The stone ruins of the Descendants of ancient times were overrun with shadow constructs, which the group knew meant that The Eternal Order was present. A batch of the constructs had noticed Blood-Wraith and the others' approach and viciously charged towards them. Everyone readied their weapons, but Blood-Wraith indicated for them to hold on. He slammed the bottom of Voidborne into the ground, followed by a column of golden fire erupting from the crystal blade. The flames soared up into the air as a serpentine dragon, then descended in a form invoking that of Leif and razed the immediate area in an inferno that left everything but the shadow constructs unharmed. The dragon of flames then flew over to a nearby area and let loose another firebreath before dissipating. Naturally Blood-Wraith was feeling fairly triumphant after that, twirling his swordstaff around once after he picked it up.
“That’s what I love about shadow constructs-they make an excellent warm up,” Blood-Wraith boasted as some stragglers started to run at them.
David got out his revolver and shot one of the constructs, causing it to explode in a flurry of white and red sparks. “Morrigan, what’s Gore’s plan of attack?”
“Alright, um, I think he wanted to investigate the Royal Archive…”
Ludwig had turned into a bipedal, hulking dog and electrocuted two of the shadow constructs. “Then what are we waiting around here for?! Come on!”
The group moved with a haste to the city square, taking out any shadow constructs along the way. Aureolus had cast his Azure Scorpion hex and charged ahead to take out another batch of constructs with a laser from his tail when he noticed two familiar individuals fighting the constructs nearby. “Adalwin, Golem! Over here!” he called out.
The Golem of Old had finished firing a beam of golden sunlight from his eyes, followed by Adalwin incinerating what remained with a barrage of black and white flames. “Aureolus, fancy running into you here!” Adalwin greeted as he and the Golem ran over to the group.
“Blood-Wraith, what are you doing here?” The Golem asked. “We figured Karnage’s scheme would have had you distracted so we…” he then noticed Morrigan with them as David and Ludwig took care of more constructs that had taken notice of them. “Morrigan, have you finally come to your senses?”
She groaned a little, as that felt a bit condescending. “Yes, Golem, I get it now…”
“You do? You finally understand the consequences of your actions?”
“CAN WE FOCUS ON THE PROBLEM AT HAND?” She exclaimed, making it clear she did not want to talk about the obvious.
The Golem frowned a little, but Adalwin stepped in to speak before an argument could ensue. “Better late than never, Golem. Morrigan, you’ve made the right choice…”
She then snapped her fingers, causing a pair of stones to whiz past Adalwin’s head and strike two shadow constructs like bullets. “I’m… I’m going single for a long time after this…”
Adalwin put his hand on her shoulder. “Don’t drag yourself down to the depths over this. I’ve fallen in with the wrong crowd before, so I know what you’re going through.”
“You… you do?” Morrigan was caught off guard by that, as Adalwin had always been so tight-lipped when working with her.
“And I’d be lying if I said all of this wasn’t partially my fault…”
“Guys, I don’t mean to interrupt the reconciliation, but we still have to deal with Karnage,” Blood-Wraith interrupted as he slashed a construct in half.
“Right, Blood, let’s get moving,” Adalwin agreed. “We spotted him heading towards the Royal Archives…”
“He’s after the Azoth Core stored there,” Morrigan pointed out.
“Just as we figured,” The Golem added. “And if that’s the case, we need to stop him before he heads to The Temple of The Lost.”
“What would he be planning to do with the items he has in a foreboding location such as that?” David inquired as they all began to move forward.
The Golem paused his speech as they ran, clearly uneased. “It’s what we’ve been fearing since day one…”
“Damn it all!” Blood-Wraith roared as he turned into Indigo Wolf and barreled further into the Regal Plaza, practically colliding with Fran who was taken off guard by what she saw.
“By the gods-ECKL ZMAE!” she called out, causing a force field made of a strange, crimson liquid-like substance to surround her. She still flew back and had to pick herself up afterwards, her red dress scuffed up with dirt and ruined. “Well if that is how the youth is going to treat their elders, then I guess we shall forgo the pleasantries…” This was met with a roaring howl from Blood-Wraith that made even someone like her grow fearful.
Adalwin snapped his fingers, calling forth a jet of fire to surge towards Fran. “Give it up, Anne! The jig is up!”
“Zima!” she cast, causing the flames to part around her. “Well if that’s how it’s going to be…”
Morrigan walked up to Anne once the attack had ceased, sword at the ready. “You… you lied to me…”
Anne’s smug face twitched, then stretched into a mocking, subtle smile. “What does it say about a little wench who was so easily hoodwinked then?” Morrigan took exception to this and swung her sword down on Anne, only for her to block it with the same crimson liquid. “Mzds,” she calmly said, sending Morrigan flying back into a building.
“A rich statement coming from one such as you, Anne Vozenilek!” The Golem declared as he jumped up and slammed his fists into the ground, causing cracks bleeding golden light to encircle her. She was then launched up into the air, followed by a beam of sunlight rocketing straight towards her.
“SZZ ETRN!” A crimson shield of glowing light formed around her, blocking the beam. “Won’t let a lady talk, will you? How uncouth of you all!”
Seeing Morrigan leap up into the air and envelop herself in a ball of purple fire arcing with violet electricity, Ludwig used his powers as a demon to grasp her as she started flying and swung her around to give her a speed boost. “HEY, ANNE! CATCH!”
Anne saw the purple, flaming comet heading right for her and knew she could not handle both Morrigan and The Golem at the same time. “ECKL, ETRN, MZSTS!” This void spell allowed her to teleport out of harm's way, at the cost of an alternate version of herself taking the attack and being annihilated in the process. Anne then reappeared not too far away, clearly a little shaken, however. “Blast it all, they’re more tenacious than we’ve given them credit for…”
Blood-Wraith then assumed the form of Azure Spider and leapt high into the air to reach Anne. Aureolus followed on the ground as Azure Scorpion, signaling for the others to keep moving. Upon landing, Blood-Wraith began trying to impale Anne with his metal legs, only for her to dodge out of the way with her magic. Aureolus also tried to catch her off guard with his tail and claws, but to no avail. Anne would have tried to cast a void spell to incapacitate the two, but that would just leave her open to an attack from their allies. She had to stay on the defensive, although she could at least push them towards pursuing Karnage. If she played her cards right, Blood-Wraith would walk right into the trap they had set…
“Bugger it all, she’s a slippery one,” David remarked as the group fended off any shadow constructs that approached as they followed the main battle through the city. “We’re not walking straight into a trap, are we?”
“We’re in trouble no matter what we do!” The Golem answered as he crushed the head of a shadow construct with his hands. “The best thing we can do is stick together when we finally make it to Karnage.”
“Any thoughts, Morrigan?” Ludwig demanded to know.
“Sorry, I’m in the dark about most of this,” she tried to apologize. “You can imagine that Gor…Karnage told me zilch other than ‘go fight Valerie.’”
“Argh, if only I had my old squad here…” Ludwig complained, sending a construct flying with a strong punch.
“No use crying over spilt milk, my boy,” David unintentionally chided. “This is the best we can do for now.”
Eventually everyone made it up to the Upper Square, which sat upon the top of a great hill that oversaw the whole city. It would have been a moment to pause and take in the breathtaking view had the current situation not been so dire. Further ahead at the nearby Grand Plaza was Tressacht and Siegeberht fighting with Volf. The battle was fierce as Volf was nothing to sneeze at with his strange magic. The two brothers were in league all of their own, however, wielding even stranger powers that baffled Volf to no end. Tressacht commanded the essence of water itself and Siegeberht held total mastery over fire in ways that did not feel like they belonged in conventional reality. Volf was beyond confused as he could not read their abilities and was scrambling for an explanation in his head. And then it all clicked for him.
“Oh, haha, I know who you two are now…” Volf commented. “And I’d dare say that means this whole scheme is going to go belly up…” he further muttered to himself.
Siegeberht paused his fire attack, looking incredibly concerned. “Brother?”
“Don’t panic, father said this might happen…” Tressacht answered as he also paused his attack, sensing someone approaching.
“Well, Volf, I’d dare say we have some traitors in our midst,” Anne remarked as she appeared next to him in a flurry of sickly, blood-like fire.
“Indeed we do, Anne,” he commented as the fire made of electronic static around his arms settled down for a moment. Cresting the stone stairs was Blood-Wraith and his group, of which the former was right where they wanted him. “Although perhaps you should keep a better eye on the company you court going forward, Lady Vozenilek…”
Anne was confused by that comment, but took immediate offense to it regardless. “You insolent excuse for a god… I’m going ahead to eventually meet up with Karnage. Do not fail us! Tretah Ultro!” She then vanished a haze of spindly shadows.
“Insufferable cur, talking down to me like that?” Volf griped to himself. “Ah, welcome, ladies and gentlemen! Tonight’s show is going to be one for the ages,” He taunted with open arms.
Blood-Wraith was not pleased by this development, as he needed to get to Karnage. “Save it, Running God! We’re getting through and you can’t stop us!”
“And tonight’s first contestant is Blood-Wraith Raynot! Looking to become a big shot!” Volf declared, as a phantom audience appeared all around the plaza, like they were on a late night television show. “Stepping up to the stand is…” but Blood-Wraith was not having any of it and used a void spell to move past him, with Morrigan following behind him. “Damn it, she wasn’t supposed to get through…” he quietly complained.
“BLOOD, WAIT!” The Golem called out.
“Not good!” Adalwin stated, getting his flames ready. “We need to keep moving!”
“Oh no you don’t!” Volf declared as he enveloped himself in static-based fire. “The show’s just begun after all, even if I doubt we’ll be getting a second season…”
“Wait, what do you two mean by that?” Ludwig demanded to know, sensing something was clearly wrong from what his allies were hinting at.
“If what we've deduced is correct, then Blood is charging headfirst into danger!” The Golem answered as he began to rumble with golden energy, ready to fight Volf.
Tressacht curled his fist and ran up to give Volf a good punch that sent him flying back into a wall. “Then we’ll just have to go right through Volf then.”
“Do we know if there’s anyone else waiting ahead for us?” David questioned, trying to read the area so he could form a plan of attack.
“If we can get past Volf, we should have an unimpeded shot straight to the Royal Archives,” Siegeberht answered as he burned away the phantom audience.
“Good enough for me, let’s keep moving,” Aureolus said as he got out some of his more special hexes. “I’ve got a bad feeling about what’s about to happen next, and I hope it doesn’t come to fruition…”
Volf stumbled forward, laughing in a slightly mocking manner. “You know, kid? I can relate to that on so many levels that it’s not funny. It would boggle your mind if you knew the stuff I knew…” he noted as he began to hum with the white noise of television static, glitching out and distorting as he did.
