Guinevere had her squad up at the crack of dawn and off to the Fire-Elf settlement as quickly as possible. The Fire-Elves themselves were a strange variant of elves that had emerged during the Epoch-Transition phase of the Cosmos. Having incredible affinity for fire, volcanoes, and lightning, they had nowhere to go in the modern Cosmos and would erect a great city of crystal and bone in The Unlight. Within the great city was The Red Sky Guild, who specialized in harvesting and processing supplies and resources for those with enough coin (within reason). Valerie was a regular customer of theirs as they had access to special resources she needed for her experiments… Valerie’s old guild also told her not to interact with them, so it was a no brainer for the forlorn mage.
Valerie’s friends within the Red Sky Guild were a little confused when Guinevere showed up insisting that she would handle her mother’s usual shipment of supplies. And the fact that she was clearly skimping out on details and had members of the ULTRAMagic Guild with her made things even more confusing. Fortunately the Fire-Elves seemed to come around when Guinevere made it clear that they were still getting paid and Dragoslava added that it was just some minor family drama that they were clearing up as they spoke. Given Valerie’s track record, her friends were not surprised in hindsight.
Once Valerie’s usual freight cars were loaded up and ready to go, Blood-Wraith sighed and assumed the form of Violet Train. To say the Fire-Elves of The Red Sky Guild were impressed was an understatement. They had heard of Blood-Wraith, Dragoslava, and Desislav’s efforts to help Leif defeat The Lich of Old, but to see Blood-Wraith’s powers in action was truly amazing. Before Guinevere and her squad set off, one of her friends, Alara-Su, cast a spell on Blood-Wraith that made him look like the usual train. The illusion would not last long, but it would make it to Castle Ter Avest. With everything truly set and locked in, Blood-Wraith pulled out of the station and the group was finally on their way.
Blood-Wraith was unsure which lines to take, but thankfully Guinevere knew the way. Tending to Blood-Wraith’s boiler alone was certainly a difficult task, but Guinevere had to have the others hide in the freight cars. It would be a dead giveaway if any of them were manning the cabin with her. Guinevere naturally wondered if what she was doing was right as they neared the castle, but then she realized she was having fun as she shoveled a heavy load of coal into the firebox. She had always been the quiet one, which made her devious plan all the more exhilarating. The only thing truly bugging Guinevere, aside from a strange, nagging feeling, was that Violet Train’s bigger than usual cabin felt a bit empty with no one to talk to other than Blood-Wraith. She just had to accept this given what she was doing, however.
Eloise saw the train coming, put on her samurai armor, and went out to oversee the supply delivery. Everything seemed fine until she got a good look at the train. Something was not right as it was not the usual train, feeling strangely familiar to her, like she was looking at one of her friends. She would have written it off as nothing had Guinevere not hopped down from the cabin. Now Eloise knew something was up, especially given that her sister had been absent for so long.
“Guinevere, what are you doing? Where have you been? You had us worried sick…”
“Greetings, Eloise,” Guinevere replied, trying to maintain her cool. “I got this month’s supplies taken care of. As for where I was, I… I spent the night at Alara-Su’s, yes.”
Eloise nodded, albeit there was skepticism hidden in her gesture. “Okay then… Why are you undoing the coupling? The train has to go back with the freight cars, you know?”
“Um, well, you know…” Guinevere was mentally kicking herself for looking suspicious.
“And who’s operating the train if you’re here?” Eloise questioned as the locomotive made its way to the turntable.
“Oh, um… Alara? Alara-Su. She had to bend down… bend down to shovel the coal. Gotta keep that boiler burning!”
The sound of metal scraping against itself caught Eloise’s attention next as she noticed that the door of the first freight car had opened an inch. “Guinevere, where have you been?” she asked in a stern tone.
Blood-Wraith was almost in position and Guinevere knew Eloise was on to her… “Yeah, about that… Oh, hey! Is my Ceratosaurus egg here yet?”
“It’s on the way, but don’t change the subject…” she replied as she nudged her sister’s shoulder with her hand. “I’m not buying the ‘I got lost in the library again’ schtick, so spill it. Now.”
Guinevere looked over her shoulder to confirm Blood-Wraith’s position, then started warming up her hands with her magic. “Sister, just know that you have my sincerest apologies for what’s about to happen…”
“Excuse me!? And why is the train purple all of a sudden?!” It then dawned on her with her confusion giving way to a sinking feeling. “BLOOD-WRAITH?” Before anything else could be said, Eloise was sent flying back with a sudden burst of air, causing her to tumble across the ground.
“GUYS, NOW!” Guinevere called out.
The door to the first freight car thundered open with a slam and out hopped the entire squad. Dragoslava had her skin fully metalized, and Rostislav was hardening lava around his fist with fight in his eyes. The sound of arcing electricity came from Desislav as his torso was coated in a black, bioluminescent, organic membrane with glowing obsidian covering his arms. Eloise got up and bolted for Guinevere with her sword at the ready as she knew she had joined the ULTRAMagic Guild. As Yale and Ludwig joined Guinevere, Dragoslava halted Eloise with her metal arm and shoved her back with a magical wave of force. This allowed the trio to head into the castle, setting off the security systems and causing sirens to blare all around them.
“DAMN IT!” Eloise yelled as she summoned a second hardened sherbert katana. “Out of all the people to attack us! Don’t you get that we’re just trying to save the Unlight!?”
“Talk is cheap, kid!” Desislav said as he pointed at her with a hum of electricity. “Show us what you got,” he said, making a beckoning gesture with his hand.
Dragoslava banged her fists together, eager to duke it out. “Man, I thought I’d never get to go full metal again.”
Eloise growled as she assumed a ready stance with her swords. “I may watch too much anime, but don’t think I haven’t been practicing my sword skills…” a large group of ice cream golems and cake golems then joined her.
Rostislav laughed with fervor as he snapped his fingers, causing a fiery aura to flare up around him like a volcano. “Good! I’ve been dying to go all out!”
Guinevere guided Ludwig and Yale to the main laboratory only for the lab golems to block their way. “MOVE!” Guinevere commanded with force in her voice. They hesitated, but stood down out of respect.
“Beeindruckend,” Ludwig complimented as the trio made their way to the control room.
“It’s nothing…” Guinevere replied as she entered a series of commands into the main computer. “Sorry, mom… Alright, let’s be there when he thaws.”
“Alright, but be careful,” Yale warned. “Will’s never been through this before and he is a demon, so I have no idea what is going to happen…”
Ludwig gave a slightly nervous chuckle as they entered the experimentation room, with the sounds of machines whirring up mixing with the sirens. “Well good thing I’m here then…”
Warm, gentle lasers stuck the slab, steadily melting the ice cream. Will’s body was slowly freed, but something was not right. He was not waking up even though enough of his body had been liberated from his frozen prison. A ghostly figure was also starting to emerge that filled everyone with a sense of dread. The specter looked like a large, imposing, bipedal hellhound. It was covered in dark brown fur, had blood-red goat's horns, and what looked like dragon’s wings emerged from its back. The beast roared as loud as it could, shaking the laboratory as Ludwig went to protect Guinevere with his true form’s wings to shield them. As Yale scrambled to do something, anything at that point, a purple orb of light enveloped in a rainbow aura flew into Will’s body and made the spectral demon vanish.
“Augh, what the…argh!” Will groggily exclaimed as he tumbled down to the smooth floor, chunks of ice cream falling with him. “Hey, where’s my giant teddy bear I won at the darts game?” he questioned as laid on the floor with blurry vision and a cacophony of sirens filling his ears. He really wanted to go back to the amusement park.
“Will!” Yale said as he flew around his head, seemingly sprinkling a strange, sparkly dust on him. “Are you okay?”
Will’s vision gently cleared up. “Yale? What happened? Where are we?”
Ludwig then leaned over with a smile on his face. “Good to have you back, Private. How many fingers am I holding up?”
“5? No, 6… hold on, since when did you have 6?”
“Haha, I don’t,” Ludwig corrected as he shook his hand to dispel the illusion. “Do you think you can walk?”
Will tried to move his legs, only to barely shake them. “Not really…” he said as he tried to get up. “They’re pretty numb at the moment.”
“Alright, up we go then…” Ludwig said as he picked him up, putting his arm around his shoulders. “Guinevere, other side. Will try to work your legs as we make it out of here.”
Once Will was secure, the four started to make their way out of the lab and into the castle proper. “If I may ask, what in Abaddon was that terrible beast?” Guinevere inquired as they entered one of the halls.
“Heh, that was Zasiel’s true form,” Ludwig answered. “Monsterlock, as he calls it.”
Will was startled by this. “Wait, I really did that?”
“Yup,” Yale confirmed as he hovered around Will’s head. “And we’ve got a lot to discuss, mister… but we’ll save it for when we get to safety.”
Back outside, Dragoslava was waiting by the castle entrance while Rostislav dealt with the golems and Desislav handled Eloise. Rostislav was having a ball smashing golems to pieces, but Desislav was on the ropes as he struggled to block and deflect Eloise’s dual katana slashes. Dragoslava was getting nervous as Valerie could arrive at any moment, but breathed a sigh of relief when Ludwig and Guinevere emerged with Will. Will looked out of it, but was holding together. Noticing this, Blood-Wraith gave several puffs of his whistle to signal the retreat.
“Alright, let’s get…” Guinevere then noticed two people standing at the front gates looking a bit scared. “SHOOT, MY EGG! I got so wrapped up in the rescue that I forgot!”
“Drago, help me with Will!” Ludwig instructed.
“I’ll do you one better!” she said as she picked Will up and held him in her arms.
“What the…!?” he exclaimed
“Alright, let’s go, Guinevere!” Ludwig said as the two started to run to the outer gates.
Dragoslava gave a light giggle at Will’s continued surprise. “Don’t worry, Will, I’m a bodybuilder.” She then did her best to whistle to get Desislav’s attention. “We got him, Desislav! Let’s go!”
Desislav was caught off guard by that, but managed to knock Eloise away. “Well shoot, that’s my cue! Pardon me, Eloise…”
Eloise realized what was going on and charged forward with her swords at the ready. “OH NO YOU DON’T!” she roared. Unfortunately Desislav had an ace up his sleeve as he channeled electricity through his obsidian. A strange wave of something hit Eloise, causing her to lose her bearings and drop her blades. “You won’t… get away… with this!” she struggled to say as she stumbled around like a drunk person.
As for the pair that had arrived at the outer gates, they were from the dinosaur preservation facility. They appeared to be a married couple and resembled a mix of paleontologists and archaeologists. It was to be expected that they were weirded out when a strange looking man and woman broke off from the chaos before them to address the two. “And you would be?” the man asked as his female partner scooted an inch towards him.
“Guinevere Ter Avest, pardon the chaos,” Guinevere greeted while trying to catch her breath. “Just a little spring cleaning and whatnot…” she said with a nervous laugh as Rostislav caused a small explosion.
The woman looked at her husband and the two nodded. She then handed Guinevere a warm, glass capsule with an oval-shaped egg securely nestled inside of it. “Rightio, erm, the egg is close to hatching, but keep it inside until it starts breaking. And make sure he sees you first so you imprint on him.”
“Loud and clear, thank you very much,” Guinevere replied.
The man then handed a folder full of papers to Ludwig. “We’d ask you to sign the paperwork here and now, but we can see that you’re busy…” Another explosion went off. “You-you can mail them to us when you're done…”
Ludwig gave a respectful bow. “Danke. Auf Wiedersehen and have a safe trip home.” Once the couple was a safe distance away, Ludwig and Guinevere carefully began to run back to Blood-Wraith. “Wrap it up, Dracul!” he called out with hands cupped around his mouth.
Rostislav heard that and banged a golem that was getting up on the head. “Aw man, and I was having fun too…” he said as he began to follow the two.
By the time Eloise had regained her bearings, Blood-Wraith was leaving with everyone in the cabin, slowly chugging away as the iron wheels pulled the heavy locomotive forward. “WHY GUINEVERE?! WHY!?” Eloise cried as she ran with the train.
“I’m sorry, sister, but it has to be this way!” she called out with utmost sympathy in her voice.
Eloise stopped and stomped her feet in anger. “FINE! GO WITH THAT STUPID GUILD! WE’LL SAVE THE COSMOS WITHOUT YOU!” she screamed as tears ran down her face.
Guinevere had to look away as Blood-Wraith pulled away from Castle Ter Avest. “I’m so sorry, Eloise…” she said to herself as she watched the rails ahead of them.
Once things had settled down and everyone was comfortable, Will gave a sigh of relief. “Wow, being a popsicle wore me out… hey, where’s Blood? I figured he would have been here and I need to apologize to him…”
“Haha, you’re looking at him…” Desislav pointed out as he shoveled some coal.
It took Will a second, but he was in awe when the realization dawned on him. “Wait, this is Blood!? Are you serious?”
“Right here, Will!” two eyes above all of the gauges and instruments said. “But let’s wait until we’re back at the guild to talk. I need to focus and it feels like I’m running a marathon in the Sienna Plains right now…” the others chuckled a little at his apt comparison.
“Haha, simply amazing. Hey, Yale? I’m sorry, that plan was dumb…”
Yale buzzed with satisfaction. “Apology accepted. And Will? Let’s talk things out next time, okay?”
“Yeah. Sorry for getting captured guys…” After a round of forgiveness and reassurances, Will turned his attention to Guinevere. “Thanks for the help, Guinevere. And, uh, welcome to the guild.”
That snapped her out of her funk, causing her to shift her attention. “Ah, you’re welcome, Will. And thank you. Although we should probably save this conversation for a place where we can properly hear each other.”
“Yeah, I hear you there… Haha! No pun intended!”
