Blood-Wraith was a little nervous heading to Earth World as he flapped his mighty wings through the Unlight’s void of space as Golden Dragon. The four elemental planets caused him no anxiety, rather it was the fact that Ludwig and Quasar were with him. Ludwig needed to go on his first proper mission and Quasar was still relatively new to the guild. Truthfully Blood-Wraith was unsure how it was going to go, so Gummi and Barry volunteered to tag along as well. As for the mission, two allies of Morrigan had been spotted around the ruins of The Temple of The Rock God, and Chief Fire-Rock was quick to call on the guild for assistance. Touching down on the arid planes gave Blood-Wraith a feeling of nostalgia, with a winged dog demon and ball of light joining him, who reverted back to Ludwig and Quasar respectively.
“Well shoot, Blood,” Gummi said as he got off of Blood-Wraith's back with Barry. “This has to be a bit of a walk down memory lane for you…”
Blood-Wraith chuckled. “Yeah, and thank the Source we don’t have to rush out to the Metal Oasis to fight the Lich.”
Barry nodded with his own chuckle and took a quick look around the dusty landscape. He then noticed Blood-Wraith was still in his dragon form and hummed with a curious sound of electricity. “You’re not going to switch back to normal, Blood?”
He thought about it, then shook his head. “For now, no. I feel in control like this, as weird as that sounds. Besides, what if we need to quickly take off? You know how Gore plays…”
“Fair point…”
“Hey, hold up a second,” Ludwig interrupted. “Didn’t you say you trust The Golem and Adalwin?”
“Yes, but it never hurts to be ready for the unexpected.”
Ludwig shrugged and nodded. “Alright, I’ll give you that one. So what’s our next course of action?”
Blood-Wraith scanned the area, then turned his attention to Quasar, who looked ready to go. “Quasar, you’ve been working on going invisible, right?”
“Yes sir!” He then vanished from sight, leaving only a slight distortion effect where he stood before reappearing. “What do you want me to do?”
“Go scout the temple and see what you can find. We’ll plan out our next move from there.”
“Loud and clear, Blood… I mean, ULTRAMagic Knight!” Quasar then vanished again and headed off, albeit stepping on some plants along the way.
“Careful what you step on!” Blood-Wraith cautioned.
Ludwig nodded with a smile as Quasar corrected himself, then kicked a rock aside. “I still think we should just head over there and knock some heads…”
“No offense, Ludwig, but I’m with Blood on this one,” Gummi said as he took a seat on a big, flat rock. “Let’s see what we’re dealing with first. I can’t imagine Fire-Rock would be too happy over Blood leveling an entire Mesa all because Gore wanted to pursue some geology.” Barry laughed a little as he took his seat.
“Would you really go all out like that, Blood?” Ludwig inquired as he knelt down and picked up a sparkly rock to inspect it.
“I try not to,” he replied with a sigh as he looked up at the nearly cloudless sky. “But Gore knows how to push my buttons…”
“Dealing with Gore has certainly been a hassle this past year,” Barry commented. “The Hydra of Old has been worried to no end and… Look, Blood? I have to say it-The Hydra is highly suspicious that Gore is Karnage. Think about it-Karnage goes missing, and then a bunch of strange things start happening once Gore shows up…”
The three looked up at Blood-Wraith, followed by him coughing up a nervous cloud of smoke filled with sparks, embers, and a notable brimstone smell to it. “Damn it…”
“I mean, Blood, we have to take that as a strong possibility at this point,” Gummi pointed out. “I know these kinds of people all too well, and the evidence is mounting as time goes on…”
Blood-Wraith groaned, which sounded more like a low rumble. “I hope not, as that would mean Karnage tricked an innocent person… and would also confirm my suspicion that Fran Burne is Anne Vozenilek…”
“Hold up!” Ludwig interjected. “If you guys got those rats with a smoking gun in all but name, why not just cut the song and dance, rally the whole guild, and go after them?”
“Well firstly our reputation,” Barry answered. “As someone who performs at music concerts in The Electric City, appearance is everything. And given the amount of people that flow in and out of The Great Uncity, we need to be careful. There’s also the fact that we don’t know where Gore runs off to. We know Morrigan is staying in the Uncity, but Gore, Fran, and Volf? No idea. Plus if Gore is Karnage, we’d be in trouble as he is nothing to sneeze at.”
“It would be great if we could get Wulfric’s help,” Gummi added. “He could identify Gore within a heartbeat and give us a fighting chance. No doubt you’ve been told about our struggles to get into contact with Wulfric, The Arbiters of Droom, and The Realm of Chaos as of late, Ludwig?”
“Blast it all!” Blood-Wraith growled suddenly. “I just lost my train of thought!”
“Thought about Gore again, didn’t you?” Gummi asked.
“Yes…”
Ludwig then got up to pace, the dirt crunching against the stones beneath his feet. “Well it sounds like you guys got yourself a fine kettle of fish on your hands… I wish I could fully remember my captain’s expertise to help you out.”
“It is what it is, unfortunately,” Gummi lamented. He then looked around, marveling at the rocky landscape. “You know? This place feels a lot like what I imagined the wild west of Earth to be like.”
Blood-Wraith calmly sighed, thankful Gummi had changed the topic. “You know? When things settle down, we really need to take you to Earth-23 so you can see what your home universe is like…”
While that conversation was happening, Quasar had located the temple and saw exactly who they were looking for. On the steps of the majestic, yet aged temple was a masked man and what looked like a living statue. The man wore a white tuxedo, top hat, and a masquerade mask that invoked fire. The statue was a golem-like entity made of brick with a golden energy pulsing through the cracks and seams. It was easy to tell that he was a truly ancient entity. Quasar hid in some bushes near the start of the stairs. Ideally he should have returned to Blood-Wraith and the others, but he wanted to see what he could find out.
“There’s nothing here that can help us, is there?” Adalwin observed, with a subtle disappointment in his words.
“Sadly no,” The Golem replied in a British-sounding voice. “I’d dare say The Rock God isn’t here right now…” He then glanced around, feeling he sensed someone approaching. Leaning in, he spoke in a hushed tone “How are things on Ensio’s end?”
Adalwin could infer why The Golem was acting strangely and also leaned in. “Good, despite Gore’s schemes. Blood seems to finally be coming to his senses…”
“Probably would have happened sooner if Wulfric wasn’t impeded from getting into contact with the guild…” The Golem then quickly turned his head to a certain bush. “Well, I’d dare say we have company…”
“Shoot!” Quasar said to himself as he got out of there… in a fairly noisy way.
“I suppose Chief Fire-Rock noticed us then,” Adalwin noted. “Shall we take our leave or…”
The Golem thought about it, looking out towards the horizon. “Let’s hold off, as I’m curious to see if they brought any of the new members along…”
While Quasar was scolded for taking a risk like that, the others did not dwell on it and quickly made their way to the temple. Standing at the base was Adalwin and The Golem of Old. These two were interesting as they did not actually seem to be allied with Morrigan Devilfay in her attempts to stop The Eternal Order, despite working with her. Things always went wrong for Morrigan and Gore when the duo got involved, and it certainly benefitted the ULTRAMagic Guild time and time again. Blood-Wraith was desperate to know why the pair were always acting strange, but such answers constantly eluded him. Out of respect for the temple, Blood-Wraith returned to normal so as not to cause any collateral damage.
“Adalwin, Golem,” Blood-Wraith said as he walked up with the others.
“Greetings, Sir Raynot,” The Golem replied with a respectful bow
“Ah, Blood-Wraith, our favorite, intrepid ar’ton,” Adalwin greeted. “What can we do for you on this lovely day? A glass of water? Perhaps a run down of what we discovered in the temple?”
Blood-Wraith shook his head with a smile. “Always with the pleasantries, Adalwin… So what are you two up to this time? Chief Fire-Rock was quick to call us…”
“It should relieve him to know that we merely sought information on the whereabouts of The Rock God…” The Golem answered.
“The Rock God?” Ludwig seemed unamused, given the location they were in.
“Yes indeed, Mr. Leichenberg,” Adalwin replied. “The Rock God was a god of the earth from the Epoch, known for his fortitude and stoicism. Approached by The Sepulcher God when the feud with The Tyrant God kicked off, The Rock God refused to go along with The Sepulcher God’s machinations and schemes, partnering up with The Tyrant God. We have no doubt that The Rock God would want to get back into the action in modernity, and would be an invaluable ally. It would certainly be as effective, if not more so, as throwing a rock into the window of The Sepulcher God’s house, if you catch my meaning.”
Gummi gave a lighthearted scoff and crossed his arms. “And that’s all you guys are here for?”
“It would be ideal to tell you more,” The Golem noted. “But alas the walls have ears…”
“That’s a shame,” Barry sympathized, secretly trying to discern more information. “As an aside, I remember a quaint little village from the Epoch, back when I was The Hunter of Old. They revered The Rock God with utmost…”
“Argh-Alright, enough gab!” Ludwig interrupted. “Golem, Adalwin, fight me and show me what you got. And When we win, both of you skidaddle. Quasar, you’re with me.”
“Oh, um, sure, ULTRAMagic Lance,” Quasar agreed, a little surprised as he went to his side.
“Quite the spry youngsters I see,” The Golem noted. “Very well, I don’t mind a quick back and forth. Adalwin shall sit this out, however, as he twisted his ankle in the temple,” he said as he stepped over to a clearing he wanted to be the arena or sorts.
“Two on one doesn’t seem fair though…” Quasar said as he stepped over with Ludwig.
“Guys!” Blood-Wraith protested. “We’re not here to fight! Golem and Adalwin aren’t our enemies!”
Ludwig sighed, knowing this would happen. “Blood, with all due respect, let me work. You said it yourself that you’re getting serious, so get serious. Besides, I figured you’d learned your lesson from the fiasco with Will…”
Naturally Blood-Wraith babbled angry gibberish for a second, causing the others to quietly chuckle. “FINE. Just don’t rough up Golem too much…”
“Your concern is appreciated, but not necessary, Sir Raynot,” The Golem assured him. “And this should make an interesting test for your new recruits.”
Ludwig conjured up a sword and shield made of glass, charged them with lightning, and ran towards The Golem. Quasar backed him up with his gravity manipulation, but The Golem was not so easily phased. He focused and began glowing with a golden light, followed by him summoning giant blocks of earth that split into swarms of flying bricks. The Golem was able to keep his opponents on their feet with his Ancient Earth magic. Not being able to gain the advantage annoyed Ludwig to no end, but he could not deny the challenge was getting his blood pumping.
Adalwin got out a folded up bunch of papers from his pocket and used the opportunity to speak to the rest of the group. “Barry, my boy, how did your last concert go?”
“Oh, Adalwin,” he replied with a hum of electricity. “It went great, thanks to your advice…”
He then handed him the papers and patted his hand. “Then you should try this arrangement next. I’ve been dabbling in more of your music-you could say I’m a real electric man! And you should definitely check those papers when the clock strikes 10…”
“10 you say?” Gummi questioned. “The number of God…”
Unfortunately before Adalwin could say more, his pocket watch went off with a rhythmic chiming. “Blast, not again-Golem, the red is on the move again!” he called out.
“Ha, so he thinks he can pull one over on us…” The Golem remarked as he dispelled his magic. “My apologies, gentlemen, but our attention is needed elsewhere,” he elaborated as he opened up a golden portal and began to walk away from the battle.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?!” Ludwig demanded to know in protest. “I was just getting warmed up!”
“Sorry, lads, but we’ll have to continue this when the weather’s nicer!” Adalwin said as the two hurried into the portal with it closing behind them.
Ludwig paused, dispelled his glass magic, and softly grunted. “So what was that all about?”
“It’s just something they do,” Barry answered, looking through the papers he was given.
“We’re still trying to figure out what their code words mean,” Gummi clarified.
“Ah I see…” Ludwig had a very good idea as to what was going on, but he would need more information to confirm it.
“So now what do we do?” Quasar wondered.
Blood-Wraith looked at the temple, then to the distant landscape and saw the afternoon sun casting a warm glow on the ageless rocks. “Let’s go tell Chief Fire-Rock the good news. And we might as well stay the night given how late it’s getting. Ludwig you need to try Rattle Lizard Stew, it is a fantastic Rock People dinner…”
Ludwig chuckled as he dusted off his hands. “Okay, but what if Gore pulls something?”
“We’ll call up the guild when we get to the village and let them know what’s up. I wouldn’t worry too much, as Schwarzes can most likely handle it if something pops up.”
