“You know what?” Antares put in. “I’d like a meeting with Ludwig and Rostislav, posthaste…”
“Absolutely, Lt. Colonel,” Barry replied. “I’ll talk to Captain Leichenberg as soon as I get back.” Barry did not notice it, but Will was trying to sink into his chair.
“Sit up straight, Private Ford,” Dryden instructed. “This is a debriefing after all.”
“Yes sir…” he answered as he got back up.
“Well if you’ll handle that situation, Antares, let’s finally get to what just happened today,” Aalders resumed. “First up, ANTIMagic Haze…”
“I vote that Will takes care of him going forward,” said Bran. “No offense, Aalders, but we do NOT want him back…”
Haze stuck Will’s hand up to speak. “Oh come on, Bran, M.A.I.G. HQ was a lot of fun,” he jokingly complained… This warranted a growl from Bran.
Aalders nodded, then scratched his beard. “I see… Do you promise to behave yourself, Haze? And can you keep William safe?”
“Yes and yes, sir!”
Kyu leaned forward a little and gave Haze a skeptical look. “You’re being awfully cooperative given your track record…”
Haze moved Will’s hand back and forth like he was acknowledging the elephant in the room. “Well, I mean, Will is Ryota’s friend, and I trust him…”
Milan had been taking notes the entire time and looked up from them for a second. “Well, if that’s the case–Will, you might want to pick a more… modest form for Haze.” The elderly man next to him nodded in agreement.
Will glanced down at himself. “Well… um… I don’t know how to…”
“Hold on, I got you,” Haze said with confidence. He then shifted into a bodysuit with red flame patterns that invoked the idea of blood or a living suit. It was mostly black with the shoulders being red, and the patterns being primarily on the limbs.
Standing up to get a good look at himself, Will was impressed and smiled. “Not bad… Sam, am I back to normal?”
She looked up at his head, which appeared back to normal… “Um… Take your head off for a second.” He did as he was told, with Sam nodding. “Alright, you're good, Boyo.”
Aalders clapped. “Well now that we have that settled, welcome to the Brigade, Haze. And speaking of new members, Samantha, a warm welcome to you too…” This warranted a round of light applause. “Now I don’t mind you using nicknames off duty, but on duty I would like you to refer to your fellow Ligers by rank.”
“I’ll do my best, General,” she replied.
Something then crossed Aalders’ mind about Sam that he needed to settle right then and there. “Now, Sam, I noticed your hair and eyes have changed back to what your record says… What is the difference between you and your true self in this case?”
“Yes, that–brown is me and purple is Morrigan.”
Aalders nodded as shuffled through some of his papers. “Do you have any questions at the moment, Sam? You will be receiving documentation about The Liger Brigade that should answer any questions you have, but is there anything you want me to answer right now?”
She thought about it for a second, but the excitement from earlier was leaving her mind a bit scrambled. “Oh, wait…” Sam said as she reached into her pocket and got out her badge. “The badges–isn’t that like a law enforcement thing?”
“Ah yes, that–those were grandfathered in as a way for special agents to identify themselves with any law enforcement, military, or government officials. You and Will are both special agents in that regard.”
“Oh alright. Thank you, General.”
“Aalders…” Will interjected with a moan. “We really are a part of the military now, aren’t we?”
“Afraid so, Will. Don’t worry, we still have full autonomy and Lundberg gave us a clause that allows us to break away from the military if need be.”
With a final sigh, Will accepted the reality of the situation. “Alright, fair enough.”
“Speaking of Lundberg, Will–he wants to hold a banquet at the Witchaven firehall so he can finally give you your awards. Will you be attending?”
“Yeah, sure…” he then noticed Aalders was holding out his hands in a way that indicated a bit of skepticism. “Haha, absolutely this time, because Blood told me to… plus I tried to go back to The Unlight and he literally escorted me back to Earth.” This made everyone laugh.
Aalders then shifted to another paper in his pile. “Sebastian has been acting strangely lately, but before we get into that, Milan, I believe you wanted to address Haze?”
“I’ll make it quick,” he answered with a chuckle. “Barry, do you think that’s the missing symbiont-class from the Homunculus Project?”
Barry studied Haze for a second and nodded. “Without a shadow of a doubt.”
Milan then jotted something down and tapped his notebook with a satisfied look on his face. “Well that finally solves that mystery.”
Bran looked rather annoyed as he rested his head on his hand. “Wait, Milan, why didn’t you just take a look at Haze for yourself then?”
He laughed to himself thinking back on it. “Sorry about that, Bran–I’ve been a bit busy as of late…”
“OH MY GOD!” Bran complained as he looked at the ceiling, warranting subtle chuckles and laughter from the others.
Aalders cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention, as what he had to discuss next was very important. “Now, about Sebastian and his odd behaviour… It’s not looking good, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it–he may be trying to start the apocalypse to achieve his vision of a third reich…” Will and Sam both looked very concerned, and it was a bit haunting for the General. “Sebastian seems to have kicked Karnage, or Ultinn Lacksus as he is now called, to the curve and is trying to reshape the world in his image, starting with the criminal elements. I’m sure you’ve been informed about the oddities surrounding Sky Fortress Dorado, Will?” He nodded. “Conquest, would you like to elaborate?”
“Thank you, General Aalders,” the elderly man said in a strong, yet somewhat raspy voice as he made his way to the podium, using his cane to maintain a steady pace. “William, Samantha, it is an honor to meet both of you. I am Conquest, the White Horseman, and I wish that you didn’t have to see me in such a sorry state of affairs. Sebastian stole my power, originally for his World War III plot, but it seems I may have rubbed off on him…” There was a smug glee in his voice that indicated he was enjoying Sebastian’s current turmoil. “He was arrogant enough to bite the fruit of the tree of knowledge and not think he would incur the consequences. Now he wants to trigger the apocalypse in the hopes it will lead to his new world order. This will not be the outcome, rather it will be the revelation of the eldritch truth to humanity. We can not let that happen, as ignorance is one of the few things keeping man safe from the dangers that lie beyond the veil, dangers you two have no doubt encountered. Zasiel, Morrigan–will you help me avert the apocalypse?”
“Absolutely,” Will said without hesitation.
“Me too,” Sam added.
“Thank you, both of you. It fills me with confidence to know that not every human is a Faustian fool like Sebastian is…” Conquest sighed, causing the room to fill with a subtle dread. “Of course, our goal may turn into managing the apocalypse, as The Pale Horseman is stirring because Famine, War, and I have been roused from our slumber… Still, I look forward to working with all of you. In the past I would have seen myself as above such requests, but now is not the time for our pride and egos to get in the way. General Aalders?” Conquest then went to sit down back in his seat.
“Thank you, Conquest. And all of you are welcome to consult with him if need be. Things are going to be getting pretty hectic going forward, given what we’ve been noticing. I feel we’ve stepped over the precipice into the abyss, so there’s no going back at this point…”
There was a moment’s pause to take it all in, as the implications of what Aalders and Conquest had said had a great deal of weight to everyone in the room. It was enough to make anyone lose sleep at night. What was more concerning? The fact that Sebastian was still running around plotting his schemes, or the fact that he had changed his convictions? And the looming threat of the apocalypse happening regardless of whatever they did was certainly not helping. Breaking the tension, however, was a man entering the briefing room. He wore a black tuxedo, had red eyes, and white hair… but it seemed like they were not his true appearance. He took a seat in one of the chairs off to the side and noticed everyone was looking at him weirdly.
“What’s the matter?” Waramunt asked… Then it occurred to him what was wrong. “Oops, sorry about that…” He then produced a card out of nowhere and placed it back into his deck, causing his appearance to revert back to someone they were all very familiar with. “Hello everyone–I’m back from my little adventure,” said Valentin.
“Valentin!?” Antares exclaimed, with everyone following his suit. “Just where the hell have you been this past month?”
He started to speak, then stopped. “It’s a long story…”
“Uncle Valentin!” Bethany greeted, indicating she wanted a hug.
“Bethany, good to see you again after so long…” Valentin replied as he got up and hugged her. “Also hold up–I’m your Uncle now?” he asked with a laugh.
“Of course you are! I’ve got no other immediate family at the moment–Sorry, Antares, but you and Olivia don’t count since you’re my distant relatives…”
“Well shoot,” Antares replied with a smile.
Valentin chuckled, then noticed something different about Bethany. “Have you grown since I last saw you? And is that makeup you're wearing?”
Bethany smiled and nodded her head side to side. “Oh, well, Olivia and her friends said I should try on a little lipstick and eyeliner and it just stuck. I went with a subtle pink for the lipstick as I didn’t want to be too flashy.”
“You look quite beautiful, Bethany, and my mother and grandmother would have utterly adored you… Oh, and you’ll have an Aunt soon enough.”
Amidst the compliments that made her feel warm inside, she was caught off guard as her curiosity flared into overdrive. “Wait, what do you mean by that?”
“Well I’m engaged to Lia Ascher of the Blades of Dunja…” He was cut off from another hug by Bethany.
“Congrats, Valentin! When do I get to meet her?” It was clear that she was very excited.
“Congratulations from us too, Valentin,” Aalders added. “Pardon my saying amidst the good news, but where were you this past month?”
Dryden gave a mischievous laugh that suggested he knew the outcome of Valentin’s quest all along. “A perilous journey to the past to try and undo his misfortune…” This caused everyone to look at Valentin weirdly again.
“Another one!?” Antares cried. “Valentin, just what were you thinking?”
In that moment a wave of realization that had been held back for so long washed over Valentin. He wanted to get mad, but there was no anger left as he had played his part in the grand scheme of the Cosmos… He put an elbow on his leg and rested his head in his hand for a moment and sighed. Sitting up, he began shuffling his hex deck to alleviate his anxiety. “Yes, I went back in time to try and fix everything. Helping Lia get away from The Eternal Order, getting Buster safely to Earth, trying and failing to rescue Odo from Karnage… I wanted to fix everything, but only ended up making sure we all met here today…”
Sam got up and went over to him with a look of regret on her face. “Waramunt?”
He stood up and indicated for her to come in for a hug. “It’s okay, Morrigan, I forgive you…” Valentin said as she hugged him. There was no denying that his inner father was shining through in that moment.
“I didn’t listen to you back then and then slammed you around like a madman… I’m so sorry…”
Valentin then patted her on the shoulder. “Fair enough, but if you had changed any of your actions we probably wouldn’t be here today. It’s in the past now, so all we can do is look back on it and learn from it.”
Sam thought about that fact and smiled. “You’ve got a point…”
“And Morrigan, about The Tyrant God…”
“Yeah, I found out about that…”
“While I was being irreverent back in September–my sincerest apologies, Zasiel–he is fully on our side, and that manifestation we dealt with back in The Tyrant War was not the true Tyrant God.”
The embarrassment pressing down on Sam was immense, but she held it together. “Yeah… also it’s kind of awkward given that I was flipping out over that stuff when I knew Boyo here was a fragment of The Tyrant God this entire time…”
“So does that make me a god then?” Will inquired in ernest.
Valentin chuckled. “No and yes, but mostly no.” He then took a breath and crossed his arms like a disappointed parent. “Will, I know about what happened with Valerie…”
“Oh, you do…?”
“Everything, including how you were captured and held captive by her.”
Will had the most painful smile on his face as tried to stop himself from laughing, air snorting out his nose as he sunk into his chair. “Sh-shoot… I gu-guess they would have to-told you…”
Valentin and the others were also trying not to laugh. “Look, Will…” He could barely control himself. “Look, you nearly got done in by me on numerous occasions–you really need to not walk into obvious traps…” and then he gave in and started laughing. The whole room erupted into laughter, as it was a nice reprieve from the grim nature of what they had been discussing. “Will… look, be more careful next time. You’re lucky Valerie is an utter sweetheart.”
Milan then stepped over and leaned on the table. “Well I think the Future Squad mission lowered his guard, so we can’t fault him too much. Speaking of going to the past–promise you won’t do that again?”
“I promise, Milan,” he agreed. “That was… that was something else…”
“And I don’t think Ealdhelm and Zal-Rint are going to let Schwarzes and Beorhtric do another future squad mission ever again,” Will clarified.
“Nope–that’s a definite,” Barry confirmed.
Milan then glanced to his side for a second, then realized something important. “Oh, Valentin… So about Perkele…”
“Pardon?” he questioned.
“Looks like the Perkele hex worked, Uncle Valentin,” Bethany answered. “He’s been rolling around with Sebastian for the past month and even showed his face in the battle earlier.”
Valentin then got out his old deck and looked through it. “Huh, I wonder why that card never returned… oh boy…”
