Retaliation (January 23, 2025)
It was a cold, utterly frigid day in January–that winter had been particularly brutal for Sunset Hill, with temperatures in the single digits. The two houses stayed warm regardless, even if the nights were chilly. Despite the viscous winds and knee deep snow, the hill was utterly beautiful–draped in sheets of sparkly snow with ice hanging from the tall branches of the old and hardy trees. And to sweeten the deal was that the proud, azure sky was on display in all its glory as the sun beamed down on the gelid wonderland. Orion had woken up that morning after sleeping in–nice and cozy, wrapped up in his thick blankets. After giving himself a moment to relax before he headed downstairs, he rose from his bed and pushed his bedding aside. Sleeping in the third dimension of the Cosmos proper was actually quite relaxing all things considered. He had sensed some trouble with his father, but he was sure it was nothing major… until he heard him yell–
“GODDAMNIT!! I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!”
A surge of adrenaline shot through Orion’s veins as he swung open his door at the far end of the hallway and hurried over to see Will’s door wide open and the man himself flipping out–hyperventilating and visibly losing his mind. He even had Haze in his bodysuit form like he was about to go into battle. “Dad–What’s wrong!? Are we under attack?!”
“LOOK!” he snapped, pointing at the window.
Orion walked over to study the apparent situation on the opposite side of the room and was not sure what he was looking for… until he heard a drip and looked up. He could see a trail of water running down the wall from the edge of the ceiling. “Oh… An ice dam?”
“AN ICE DAMN?” he repeated back in a somewhat mocking tone, albeit it was to stress the severity he perceived. “Orion–this is serious!”
“Well just get rid of it then.”
“Boyo!” Sam interrupted as she walked up the stairs. “What’s all the commotion?!”
“An ice dam,” Orion answered, prompting Sam to go inspect the leak.
Will was still losing it, but it looked like he had an idea developing in his head. “You know what? I’ll go take care of it right now!” he declared as he thudded down the stairs.
“WILL–it’s five degrees out there!” Sam protested, trying to stop him as she and Orion hurried after him.
Kyu sat there at the table, looking up from his paperwork and breakfast with a confused look on his face. “Uh, Will? It’s pretty frigid out there…”
“I DON’T CARE,” he said as he put on his winter coat… then realized the obvious, despite his tantrum. “Haze!”
“One set of winter gear coming up!” Haze replied as he took the shape of a set of winter pants, boots, gloves, and a coat with a nice, fluff-lined hood.
Sam grabbed Will’s shoulder, hoping she could talk some sense into him. “Boyo–please! We can call the repair men once it warms up…”
“Sam, Sam–please–let me take care of this…” he waited for a second for her to let go. “Don’t worry, I’ve got my void magic in case I get hurt.” Will then went outside and began looking around, using a heat-based spell from Faustus’ arsenal to clear paths for himself.
“Does he always get like this during winter?” Orion questioned, naturally worried for a wide variety of things.
Sam looked down and brought him towards her. “2020 was a bit bumpy, and our first winter here was like this one–but the ice dam didn’t happen until February… I thought I touched up the flashing though…” she complained with that last comment.
“Well I guess this winter was just that bad…” Kyu said before sipping some more of his coffee. “Jeez, can’t believe he’s still getting worked up over this stuff even after all we’ve been through…”
The spectacle was heard and noticed next door by Antonio, who just so happened to glance out the living room window to see Will searching around for something. He called over Buster and Olivia just as Will slipped and fell on the road. “OOF, I hope that didn’t–oh jeez…” Antonio winced as Will kept slipping before Haze finally adjusted his boots.
“Should we go out and help him?” Olivia wondered.
“What’s he all up in arms about in the first place?” Buster inquired.
Antonio thought about it for a second and banged his thigh. “Damn it! Sam and I were talking about the flashing–I knew we should have done something more about it!”
Buster gave a sympathetic laugh. “We didn’t expect this winter to be that bad…”
Olivia glanced over and noticed Will hauling a folded up ladder across the road he had sourced from their garage. “Wait, what’s he going to do? Is he going to remove the ice himself, like that one year?”
Antonio squinted his eyes, nodded, and went for his coat. “Yeah–he’s got his hammer… Aw jeez… Buster, go help him and make sure he doesn’t fall. We’ll go talk to Sam and the others.”
Buster laughed and snapped his fingers, taking on his true form, which was resistant to the cold. “Sure thing.” Once they were all ready, they stepped outside only to get hit by the biting cold. The frigid air felt rough going down their throats, and the sun bounced off the snow, forcing them to squint. Buster followed the trail Will had blazed as the other two went inside and shook his head. “How’s it going, Will?” he asked with hands on his hips as he stood underneath the long, strong metal ladder–it rattled as Will tried to figure out what to do.
Will groaned at the ice and banged some of it with the teeth-side of the hammer. He was promptly hit in the face with small ice shards, prompting Haze to form some snow goggles over his eyes. “Damn it, forgot I don’t have my ice pick…” He then glanced down at Buster. “Oh hey, Buster… can you hold the ladder?”
“Sure… ooh, cold,” he said as he gripped it. “Guess we should have done something about the flashing?”
“Will!” Trevor said as he walked out of seemingly nowhere. His ghostly form was unaffected by the cold, yet he still wore winter clothing. “If you need some help, you should have just called us–”
“Don’t worry, Trevor, I got this…” Will then quickly realized it was going to take way too long to bang all of the ice off–and he risked banging up the roof too. He sniffled as his snot had hardened, and coughed a little as the cold air hit his throat. “Wait a second–I have magic, ha! Let’s see… ah, I know! Nez Roh!” He snapped his fingers, and as if lifted up by a magical force, the snow and ice floated off of that portion of the roof and fell to the ground with a massive thump… Trevor was in the path of this mass.
“WILL!” he complained, being buried up to his waist in snow.
Will and Haze laughed, with Buster chuckling as he shook his head. “Sorry, Trevor–”
“Hey, wait a second!” Haze interjected. “Aren’t you a ghost?”
“Yes, but it’s still annoying,” Trevor answered as he effortlessly walked over to Buster.
Haze could not help but smile, but then noticed something wrong. “Uh… hold up a second, Will…” he took Will’s hand to look at something, forcing Will to grip the ladder and Buster to focus on keeping it steady. “Look–I see where the melt got in.”
Will could see it too and nodded. “Nez…” he said with a swiping motion, removing any water that had become trapped in the wood. The moisture glowed with the energy of the Undead Plague and flew down to the snow pile with ease. “Hopefully that didn’t spook anyone, heh…”
“What are we going to do about the flashing though?” Buster asked as Will climbed down, focusing his strength with each of Will’s steps down. “Also we should make Valdemaras go through this stuff,” he joked.
Will laughed at that and paused to ponder what he would do next. “Could I…?”
“Could you…” Haze continued, then sensed what he was thinking. “Yeah–try it, Will. Worst case scenario is that he doesn’t show up…”
“Hold up, try what?” Buster asked. “What are you thinking, Will?”
After giving it some more thought and getting pretty chilled as he stomped his feet–crunching the snow as he did, he nodded. “Alright, ahem–Ruk Helx Duk Nez Roh–Mads!”
Stepping though a metal doorway in tactical ENCOM winter gear was Mads, who had a thermos full of hot chocolate. “Top of the morning, everyone,” he said with a yawn. “What do you need, Will?”
“Mads, can you work your magic and fix the flashing?”
Mads took a second to drink some hot chocolate, offering some to the others (who were good to go and shook their heads). He sized up the issue and knew what he had to do. Teleporting his thermos away, he started climbing up the ladder, with the necessary tools and materials having appeared out of nowhere and floated up with him. “Alright, let’s get to work…”
“Uh, Mads?” Will interjected. “Can’t you just snap your fingers and get this done instantly?”
“Don’t worry, Will–I’ve dealt with this before…” he said as he started taking apart the edge of the roof.
“Mads, aren’t you a god?” Trevor questioned, getting a little nervous seeing his house taken apart.
“Yeah, but I'm a little new to this…” Despite his unorthodox method, things were going fine, and he saw exactly what he needed to address as he got out his hammer.
Buster glanced over to Will, who shrugged with a just as confused look on his face. “So this is how you’re going to fix it, Mads? Points for the initiative, but I have to agree with the others here–I’ve seen void magic do some impressive things before.”
Mads sighed as he brought over a piece of plywood. “Honestly I’m starting to think me and Grave should have just let Goolubber step back into the scene… Yeah, Crimson was on our minds, but…” he sighed once more, what he was referencing being lost on the three. “You guys head inside and I’ll work on this–I’ll let you know when things are good to go.”
The three nodded as they watched Mads prepare some shingles and tar, and figured it was time to head in. Will’s cheeks felt quite chilled after all. The wave of heat that hit the three as they stepped inside felt sublime, and Haze reverted back to normal as Will went to sit down on the couch next to Orion. Olivia and Antonio were sitting at the table with Kyu while Sam was busy cleaning up the kitchen counter. They all let Will calm down for a moment as Buster told them what was going on with Mads. Sam was surprised, but accepted the favor regardless–making a note that she would have to find some way to repay him for the kindness as she heard the sound of banging and drills whirring outside.
“Oh yeah, forgot to tell you guys about the other BULLSHIT I woke up to this morning,” Will griped quite loudly.
“What happened, Dad?” Orion inquired, hoping to get to the bottom of all of the issues he was sensing. His family did not realize it, but they were quite loud to his higher dimensional senses. He crossed his legs on the cushion and focused with utmost intent.
“That rat bastard, Laurence Duckenfield, is calling me a monster on social media!” Everyone barring Kyu gasped at this, as he had been snooping on the internet for the past couple of days. “Asshole figured he would take advantage of our timezones, but thankfully everyone is ratio’ing him…”
Kyu cleared his throat. “Will, get a hold of Antares–you know ratios don’t actually slow politicians down…”
“Hold up,” Sam interrupted once more, bringing Will over a bowl of homemade, chocolate ricepuff cereal. It was 10:30 AM and nearly beyond Will’s window for breakfast, but it was better than nothing. “Get some food in you, Boyo.”
“Thanks, Sam,” he said as he took a spoonful, the milk feeling great against his irritated throat.
“How is that stronzo still in power?” Antonio demanded to know as he lightly banged the table. “Especially after all we’ve found out about him?”
“Technically, as they have been suspended–not that that means much,” Kyu quickly added.
Will cleared his throat after swallowing some more cereal. “Yeah–not helped by the fact that the Brits voted for him and Two-Tier-Kenneth…”
“It’s the British we’re talking about, guys,” Kyu pointed out with an annoyed look on his face. “They’ll vote for anyone who says they’ll do something good and not even bat an eye when they try to enact authoritarian laws or switch their prime minister out for someone even worse that wasn’t even voted for.”
Feeling a laugh coming on, Will finished sipping the milk from his bowl. “Haha, yeah–you took the words right out of my mouth, Kyu. What do you expect when your nation isn’t founded on the back of a revolution?”
Trevor sighed, feeling the conversation was starting to get sidetracked. “Well, let’s not throw the British under the bus too hard, Will–Remember, Kenneth Stainthorpe has connections to Audoin Dethbrand after all…”
“True, true… Especially after what Scotty told us…”
“Either way, Will, you should do something about this,” Olivia insisted as she nervously tapped her latter three fingers on the table. “He’s openly slandering and threatening a federal agent–and I’m certain Antares is already on this…”
Will sighed as he took his bowl to the sink and placed it in. “Yeah, no point in sitting around complaining about it…” Will snapped his fingers, causing Mads to snap his fingers outside and teleport Will’s communicator into his hand. He flipped it open and was about to dial the number, but realized he could make things a lot easier with a little magic. “You know what? I’ll go visit him right now…” He then went to the front door and knocked on it. “Nez.” The door took on a metallic, eldritch feel, and he stepped into a lobby he knew had most of his commanding officers.
Things went silent for a couple of minutes after the door shut as everyone waited patiently with occasional small talk, but it did not vanish which made Orion a bit more concerned. “So he’s been practicing teleporting to Camelot?”
“Yup,” Kyu answered with a chuckle as he stood up to stretch. “Antares’ orders.”
Just then the door opened up, vanishing once Will was inside the house. “He’s over at M.A.I.G.,” Will said in a semi-hushed, annoyed voice.
“On the bright side we got to say hi to General Lundberg and Senator Ripper!” Haze added, trying to keep things lighthearted. Will then opened up a new door with the backdoor and stepped into the War Room at M.A.I.G. Headquarters, the void door vanishing behind him this time.
