“Blood-Wraith?” A woman’s voice called out, accompanied by knocks on the bedroom door.
“Huh, what?” the boy wondered as he shifted under his large, fluffy blankets.
“Blood-Wraith Raynot, get up! You’re running late as is!”
He sighed, not wanting to get out of bed as he was very comfy. “Coming, mom…”
It was a bright, sunny morning in the Iron City, home of the mighty Descendants. Looking out the window and seeing the many gothic spires across the land, Blood-Wraith groaned a little as he made his bed. His three month semester at school was over and it was time to return to the ULTRAMagic Guild. One would think a vacation from defeating The Lich of Old, saving Queen Dunja, and having some of his closest friends get rid of the vile Milosh Proch would put him in a good mood, but no. Not only did night and day return to the city upon his victories, but so did the seasons. A particularly obnoxious blizzard left an ice dam on his bedroom roof. Stopping the leaks was no problem given his magic, but the awkward tension of trying to figure out what an ice dam was left Blood-Wraith in a sour mood.
Still, he felt obligated to wear a smile as he put on his magical armor and got into his knight uniform. It was inauguration day for the ULTRAMagic Guild, a collection of powerful mages and warriors dedicated to protecting the Cosmos. The project was the brainchild of an angel called Ultimatum and an entity known as The ULTRAMagic Entity. To put it simply, the idea was to collect those who had the trait, which allowed the possessor to learn any type of magic. While a herculean task, the guild already had multiple wise and strong members that gave them a running start.
After tidying up his messy room of the toys and games that cluttered it, Blood-Wraith headed downstairs and to the dining room. “Good morning, dad,” he said as he sat down at the table.
“You’re late, Blood,” Radovan pointed out as he looked up from his newspaper. “It’s 10 o’clock and you said you’d be there at 8.” In addition to being Blood-Wraith’s adoptive father, Radovan was the duke of the Iron City. He was a tall, strong man with combed back hair and square jawline.
“Very unbecoming of a knight, Blood,” Rose chided as she handed him a plate of eggs, bacon, and toast. Rose was Radovan’s wife, making her the duchess. She was a stunningly beautiful swordsman with long, scarlet hair and heterochromatic eyes. Notably Blood-Wraith had previously gone on a quest to find her, after defeating The Lich of Old.
Blood-Wraith chuckled. “Better late than never.”
“True, but you did give your word,” Radovan replied.
“Thanks, dad…”
Rose took a seat across from him. “I suppose you are not entirely at fault given that you’re still a child.”
“Actually the lad has grown,” Radovan pointed out. “He’s gone through a growth spurt since we met him half a year ago.”
Rose studied Blood-Wraith for a moment and nodded. “Goodness, I hope he doesn’t grow up too fast…”
After finishing his orange juice and wiping his face, Blood-Wraith stood up and neatly pushed in his chair. “Mom, dad? It’s going to be a new era for the Cosmos, one without strife as the ULTRAMagic guild is here!”
Radovan laughed, knowing his son meant well. “Blood, there’s always going to be strife in the Cosmos…”
Blood-Wraith sighed as he smoothed out his brown hair and put on his beret. “Okay, reduced strife then.”
“There you go,” Radovan said as he got up and patted him on the back. “Shall I drive you to the guild?”
“Sure, thank you, dad.”
“I’ll cover for you until you get back, honey,” Rose said to Radovan as she picked up the dishes and kissed him. “Have fun, you two!”
As they left Blood-Wraith’s modest, three-story house, Radovan finally noticed something different about him. “Blood, what happened to your six eyes? I only see two now…”
“Oh, that,” Blood-Wraith remarked as they got into Radovan’s car, a 60’s hornet. “I guess they merged into two. I noticed they even change color with my emotions. Even red appears now.”
“Haha, you just continue to be full of surprises,” Radovan complimented as he started the car, whirring and rumbling to life.
Leaving the gates of the Iron City, things had changed greatly since Blood-Wraith was discovered by his sister, Dragoslava Raynot. What was once a barren, desolate wasteland of dust was now grassy and darted with forests. An entity Blood-Wraith had discovered in his quest to defeat The Lich, The Unending Forest, had finally settled down next to The Iron City in the wake of that bout. It had been growing in size since then, even reaching the eastern kingdom of Shadowland. Everyone in the Central Unlight welcomed the change as everything felt alive again. Although there was slight concern that the forest would swallow up the entire region up and begin moving around again. To be fair, that was not the worst fate ever.
Pulling up to the ULTRAMagic Guild, it was a grand structure consisting of a central keep surrounded by multiple, romanesque buildings, and a grand archive off to the side. Tiberius Skull, one of the three great mages of the Epoch, was tasked with building the hall. He did an amazing job on account of Blood-Wraith giving him three months to work while he attended Iron City Academy. The odds of anyone conquering the guild were slim to none. Upon seeing it, Blood-Wraith got excited and was eager to head inside.
Upon the car stopping at the main gate and Blood-Wraith getting out, he turned to face his father. “You’re not coming with me?”
“I’d love to, son, but there’s work at the tower. You-know-who has been sighted again…”
“Let me guess: Valerie?” His father nodded, causing Blood-Wraith to sigh. “Don’t worry, dad. Tiberius said the whole thing will be televised.”
“I’ll pause what I’m doing the minute it comes on.”
“Awesome. See you later, dad…”
“Blood?” Radovan interjected before the door was shut. “I’m proud of you, son.”
“Thanks, dad,” Blood-Wraith replied as he shut the door.
Normally a password would be required to be spoken to the giant, ornate gates, but they opened themselves for Blood-Wraith. With a spring in his step, he hurried down the cobblestone path to the main entrance. Three people were standing around, all very familiar to the young mage. The first was Dragoslava, a muscular, pretty, dark haired woman in a trench coat. She had natural ULTRAMagic and the ability to completely metalize her body. The latter ability was gained at the Metal Oasis after a particularly dreadful encounter with The Lich of Old.
Standing next to Dragoslava was Desislav Robles, a tall and strong man with a gentle disposition. He was Dragoslava’s betrothed and helped her and Blood-Wraith through thick and thin. Interestingly he had his brown hair cut in recent times in order to resemble a past life of his. Given that he was once a satyr who had turned into a human after absorbing special magic from their battles with The Lich, it made sense. Lastly was Tusk Willfort, a Tree Person from The Unending Forest. He was essentially a humanoid tree with dark bark for skin, brown hair, and glowing yellow eyes. He had been through a lot in recent years and had Blood-Wraith to thank for getting him out of an unbearable slump. Tusk even went on to help defeat The Lich of Old, albeit at the cost of an arm (that he replaced, thankfully).
“Hey guys, sorry I’m late!” Blood-Wraith called out to the trio, happy to see them.
“There you are, you little stinker” Dragoslava exclaimed as she picked him up and hugged him. “Any later and we would have had to come all the way to get you.”
“Did you have a rough night again?” Desislav asked with a smile. “Or were you being lazy?”
Blood-Wraith chuckled. “I didn’t feel like getting out of bed, ha. Oh, I tried that cookie recipe your mom gave me. They turned out fantastic.”
“Nice, you’ll have to make me some when you get the chance.”
“Hey, Blood,” Tusk said with his own hug. “Good to see you again.”
“Glad you could make it, Tusk. I hope I’m not interrupting your schedule…”
“Don’t worry, Blood, I can make time. The guild’s worth it. As a heads up, I’ll keep sending any potential recruits your way.”
“Fine with me, tusk,” Blood-Wraith replied with a thumbs up.
Tusk then glanced around, looking for someone. “Hey, where’s Auda? I figured she would have been here…”
“She wanted to, but she had school today.”
Tusk paused and nodded. “Never thought my niece would commit to the school thing, given that she refuses to sit down and learn…”
“It’s probably because of the academy,” Desislav reasoned. “Everybody is fascinated with her and there’s all sorts of cool stuff to learn.
“Mm-hm, can attest to that,” Blood-Wraith added.
“I’m so glad she chose school life instead of becoming an explorer,” Tusk remarked. “Err, no offense, Drago.”
“None taken,” she replied with a smile. “Exploring is dangerous. I mean jeez, you got to investigate an anomaly, find a baby brother, nearly die gaining metal skin, come face to face with a bloodthirsty lich at the edge of the Cosmos-NEED I SAY MORE!?” That cathartic outburst made them all laugh.
“And it all culminated in this!” Blood-Wraith pointed out, indicating the guild. “We’re going to do great good for the Cosmos, I can feel it.”
“Now that’s the enthusiasm we like to see,” Desislav complimented, resisting the urge to ruffle Blood-Wraith’s hair. “Any evildoer comes our way and we’ll show’em what-for!”
Tusk chuckled, then looked up at the sky and sighed. “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I wish Leif was here…” They all went silent for a moment in memory of their good friend.
“Kind of surreal for a dragon such as himself to just leave like that…” Dragoslava commented.
“I’ve been talking to him in my dreams as of late,” Blood-Wraith said calmly.
“You have?” Dragoslava was surprised, as were the others.
Blood-Wraith nodded. “Kind of. He sort of just shows up and we have fun together. I never get to ask him anything as I never have full control over my dreams. It’s a ‘I can do whatever I want, but I have to play along with the story’ kind of deal. He’s coming back no matter what though, mark my words.”
Desislav shook his head with a smile and patted Blood-Wraith on the shoulder. “Well no matter what life he takes, I can’t wait to see him again.”
Dragoslava then went to the wooden, double doors and opened them. “Alright, enough chit chat. Let’s head in!” The sound of people chatting could be heard in the distance as they walked through the halls with walls adorned with gorgeous cuts of wood.
Blood-Wraith was jittery with anticipation. “I heard some new members popped up recently…”
“Yes indeed,” Tusk replied. “I think you’ll like Jonathan as he brought along his wind devil.”
“Oh cool, a necromancer! That’s right up your alley, sister.”
“Well we’ll have to hurry our pace and go meet him, see what he can do!”
“Ooh, I can’t wait! Let’s go!” Blood-Wraith said as he darted forward.
