If one had expected the guild to not be in utter chaos over Will’s abduction, there was a rude awakening ready to go for them. Ludwig was going to explain Will’s situation nice and easy, but Yale ruined that plan when he got on Will (absent as he was) and Blood-Wraith’s cases in front of the others. The main hall had devolved into a massive uproar, with some in favor of charging into Castle Ter Avest head first, some wanting to devise a careful plan, and a few criticizing Blood-Wraith. Tiberius and Alexia tried to get everyone to settle down and stop arguing, but this was to no avail.
Ludwig was annoyed to no end as he had dealt with this kind of disorder before and was getting uncomfortable flashbacks to the event that had brought him to The Unlight in the first place. He felt his anger mounting as there were more important things to discuss and the back and forth was getting them nowhere. After shooting Yale an annoyed look, he let loose a thundercrack that shook the room and even the guild hall itself, quelling the cacophony from his guild mates. Everyone had been caught off guard by this and were legitimately scared Ludwig was going to do something else.
Ultimatum and Zal-Rint had returned from checking on something important related to Valerie to find everyone uneasy and confused. Given that there was a great deal of worry, the two said what they could. No one was thrilled to hear that the odds of Valerie abducting Will had been super high to begin with. Jonathan and Weaver were still about to charge out, but Ludwig ordered them to stop. It was getting late and they all needed to cool off and relax. Zal-Rint vouched that Will would be okay, even though it slightly overstepped his bounds as a Time Watcher. Thankfully he had a feeling that his superiors would understand.
Blood-Wraith could not sleep that night, and his anxiety became so bad that he had to spend the night over at the Raynot mansion. Radovan and Rose were there to comfort him and spent the night talking things out with the poor boy. Blood-Wraith realized over the course of his discussion that Will’s abduction was something else he needed to avoid. Radovan naturally assured Blood-Wraith that the game was not over and now was his time to respond accordingly, as the ball was in his court after all. This seemed to ease Blood-Wraith’s nerves, allowing him to fall asleep. The following day there was a meeting at the guild hall to discuss what the next course of action was and Blood-Wraith attended with a stiff upper lip.
“Alright, let’s cut the crap and get down to brass tacks,” Blood-Wraith announced as he entered the situation room. He was greeted by the sight of Tiberius, Vexation, Deimos, Alexia, Ultimatum, Dragoslava, Cronus, and Serjiel, who all chuckled at Blood-Wraith’s fervor.
“Well pardon my saying, Blood, but that’s what we were about to do,” Tiberius replied.
“Ah, right. Hey, where’s Ludwig and Rostislav?”
“We’re having them keep the others calm while we discuss our plans going forward,” Cronus answered. “Although Yale said he’d be here…”
“Sorry, sorry!” Yale called out as he flew in and sat on the table in front of the chair Will would have probably sat in. “John and Rostislav were getting a little riled up, haha.”
Tiberius got up, went to a display screen showing what they knew, and cleared his throat to speak. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are facing one of our first true challenges. Valerie has abducted Will and we need to get him back. The time to figure out how to go about this is here and now.”
“Can we try asking nicely?” Deimos put forth.
Whereas normally that idea would have been shot down, the others seemed to be actually considering the suggestion. “We’ll make that plan C, Eustorgio,” Tiberius concluded.
Vexation laughed. “And plan D is him proposing to Valerie.” This made the others laugh, with Deimos having turned a bit red in the face.
“If I may,” Serjiel put in. “Valerie is a complex individual, no two ways about it. She respects might with integrity, but wit is also fairly high up on her list. The question now is do we go in through the back door or the front door?”
“How do we feel about the front door?” Alexia inquired. “I am fairly skilled with frontal assaults, owed to my days as a tactician during the Epoch.”
Tiberius glanced over to the data for a second. “I feel that should be plan B, as Valerie seems like the type to be prepared for such occurrences.”
“So I guess we use the back door then?” Dragoslava questioned. “How do we get in though? I am a professional at sneaking, but I’d need a good entry point. Any ideas, Schwarzes? Since, you know, you’re 7D?”
Ultimatum sighed. “If this was Earth, I’d have you there right now. Hell, I’d have dad back here in no time at all. The Unlight is non-linear, making it incredibly hard to read. It’d be a shot in the dark for me.”
“Right…” Dragoslava rested her head on her hand to think. “Come on, Drago, you helped defeat The Lich of Old…”
“Well if you need help, I may know a backdoor you could sneak in through…” a familiar voice said.
Everyone was startled by that, with Dragoslava going out into the hall. “Guinevere? Where did you come from? Come on in…” She promptly brought her in and sat her down in her chair.
“How did she get in!?” Yale exclaimed as he buzzed around Guinevere’s head.
“Yes, I’d like to know that too…” Tiberius concurred.
“Oh, well, I just cast an illusion on myself to take on the appearance of Dunja,” Guinevere answered.
Tiberius was baffled, as the security system was impeccable. He glanced at Deimos who shrugged, then back to Guinevere. “Just what kind of magic did you use?”
“A void spell from The Flame God. He also helped me develop my pyromancy in case you’re curious.”
Vexation nodded, certainly impressed. “Another point to Valerie, aye, Eustorgio? Ha!” That comment made Deimos groan a little, as he took pride in the work he had done on the security system. “Alright, little lady, what’s your business with us?”
She took a breath, quickly composing her thoughts before speaking. “I’m not happy about Will’s predicament, and mother’s quest to unite The Unlight is a fool’s errand. I wish to employ the guild’s help to knock mother down a peg. She needs to realize she can’t stop The Eternal Order alone.”
Everybody was nodding, with Blood-Wraith tapping Guinevere on the shoulder. “First off, you, you-that switchero with the gem was genius. As for Will, what did Valerie want with him?”
“She wanted to study his ULTRAMagic so she could pursue it herself…”
“Wait, really!? Why didn’t she just join the guild then?!”
“That’s what I said yesterday!” She agreed.
Tiberius sighed, with some left over frustration from before coming to the surface. “Care to explain to our guest why Valerie isn’t currently a member of the guild, Sir Raynot?”
Blood-Wraith had no rebuttal, so he sank into his chair. “I’m sorry, Guinevere,” he partially mumbled.
“Oh no, I don’t blame you, Blood-Wraith,” Guinevere assured him. “Mother let herself get swept up in the excitement of having a worthy opponent. She has trouble trusting others, so she wants to prove to herself that she can stand tall without anyone’s help… despite crafting Eloise and I…”
Feeling a little nostalgia from long ago, Ultimatum chuckled. “Kind of reminds me of my older brother, Igantius, back when I met The Vermilion King. It also makes me think Valerie didn’t properly recover from getting expelled from her old guild… hum, we may need to do something about that…” After taking a second to think about the matter, he got back on track. “So what do you have in mind, Guinevere?”
“Tomorrow mother will be receiving her usual shipment of supplies from The Red Sky Guild in the City of The Fire-Elves. I suggest we head down there and take care of the shipment ourselves…”
“Ooh, I likey,” Dragoslava complimented. “And assuming they use a train, we got the perfect replacement right here,” she said as she ruffled Blood-Wraith’s hair.
“Do I have to use Violet Train again?” he complained, receiving a sympathetic nod from Guinevere.
“Alright then…” Yale noted as hovered around Guinevere, seemingly trying to see if she was lying. “But who’s going with you two?”
“We’ll definitely need back up for this and I believe I have picked out the right guild members,” she answered. “I request you, Dragoslava, Desislav, Ludwig, and Rostislav. Drago, Desislav, and Rostislav shall distract Eloise while Ludwig and Yale accompany me to rescue Will.”
Serjiel nodded as he processed the proposal in his head. “A sound plan, but what about your mother?”
“She’s leaving today to find the rest of her fragments, so I am banking on her being gone long enough to pull this off. She’s good at traveling around The Unlight, so the window will be tight. If we can’t be on time, we can’t pull this off.”
“Alright then. What do you think of this, Tiberius?”
“I see no problem with the plan, assuming Guinevere is being truthful with us,” he replied, turning his attention to her.
“I swear on my honor as a Ter Avest,” Guinevere said with a raised hand.
“And I’ll vouch too,” Dragoslava added. “She’s on the level as she’s been the one slipping us and the royal alchemists the information about The Singularity Gem.”
“Don’t mention it,” Guinevere said with a giggle. “Um, if it’s not too much of a problem, I’d also like to join the ULTRAMagic Guild…” This surprised the others, even if it was to be expected.
“Well of course you can!” Blood-Wraith said as he banged the table. “Cronus?”
“Ah, right, ahem,” he replied, caught a tad off guard. “Since this is a special case, I would like to put it to a vote. All for?” Everyone raised their hand. “Any opposed?” There were no objections, which made Blood-Wraith visibly happy. “And that’s that. Welcome to the guild, Guinevere. Now obviously you’ll be expected to achieve ULTRAMagic while in the guild…”
“Oh, erm, I’m not sure if I’m ready for that yet…” she interjected.
“Don’t worry about it, Guinevere,” Blood-Wraith assured her. “Take as much time as you need with this. We can wait.” That made her smile.
“And you’ll also have to pick a codename…” Cronus started to say.
“Do we have the codename system ratified yet, Cronus?” Serjiel inquired.
“I… I don’t know. Things have been a bit hectic as of late… err, don’t worry about that for now, Guinevere. We’ve been a bit all over the place. As an aside, it’s a good thing my son, Ares, isn’t here. He would have taken Valerie by the hand and led her on an entire war campaign against The Eternal Order, haha.”
“Oh dear, that’d be no good,” she agreed.
Alexia then got up and went over to where Guinevere was sitting. “No matter what, we’re happy to have you as a member, dear. Would you like to come with me and pick out a room here? A little home away from home?”
“Thanks, Alexia. That would be fantastic.”
“I’ll come with,” Dragoslava said as she followed them out of the room. “Tiberius did a fantastic job, but this place can be a pain to maneuver at times…”
Tiberius was taken aback by that. “Did I make the guild hall that complex?” The others slowly nodded.
After a moment’s pause in which everyone collected their thoughts, Blood-Wraith nodded and spoke up. “Well, that went well.”
“And no arguments this time,” Yale playfully chided. “Still, are we sure we can trust her? She is Valerie’s daughter after all…”
“Given that we’ve had the least amount of troubles with her?” Deimos put forth. “I’m willing to trust her… and no, it’s not because of my interest in Valerie…”
“Fair enough, Eustorgio,” Vexation replied. “But it’s always the quiet ones…”
Tiberius nodded, albeit out of humoring him rather than agreeing. “True, Ermenrich, but her convictions and grievances seemed genuine. I’ll trust her. Meeting adjourned, gentlemen.”
Over at Castle Ter Avest, Valerie was making the final preparations for her small quest, but was also looking for something. “Eloise, dear? Have you seen Guinevere?”
“Not since breakfast,” she replied as she stepped into the grand hall. “She’s either off brooding or got lost in one of the libraries again…”
“Goodness, I hope she’s doing alright. I just wanted to tell her I was heading off, but I really need to get going…”
“Don’t worry, mom. I’ll keep an eye out for her and tell her what’s up.”
Valerie sighed. “Alright then. Good bye for now, sweetie. I should be back by tomorrow if everything goes according to plan. If anything happens, call The ULTRAMagic Guild, The Fire-Elves, or The Iron City Royal Guard for help.”
“Wait, the ULTRAMagic guild? Excuse me?” Eloise had a fairly incredulous look on her face.
“Yes, dear. We are both fighting The Eternal Order and they would be our greatest allies in the case of a surprise attack. I’m not going to let this little contest of ours put us in danger.”
Eloise shook her head and chuckled. Valerie had a very good point all things considered. “Fair enough. Bye, mom.”
“Wish me luck and stay safe, dear.”
Once Valerie had left the castle with her group of golems, Eloise made her way to the castle’s cold storage, where Will was being kept. Making her way past the crates of magical ice cream, she found Will’s slab laying on some palettes and took a seat. The cold did not bother her since she was made of ice cream. She also found the hum of the freezer quite relaxing. Will’s frozen expression was a little off putting, but she felt she could speak her mind at that moment.
“Hey, Billy? Mind if I ramble a little? I feel worried, truth be told. Mom’s plan is golden, but I think it needs more oomph… no idea how…” She was hoping Will would say something, but things stayed quiet. “I mean jeez, Anne and Gudrun are that bad, so do I need an army of my own? Perhaps a metal one? A Metal Empire? And that’s the thing, Billy, I can do it. All I have to do is go to The Metal Oasis and ask nicely.” Eloise paused and sighed, remembering how complex her ambitions were. “Ultimately I have no idea what to do. I don’t want the Unlight falling to The Eternal Order, as mom showed me how bad they are. I’m also worried about Guinevere. She’s not on board with the plan and I don’t know how to convince her. She’s just as worried as I am and I need to be there for my little sister. I need to keep everyone safe, you feel me, Billy?” Still nothing but the low hum of the freezer. “Right, forgot I turned you into a popsicle. Sorry about that, Billy. It was nothing personal and we’ll have you back to the guild soon enough. I promise.”
