Johnathan was keeping his eyes and ears open the next day when an alert had come in that ice cream golems were spotted at Red Stone Mine. Unlike Challenger’s Mine, this one was more active, albeit in a reduced capacity. Valerie was most likely interested in the chronorubies deep within, so Blood-Wraith took Aureolus, Brenna, and Barry to deal with the issue. Jonathan and Brandr waited patiently for the four to return, with the outcome determining their next move. Truthfully Johnathan was hoping his hunch was not true

Blood-Wraith’s team eventually returned as Johnathan sat at a table in the main hall with Brandr, calmly drinking some ale. It sounded like things had gone well from what the group happily described, with even one of the miners giving Blood-Wraith a chronoruby to give to Tiberius for his experiments. Johnathan’s sharp ears perked right up when he heard Barry say there were roughly 20 golems present, just like before. The group and Tiberius were a little surprised when Johnathan said he would accompany the next squad, confused by his certainty. Jonathan reassured them that it was just a hunch he wanted to address.

And like clockwork, Downstream Mine was receiving a visit from ice cream golems the next day. Jonathan and Brandr were ready to go as soon as the alert came in, heading out with Blood-Wraith, Mizuki, and Aureolus. In regards to Downstream Mine, it was an active Iron City mine that was notable for its underground streams that made mining and moving around easy. It was full of valuable gemstones and minerals of interest to Valerie, but she knew all too well that The Iron City was not going to relinquish it. Jonathan and Brandr figured this was a provocation of some kind, with Mizuki and Aureolus sharing the sentiment.

Just like before there were 21 golems that looked way too familiar to be a coincidence. While the others went to go talk to the miners after the battle, Jonathan went to inspect one of the golems. “Butterscotch…” he groaned after a taste.

Brandr saw a look of frustration in Johnathan’s eyes that he knew from past troubles that they had dealt with, especially on the high seas. “Oh boy, here we go. Don’t get too angry, John…”

    “DAMN IT, BLOOD.”

Blood-Wraith was taken off guard as he walked over to the two with Aureolus and Mizuki. “Whoa, John, what’s the matter?”

Jonathan gave a light growl as he exhaled. “Blood, these are the same golems from the other day…”

He looked at the inactive golem, then gave an incredulous look. “Just because there’s 21 doesn’t mean they’re the same ones from before…”

    “They taste like butterscotch.”

    “You’ve been tasting them? Why?”

“OH FOR THE LOVE OF THE CROWN!” Jonathan exclaimed. “Blood, Valerie’s playing you like a damn fiddle!”

Blood-Wraith knew he was in trouble, confirmed by the looks he was getting from Mizuki and Aureolus, both agreeing with Johnathan. “Well, fine then! Those are the same golems. Valerie is more than welcome to reuse them. We’re not barbarians after all…”

“Um, Blood?” Aureolus cut in. “I mean, we’re in the middle of a contest with her. We should probably destroy them…”

“We’re not cavemen, Aureolus,” Blood-Wraith snapped back.

“I agree with Aureolus, Blood-Wraith,” Mizuki interjected. “Letting the enemy recoup and recover is poor form and shows a distinct lack of combat discipline. My master once taught me…”

“Your master once offended the sun so bad that it refused to come up,” he rebuked.

That offended Mizuki, with it plain as day on her face. “YOU DARE!? You’d besmirch Master Susanoo?!”

Blood-Wraith groaned and went over to the miners. “Can you guys help me round up these golem parts?”

Jonathan frowned as Blood-Wraith and the miners put the parts into an old shipping container. “What in the Sam Hill are you doing?”

“Getting to the bottom of this…”

    “What?”

“You heard me!” Blood-Wraith shot back as he assumed the form of Golden Dragon.

“Um, Blood?” Brandr put in, hoping to talk him down.

“I’m taking these back to Valerie and you can’t stop me!” he replied before grabbing on to the container and flapping upwards.

“BOY, you are two steps away from being a turncoat!” Jonathan shouted, only for Blood-Wraith to breathe a fiery cloud of smoke that flipped him the bird. “YOU’D WALK THE PLANK FOR THAT!!” Things were silent for a second as the dragon flew off, then everyone else started laughing (even Mizuki). “What’s so funny?”

“John, I think you need an ale,” Brandr insisted through subsiding laughter. “Honestly I hope Valerie joins the guild when all of this is said and done.”

“I hate seeing Blood that upset, but that middle finger was pretty hilarious,” Aureolus admitted.

A burly, bearded miner then walked up and handed Johnathan some dried meat. “Here, Mr. Hawkins, have some jerky. My boys back home give me the same trouble. Bless their rambunctious souls.”

“Much obliged, matey…” Jonathan said with a sigh. The salty, smoked taste hit his tongue, allowing him to relax a little. He mulled over what had just happened, wondering what his father thought when he acted up as a child. “Lad’s trying to save the day when he doesn’t even have his sea legs yet…”

Mizuki also sighed. “I’ll have to apologize to Blood as there is merit to his critique of Master Susanoo…”

“Don’t worry about it too much, Mizuki,” Brandr assured her. “Blood was just frustrated and all first timers go through this. You should’ve seen some of the first time crews John and I had to sail with back home.”

“Don’t remind me, Brandr…” Jonathan groaned. “Thank God you were there.”

“Well no use dwelling on all of this,” Aureolus figured. “Let’s head back and inform everyone about the good news.”

“Ideally before Blood gets back, I’d imagine,” Brandr noted as he readied Johnathan’s wind ball.

Aureolus chuckled. “Here’s hoping he doesn’t get into trouble with Valerie. An impromptu rescue mission is the last thing we need right now,” he remarked as he used a hex to become a slightly smaller Golden Dragon.

Upon returning to the guild, Mizuki went to go see Razor while Aureolus and Johnathan called a quick meeting in conference room 1A with Tiberius, Alexia, Deimos, Vexation, Cronus, and Barry. Once everyone was present and seated, Jonathan gave a rundown of what had happened. Tiberius went from pleased to alarmed to flabbergasted all within the span of a couple of minutes. To say he was beside himself with frustration was actually a fairly apt assessment.

“That… BOY!” Tiberius complained. “Just who does he think he is!?” I’m trying to run a guild here and he’s treating it like some big game!”

Alexia put her hand on his shoulder to calm him. “Easy, dear. Blood is a child after all.”

“True, true… Source, I hope our future children aren’t like this.”

Deimos was lightly drumming his fingers on the table, looking like he was contemplating something. “It’s kind of odd he’s behaving like this, truth be told.”

“I don’t know, Eustorgio,” Vexation put in as he took some candy from the bowl in the center of the table. “His friends from school, Steven, Andy, and Claire, all had their own ideas on peace and conflict. Their hearts were in the right place, but it’s not what Blood needed to hear. And given his loss to Dunja a while ago on top of his responsibilities as a knight, is it really a surprise?”

“Good point, Ermenrich. And not having proper parents present wouldn’t help in the slightest… Blasted Lich… blasted me…”

“Don’t beat yourself up, Deimos,” said Cronus. “You’re doing way better than me, all things considered…”

The conversation was interrupted by Blood-Wraith entering the room with a small hand basket full of candy, munching on a chocolate bar filled with rice puffs. “Hey everyone, I’m back…” He then noticed some of the looks he was getting. “What?”

“Done aiding the enemy I see,” Tiberius scolded. “Enjoying your candy?”

Blood-Wraith scowled and groaned. “Valerie was very grateful, said she wouldn’t go after the mines anymore, and gave me this as a token of her appreciation.”

“For the love of the Source…” Tiberius complained with a face palm.

“Blood, sweetie?” Alexia cut in. “That was very chivalrous of you, but, um…”

“A token of her appreciation, Brandr,” Jonathan subtly mocked as he tapped him on the arm.

Brandr leaned forward, with the look of a concerned parent. “Blood, while I have no doubt you’ve endeared yourself to Valerie, she may or may not be messing with you.”

Blood-Wraith felt his face go a little red. “Okay, but I still did a good thing, didn’t I?”

    “Well yes, but…”

“Blood-Wraith Raynot,” Tiberius interrupted. “You were insistent on this little competition, so I suggest you take it seriously.”

“I suggest you take it seriously,” he repeated in a rude manner.

Tiberius immediately shot up from his chair and stood over Blood-Wraith. “Don’t talk back to me, boy!”

“I don’t have to take this, I helped save the Cosmos!”

“If you’re not going to take this seriously, then go home and play your video games while us, the adults, handle this!”

“Fine! I think I will!” Blood-Wraith shot back, stomping out of the room. Everyone else was a little taken aback.

“BAH, CHILDREN,” Tiberius complained again, his magic shaking the room. Alexia then got up to give him a hug, calming him down.

“I’ll go talk with him once he cools down,” Aureolus said as he got up and left the conference room.

Barry hummed with electricity for a moment, as if having an epiphany. “Well let’s be real for a second: Returning the golem parts was pretty based. I mean jeez, what if someone else came in and scooped them up?”

“Most certainly, Barry,” Cronus replied. “Being willing to extend the olive branch is ideal in curbing the cycle of violence.”

Tiberius sighed. “Yes, I do agree with those notions, but under normal circumstances that would be aiding the enemy…”

“With all due respect, Tiberius, these aren’t normal circumstances,” Cronus pointed out.

“Well obviously, given Valerie’s actions and ambitions.”

“Do we have to view her as the enemy?” Barry wondered. “Is she truly the enemy? Because me and my brother, Beauregard, have encountered way worse in the night realm.”

Tiberius took a breath to further ease his nerves. “No. While she is our opponent for this bout, she’s not our enemy.”

“Despite my sympathetic stance, I do get it,” Cronus clarified. “You want Blood to take this seriously, no two ways about it.”

“Precisely, Cronus,” Tiberius replied. “We know what The Eternal Order is capable of and I highly doubt we’ll run into another Valerie again.”

Barry gave off a frustrated hum of electricity. “I hate it when things are this complicated…”

“Aye, I can certainly raise a mug to that, Barry,” Jonathan sympathized. “Want to go get a drink after this?”

    “Thanks, John. That’d definitely help.”

Vexation calmly exhaled. “I miss the Epoch. It was such a simpler time.”

Before anything else could be said, a turquoise portal opened up off to the side, with Zal-Rint and Ultimatum stepping out of it. “Hey, guys, sorry we disappeared on you like that,” said Zal-Rint.

“Goodness, just what were you two up to?” Alexia inquired.

“Working on a contingency plan,” Ultimatum answered. “And we’re aware of what just happened.”

“A contingency plan?” Tiberius questioned. “A plan for what?”

Ultimatum took a seat at the table and went for a piece of candy. “Actually, we’d like to discuss that with you guys. John, Barry, Brandr? You don’t have to sit in on this if you don’t want to. It’s not all that exciting.”

“Alright then,” Jonathan said as he got up. “Never been one for politics, ha. Barry, Brandr, let’s go get that drink.”

“Sure thing, John,” his devil replied as he also got up.

“Ooh ooh, let’s get soft pretzels too!” Barry requested as they left. It was clear the three of them were feeling better.

“Zal, can you go get Serjiel?” Ultimatum requested.

“Be back in a flash,” he said as he vanished.

“Very good,” Ultimatum said with a chuckle. “Oh boy, is this plan a doozy and you’re going to have to hear me out on this one. You can thank Beorhtric for this crazy idea…”
