Blood-Wraith and Morrigan were almost at the Royal Archive, a grand structure amongst the majestic castles and noble buildings of the distant past. It was one of the great achievements of the ancient Descendants and held many treasures of the Epoch and Epoch-Transition phase. Its architecture was surprisingly modern, relatively speaking. While looking old in The Iron City, it would not look out of place amongst the day-to-day life of the current denizens. Karnage’s presence was not welcome, looking fairly smug as he emerged from the entrance holding a strange, glowing orb in a metal frame. He was quite happy with himself as everything was seemingly going according to plan. Seeing Morrigan approaching, accompanied by Blood-Wraith, was not something he had planned for, however.
“Oh, it’s you again…” Karnage groaned as he feigned disinterest whilst pretending to marvel at the Azoth Core. Notably he had dropped any notion of maintaining a disguise, with the proper form of his red armor on full display.
“YOU. PIECE. OF. SHIT!” Morrigan roared as she charged forward with her sword ready. “WE ARE THROUGH!”
“I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY THE SAME THING!” Karnage shot back as he blocked her attack with one of his bastard swords.
“YOU NEVER LOVED ME!?”
“And you’re just catching on now!?” Karnage mocked as he flung her back with a kick. “Blood-Wraith Raynot, bold of you to come here all by yourself.”
“Don’t bother with any theatrics, Karnage,” he stated in a serious, unfaltering tone. “I have a pretty good idea what you want with me, and you’re not going to get it.”
Karnage shook his head with a smug smile. “You’re a foolish boy to think that I won’t get something when I want it…” He then got out the Lich’s dagger and shoved it into the Azoth Core. The core trembled violently like it was going to explode as red lightning arced from it like a plasma coil, only for him to pull out a gnarled, black dagger pulsing with red energy. “I was able to acquire the Abhorrent Render quite easily now.”
“Yes, but we’re not at where you need to use it, are we?”
“Astute, Sir Raynot. Might I ask if you pulled another of my rank out from under me, aside from Christina, Steve, Davis, and Morrigan?”
Blood-Wraith laughed and spat on the ground as Morrigan rejoined him. “Nah, but I did receive a tip from The Dream God. I know the truth now, that your power courses through me…”
“Oh, do you now?” Karnage inquired as he sheathed the dagger for the time being and tossed the Azoth Core aside like it was trash. “I suppose I should give you some credit, as that Audoan Knight wasn’t particularly bright. In fact I believe he was one of the first to harass Audoin into my clutches and even got exposed on that ridiculous internet nonsense. You and The Dark Divers Guild actually did me a favor in thinning the ranks of inferior subordinates.”
“Don’t worry, Morrigan, you’re not the first,” Blood-Wraith said to comfort her, then returned his attention to Karnage. “I don’t remember that time too well, which bites as I miss hanging out with Scotty and Zara. What I do remember is that we stopped an aspect of your machinations, and I’ll continue that fight now.” He then looked at Voidborne and thought for a second. “Not with this, though…” Blood-Wraith then held Voidborne like a javelin and chucked it as hard as he could into the horizon. “GO, VOIDEBORNE! FIND MIND-WRAITH AND AAVA!”
“Ho ho, going to fight me with your bare hands, are we?” Karnage taunted with a mocking clap.
“No, I am going to fight you with your own power…” Blood-Wraith focused and was enveloped in armor made of black metal, filled with red flames. Appearing in his hands was a claymore made of molten metal and shield hewn from volcanic rock. The armor invoked a draconic knight who had emerged from the darkness to make things right. “Crimson Man - Promise.”
“Well now, quite impressive for a power that you stole from me,” Karnage complimented in a condescending tone. “Your attempt to fight against fate is futile, but I suppose I can indulge your foolishness,” he said as he drew his other bastard sword.
“Blood, what do you think you’re doing?” Morrigan questioned as she readied her sword.
She could not see it, but he was smiling underneath his helm. “Keeping one of my promises to Leif.”
The clash of swords took off with a running attack from Blood-Wraith, and a follow up by Morrigan. Karnage may not have been expecting Morrigan to be present, but he could adapt regardless. And whereas normally Karnage would spare himself of contending with such rabble by means of dirty tactics, something about the bout encouraged him to face Blood-Wraith head on. Karnage could not vanquish him as he was important to the plan, but something about crushing his spirits to truly express how hopeless things were for him ignited the fire in his vile blood. Morrigan’s attempts to get revenge on him were of no concern, as he could easily eliminate her if need be.
Despite Karnage abstaining from his usual cheater’s playbook, his fighting style was still aggressive and he might as well have been playing dirty. His tempo was that of destruction and overwhelming his opponent, which Blood-Wraith and Morrigan were ill-prepared for. Bashing and shoving were par for the course, and Karnage further demonstrated he could fight smart by using the tactics of his opponents against them. Blood-Wraith normally went for his style of aggression that focused on besting his opponent with grit and endurance, but this was slightly tricky to balance with Morrigan’s style. She was one for wild, extravagant attacks that went all out, but Blood-Wraith was able to get the hang of them.
Morrigan was quickly growing angrier and angrier as she fought, making it clear she wanted to kill Karnage. It was completely understandable after all of the years of trickery and manipulation. She felt a burning bile in chest as she screamed with each sword slash. Daemonsong was being pushed to its limits with each crash against Karnage’s blades, but the blade held strong. Blood-Wraith, using a technique he had learned from Master Vilho, managed to get one of Karnage’s blades out of his hand and began swinging it around like a mace. He tried several times to bash Karnage in the head, only for him to shoulder-bash Blood-Wraith and reclaim his sword.
After a particularly fierce sword clash that sent the three reeling back across the plaza, Blood-Wraith cracked his neck. “By the Source, he’s no joke…”
“Damn it!” Morrigan cursed, starting to shake a little from exhaustion.
“HA, tired, Morrigan?” Karnage jeered. “Maybe if you actually focused on being a warrior instead of those trivial clout pursuits on that stupid computer of yours, you could actually keep up with the cream of the crop…” A large rock whizzed past his head with him moving out of the way, an attempt by Morrigan to get him to shut up. “The Internet and computers are going to be one of the first things to go when I ascend to my throne. Oh, and maybe while I’m at it I’ll make merely speaking punishable by death! And it will all be framed as protecting children and the vulnerable…”
“I’ll never understand you irreverent, tyrannical types…” Blood-Wraith rebuked with a scoff.
“YOU DON’T GET IT?” Karnage laughed in his face, feeling like he was wasting his time, but would explain his perspective to the boy. “Whelps like you will never cease to amaze me with your naivete,” he said, throwing his hands up. “Alright, let me make it crystal clear to someone such as you who is insistent on doing things the goody-twoshoes way. Man is dumb and foolish, having a nauseating obsession with being told what to do. Eventually I grew tired of it, feeling like I wanted to rip my head off each day I saw some idiot leader emerge to lead his people into the glorious future, to claim the galaxy for mankind by birthright, or whatever nonsense they were prattling on about that day. And after THE UMPTEENTH MORON TO FAIL AT BUILDING AN EMPIRE, I put my fist down and declared I would show everyone how it’s done! The weak shall be purged and subjugated, and the strong will go on to rule and live as they see fit!”
“You make me sick,” Blood-Wraith condemned.
“I could say the same about people like you, Sir Raynot. You’re so obsessed with saving everyone that you consistently fail to realize that very few people are actually worth saving. They should be left behind and replaced, unworthy to be even a foot soldier in my grand plan for the Cosmos! Honestly, you said it yourself that you wouldn’t save Rick Dirrt if it boiled down to it, so what puts you in any position to criticize me? Deep down you know it too, that not everyone is worth sticking your neck out for!”
Morrigan felt her head go light as she wobbled away from the battle, falling to her knees and vomiting on the plaza stone. Just who had she been spending her time with all those years prior?! “YOU MONSTER!” she yelled at Karnage.
“Don’t even bother, my dear, as I’ve heard it before and will hear it again,” Karnage said in an arrogant, dismissive tone with a hand on his hip. “Quite frankly I don’t care, and never did. Call me whatever you want, that won’t stop my conquest of the Cosmos, Threrth’s Cosmos, and then maybe the Outer Void while I’m at it.”
Blood-Wraith went to help Morrigan stand up and get her steady. “If that’s how it’s going to be… Well, Karnage, you can call me a fool all you want, as I’ve also heard it before and will hear it again. I’ve said what I’ve said to Rick, but I will not snuff out his life. As long as people like you are around, I’ll also be around to stand up against you and be there for those in need. Man may be ignorant, but they need someone to guide them, not erase them. That’s the difference between you and me.”
Karnage shook his head, as deep down he had to respect that stoicism. It made Blood-Wraith a worthy opponent in his eyes, someone whose defeat would make his rule all the more meaningful. And even if he did not succeed that day, there was a portion of him in the boy which meant his vision would persist no matter what. “Then how about you put that mettle to the test and prove you mean what you mean.” He then took the form of a sinister-looking dragon and began to fly off. “Let’s pick this back up at The Temple of The Lost! I’m certain a good friend of yours is dying to see you!”
Blood-Wraith gritted his teeth and threw off his helm, knowing Karnage was referring to Odo. “I’LL BE THERE, KARNAGE! YOU’RE GOING TO PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID!!” He then noticed Volf flying off in a fireball of static and distortion.
“Blood, my boy, are you alright?!” David called out as he and the others came running up to the plaza. They looked a bit roughed up, but no worse for wear.
“We need to get moving, now.” His face was a mix of burning fire and metal that caused his voice to sound like crackling flames, so he went to put his helm back on. “I know what Karnage wants, there’s no getting around it.”
“Then we should go rally the guild posthaste!” David asserted. “This is no time for games, Blood-Wraith.”
“No…”
“What do you mean no?! Have you lost your mind, boy?!”
“We have to face Karnage now.”
Aureolus stepped forward with a look of grave concern in his eyes. “Blood, don’t do this. We’re walking straight into a trap and… I don’t want to see you…”
“Die?” Blood-Wraith knew it was going to be difficult for the others. “Look, Aureolus, I know we’re up against monumental odds, but we can’t let Karnage get away, not now. And if there’s even a slim chance we can stop him and save Odo, we have to take it.”
“Don’t do this, Blood. The Guild has enough strength to stop Karnage and then some.”
“But time is not on our side, Aureolus…”
“I must agree with Aureolus, Sir Raynot,” The Golem said as he stepped up. “On King Englehart’s Orders I hereby place you under arrest. We shall head back to the city and regroup.” He sounded quite serious, and looked ready to respond to any of Blood-Wraith’s antics.
“You and what army?” An ambient force could be sensed rousing in Blood-Wraith, no doubt it was him preparing a curse.
“You wouldn’t dare…”
“Try me.”
Tressacht stepped forward and placed his hand on The Golem’s shoulder. “There’s no point in trying to stop him if he’s set his mind to it, as destiny is calling him.”
The Golem began to rumble, growing quite annoyed. “And what would you have to say about such matters, interloper?” he snapped as he took his shoulder away.
“As they say, one often hastens their demise in trying to avoid it,” Siegeberht pointed out. “I have it on good authority that we should humor him and try our best to stop Karnage at The Temple of The Lost…”
As The Golem growled at him, Adalwin was finally beginning to fully grasp what event was playing out, an event that would also lead to his presence there. “I say we should go.”
“BY THE SOURCE!” The Golem shouted in exasperation. “OKAY, HOW ABOUT WE JUST HAND KARNAGE ULTRAMAGIC ON A SILVER PLATTER THEN!”
“Yup, that’s what I was figuring he wanted…” Blood-Wraith dryly noted.
“ARGH, YOU WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO HEAR THAT!”
“Enough of this,” Blood-Wraith said as he stepped away to transform into Golden Dragon. “Look, I’m going after Karnage, with or without you. If you want to go and warn the city, Golem, then go ahead.”
“You can’t be serious!” The Golem exclaimed as Aureolus activated his Golden Dragon hex. “We need to save Odo, not walk into certain death!”
“Look’s like he’s pretty serious to me,” Ludwig said as he assumed his true form and got ready to take off.
“Morrigan, Adalwin, you’re with me,” Blood-Wraith said as he lowered himself enough for them to get on his back.
“David, with me,” Aureolus said as he also got down.
“Are you sure you can handle the flight, lad?” David asked as he climbed up.
“I’ll do my best.”
“We’ll see you all at the temple then?” Tressacht asked as he summoned a portal for him and Seigeberht.
“Don’t be late,” Blood-Wraith replied.
“Haha, don’t worry, Blood, punctuality is right up our alley!” Seigberht said as the two brothers departed through the portal.
The Golem sighed as he created a hovering platform for himself. “So be it then. We’ll go confront Karnage, but we’re getting out of there the moment things become too hairy.”
Aureolus looked Blood-Wraith in the eye as they prepared to take off. “Are you sure about this, Blood? What do we do if you can’t stop Karnage and the worst happens?”
“You keep fighting, simple as,” he answered with contentment in his voice. It was somber to hear, yet gave everyone the strength to press forward. “And Morrigan? I want you to join the ULTRAMagic Guild and stay with them until this conflict is over, alright?”
She was taken by surprise by Blood-Wraith’s generosity, feeling like she did not deserve it. “Blood, I can’t…”
“Yes, you can. Plus I’d be worried sick if you didn’t. If I don’t make it, I want you to continue the fight in my stead and stick it to The Eternal Order, promise?”
Morrigan felt her emotions well up, but held it together. “I promise, Bloody-Buddy.”
