Will was a little nervous, but also laughed in anticipation. “Now you see, Eloise, this isn’t going to be like last time,” he declared with a little dance. “I’m rip roaring and ready to go.”
Eloise sighed, growing impatient. ‘How so, Will? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“Void magic! Roh!” Will clapped and caused several, harmless explosions of colored smoke to go off behind him and his squad. “Taadaa,” he said with outstretched arms.
“Flashy, like my tokusatsu shows. Alright then…” Eloise remarked, sizing up what she perceived of Will’s newfound skill set. “But can your void magic compare to my cryomancy?!” Wicked blizzard winds whipped around Eloise like a small tornado, causing Will and the others to back up a little.
“Hey, Ludwig, I’m going to do it…” Will said with a cheeky smile as he patted his friend’s arm.
“You’re going to do it?” He also had a smile on his face, fully encouraging Will.
“I’m going to do it.”
“Ah shoot, he’s going to do it!” Rostislav commented with the same encouragement as Ludwig. “Back up, everyone!”
Once the others were a fair enough distance away, Will took a breath and readied himself. “XHRA-NEZ-ROH-QUN-Zasiel!” In a burst of infernal energy, the true form of Zasiel appeared. He roared as he fanned out his wings, then laughed triumphantly. Everyone was thoroughly impressed with this display of void magic, clapping in response. “What do you think, Eloise?”
She was surprised, but nodded and stood her ground. “Alright, but let’s see if Spike knows how to play fetch…”
“Hey, I ain’t no lap dog, Miss…”
“Will!” Yale interrupted. “No offense, but get on with it!”
“Yes, get on with it!” Tiberius ordered. “Before my dwindling patience runs out!” The others gave him concerned looks for that outburst.
Will’s left leg began shaking. “Er, right! S-Sorry about that Ti-Tiberius…” Then his whole body shook with anxiety. “Let’s-let’s begin, Eloise!” Sadly in a burst of sulfuric smoke, Will reverted back to his normal self, looking quite worried. “Oh, well, haha… this is awkward…” A quick plume of yellow and pink smoke vented from his neck.
Blood-Wraith and the others turned to Tiberius with disappointed looks on their faces. “Real smooth, Tiberius,” Blood-Wraith chided.
Tiberius promptly face palmed and groaned. “For the love of the Source! I’m going to go fix up the guild hall. The first one to damage it again is getting my boot up the arse!!” he said as he stormed off.
Barry nodded and gave a concerned hum of electricity. “So I take it he hasn’t fully worked out all of the kinks yet?”
“Mads warned us about this,” Ludwig replied.
“Want me to summon Vapor 6, Will? We talked about it and he’s more than happy to help you.”
Will took a breath to ease his nerves and got out a familiar card. “Don’t worry, Barry, I have a back up plan. Azure Spider!” In a flash of blue light, Will assumed the form of a giant tarantula made of black metal and blue lava. He rumbled like a furnace and radiated a great deal of heat, with a bright enough glow that could be faintly made out during the day. “Antares would never let me hear the end of it if I did not have this on back up, let me tell you, Eloise.”
“There you go, Will!” Blood-Wraith complimented. “Glad to see the hex finally formed!”
“Thanks, Blood!” he said as he waved his front leg.
“So without any further adieu, I trust?” Rostislav inquired as he encased himself in armor made of molten rock.
“Be careful, Will,” Cronus cautioned. “That form is new and Eloise is a crafty opponent. You’ll need to be on top of this battle at all times.”
“Duly noted, Cronus,” Will confirmed as he got ready to move.
With the formalities and preparations all squared away, Will took the lead by charging right for Eloise while Ludwig, Rostislav, Cronus, and Barry dealt with the golems. Eloise had brought a full battalion of cake, candy, and ice cream golems, so there was certainly enough action to go around. And she certainly had her work cut out for her as Will was actually a bit hard to read. He was fighting similar to Blood-Wraith’s skill set as Azure Spider, like some of that behavior had imprinted on the hex itself. Will was also mixing in some of his fighting sensibilities, which were sloppy and unorganized. The fact that Eloise was having to switch how she responded on the fly was throwing her concentration off, but she managed to keep her cool regardless.
“DON’T JUST BLOCK AND STRIKE, WILL,” Eloise criticized as she easily deflected his metal legs with her swords. “Up the tempo if you want to win!” She danced around in a flurry of icy wind-infused slashes, with Will barely managing to dodge them.
Will was growing panicked over Eloise’s undeniable skill, but then had a sneaky idea. “HEY, ELOISE; Look, it’s your mother!!”
“What!? Where?!” she exclaimed as she looked away… only for something to tighten around her waist, causing her to look down. “You son of a bi…”
Eloise had been lassoed with a string of silk and was swung around before being thrown into the air. Will then shot multiple fireballs at her, with Blood-Wraith cheering him on. Eloise quickly realized that what he was doing was similar to a move that Blood-Wraith had used on Dunja in their duel and smiled. Using some of the energy she had accumulated from her cryomancy, Eloise rocketed towards the fireballs, slashing them apart with the raging winds that fortified her blades. Ludwig could see that Will was wide open, so he used him as a launching point and flew into the air to meet Eloise head on with a sword and shield made of glass.
With Ludwig taking his turn against Eloise, Will scurried over to deal with the golems. Eloise was unprepared for Ludwig’s tempo as he was playing to win. He was able to easily match her with his persistent slashes despite only having one sword. Eloise had to regain the advantage, so she readied her left blade for a parry. It worked and Ludwig’s blade was sent flying out of his hand, but he was prepared for this. A sudden shield bash sent Eloise reeling backwards.
Rostislav took the opportunity to land a volcanic punch from behind that forced Eloise to tumble across the ground. Not taking his gloating sitting down, she growled and charged at him with a barrage of intense sword slashes. Rostislav’s molten armor was being chipped away piece by piece, so he knew he had to respond quickly and effectively. Catching a sword slash between his gauntlets, he breathed a sigh of relief, but realized something was wrong when he saw Eloise smiling. His armor was rapidly hardening, leaving him completely helpless. Rostislav had walked right into a trap…
Eloise summoned a vortex of fire around her free blade and planned to use Rostislav’s power against him. Barry noticed this and zipped right over as a bolt of lightning that electrified the air around them. Just as Eloise’s blade was about to hit them, Barry created a magic barrier, causing the blade to bounce off with the sound of an electrical beat. This sent the flames intended for Rostislav surging in the other direction, nearly singeing Cronus’ hair and robes in the process. After apologizing to his guild mate, Barry created an energetic burst that sent Eloise back a bit, followed by him exciting the particles in Rostislav’s armor so it would become molten again.
Seeing a golden opportunity to catch their opponent off guard, Cronus created a small, super cell thunderstorm in the palm of his hand and infused it into the blade of his scythe. It roared with the sound of a strong tornado and was whipping up the winds around him. Every slash he made sent a wave of fierce winds towards Eloise that she could just barely dodge by the skin of her teeth. Many golems were sent flying, and Will and Ludwig were nearly caught in the crossfire multiple times. Eloise knew she was no match for Cronus, so she called upon what remained of the golems to distract him. She then glanced over to Will and noticed that he had reverted back out of exhaustion. The battle was lost, but she could at least score one victory, even if it was a desperate one…
Azure Spider had taken a toll on Will and he could not fight anymore. Looking over to his right as he sat there on the ground, his blood ran ice cold as he noticed Eloise heading straight for him, blades at the ready. His head was empty as he tried to think of a void spell, leading to nothing coming to mind, further causing his fear to overwhelm him. Bracing for the worst, everyone began to panic and moved to protect Will. Blood-Wraith got in front of him, ready to summon a magical barrier to block Eloise’s advance… only for Valerie to appear before them. She cast a spell consisting of an invisible force that pushed Eloise back, causing her daughter to lose her balance and fall to the ground.
Valerie was not happy and it could be seen as plain as day from the scowl on her face. “ELOISE STEPHANY TER AVEST, just what in Abaddon do you think you’re doing!?!” she yelled with utmost disappointment in her voice.
Eloise looked her mother in the eye and her fervor died right then and there. She knew it was over, but stood her ground for one last act of defiance. “What do you think you’re…!?”
“DON’T TALK BACK TO ME, YOUNG LADY!!”
With a growl, Eloise marched right up to her mother. “You promised to unite The Unlight and save the Cosmos! And now you’re just giving up!?”
“I’M NOT GIVING UP! If I can’t defeat Sir Raynot, then I have no right declaring myself a protector of the Cosmos, end of story! Furthermore I will not tolerate such dishonor from one of my own! YOU’RE GROUNDED!”
Eloise stomped her foot on the ground like a child and kicked a golem’s severed head aside. “Oh whatever!”
Valerie was about to scold her again until she noticed the mess around them. “AND YOU USED MY BEST GOLEMS!?!” she cried. “MAKE IT A WEEK THEN!”
“MOM!!” Eloise protested in a whiny voice.
“MARCH, MISSY!” Valerie ordered as she opened up a portal to the castle. She stopped Eloise right before she entered, however. “You may watch the duel on TV, but otherwise stay in your room until we get back…” Eloise groaned in response. “What was that, young lady?”
“Yes, mom…” she grunted as she entered the portal with it closing behind her.
After teleporting what remained of the golems back home, Valerie took a second to compose herself. The change in her expression was like going from night to day. “You’re not hurt, are you, Will?” She asked in a concerned, motherly voice as she extended her hand and helped him up.
“Nah, I’m fine, haha,” he replied as he dusted himself off. “Jeez, just wait until the guys back home hear about this one… and thank you, Valerie.”
“I leave for one minute and all chaos breaks loose!?” Tiberius cried as he threw his hands up. “Are you all okay?” Aside from some bruises and scrapes, the five would be fine.
“Tiberius, I am so sorry for my daughter’s misbehavior,” Valerie apologized with utmost reverence. “I promise you I had nothing to do with that little stunt…”
He held his hand up to calm her. “It’s alright, Valerie. Kids will be kids… and besides, it gave the Future Squad, Barry, and Cronus all a good work out…”
“A WORKOUT!?” Will exclaimed. “She nearly killed me!!”
The others could not help but laugh, with Tiberius shaking his head. “Well then make sure that doesn’t happen again in the future. Now, Valerie, are you ready to go?”
“Of course. In fact we were waiting for Blood-Wraith when I sensed what Eloise was up to… Speaking of which-Blood, where did you get those robes? You look fantastic, like a true mage of the Grand Feuerland Academy of Magic.”
Blood-Wraith blushed a little and smiled. “Well you see, Uncle Deimos…”
“Yes indeed, I had an old robe from the Epoch itself!” Deimos proudly interjected. “I knew we had to dress Blood properly this time and we just so happened to have Mind-Wraith’s old neophyte robes on hand from when he was a boy. Quite fitting if I do say so myself.”
“Well it’s a wonderful choice, Deimos,” Valerie complimented.
“And I must say, Valerie, this new coat of yours is simply exquisite. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say it’s made of… hold on, this is polymateria! Where’d you find so much of it?”
Valerie giggled. “Oh I just went and asked Baxter kindly. He’s such a charming young man…”
“Ah, haha, I see!” Deimos could feel himself getting nervous as a swarm of butterflies fluttered around his stomach. “Say, Valerie? Would dinner sometime soon sound good to you?”
Valerie was subtly blushing and could not hide it. “Oh, of course, Deimos. Where and when did you have in mind?”
“Well I was thinking of…”
Vexation could not stop himself from laughing aloud. “Hey, lovebirds-I’m all for this, but let’s save this for after the duel, aye?”
They were both a little embarrassed. “Oops, my bad,” said Valerie. “Let’s go.”
Tiberius laughed sympathetically as he snapped his fingers, opening a portal to the colosseum. “Take notes, Schwarzes,” he said as they all entered and stepped into the city. “Love strikes at the most inopportune times.”
“Oh absolutely,” he agreed. “You should see my parents sometimes…”
“Right here, kiddo,” Will pointed out.
“Ha, sorry, dad!” Ultimatum replied as he and some of the others chuckled.
“Aw, it’s alright,” Will conceded. “We’ve definitely had our fair share of odd moments, Sam and I. It comes with the territory.”
Yale chuckled as he buzzed around Will’s head. “And just how many details are you leaving out?”
“Alright, enough about my love life!” he protested as he tried to swat Yale away to no avail, making the others laugh once more. “We got a duel to attend!”
