Will was late… late for being early as he stepped through the front doors of the Gough Huxley U.S. Courthouse, incredibly nervous. Adjusting his tie with one hand and carrying a thin suitcase in the other, a kind staff member caught him meandering about and pointed him in the direction of the courtroom. Poking his head in, he noticed Abraham and the others standing in the gallery, and they had noticed him–but Will was smart and was not going to get caught in the trap of going over to them without checking in. After speaking to the clerk, Will hurried on over to others in the back of the courtroom, as another hearing was wrapping things up. Standing with Abraham was Anton, Wendelin, and General Aalders. Having one of his commanding officers present seemed to help calm Will down, and he was going to need it for what was about to come…
“A little late, Specialist, but better late than never,” Aalders pointed out in a quieter tone of voice so as not to disturb the courtroom. “Wearing your glasses today?”
Will exhaled through his nose with a light scoff. “You think I’m going to try putting contacts on on a day like today?”
“Fair point, Ford, fair…” Aalders then noticed the high quality of Will’s royal blue business suit. “Goodness, Anton, that much money for this nonsense?”
Anton chuckled, despite his mounting tension. “While I didn’t go all out, that’s pocket change for me at this point.”
“It never hurts to dress to impress,” Wendelin put in. “Especially given that this is the first time he’s been properly involved in court.”
“Well I have come close before,” Will noted as he tightened and loosened his grip on the handle of his suitcase.
“As you do,” said Wendelin as he glanced over to Laurence’s group, who were huddled and trying to keep their words hushed. “Arsch mit Ohren…” he grunted towards those unbearable men. “Will, you brought all of the documents we requested?” Will nodded and held up the suitcase. “Sehr gut.”
Abraham glanced back and forth to make sure no one was listening in, and leaned forward. “Will, you also brought Haze, correct?” This received a nod as Will wobbled the suitcase a little. “And assuming Cliff is ready to go, are the others on their way?”
“Absolutely–Sam wouldn’t miss this either way, and Pace and Liam will be here after they get Gemini ready to go.”
“Good, because Anton and The Owl God are afraid Laurence is definitely going to try and pull something, and I definitely see why now…” Abraham’s tone sent a chill down Will’s spine, even though he was ready to see Laurence sued into the ground.
To say the first hearing was already a joke from the start was a fair assessment. While General Aalders was given a moment to address the courtroom and remind everyone in attendance that they had to sign a non-disclosure agreement given what was going to be presented, the honorable Judge Clancy Geofrey Waldroup had to give Laurence a glare as he knew he was going to be disruptive. The proceedings began and Wendelin would give his side of things, while also speaking on Will’s behalf–a move that indicated how nervous Will was, which the jury picked upon quickly, with Laurence’s lawyers planning to exploit that fact as Kenneth whispered to one of them. Given what Wendelin had started alluding to and what he could say about Will’s actions during The Red River City Incident, the case seemed to already be heading in their favor.
Laurence tried to give his side of the story, but was stumbling over himself given some of the dirty secrets of his father that Wendelin had begun to touch upon. And the jurors were already scowling given that he tried to pull his slander of Will nonsense again. Calling other witnesses quickly turned into a quiet circus as Will was called to the stand. On one hand, this was to be expected, but on the other his heart was racing and his throat had dried out. Sam and Quincy were silently panicking from the public seats, while Antonio and Pace remained stone-faced. Laurence’s lawyer tried to drill Will for information about the shadow construct horde, but Will had to repeatedly state that there was some information he could not reveal for the sake of national security. General Aalders would intervene, clarifying that Will was under his orders, and that he would have to be called up to the stand if they wanted such information. This shut Laurence’s lawyer up, and the judge dismissed Will from the stand… Will was legitimately considering using his void magic to end the case right then and there as his neck vented a faint plume of sickly yellow and red smoke.
Cross-examination was well and truly a mess at this point, as Laurence’s lawyers were incompetent, looking for ‘gotcha moments’ rather than actually making a case. Abraham figured it was time to bring in the big guns, so he called Caelan as a witness. Laurence elbowed one of his lawyers to object, but this was shot down immediately. There was then another objection on the grounds of Caelan being a ghost, but Abraham pointed out that the boy was a perfectly competent witness… and that Laurence had already leaked information relating to the magic anomalies of The Red River City Incident. The judge was on board with his logic and allowed Caelan to take the stand. Caelan gave his story, and naturally was interrupted by an objection, of which the judge humored but overruled given that it was an attempt to silence the witness–and what Laurence did not know was that Clancy had been looking into the mine collapses on his own time, completely unrelated to the trial. Suffice it to say the jury was horrified to learn what Caelan had gone through.
Laurence was starting to panic… which was baffling from a cosmic perspective because he had honestly thought Wendelin was on his side up until Caelan was called to the stand. That sheer, unmitigated gall was astounding–Wendelin could easily sense what Laurence was thinking. The Thunder God was cackling in the higher dimensions as his human avatar reveled in the legal and moral thrashing Laurence and Kenneth were receiving, and he could not get enough of it. Truthfully he wanted to go get The Sepulcher God and Volf Blitz so they could watch the show with him and maybe have some popcorn to go along with it, but now was not the time for that. Wendelin wanted to drive the final nail into the coffin, for his own agenda, and for Will and Anton–both were dragged into his petty nonsense and he needed to get back to his business. Wendelin gave Abraham the go-ahead, leading to Lionel being called to the stand–notably he had taken on a ‘human form’ that looked like a blonde, younger version of Will.
A loud objection rang throughout the courtroom, but the judge shot it down immediately. After Lionel swore under oath, took the stand, and reverted to his true form, another objection assaulted the ears of the jury and the audience. Clancy had had enough and shouted “YOU OBJECT ONE MORE TIME AND I WILL HOLD YOU IN CONTEMPT OF COURT!” at the petulant lawyer with a bang of his gavel. Naturally the dullard objected as soon as Lionel started to talk, leading to the main lawyer being escorted out of the courtroom. He also had to be tased for fighting with the police officers. Clancy then shot Laurence an ‘open your mouth and I’ll end the trial right here and now’ look. Once things had settled down, Abraham quietly gave Lionel a gesture of encouragement, and the boy spoke of his origin, and how he was an illegal clone of Will–Wendelin was allowed to explain himself, stating that while he did follow Sebastian and Laurence’s orders, he could not deny the poor boy the spark of life, making it clear that Lionel was a work of art with immense potential for great things. While the jury was not thrilled by Wendelin’s convictions, they were too appalled at Laurence to care.
And that was it–Laurence finally realized that he was done for. Sebastian was nowhere to be found and Wendelin was a traitor… and then Laurence heard a mocking, bellowing laugh that drowned out everything–The Thunder God was loving every moment of his enemy’s suffering. Of course he immediately sensed Laurence beckoning that insufferable Audoin Dethbrand for power in a pathetic attempt to paint himself as someone who had been backed into a corner. The Thunder God promptly warned The Tyrant God of what was about to happen, ready for a fight. Anton looked over to see Laurence convulsing and frothing at the mouth, turning red and letting out steam. General Aalders immediately noticed this too, and the two shot up to warn everyone. There was an uproar as everyone panicked, but this was cut off by an explosion of steam and energy that killed the majority of Laurence’s lawyers.
The commotion could be heard from outside the courthouse, but what onlookers and passersby had not expected was a giant, centaur-like ogre crossed with a horse to be thrown through the wall, with a winged, bipedal hellhound roaring at the monstrosity he had just thrown. “I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS FROM THE START!” Will barked.
“I’LL KILL YOU ALL!!!” Laurence howled as he struggled to coordinate himself, destroying cars left and right. In his rage he started firing off lasers made of fowl energy from the mouths appearing all over his body.
“SHIT SHIT SHIT!” Pace panicked as he started to call for backup. “LIAM, GET ANY PEDESTRIANS OUT OF HERE!”
“ON IT!” he called out as he ran over to the people trying to record the battle, hurrying them away.
“Unerträgliches Stück Scheiße!” Wendelin cursed, as he did not expect Laurence to go that overboard. He snapped his fingers, summoning a group of the cleanest-looking, metallic shadow constructs that hummed with electricity. “Raus mit ihnen allen!” he instructed them, pointing towards General Aalders and Abraham helping the police officers get everyone safely out of the building.
“BOYO, LOOK OUT!” Morrigan called out as she and the others made their way to the hole in the wall.
Will saw Laurence charging up an attack, and shielded himself with his wings. “ARGH!” he cried out in pain as the foul beam hit him, causing him to fall backwards. In a burst of steam he had reverted back to his human form. “Damn it… still don’t have the hang of that…” he said as Quincy and Antonio helped him up.
“WHERE’S THAT RAT BASTARD KENNETH?!” Scotty called out as he looked around with his greatsword already electrified. He then saw Kenneth teleport away and roared, overcharging his sword and sending a wave of lighting towards Laurence, which sent the beast tumbling back. “DAMN IT ALL! Will, you okay?”
“I’ll be fine…”
“Here, I’ll keep him busy,” he said as he went and started trying to slash the flailing beast.
A triumphant roar was heard from the roof of the building, followed by Shark-X jumping into the action. “YAHOO!!!” he cried as he landed on Laurence and began laying into him, only to get thrown off. “SHIT!” he shouted as he smacked the ground and landed near the group. “Ow, going to feel that one in the morning, ha…”
Thankfully Mary and Mayhem were right behind him, and they were being a bit more tactful. “SHARK, YOU IDIOT–that wasn’t a part of the plan!” Mary chastised as she summoned a pair of Tommy Guns and opened fire on Laurence, with Mayhem supporting her with his chaos magic.
“ARE YOU ALL OKAY?” Anton questioned as he rushed over. “Don’t worry–Aalders, Wendelin, Caelan, and Abraham are taking care of the courthouse.
“We’re fine,” Antonio answered as he helped Shark-X up. “Also damn, Mary’s got some fine guns!” As a former Mafioso, he was impressed.
“Which ones?” Shark-X said with a laugh, making Antonio laugh too.
“BOYS,” Morrigan chided, even though she also found that joke funny. “We have an Audoan knight to deal with–”
“Bastard knight, but yeah!” Scotty called out to clarify before going back into the fight.
“Will, what was that!?” Quincy questioned in excitement. “Was that void magic?!”
“Yeah, but it’s a spell I haven’t fully mastered yet,” he answered as Haze merged with him, turning him into Chaos Haze. “No Soul Fire, Haze?”
Seeing Laurence flinging a car in an attempt to smash Mayhem into the ground made him a little nervous. “Too much potential for collateral. No big guns?”
“You think I could pull off Mega Cannon here?” he said with a laugh.
“Boyo, Cliff!” Morrigan pointed out with urgency.
As if on cue, Cliff appeared in a puddle of liquid metal and engulfed Will. “Already on it, Morrigan!” This turned Chaos Haze metallic and covered him in spikes. “This looks hairy, Will.”
“I know…” he then glanced over and saw Tudor appear next to Quincy. “You two ready for your first rodeo?”
Tudor looked at the fight, felt his nerves go ice cold, and nodded. “Yeah, we figured something like this would happen. Ready for a full merge, Quincy?”
He swallowed hard. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” Tudor turned into a long rubber tube, coiled around Quincy, and squeezed him, turning him into a shiny, red rubber version of himself.
Laurence had noticed the group getting ready and roared, knocking away his opponents to charge at them, but was knocked back by a bright beam that triggered an explosion that sent him flying back across the road–Lionel looked pretty triumphant, laughing as he walked over. “Told you I’d have your back, Will!”
Will and the others looked at Lionel’s glowing hands, and Will nodded with a proud look on his face. “Mixing fire and ice to make an explosion?! Wow! Shoot, I’ll have to tell Faustus and Mira about that one…” That made Lionel chuckle, feeling proud of himself as he readied more fire and ice in his hands.
Laurence then roared, his voice like nails on a chalkboard, and out from the shadows of the buildings all around them emerged a large group of shadow constructs–they had to have been some of Sebastian’s from right before The Red River City Incident. Mary did a quick count and rushed over to the group with Mayhem and Scotty. “Welp, I think he’s pissed,” she concluded.
“How do you guys want to handle this?” Mayhem inquired as he sharpened his blades on each other.
Will nodded as he brought his fist up, enlarging it with Cliff and Haze’s magic. “Anton, Lionel, make sure Laurence doesn’t get past us..”
“Will do,” Anton replied.
“Loud and clear, Specialist!” Lionel said with a salute. Surprisingly he was down to go on guard duty, which was clearly something Will wanted to keep him out of harm’s way (even if he could take a hit).
Will then cleared his throat. “Scotty, Mary, Mayhem, Shark–deal with the shadow constructs, and help us out when you’re done…”
“Roger that, partner,” Scotty said as he led the three he was tasked with back into the fight.
“Everyone else? It’s time to tango…”
Antonio laughed as he summoned his shotgun. “Alright then! I’ve got your back, Will.”
Morrigan then summoned her swords, with the rubble around her starting to levitate. “Boyo, you’ve got to keep that anger of yours in check,” she chuckled as they started to move. “What will the jury think?”
Will laughed back. “A little late for that, Sam!”
