The Unlight
Matter can only rearrange itself in so many unique ways before it begins to repeat previous patterns. These repeating patterns also tend to deviate from the original pattern in both simple and complex ways, typically observed through their actions. This is what leads to alternate timelines and universes. If person A is an accountant in one timeline, they could be a plumber in another. If they are a male in one universe, they could be a female in another. It is important to note that this is an oversimplification of a very complex subject. There is a great deal of details and nuance that are beyond the scope of the 3rd dimension. This collection of differing patterns has to exist somewhere and that place would be the void.
What is the void? These are regions of space where minimal, conventional matter exists. A void is also indicated by the absence of universes. The void itself is a very odd place as it seems like nothing, but you cannot ever have nothing in reality. The void is made up of a substance designated as void matter. Void matter is the building blocks of the void and usually does not come into contact with conventional matter. This relationship is observed with universes. Void matter will hold them in place with the help of gravity and antigravity. Universes are not solid objects, so it is easy for objects to fall out of them. What would happen if say a rock fell out of a random universe and into the void?
The Unlight is an irregular, non conventional realm that exists out in the void. It is the result of a rock from an unknown realm ending up in the void. Individual objects are not supposed to exist in the void, so it tries to compensate by creating an environment around the object. As the void created land for this rock to exist on, it kept going and ended up creating an entire continent. This land mass was fully functional and capable of supporting life. Naturally said life began popping up from the newly formed land. Life from different universes also began showing up too. The void continued to expand the rock’s new home further and further until it became the Unlight we all know today. And even then, it is still expanding to this very day.
And what of the rock? It is still at the core of the Unlight and is now called “The Unlight Stone.” It cannot be removed nor touched by anyone. Oddly it seems to have developed a consciousness at some point. It has been known to send out an avatar to explore the realm it now resides in. Notably the core actually seems to be impossible to reach. Due to the ever expanding nature of The Unlight, it has layers. There is the normal Unlight, the Deep Unlight, the Trench Unlight, the Abyssal Unlight, and a realm even deeper than the Abyssal Unlight. Where the core is beyond this point is unknowable to all but the old gods and the Unlight Stone.
The name of the Unlight depends on what and who you ask. The name used by Earth and the ULTRAMagic guild, Unlight, is one way of naming this realm. It indicates that this realm is, but also is not. It looks like a normal world, but it is not a normal world. The metaphor in the name is a paradox, just like the realm itself. Other names such as “Unworld,” “Non-Space,” “The Unreal,” and “Unvoid” are also acceptable.
The environments of the Unlight tend to vary based on what can support life and the residents of said environment. Carbon-based life lives in areas specific to their needs. Life based on other elements also have their own areas. Focusing on Carbon-based life, the Unlight appears familiar, but not exact. Living in the Unlight is difficult and tricky. The realm is subject to an incredible degree of randomness. You could stumble into a forest, but it would not be your typical forest like what you would find on Earth.
The Unlight mirrors planets from various universes to the best of its abilities. It is borderline impossible to anticipate what you will run into when exploring. A hallmark of these environments is that something will always be off. You will always be able to tell when you are in Unlight land. Finding familiar enough environments is not that hard, however. It is also possible to find recreations of buildings and landmarks, albeit a bit off.
Traveling through the Unlight is not easy. Time and direction are non linear, making intention and desire crucial. It is very easy to get lost in the Unlight. Because the realm draws from everything and anything, multiple instances of it exist. These are its equivalent of alternate timelines and universes. In addition to wandering into these different instances and other universes, it is also possible to wander into environments you are not made for. Natural born residents of the Unlight do not seem to have any issues as they know the realm like they know the back of their hands. They are also adapted to living in the Unlight. There are dedicated groups of explorers (such as the Central Unlight Explorers Guild) that specifically seek out interlopers to help them navigate the Unlight or get them back to their home realm.
Life in the Unlight is just as diverse and unknowable as any active planet, if not moreso. The flora and fauna of the Unlight ranges from specimens that evolved naturally in the unlight to interlopers introduced into the Unlight from other universes. What you will encounter truly depends on where you go and how far you are willing to look. Life can be dangerous, peaceful, or fearful in the Unlight. Despite the randomness, there are a handful of noteworthy entities. Some of these include:
There are some bastions of dedicated civilization in the Unlight. Two prime examples are The Market District and The Great Uncity. The Market District is a colossal city of stores, shops, merchants, and markets. If you can think of something, you can probably find it… you just may have to go down a few back allies first. The Great Uncity is one of the few known active and dedicated cities in the Unlight. It is a sprawling city that is a collection of wanderers, outcasts, and Unlight denizens. It is widely regarded as “missing the point” of the Unlight by most denizens. At the same time, they are not going to tell people how to live the Unlight
There are two other interesting cities of note. These are Shadowland and The Iron City. Shadowland is a victorian-esque city that has seen its fair share of woe and conflict. The Iron City is made of iron (naturally) and gothic architecture, and is the home of the Descendants. In the center of the city lies the Singing Storm Tower, high in the sky.
What are some notable societies and organizations in the Unlight?
Explorers are a dime a dozen in the Unlight, but few have the bravery to truly go out and explore. Dragoslava is one of those uncommon few (even if she did wind down in recent times). Her exploits have led to multiple discoveries and even some areas being rediscovered. People such as this are very valuable and many seeking knowledge seek them immediately. Many want to know all there is to know about the Unlight, but such a task is impossible. Despite the plentiful amount of explorers out there, the Unlight is ever expanding. It is impossible to map out in its entirety, and that’s not even accounting for changes to already known locations.
Is the Unlight in any danger? Not at all. Is it safe to explore it? No, but since when has that stopped the adventurous? If you ever plan to visit it, stick to one of the populated cities. If not, seek out an explorer. You may just end up finding something new and fantastical. Just keep in mind the mantra repeated by the majority of denizens: Respect the Unlight and it shall respect you.

- The ULTRAMagic Guild, a guild of mages and warriors with the rare ULTRAMagic trait. They seek to watch over the Unlight, help maintain balance, and make sure no troublemakers use the Unlight as an attack vector.
- The Iron City. This is the home of the Descendants, the sons and daughters of the Primordial Hunters. Their kingdom has persisted throughout the countless eons and stands as a beacon of perseverance and piety.
- The Metal Empire, led by the fearsome and stoic Empress Eliza-Rex. In the past she sought to conquer the Unlight as to carry on her mother’s ambitions, but she recently backed down from those plans, electing to explore and tame the Unlight instead.
- Shadowland. A young kingdom that rose from the shadow of the fallen Feuerland. Shadowland had a rough start, but now rivals The Iron City.
- The Unending Forest. A former Primordial, this is the home of various groups such as The Tree People and The Sunset Wolves.
