constructs with a single void spell that summoned a cavalry force while he conducted a spectral orchestra in a performance of the William Tell Overture.
- Scotty would get into a battle with Sebastian where he would create a fully grown oak tree with his Plantamancy and use it to ram Sebastian off of a cliff, pummeling him with the tree all the way down.
- The Onyx Maiden made use of her newly-developed Void Howitzers to destroy a colossal, Audoan rampart fortress in Finland, all while another invading force attempted to stop her. The six, floating, obsidian and onyx cannons were based on Brigadier General Dryden’s God Cannons technique.
- Edwin would destroy an entire group of Audoan Knights with his void magic by playing a song of destruction on his guitar.
- The Onyx Maiden, Antonius, and Lady Mildburg were able to chase off Mephistopheles. It was revealed that he was in communication with Ultinn, who planned to merge with Audoin to fully regain his old powers as Karnage.
