“So, Blood, how are we doing on new faces?” Vexation asked with a chuckle as he scratched his goatee.
Blood-Wraith leaned back in his chair with a sigh as the other guild members filed into the main hall. “Better, but… well actually Ludwig would be a new face…”
“Blood, you’re worrying about all of this too much,” Vexation assured him. “The Epoch guild had a slow start and needed time to get going.”
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, sweetie,” Drusa added. “And another thing is that… and I just lost my train of thought…”
Blood-Wraith looked concerned over that as Drusa rubbed her temples. “It’s not that anomaly again, is it?”
Vexation rubbed his face like he had a raging headache. “I am going to throttle whoever is messing with our heads, even if I have to break all of reality to do it…”
Drusa leaned back, sighed, and brushed her purple hair aside. “It’s just one of those days where… Oh I got nothing at the moment. Let’s… Let’s see what good news Cronus has for us.”
“Ever since Gore showed up…” Blood-Wraith reluctantly remarked to himself as he turned his attention to the stage. Given his disdain for Gore, he was slowly beginning to relent on his previous stances and attitudes.
Cronus stood up and went to the podium, looking happy to be back. “My fellow guildmates, it is great to be home. A lot happened during my mission, so I won’t bore you with the extensive details. Just know that I have addressed the vast majority of the issues we wanted to tackle, including getting into contact with The Colossus of Old, repairing the UST-ARC 3 so it can finally head home, and sending the Ravagers to protect the remains of Feuerland. I know Corentin is a little antsy about his creations being that far away, but given Gore’s antics…” Some of the other guild members gave some nervous laughs. “Now in regards to the other matters-Ludwig? Would you like to say hello?”
“Oh, um, sure,” he replied as he got up. It was a little nerve-racking, but he supposed he owed it to the guild given everything that had occurred with the Future Squad. “Uh, he-hey, everyone… good to see you again, I guess? Don’t worry about what you say around me as Cronus told me a bunch of stuff about what you guys have been up to, including the obvious. I mean, I’m a winged dog demon, so I guess I’m already non-linear to a degree, ha. I’d say more about my past, but it’s all really hazy at the moment. I remember being a PMRDO captain, but that’s about it. Still, it’s an honor to be accepted into the guild and I hope I can help with the ongoing situation and live up to the precedent my future self has already set.” Ludwig then received a round of applause from the guild, which made him feel good.
Weaver stood up right before Ludwig stepped away from the podium, and it was very clear what he was going to discuss. “Ludwig? On behalf of the guys, the Blades, his majesty King Sten, and all of Shadowland, thank you for delivering the final blow to Milosh…”
Gummi also stood up to speak. “We understand you may have some mixed feelings about the final battle for Shadowland, but you ended decades of conflict in fell swoop.”
Ludwig smiled, feeling honored despite his chaotic actions back then, which were no more than a blur to him. He did recall raining a torrent of lightning down on a loathsome beast, however. “Glad I could help,” he said before going to sit back down, receiving another round of applause.
“David, would you like to speak next?” Cronus inquired.
“Why of course. Thank you, Cronus,” David said as he stepped up to the podium. Looking over the hall of sconce light and ornately carved wood, David could tell the guild was quite the lively bunch and it made him eager to start working with them. “Greetings, everyone. I am Dr. David Robert Livesey, magistrate of southwest England. I’ve served my community for countless years and I even served in the British army at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. I understand all of you need a medic and another tactician never hurts. My expertise is yours for the foreseeable future and I will do my best to help resolve the conflict at hand. Here’s hoping we can wrap this all up as soon as possible so we can tend to other situations where the guild is needed.” He then paused, allowing the guild to give a round of applause. “Now before we all disperse to tend to our business, Sir Blood-Wraith has something he would like to say…”
Blood-Wraith stuttered gibberish for a second, causing some of the others to laugh. “Oh alright…” he said as he made his way up to the stage. “So a little housekeeping before I state the elephant in the room. Firstly, Audawakrs, Gebhard, Cornelius, and Calvin have successfully made it to the Tower of Babel. They are keeping an eye on it, but we can recall them at any time if need be. Secondly, in case you haven’t heard, we have two other new members with us today: Shaye Smets and Ahhotep VII.” The two stood up for a second to say ‘hello’ and received a round of applause. Blood-Wraith then took a breath to keep himself calm and steady, as he knew it was time to finally acknowledge the egg on his face. “Everyone, we’re getting serious. No more messing around with Gore and Morrigan, we are fighting back!” This warranted a round of supportive cheers, but Blood-Wraith still felt his left leg twitch a little.
“Ha, I’d be surprised if you weren’t after yesterday’s incident, matey!” Johnathan stated as he entered the main hall with Brandr, taking off his tricorn hat. His boots squished a little as he tracked a small amount of sea water across the floor.
“You’re late, John,” Blood-Wraith pointed out, a little annoyed. “Today’s meeting was deemed important…”
“Sorry about that, Blood,” Brandr replied. “It’s just that the crew of The Rambling Glory needed help shoving off from Thunder Helm Port at the Wind Terror Sea. You know how rough it can be on those waves, ha!”
“Aye-so what’s the good news, me hearties?” Johnathan asked before going silent.
“John? What’s the matter?” Brandr then noticed exactly who he was looking at and felt a wad of anxiety tighten in his chest. “Oh…”
“DR. LIVESEY? What in the seven seas are you doing here?!”
“John, my boy!” David said as he stood up. “I am so happy to see you safe and sound…”
“Oh no no no, don’t you ‘John, me boy’ me, matey!” Johnathan shot back as he stomped up to the stage, with a worried Brandr right behind him “You got a lot to answer for! Just where in the blue blazes of Davy Jones’ Locker were you?! You start reading those cursed books from Treasure Island and just vanish on us?”
David took a subtle breath so his nerves would remain steady. There was a great deal of guilt on his conscience. “I had to seek more private accommodations to study alchemy and the occult, lest I be accused of something ridiculous such as witchcraft.”
Jonathan sighed with his hands on his hips. “Study… Well, it’s a little late to provide any help-I already set out on my grand voyage.”
“I’d ask how that all went, but I’d dare say your presence here speaks for itself.”
There was a slight scoff, but this quickly turned into a laugh, as Johnathan could not stay mad. “I said goodbye to dad, mom, Trelawney, Ben, and Silver… was going to say bye to you, but well…” They both laughed and it was quite endearing to everyone else.
“There won’t be any issues with Dr. Livesey’s presence here, will there?” Tiberius interjected. “He’s been working with Cronus for a while now and his results have been promising.”
“No no…” Johnathan conceded. “It’s just… It’s been a while is all. Welcome to the guild, Dr. Livesey.”
“Thank you, John,” David said as he shook his hand, then hugged him. “I’ll do my best to make it up to you.”
Brandr had nervously stayed a few steps back, but now he approached the two. “Hey, Doc, it’s been a while…”
“Brandr, how wonderful to see you again. I am dreadfully sorry for the prejudice I expressed towards you back home, especially given what I’ve learned about magic. Can you forgive me for my past ignorance?”
He smiled and shook his hand. “Of course, David. Wind under the bridge.”
“Well I guess we should show you around, Dr. Livesey,” Johnathan noted. “Want to come along, Blood?”
“Sure, John,” he replied.
Tiberius cleared his throat and approached the podium. “I suppose that’s meeting adjourned then. If you have any questions for Cronus, Ludwig, or Dr. Livesey, feel free to ask them.”
The next few days were quite interesting as David and Ludwig got settled in. David was able to get a good grasp on a couple things about the guild from his brief time with them thus far. First was that they were all very close, which he admired. He was concerned about them growing their roster and how that would affect their cohesion, however. Second was that while the guild was certainly talented and powerful, they were quite disorganized. David respected their camaraderie and tenacity, but he needed to get them in line and ready to move at a moment’s notice.
David’s plans to the guild in line were met with a little friction, as to be expected. Ideally he at least wanted everyone to check in every morning, as this would get everyone in the mindset he wanted. People like Shaye and Weaver were all for it, but Razor not so much. The proud Sunset Wolf threatened to leave the guild with Mizuki on multiple occasions, but David humorously called his bluff each time with a healthy dose of wolf-related jokes. Razor would ultimately give up on his heated declarations to leave the guild, as David was really starting to grow on him. Trouble would still come on the third day, however, and Blood-Wraith was quick to respond.
“DAMN IT, not now…” Blood-Wraith complained as he hurried through the main hall.
“Blood, my boy, what’s the matter?” David asked as he wiped his face from his breakfast.
“Some of the activists are in the city protesting…”
Wait, seriously?!” Ludwig questioned, nearly choking on the last of his pancakes. “Wie?”
“No clue, but Brenna’s already on the case…”
“Then we must get over their posthaste!” David asserted, unsure how they were going to get there that quickly.
“Haste is my middle name-FLZO ARU!” Blood-Wraith called out with a snap of his fingers, causing his usual void door to show up. Entering it into the Iron City, Blood-Wraith saw a group of people standing outside the lift station with signs and placards. They were holding everyone up, being booed by the Iron City citizens, and were confronted by a group of Royal Guardsmen. “Okay, it’s just Christina…” he said with a sigh of relief as the three began to approach the situation.
“Christina?” Ludwig questioned.
“Christina Whyte. She’s a bit more sensible than the others and, well, I talk to her about stuff.”
“So you have a rapport with her?” David inquired.
“I’m trying to convince her to join us-Christina! I thought I told you to ditch Rick!”
The woman stood there holding her placard, seemingly quite annoyed with her fellow activists and how they were quickly gathering ire from picking verbal with the Descendians. Christina was actually quite pretty, with tied-back brown hair and beautiful blue eyes. She did not seem like the kind of person who would be hanging around with a charlatan like Rick Dirrt. “Blood-Wraith, you are not going to stop this anti-monarchy protest, as it is for the sake of The Unlight…”
“Yeah, shut up, Eternal Order member!” an activist with an accumulated beard jeered at him. He had a subtle stench to him and a hanging gut that was poorly hidden by his subtly stained T-shirt, yet was not completely obese. Either way he looked like he could not even run away from a dog and would crumple like wet tissue paper when faced with an actual threat.
“QUIET YOU!” Christina hissed in anger.
“Yeah, watch it, buddy,” Brenna warned the activist as she cracked her knuckles, the guardsmen with her getting ready and some of the Descendians present cheering her on.
“Ahem, Blood-Wraith, I’ve told you time and time again that monarchies are a thing of the past where I’m from,” Christina started to say. “Democracy puts power in the hands of the people to fight back against tyranny.”
Blood-Wraith groaned and face palmed, his frustration obvious. “Source, not the democracy spiel again… Christina, want to hear another one of Will’s stories? About the chaos he went through prior to the Red River Incident?”
The bearded activist then spat on the ground and yelled “ENOUGH OF THIS TRAITOR-LET’S GET HIM!!”
“NO NO NO NO!!!” Christina desperately screamed, powerless to stop the unjustifiably irate activists.
There was a panic and the Descendians present were not going to take it, making it clear that there was going to be a physical altercation that the Royal Guardsmen wanted to avoid. Ludwig then got in between both groups… “Allow me.” His eyes went pitch black, his teeth turned razor sharp, and he roared with an inhuman vocalization that turned into a long and loud thunder clap. The attacking activists felt true fear in that moment and tried to run for their lives all while screaming like spineless cowards.
“They’re making a run for it!” Brenna exclaimed, even though it was their doing. She was enjoying seeing the nuisances make things easy for her. “Get’em, men!” The Royal Guards were quick to apprehend and tackle the activists to the ground, with the Descendians present cheering while this happened.
“What about this one, Captain Thompson?” A guardsman asked as he stepped over to Christina.
“Hold on, O’Neil, Blood wants to handle this one...”
“Thank you, Brenna,” Blood-Wraith said as he stepped forward. “Christina, you know that Hector Fang dirtbag from Earth-23?”
“I’m… I’m aware…” she shakily answered, recovering from the shock of Ludwig’s roar.
“Did you know he tried to revoke Will’s citizenship and have him deported from America?” He could see Christina's horrified look and did his best not to smile. He knew he had her this time. “Yeah, he tried to renew and weaponize the Patriot Act, but thankfully The Liger Brigade and Charon Maddox of Maddox Heavy Industries stepped in and kept him safe.”
“How…” Christina started to say. “How could they even do that?! That’s immoral, and corruption to the highest degree…”
“Hector Fang and Monty Black gamed the system, buying votes and tampering with the elections, followed by them brow beating anyone who opposed them as subversives who were opposed to democracy. And all of this was for The Eternal Order’s schemes,” Blood-Wraith elaborated. “Christina, stop working for Gore and Rick. They don’t care about you and you’re wasting your potential with them…”
“Potential?”
“Yes, I can sense it-you could potentially achieve ULTRAMagic.”
She looked deep in thought over this idea and was clearly conflicted. “Is there… Is there any other choice for me? You know I won’t be able to go back to the Uncity after this…”
Blood-Wraith smiled and held his arms out. “It’s all around you, Christina!” he proudly proclaimed. “The answer comes to him who tries, and The Iron City welcomes all who let the light into their life!”
Christina felt a big smile appear on her face as she started to blush. “Goodness, where would I even start?”
“Well since you’re still a little nervous about monarchies, how about you come with me to go talk to Englehart and Dunja? I think you’ll really like them.”
“And I must say, Miss Whyte, that it was truly impressive how you stood your ground against Ludwig’s fury,” David commended. “Faced with forces beyond your understanding in this Cosmos of ours and you didn’t even move an inch?”
“Yeah, it takes guts to stand up to a demon of the Goetia, frau!” Ludwig assured… even though his teeth were still sharp and his voice was still a tad demonic. He noticed Christina flinch a little and quickly shook his head back to normal. “Oops, sorry about that, mein schlechtes…”
“Um, yeah, Ludwig,” Blood-Wraith agreed as he began to guide the three into the Lift Station. “Let’s not dawdle! Brenna, can you take care of the activists?”
“Already on it, Blood!” she replied with a salute as the guards began to take them away. “Alright, men, let’s get them off to jail for questioning. I want to know how they even got into the city in the first place…”
