Valentina showed up out of nowhere with Blood-Wraith and Dragoslava in the usual conference room and calmly took a seat. It was perfect timing as Tiberius, Deimos, Vexation, Alexia, Zal-Rint, Ultimatum, and Cronus were already there, discussing guild matters. The group was surprised as she just sat there, collecting her bearings. “That was unexpected…” Valentina remarked, a hint of guilt in her voice as she looked at the card she had taken.

“Did everything go alright, Valentina?” Deimos inquired.

“Val?” Blood-Wraith calmly asked, his facial expression betraying his tone. “YOU COULD’VE HANDLED IT,” he exclaimed as he shook her (or at least tried to).

Alexia was a bit confused. “Dragoslava, dear? What happened?”

She sighed and facepalmed. “Valentina got cold feet when Valerie revealed she was a hexer…”

“Excuse me, WHAT?” Vexation cut in. “VAL, you could’ve handled it!”

“But aren’t hexes nearly the same as curses?” she sheepishly questioned.

“No!” Blood-Wraith and Vexation said in unison. “I mean, yes, argh…”

“Blood, stop copying me,” Vexation lightly snapped.

    “Oops, sorry, Vex…”

Vexation took a breath to ease his nerves before he spoke again. “Val, hexes are not like curses in power, nor potency. I’ll concede that they have a unique form of versatility, but that’s it. They require a physical catalyst, making them inferior to curses, which only require knowledge to cast.”

“Oh…” Valentina sank a little in her chair, feeling bad. “Sorry, Blood…” she mumbled, warranting a slight groan from him.

“Let’s not rake her over the coals for this,” Cronus interjected. “We don’t know what is in Valerie’s deck and an unknowable opponent is quite dangerous after all…”

“Something I’d imagine you’re experienced with, given your showdowns with Zeus…” Vexation playfully chided.

Cronus was speechless as he gave him an incredulous look. “How did you…?”

Vexation laughed, somewhat at Cronus’ expense. “You think Drusa hasn’t told me about your past?”

“Hmpf, quite the talk coming from someone who thought it was a good idea to go to The Lich of Old for help…”

“BOY!” Vexation said as he slammed his hands on the table. “At least I didn’t help give birth to a god who wants to knock up every woman under the sun!”

“ENOUGH,” Tiberius said in a raised voice. “Gentlemen, let’s not bite our heads off over something so trivial.”

“Well I wouldn’t say that the discovery of another hexer is trivial, Tiberius,” Deimos put forth.

    “It’s the principle, Eustorgio.”

    “Ah… fair point.”

Vexation gave a frustrated sigh as he relaxed in his chair. “So now what?”

“We could always go with Beorhtric’s idea,” Ultimatum pointed out, with Zal-Rint nodding in agreement.

“Beorhtric’s idea?” Blood-Wraith tried to recall. “Oh yeah, the Future Squad, right?”

Tiberius exhaled in slight frustration. “Are you sure about this, Schwarzes? Time travel is and will always be a messy business…”

Ultimatum leaned forward, looking more confident than usual. “There’s no need to worry, as any potential paradoxes will not be an issue. This entire mission will be overseen and sanctioned by the Time Watchers, meaning any outcomes that occur are meant to happen. Valerie has done research on us and knows how to push our buttons, so I say we return the favor and throw her a curveball by calling on three mages from 10 years into the future.” He looked quite proud of himself after that as sat there patiently with his hands locked together on the table.

“10 years, brother,” Dragoslava said to Blood-Wraith as she patted him on the back.

“I know,” he replied. “It still boggles my mind…”

“Schwarzes, if I may,” Cronus put in. “I get that one of the mages you want to bring here means a lot to you, but are you sure he’s right for the job? I stepped onto Earth in the 2020s to do a little research and while he is capable, the Red River City incident did get a bit out of hand…”

“Your concerns are certainly heard, Cronus,” Ultimatum replied with reassurance in his voice. “Not only will this help us, it should also help the future guild as well.”

Valentina seemed a little uneasy about the idea as she sat up in her chair. “That’s all well and good, Schwarzes, but are you sure you’re sure about this? Not to rain on your parade, sweetie, but there’s a good reason why Heaven typically avoids time travel and divine intervention.”

Blood-Wraith made some audible thinking noises as he paced back and forth. “Will we get along with them though?”

“Zal and I have hand picked them for their skills, insight, and personal chemistry,” Ultimatum assured. “Besides, getting them here will take about three to four days, setting things up and finalizing them. If there are any kinks, we’ll iron them out then.”

Blood-Wraith could tell that Ultimatum was leaving out certain details, but his confidence and excitement was somewhat reassuring. “Alright, I guess. Tiberius, Alexia? What do you think?”

“I’m in favor of this, if the results bear fruit,” Alexia reasoned. “It is a bit messy and unorthodox, but so was my battle against Lord Fire-Axe, The Conqueror, back in the Epoch. Sometimes you just have to go with the most hairbrained plans to actually make progress, as uncomfortable as the prospects seem. Your thoughts, Tiberius?”

Tiberius groaned a little as he thought it over, weighing the positives and negatives in his mind. “If this gives us a definitive advantage against Valerie, then I will entertain the idea… of course we would not be in this mess if someone had not sabotaged my attempts at negotiation with her…” Blood-Wraith was going to make a rebuttal, but held his tongue as he knew Tiberius was right.

“Excellent!” Ultimatum celebrated. “Alright, Zal, let’s go… Here comes the boring stuff.”

Zal-Rint chuckled, snapping his fingers and summoning his usual, turquoise portal. “Look at it this way: At least we don’t have to go anywhere this time,” he said as they stepped through the portal, with it vanishing behind them.

There was a moment of silence as everyone collected their thoughts, with it being broken by a sigh from Vexation. “Cronus? I’m sorry about the Zeus comments…”

He smiled in forgiveness. “I understand your frustration, Vex. I’m sorry too.”

“Yeah… Well if we’re all done here, I’m going to go kick back a little. Blood, Val, Drago, want to go watch a movie?”

“Fine with me, especially after that little rollercoaster,” Dragoslava replied. “I’m going to go get Desislav, Blood. That fine with you?”

“Yup, sure,” he answered. “You guys want to watch Ultra Quest: Episode II? I got the special edition recently.”

“That sounds lovely, Blood,” said Valentina. “Or if we’re feeling bold, we could have Gabriella recommend a movie from Earth…”

“Ooh, sounds interesting,” Blood-Wraith said as they began to leave the room. “See you all later. You know where to find us, Tiberius.”

“Have fun with your movie, whatever you decide on,” he wished as they trailed off down the hallway. “I could go for a little relaxation myself, if I am being honest.”

Alexia then got up, gesturing for the others to follow suit. “Then how about we go get the projector in the main hall finally set up?”

“A capital idea, my dear,” Tiberius agreed as he and the others left the room. “Thankfully we seem to finally have a lull amongst all this rigmarole…”

The next two days saw Ultimatum and Zal-Rint spending time at the Time Watcher Sanctuary, getting the clearance they needed, accompanied by Beorhtric of The Arbiters of Droom (since it was his idea after all). There were a great deal of events in the Flow of Time that they needed to check beforehand, leading to two all-nighters in a row. On the third day, the three got into contact with Future-Ultimatum. He was a little surprised, but was also not given that he had executed the idea in the past, so it was only a matter of time before his past self contacted him.

Upon Ultimatum requesting ULTRAMagic Lance, ULTRAMagic Richter, and ULTRAMagic Shadow, the group was warned of a couple of things. The first was that only recently had Lance come out of his shell so-to-speak and was starting to be more friendly to the other guild members. Richter was still exercising his rivalry with Lance, so that had to be treated with care. And Shadow had grown a bit full of himself in recent times, not helped by Richter. Zal-Rint and Beorhtric were a little concerned by this, which was compounded when Ultimatum pretty much handwaved these developments.

With everything set for the most part, Future-Ultimatum spent the following days rounding up the Future Squad. While this was happening, Blood-Wraith was taking it easy with Vexation, Drusa, and Valentina. The second day of his wait saw Brenna escort Eloise to Blood-Wraith’s house, as she had a gift for him. Blood-Wraith was taken off guard, but happily accepted a set of DVDs that consisted of an anime adaptation of the manga he had been previously given. There were four seasons, but seasons three and four were split into two parts, which confused him. Eloise explained that Universe-23 was annoying like that, of which Blood-Wraith figured he would ask Shadow more since the mage was from Earth-23.

On the morning of the fourth day of Blood-Wraith’s wait, he got out of bed feeling like something was different. He looked out the window and saw the same old Iron City, with the magnificent Singing Storm Tower floating in the sky in the distance. After making his bed, he went downstairs, with everyone present and enjoying breakfast. Blood-Wraith continued to audibly ponder and think as he sat down at the table next to Valentina, who was having some pancakes.

“What’s up, Kiddo?” Drusa asked as she got him something to eat. “Nervous about the Future Squad?”

“Yeah, but it’s not that-thanks. Drusa, have you ever woken up and felt like something’s changed? Like, something important just happened…” he supposed as he started eating his cereal.

“All the time, Blood,” she replied as she sat back down. “But I get what you’re referring to. I sensed it too.”

Vexation looked up at them, folded his newspaper, and took a sip of his coffee. “Perhaps we should head over to the guild soon then.”

Blood-Wraith thought about it as he ate some more of his cereal, followed by some of his toast. “Yeah, soon.” He then sighed a little. “Vex, I’m not being a jerk to the guild, am I?”

Vexation paused to consider his words, not wanting to upset him. “Well, um… a handful? Maybe. A jerk? Not at all. You’re still young, so it is to be expected.”

“I did get pretty heated with John though. He got angry at me and then I flipped him off…” This made Drusa snicker. “Um, Drusa? Not helping my guilt here…”

“My apologies, Blood, but Aphrodite would have loved that attitude. Mind you she would have told you to save it for the enemy though.”

“Ha, I don’t know if an Atlantean war goddess is the best role model, dear,” Vexation pointed out as Drusa chuckled again.

“Blood, don’t beat yourself up over stuff like this,” Valentina said as she massaged his shoulder a little. “You were a little hot-headed, but we all have our bad moments. You should have seen it when Achasiah told me the truth about Shadowland. I’m still kicking myself for how harsh I was on him…”

Blood-Wraith gave a sigh of relief. “John actually complimented me for that bird after things settled down… by sending me a message in a bottle.”

Valentina laughed. “Goodness, what did he say?”

“Well that he would have treated me to a drink if I was of age. He also said that on the high seas I would have been swabbing the deck for a while, but also that it takes guts to stand up to a sailor like that.”

Vexation also had to laugh. “Good thing he has a sense of humor then. He keeps moving forward, something to be expected from someone in his line of work. Take notes from him, Blood.”

After drinking the milk from his cereal and wiping his face, Blood-Wraith got up to stretch a little and straighten out his back. “That’s life for you. At least we’re not dealing with any liches this time around, ha. I hope the Future Squad is chill like John is…”

“Honestly, I think you’ll come to like them, Blood,” Drusa assured.

He paused for a moment, getting a weird feeling from the Spiritus Magni. “How do you… oh right, fifth dimensional stuff. It always weirded me out when Leif did that…”

The conversation was interrupted by Aureolus bursting in through the front door and rushing over to them. His fire hawk was perched on his shoulder (who was a little excited by all of the commotion) and he was holding a piece of paper. “Blood, Ignis just brought me a letter from Tiberius! The Future Squad is on their way!”

“Wait, already!?” Blood-Wraith said as he quickly read the letter.

“Well shoot, let’s get the lead out, kids!” Vexation urged. “Drusa?”

“One second…” she waved her finger, casting a spell that caused the dirty dishes to hover over to the kitchen sink and begin washing themselves. “Alright, let’s go!”

    “Very good. Val?”

“Go on ahead, Vex, I’ll catch up. There will be something for me to take care of here.”

Blood-Wraith was a little confused, but accepted that Valentina knew something he did not. “We’ll see you there, Val,” he called out as he rushed out the door with the others.

After checking her watch, Valentina made sure everything was set in the house and stepped outside, locking the door behind her. “Better get over to the train station. Will will be here any minute…”

Everything was a rush of excitement and mild anxiety for Blood-Wraith, as he could not shake his anticipation. He was looking forward to meeting the Future Squad, but was worried about whether or not things would go well. Could he behave himself or would they justify his ire? Butterflies filled Blood-Wraith’s stomach and it was annoying him to no end as he arrived at the guild hall. A handful of guild members were already waiting outside in the front courtyard, with the rest joining them as time went on. Tiberius welcomed Blood-Wraith and could see that he was quite nervous too, comforting him with a pat on the back. The eons-old mage was just as anxious, so it gave him some comfort that Blood-Wraith shared his sentiment, helping to ease both of their nerves.
