Adriana was swiftly and skillfully running through multiple battles, carrying The Annihilator with its barrels spinning, ready to fire just in case a shadow construct decided to pick a fight with her. Siegeberht had run off to get in on the action and was needed back at the wall for his expertise in tactics, not running out into battle guns ablazing. Tressacht was surprised by this given that his brother was usually the level-headed one, but in the same breath Siegeberht’s affinity was fire. A battalion of Benedictus’ soldiers were providing support to a group of Adelheid’s knights, so she darted over with a burst of speed from her magic and unleashed her gun’s fury on the shadow constructs that were pinning them. This brief aside allowed Adriana to catch a glimpse of Siegeberht and she hurried over to him as fast as she could.
Siegeberht was having too much fun blasting away an entire legion of shadow golems with a colossal gun that might as well have been some kind of cannon. The weapon was jet black metal with red accents and glowing orange vents, firing explosive fireball-esque bullets from a slender, ten foot long barrel. The mighty gun thundered and shook as it fired each shot, and any construct or golem stood no chance as they were blown to smithereens when the projectiles exploded on contact. And Siegeberht was laughing all the way, like a schoolboy who had been bored to death and was finally letting loose all of his pent up energy at recess.
Taking a second to reload his ammunition, Siegberht noticed Rick Dirrt way off in the distance running away like a coward. Siegeberht grinned as he pressed a button near the trigger that caused his gun to whirr like it was charging up something great. “HEY, RICK, DON’T FORGET YOUR PARTING GIFT!” he shouted as he angled the barrel just right. Adriana braced herself as a titanic explosion rang out and a great fireball arced high in the air before finally touching down directly above Rick. The ensuing explosion was immense and it sent the pathetic monstrosity flying far from the epicenter of the fighting. “OH YEAH, IN THE COCK, HA!”
Adriana just stared at him with an incredulous look and subtly shook her head. “Ugh, men! Okay, the odds that you actually hit him in the groin are slim to none, Senot-Drow…”
Siegeberht froze for a second with a slight deer-in-the-headlights look on his face. “How… how do you know that?”
“You think I don’t know an Unreal God when I see one?” Adriana asked with a hand on her hip as she leaned on her gun.
“But I thought you left before my brothers and I made our debut on the battlefield…”
“And you also think I haven’t been talking to Mads?”
“Pardon me, Captain Hawthorne!” an Iron City soldier interjected as he ran up. “The west ridge is getting hammered by golems. Is there any aerial support heading that way?”
“Smets and Krakowski were leading a run towards that direction and should be crossing over as we speak.”
“Very good, Ma’am!” the soldier replied with a salute, followed by him returning to his squad.
“So how did you get that information, Adriana?” Siegeberht inquired as he casually tossed a howling fireball into a group of approaching, juggernaut-class constructs that went off with an explosion that slightly shook the ground.
“Again, Mads.”
“You were able to get him to tell you?”
Adriana brushed off her uniform with a slightly smug grin on her face. “He may be an eleventh dimensional Bizarre God, but I am still his commanding officer at the end of the day. In all fairness, I am keeping this between me and him, or at least until you and Thorogor return to your time.”
The two then felt the ground shake, with Siegeberht looking up to see what it was. Not too far away from them was an at least fifty meter tall giant made of stone, metal, and glowing, green energy. Glancing over to the opposite side, he saw a similar sized entity in the likeness of Karnage, black and red, that made cacophonous grinding noises as gears and cogs strained to allow the lumbering monster to move forward. “Well I’d dare say the shadow titans are here…”
“Excuse me, WHAT?!” Adriana exclaimed as her panic increased the more the two combatants got closer to each other.
“An amalgamation of thousands of constructs Karnage came up with, evidently stolen from plans Dunja had scrapped…”
“I know what they are, damn it! I mean…” Seeing The Colossus wind up a punch, Adriana dropped what she was saying and quickly signaled for everyone in her vicinity to follow her as she opened up an eerie portal back to the wall. “EVERYONE FOLLOW ME BACK TO THE WALL, NOW!”
“Impressive, Adriana, as I had no idea you had been looking into Mage Class skills and techniques…” Siegeberht started to say before another tremor interrupted him.
“Save it for when we’re not in trampling range!” she ordered as she grabbed him by the arm and heaved him into the portal.
The Colossus of Old did not like what he was looking at in the shadow titan before him. When he had been called in to help, he had not expected Karnage to go above and beyond like he had. At the same time they were all dealing with The Behemoth God, so it was not too surprising at the end of the day. The Colossus let loose his mighty punch and the shadow titan was sent reeling, tumbling to the ground and crushing a great deal of Karnage’s army. The head of The Colossus then split open to reveal a massive crystal that focused a destructive beam of energy and fired it right at the shadow titan as it was getting up. It utterly destroyed the titan, leaving nothing more than a smoldering heap of disintegrating shadow construct remains. Regaining his bearings, The Colossus thundered towards the other titan that had accompanied the first one and knocked its head clean off, blowing a hole right through a third titan.
A fourth and fifth titan were not too far behind, but these two were taken out by the impact of a stadium-sized asteroid. The resulting inferno was directed towards Karnage (even if it would not actually hurt him) by a dark angel in black and red armor. The Colossus was utterly impressed as he took the moment to catch his breath. “Well done, Valentina!”
“Thank you, Colossus…” she said as she also tried to catch her breath. “And if it boils down to it, I’ll throw a planet-killer at them…”
“I trust your presence here means that Blood-Wraith is on his way?”
She nodded as she stretched her back, her armor grinding up against itself. “Yes, ideally…”
“WAIT, he is!?” Schwarzes interrupted as he flew up to them. “This is great news, how long will it take!?”
Valentina looked troubled, as she was not sure how to answer him. “I’m… I’m not sure, as his majesty gave the signal for me to bring the troops into the battle. I only have a vague sense of what’s going on in The Ennead.”
The Colossus was about to give his thoughts on the matter, but then he noticed something that chilled his blood. There were ten new titans approaching and they all looked ready to fight. “BLAST! Schwarzes, head to the wall and have all of the ground troops recalled to protect the city. Then message the aerial units to double their efforts to take out the remaining standard constructs…”
“You’re not going to fight them all by yourself, are you!?” Schwarzes objected.
“I don’t plan to…” The head of The Colossus opened up again and the crystal vibrated, giving off a foghorn-like noise that was clearly signaling to those far off. “Taffy and Volcano will have to back me up on this one.”
“Wait, won’t that leave the forest and Shadowland wide open?” Valentina questioned, incredibly worried by the encroaching titans.
“The Behemoth God has always had notorious tunnel vision for his goals. He won’t attack the forest, Shadowland, or the guild until he’s done here. Now go, Schwarzes. Valentina, stay here and back me up until my brothers arrive!”
“Yes sir!” the two dark angels said in unison, with Schwarzes heading to the wall.
The Colossus nearly jumped out of his stone when he saw ten more titans behind the first ten and let out an exasperated sigh. “Looks like it is going to be one of those days…”
As Schwarzes flew over the battlefield, he snapped his fingers and summoned a whistle that glowed with starlight and blew it as hard as he could. This sent out a message to everyone to fall back to the walls and defend them. As soldiers and knights began to retreat, Schwarzes saw two truly colossal machines beyond comprehension enter The Unlight, each immense step they took shaking the land. They were The Vermilion King’s Death Engines, Cyrillus and Orrgun, making their way to help The Colossus of Old. It filled Schwarzes with a feeling of triumph until he saw how many shadow titans they were going to fight. By now there had to be at least thirty and this sent him into a panic.
Schwarzes' guild mates either made their way inside the wall or climbed up to the top, but Morrigan was having trouble. She appeared to have injured herself, and it was clear she was exhausted and could not make proper use of her gravity magic. Thankfully Schwarzes swooped in and picked her up. “Don’t worry, mom, I got you!”
Morrigan was a bit out of it from fatigue, but just barely heard Schwarzes refer to her as his mother. That was one of the strangest things she had heard all day and for some reason it felt right, like she had been reunited with a long lost son she never had… or did she? “WHOA… ow!” she exclaimed as she was dropped on the metal floor. “Ow…” Morrigan then propped herself up on the parapet with help from Torunn. “Schwarzes, what’s going on… HOLY SHIT!” She had spotted the battle with the shadow titans and nearly fell over from panic.
Dunja banged the parapet with her hands, teeth gritted in anger. “DAMN IT, THOSE WERE MY IDEA AND I SCRAPPED THEM FOR A REASON!” It was hard to tell if Dunja’s anger stemmed from duress or her pride being hurt.
“Your majesty, you’re going to have to be clearer about these matters,” David replied.
“Shadow titans,” she grunted. “I came up with them when I was at the peak of my delusions with Milosh and planned to create one as a means of intimidating everyone.”
“And of course that rat bastard is going to make an army of them if we don’t stop him!” Wulfric pointed out. He tried to look like he was ready to go, but in reality he was exhausted.
“Boy, Karnage is twelfth dimensional and we’re going to need a miracle at this rate!” Benedictus reminded him.
“Schwarzes, what is The Colossus planning to do about this?” Englehart questioned.
“He and his brothers are going to hold them off until Blood gets here, who is on his way as we speak!” There was a silent optimism spreading amongst the others, and it was clear as day on their faces. “General Drazhan, The Colossus needs you to have all aerial units focus on taking out the rest of the constructs while the big guys handle the titans.”
“Already on it, my boy!” the general answered as hurried over to the intel officers.
“If Colossus is calling in his brothers, then we should all be concerned,” The Hunger stated as he scoped out the situation with a pair of ornate binoculars. “He’s only done that for such battles a handful of times, and unfortunately the original War Machine isn’t exactly available at the moment…”
“Oh boy, not good, not good, not good at all!” The Fear panicked as he ran around in circles, stopped by Losian.
“Let’s not lose our heads just yet, lad,” the god said as he ruffled Fear’s hair. “Now, Benedictus, sit back and watch a master at work.”
Benedictus nodded and crossed his arms. “Looks like it’s up to The Colossus now…”
High in the sky flew the B-17 bomber, ‘The Guns of Glory,’ and Shaye and Ahhotep were receiving orders over their headsets. Shaye flicked a couple of switches on the instrument board, then addressed the crew of the plane. “Alright, men, we’re going in all guns blazing. Shoot any construct or Eternal Church cultists on sight and leave no survivors. I want all turrets firing and no cooling down until Karnage is six feet under… Ready, honey?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be, dear,” Ahhotep reassured as she snapped her fingers, causing a magical swarm of locusts to fly with the plane beside it.
“Thank God and Jesus for the central heating upgrades,” Shaye remarked as he began flipping more switches, preparing the plane for drastic maneuvers. “Need I recount the horror stories of my fellow pilots getting frostbite at these heights?”
“Don’t worry, my magic will fix anyone’s frozen fingers in a heartbeat…”
“Jeez, I’d rather deal with that than this godforsaken war…” Shaye then turned a nob to the right channel. “Tomek, how are things on your end?”
“I just got the orders, Shaye,” the two heard over their headsets. “Hey, who’s this kid following me? No idea who he is, but he’s saved my hide several times already…”
Shaye quietly chuckled. “What’s he look like?”
“Err, a winged dog?”
Shaye and Ahhotep laughed. “That’s Ludwig Leichenberg, or ULTRAMagic Lance. He’s from your timeline and a big fan of yours!” he answered.
“Oh, well ain’t that the strangest thing you ever did see… Glad to have him with me, he certainly knows how to deal with those verdammt flying constructs…”
Shaye cleared his throat as the plane started to descend, the roar of guns beginning to ramp up. “Tomek, what’s Dreadnaught’s status? Is he anywhere close yet?”
“I’m not sure… Scheiße!!” There was a moment where Tomek went quiet, but he quickly resumed his communications. “Tut mir leid, one of the constructs caught me by surprise. Last time he checked in was when he was entering the Warp Corridor, so your guess is as good as mine…”
“Roger that,” Shaye said with slight defeat in his voice. “Stay frosty and don’t let those flying constructs gang up on you, over and out.”
“Looks like we’ll have to hold on until he gets here and hope for the best,” Ahhotep conceded. “May the gods bless his timely arrival…”
“Well we better count our blessings, because we’re going in!” Shaye declared as the plane reached the proper altitude so that the turrets could unleash their full fury upon Karnage’s army.
The fleet of fighters, bombers, arcane machines, and dragon-kind went all out on the battlefield, making sure not a single construct was left standing. Very few of their allied armies were still out there, and the ones that witnessed the spectacle saw construct after construct obliterated by a hail of gun fire, missiles, bombs, and magic. Some of the planes even attempted to get in a few potshots at the shadow titans, but this was of little help to Valentina, The Colossus, Cyrillus, and Orrgun. Those pilots were also quickly ordered to return to their mission, lest they get caught in the crossfire. Shaye would have been lying if he said he did not admire the tenacity, but knew all too well that that attitude would easily get one killed. He was not fond of the odds at the moment, but they needed to hold out until Blood-Wraith and Dreadnaught got there, as they were their only hope…
