Barry was back at the guild right on time the next day, just as Valerie promised. And she further made good on her promise by sending him with a fair amount of documentation on her intel on Gudrun. Tiberius was quick to call a meeting with the guild higher-ups to discuss the matter. Blood-Wraith on the other hand felt an odd compulsion to visit his tomb. Not wanting him to go alone and being genuinely curious, Will and Rostislav volunteered to go with him. Blood-Wraith was a little leery, but Brenna insisted, also volunteering to go along. Figuring things would be fine, Blood-Wraith agreed. And while it was expected that Golden Dragon would be used for transport, Blood-Wraith had a better idea, snapping his fingers and summoning a door that opened up to the blustery Roaring Mountains.
“Since when do you know void magic, Blood?” Brenna inquired as she shut the door behind her, causing it to vanish.
“It’s not really void magic, rather me asking The Screaming God for a portal…”
Brenna took a breath and put her hands together. “Blood, that’s void magic,” she pointed out with a snicker.
He thought about it, then began to lead the group inside, past the ancient, stone entrance as the colossal doors grinded against the dusty floor. “I suppose you’re right on that one, Brenna.”
Will was amazed and creeped out by the dark, empty halls of the tomb. The sconces lit with magical flames caused the sculptures and busts of eldritch beings to cast long shadows throughout the expanse of the structure. “This place is incredible… and it’s all for you, Blood?”
“Yup. The Screaming God caught wind of me and the whole Shadowland situation and wanted to give me a place where I could hide out or recover if things get dicey.”
“In a tomb, lad?” Rostislav questioned.
Blood-Wraith paused and sighed. “Yeah, I’m aware of how strange all of this is…”
“Well hey, it’s better than nothing…” Will said as he stepped on an odd brick. This made his blood run cold, unsure what to make of what had just happened. “Um, guys? Help…”
Yale zipped down to inspect the floor and saw the depressed part. “Will, don’t move. Rostislav, it’s a booby trap…”
“Right!” He rushed over and got ready to push down. “Alright, Will? I’ll hold it down and you run when I say go…”
Blood-Wraith shook his head with a quiet chuckle. “No need, guys,” he said as he pointed up.
Will braced himself as a stone pipe rumbled above him… only to be showered in a rain of pink flower petals that faded into magical dust upon touching the floor. “I am… very confused…” he admitted as he picked his foot up, the brick grinding back into place.
“Aw, that’s adorable, Blood,” Brenna complimented. “Did Kresimira suggest that?”
“Yes indeed, and she even taught me the spell that I then passed onto The Screaming God.”
Rostislav laughed as he rubbed one of the petals between fingers. “My mother would have loved a spell like this. So what was it beforehand? You can’t tell me it was flower petals…”
Blood-Wraith indicated for all of them to move on, then explained as they came upon another entrance. “It turns out that the tomb came with boobytraps, and Drago was in her weird phase, obsessing over them when we first discovered this place. It was originally a glue trap, so I disabled it when the tomb was handed off to me and obviously replaced it with flower petals recently.”
“Okay, but what if you get actual intruders, Blood?” Yale put forth as a valid concern.
“Um, well… I guess I’ll just reimplement the old traps then. Truthfully I am not that worried given where this place is. Anyways, welcome to my crypt, guys.”
Blood-Wraith’s crypt was a large chamber with a beautiful, black coffin in the center. The walls were decorated with incredible murals of Blood-Wraith’s past exploits, accompanied by a shelf along the wall that held various trophies and relics. Will, Yale, and Rostislav were awestruck as they wandered around, marveling at the makeshift museum display of it all. Eventually Will stopped at what looked like a shed, stone talon on a small pedestal. It seemed lifeless at first, but closer inspection revealed that it radiated ambient power from long ago. Running his finger along the coarse, rigid surface caused Will to feel a sense of either nostalgia or anemoia, like he was looking directly into the past.
“That’s Leif’s,” Blood-Wraith pointed out as he calmly approached. “I found it while I was cleaning up recently and figured I’d keep it around.”
Will chuckled a little. “A toenail?”
Blood-Wraith smiled, as he was fully aware of how absurd it all was. “Yeah. Leif would have told me to throw it out, but he’s not around anymore.”
“It’s the thought that counts. I’d probably do the same… Plus how would you throw it out? The thing’s practically a rock!” This made Blood-Wraith laugh.
“Shame I couldn’t see Leif off for his final battle,” Brenna stated. “Unfortunately I was off with Gostislav dealing with Aurdwakrs Kappel, before he joined our side.”
“Well hey, at least you were off fighting the good fight,” Rostislav assured her. “Drusa bless his soul,” he said as he touched the talon.
“Wow, what a dragon…” Eloise said after a moment of silence.
At first Blood-Wraith nodded, but then he quickly realized who it was. “ELOISE? How did you get in here!?”
“Heya, Blood! How’s my boyfriend…” She was caught off guard by what happened next.
The suit under Blood-Wraith’s uniform glowed a bright blue, and he quickly bound Eloise’s arms behind her back with spider’s silk, followed by him pushing her out of the crypt. “Out out out out out!” he ordered.
Eloise giggled. “How forceful… Jeez, at least take me out to dinner first, Blood…”
“Pardon?” Blood-Wraith then went bright red as soon as he realized what she was getting at. “OUT!”
Both Will and Rostislav began laughing uncontrollably. “Looks like you got a real fire cracker on your hands, laddie!” Rostislav asserted.
“Wow, Blood, didn’t know you had it in you!” Will added.
“BOTH OF YOU SHUT UP OR YOU’RE EXPELLED FROM THE GUILD!” Blood-Wraith barked at them.
They were not phased, causing Brenna to shake her head (even though she also found Blood-Wraith’s embarrassment quite funny). “Boys, please act your age. You’re both adults after all. Do I need to speak to your commanding officers?”
Rostislav finished laughing, then tapped Will’s arm. “Alright, enough’s enough. We don’t want Fido getting mad at us again…”
“Yeah, whew…” Will agreed as they all left the crypt.
Don’t worry, Brenna,” Yale cut in. “Marcus would’ve gotten on his case…”
“Yale, for the love of my sanity, please don’t tell Colonel Trelawney about this,” Will chided.
“Good to hear, Yale,” Brenna replied with a slight laugh. She then stopped in her tracks upon spotting three golems that looked like they were made of peppermint and taffy. “Blood, SNAFU…”
“Noticed. Eloise?”
“Oh those are just mom’s new candy scouts,” she answered nonchalantly. “She wanted me to take them on a quick test run, no biggie.”
“In my tomb!?” Blood-Wraith got a cheeky smile in return that said it was all her idea.
Brenna stepped forward as the golems grouped up, assessing the situation at hand. They were slender and sleek, suggesting they were quick and nimble. The hard candy seemed to be a mix of bone and armor, protecting and holding the taffy together. Truthfully Brenna was not sure how things would play out, but cracked her neck and got out her nightstick regardless. She then gestured for Will and Rostislav to step forward.
“Alright, boys, we got a tango on our hands,” Brenna instructed. “Here’s hoping you two know how to boogie. Rostislav, you take the left. Will, on the right. Don’t turn your back on them and only help each other out if there's an opening. Are we clear?”
“Roger that, Lt. Thompson,” Will replied.
“Loud and clear, Ma’am,” Rostislav confirmed.
This was not Brenna’s first rodeo given her encounters with the shadow constructs of The Eternal Order in the past, but that did not mean she was looking forward to such encounters. At least the candy scouts were not out to turn her into one of them, thankfully. They must have been fresh out of the oven, as Brenna’s had trouble dealing with her close quarter combat. Brenna would not let up as her law enforcement training from The Iron City Royal Guard was paying off once again. Her hand to hand fighting style accompanied by swift jabs and strikes from her nightstick were a force to be reckoned with… and she was not even using her magic yet.
Rostislav was up to his usual strategy, attempting to overpower his opponent with sheer might. He was trying to not go overboard out of respect for Blood-Wraith’s tomb, which was something his candy scout was taking advantage of. It was getting on his nerves as the golem taunted and teased him with its attacks. A throbbing, burning anger was pounding in his head until he finally snapped. His eyes began glowing a fiery, blood red as his canines extended into fangs. Growling with a lust for ichor, Rostislav yanked the candy scout over and sunk his teeth into its neck. He was surprised when the bounty he drank had the taste of honey rather than the usual acrid, metallic taste he was used to.
Will was having a strange time as he had attempted to use the Azure Spider hex again. It was still not fully formed, turning his arms into sharp, metal spider legs. They were a little freaky and awkward, but succeeded in keeping the candy scout at bay. With Yale employing trickery through illusions, they had the upper hand against the golem. With a final distraction of dancing lights from the dire fairy, Will impaled the golem’s core, deactivating it and causing it to fall forward on his leg. Blood-Wraith saw this and tried to voice his usual complaints as Will yanked his limb out of it and kicked it aside.
“Will! What did I say about yesterday-augh!” Eloise had bumped him away and then freed her hands with small blades of hardened ice cream from her arms.
Will put his spider legs up like he normally would with his hands. “Well hey, at least I didn’t behead it this time.”
Brenna had heard that and knocked her golem on the head with her nightstick one more time for good measure. “He’s got a point, Blood.”
Blood-Wraith calmly groaned and nodded. “Alright, fair enough. I’ll let you slide, Will, but don’t push it.”
Eloise was about to voice some praise for Will’s weird arms, but then she heard what sounded like a guttural mix of growling and hissing from Rostislav. Her blood froze as she quickly rushed behind Will as the others went to his side. “What’s wrong with him!?” Eloise cried. “Is he a…a…va…vam…”
“A Vampire?” Will replied, a bit scared himself. “Uh-huh…”
“Wait, what!?” Blood-Wraith and Brenna exclaimed in unison. “Why did none of you tell us that beforehand?!” Blood-Wraith demanded to know.
Will was about to answer, but Rostislav cocked his head towards them, unnaturally so. There was an utterly ravenous look in his eyes, with gold liquid smattered all over his face. Once he realized what was going on, he calmed down and returned to normal. “S-sorry you had to see that…” he said as he got out a handkerchief and began to wipe his face.
Blood-Wraith took a deep breath and swallowed hard. “Rostislav? What kind of vampire are you?”
He gave a guilty chuckle. “Well, I’m not like the ones in the movies. I don’t burn in the sunlight, nor do I sparkle. I love garlic, and a stake through the heart would kill anyone… I am allergic to silver, though.”
“Do you… do you need any blood?” Brenna questioned, incredibly nervous. “I don't know what I can do, but I can, um…”
“It’s alright, Brenna, I was given some from my family’s private vault before I came to the past. Besides, I don’t usually drink blood. It’s only when I get overwhelmed by my instincts that I need a small amount. And even then it only fuels my vampire powers, which I don’t typically use. I mean, ignorant people back home call me a dirty blood sucker and I really don’t want to prove them right…” Rostislav then looked at the golem he had desiccated and winced. “Sorry about that, Eloise…”
She took a nervous breath and snapped her fingers, teleporting the golems back home. “It’s alright… Jeez, getting out of here before something else weird happens… oh, Blood! I, um, had another reason to come here other than all of that. Here, a gift from mom.” She handed him a small box containing an arcane-looking gold ring encrusted with a brilliant, emerald-colored gem that sparkled like a twinkling galaxy.
“Wow, what is it?” he asked. “It feels so familiar to me…”
“Mom told me that a mage called Mind-Wraith once used it for his spells and gave it to my Grandpa Llyod for safekeeping. Neither of them seem to be around at the moment, so mom figured it was best to hand it off to you.”
Blood-Wraith smiled and closed the box. He would be lying if he said he did not appreciate Eloise and Valerie doing that for him. “Thanks, Eloise. Need any help getting back home?”
“Thanks, but I’ll walk. I need exercise and whatnot.” Eloise started to leave, but noticed Will’s arms were still spider legs. “What’s the matter, Billy? Are you going to change back?”
He then looked down and started to panic. “Uh, guys!? Help…” Eloise saw the spectral hex card embedded in his back and plucked it, handing it to him once his hands were back to normal. “Oh, thanks, Eliza…I mean El-Eloise. Sorry, Eloise. How did you do that?” Will knew he messed up, given the looks he was getting from Yale and Rostislav.
Eloise paused for a second. Just who was ‘Eliza’? “My mom’s a hexer, remember? Anyways, Catch you cats on the flipside, peace!” Upon exiting the tomb and making it a good distance down the mountain trail, Eloise adjusted her armor and began to muse aloud to herself. “A vampire? Ha! Also that Will, he’s the one we need… Would be nice if mom told me what was up, heh…” She then began to ponder the strange slip up. “Eliza… Eliza? Who’s Eliza? He is from the future… So does that mean…?” Pondering it further, Eloise thought of a powerful name and title for herself. “What if I was… Empress Eliza! Empress Eliza-Rex!” Eloise then laughed at the absurdity of it all. “Nah, I’d never be that powerful… although, Emperor Blood-Wraith Raynot does have a nice ring to it… Jeez, I really need to get my head out of the clouds, haha!”
