Elaine and Leonardo

Given Heinrik Rofocale’s storied history, it was only natural that he would eventually have a descendant. Elaine Gabriella O’Nessie is a strange woman capable of a type of magic that is somewhat uncommon in the grand scheme of things. Furthermore, Elaine became one of the few humans from Universe-23 to set foot into the mysterious realm known as The Unlight. She lives there with her son, Leonardo, and the two have an incredibly fascinating history.

Elaine Gabriella O’Nessie

Elaine's Ancestors

Elaine’s story goes back to World War II and Heinrik Rofocale. Heinrik was taken all over Europe, fighting the axis powers. One night he got cut off from his platoon and was lost in the countryside. He then happened to stumble across a house he could hopefully bunk at for the night. Unfortunately the resident of this house, a woman in her mid thirties, was being harassed by German soldiers.

Heinrik was in trouble as he did not want to get into a fight this close to a civilian. At the peak of his weariness and exhaustion, he said screw it and temporarily manifested as his true self. He then casually strolled up to the soldiers and sent both of the flying with two good punches. He had no idea if they survived or not, even in the modern era. As to be expected, the woman was incredibly grateful and more than happy to let Heinrik spend the night.

The woman found Heinrik to be quite the interesting fellow and fairly handsome. They talked about this and that, shared stories, and had a hearty dinner. The woman in question was a loner, something Heinrik did not realize at the time. She never found the perfect man for her which led her to sleep with Heinrik that night, leading to the two being fairly… busy. Heinrik did not have the heart to say no, as his mind was scrambled and he was into it.

While not the most professional moment of his military career, Heinrik was a man in his prime after all. He would leave the following morning, not realizing he had impregnated the woman. The woman would later admit to her friends and family that while she was absolutely grateful for Heinrik’s help, she also really wanted to bear his child given how interesting he was. Heinrik would not have been bothered had he known. This child would eventually go on to be Elaine's grandfather.

Elaine’s Childhood and Teen years

Jumping ahead a great deal, Elaine was odd in that she was a half-demon, a secret kept for some time by her parents. Her two color hair, unnatural heterochromia, and a line going down her face indicated this. Despite these strange traits, no one really seemed to care outside of people petty enough to pick on her. She was one of the more quiet children, preferring to spend time on her own reading.

Elaine did make a few friends though. One of her friends was a rather energetic lad named William Ford. How it happened was that Elaine would just tag along with Will's elementary school escapades. The two clicked together and hung out whenever they had free time. Of note was that Elaine was displaying magic potential and would show Will from time to time. Will had no idea what this was, but was impressed nonetheless.

The two would be separated midway through middle school, but they did their best to stay in contact with each other. Eventually Ellen the Wayward found out about the girl. She knew who Elaine was and that she had some kind of magic potential. In fact, her great granddaughter was showing the potential for a fairly uncommon type of magic. On this hunch, she called up one of her friends, the demon Vassago.

Vassago was the third demon listed in the Goetia, being a prince of Inferno. Being a good natured demon, he naturally took interest in the magicians of Earth. The Weave Collective (the guild for Weave magic) had also interested him greatly, causing him to get involved with the guild. He was also good friends with Ellen and her underlings, so he would occasionally do favors for her and the guild. Vassago would observe Elaine for some time before concluding she had aptitude for Weave magic, a strange case indeed.

Vasago would invite Elaine to Arcane-Life headquarters where she would get a chance to meet Ellen. Ellen then revealed to Elaine that she was indeed a half-demon and explained what weave magic was. Elaine was thrilled to learn this stuff and wanted to start practicing immediately. Notably Ellen was a little hesitant to reveal Elaine’s ancestry to her. She wanted to give it a little time to gauge how Elaine would potentially react.

Elaine had been studying the occult for some time and had wondered what other potential she possessed for magic. She was going to study classical necromancy initially, but it was clear where her talents were. It was during this time when she would meet Samantha, a practicing alchemist. The two had an equal interest in magic and would become good friends. Samantha and Ellen was what prompted Elaine to study alchemy on the side.

Elaine’s Adulthood and the Unlight

Elaine became a noteworthy figure in the weave magic scene as she was one of the rare few who had aptitude for weave. Despite not wanting to admit it, she was quite the capable mage. In 2018, Samantha had met Will and this led to a reunion between the former classmates. The two were ecstatic to see each other again. There was a cause for silent alarms in Elaine as something appeared to be wrong with Will. It felt like he had made huge steps forward with his magic, but was then sent back an equal amount of steps. She was happy to see him again regardless. This was a productive time as Elaine felt motivated more than ever to keep improving her magic. She had improved so much that in 2020 she accidentally sent herself to the Unlight.

Elaine was a bit scared and confused when she entered a realm that seemed to be a ghostly mirror of Earth, including a replica of her house to boot. After exploring for a bit, she concluded she had gone overboard with her magic, followed by her meeting Spiritus Magni Drusa. The Atlantean goddess had noticed her entering the Unlight and was utterly fascinated by her prowess in weave magic. She taught the confused half-demon about all sorts of stuff including Atlantis, the Spiritus Magni, The Unlight, The ULTRAMagic Guild, and even some of her aberrant magic. Drusa would also bring Elaine to The Iron City to meet her husband, Ermenrich Denzell.

Discovering Her Ancestry

Once Elaine had established a connection to her house back in Universe-23, she decided to settle down in The Unlight. She felt the realm was perfect for her arcane research, as it was paradise to her, unburdened by the political upheaval on Earth at the time. Eventually she did go back to Earth so she could see her friends and family again. This was difficult to do as the presidency of Hector Fang and Monty Black was creeping her out to no end, especially given the unbridled amount of chaos the two politicians were causing. In 2022, Elaine had met an interesting individual named Vladislav Velimir Dracul, which further led to her meeting Heinrik Rofocale.

Heinrik knew the instant he saw Elaine that there was something familiar about her, but he could not put his finger on it. Ellen would step in to reveal that Elaine was his descendant. It all made sense to Heinrik after that, followed by him giving Elaine a big hug. Elaine was also thrilled to find out that Ellen was her ancestor and that she had a living great great grandmother. Heinrik of course promised he would come visit her from time to time, despite sharing Abezithibod’s leeriness towards The Unlight.

A New Project

At some point in the Unlight, Elaine would do something odd. She created a Weave construct. For years she had been trying to create one out of a scarecrow, but had not succeeded yet. This time she had an idea based on what Drusa had suggested: What if she tried infusing Prima Materia into the scarecrow in addition to Weave magic? It was worth a shot.

After several practice runs, she gave it one big attempt. Unfortunately it seemed like it was another failure, so she stepped away to ease her nerves. Just as she began writing in her journal, she heard coughing and wheezing. Reentering the room, Elaine saw a boy clutching his chest, trying to learn how to breathe. After teaching him how to breathe, she picked up the boy and took him to the living room where she helped him get the rest of his bearings. Elaine would go on to name the boy Leonardo Hammond O'Nessie (Leo for short).

The birth of Leonardo had caught Drusa's attention. And what perfect timing as soon a wayward swordsman would enter the Unlight. This swordsman was going by the name of Captain Roger, but Drusa revealed he was actually a Spiritus Magni from Universe-0X named Manius. Drusa then explained that he was in need of training and Elaine was just the kind of teacher he needed. Elaine was confused and concerned when Drusa proposed the idea to her. While she had just pulled off creating a weave construct, was she really in a position to be teaching anyone magic? And a deity no less? Elaine was quite nervous, but Leonardo was there for her and promised to help her every step of the way, despite how young he was.

In regards to Elaine

Personality-wise, Elaine is a neat freak. She prefers to keep everything organized and tidy, getting irritable when people leave things messy and disorganized. Everything she does in relation to her studies is written down in journals with proper dating and context. Everything is to be documented and learned from. She does get unorganized during her experiments, but she will eventually reorganize everything.

Elaine is dedicated to her studies, refusing to settle down just because it seems like she has made a big discovery. She will never be finished, never be satisfied, and will never stop learning. Aside from the manic obsession with knowledge, she likes to create stuff. Her particular interests are art and food. Nothing is quite as satisfying as a finished painting, a successful experiment, or a fresh loaf of homemade bread. Regardless of her work ethic and social awkwardness, she is friendly and very helpful when it comes to teaching.

Elaine was turning into a bit of a recluse before Leo, but that changed when he entered the picture. Now she is a bit of a worrywart and is not sure how to be a mother. Fortunately Leo is a smart boy and is there for his mother. Will and Leo are responsible for finally breaking Elaine of her silence habit. As a kid she did not speak much, but having people to talk to ended that for the most part. And thankfully a strong man in his prime by the name of Jackson Woodall from the Magic Anomaly Investigation Group (M.A.I.G.) seems to have taken interest in Elaine. The two get along well and appear to be dating.

It is important to note that Elaine can get a bit testy when interrupted or when an experiment does not go right. She also feels pressured to keep moving forward given her heritage and the expectations she thinks are placed upon her by the Weave Collective. On rare occasions this leads to mental breakdowns where she gets on the floor and starts repeating whatever the problem was. This is when Leonardo steps in, brings her to the living room, and puts in a movie to calm her down.

Elaine's philosophy towards magic is that she prefers substance over style. Her spells are not the flashiest, but they get the job done. She also loves messing with metals through Alchemy, seeing what she can create. There are all sorts of fantastic creations on display in her house in The Unlight. On a related note, Elaine is very protective of Leonardo and will go out of her way to keep him safe, a sentiment shared by Jackson.

Something Elaine has been learning about as of late is Drusa's Cause & Effect magic. Weave magic is perfect for this odd, aberrant ability. So far Elaine can only avert injuries, but she is continuing to learn as time goes on, with help from Drusa of course. And on a final note, Elaine's magic makes her hair act weird. It goes all over the place and refuses to be brushed down. It is not uncommon for her to tie her hair back so it does not get in the way.

Leonardo Hammond O’Nessie

Leo's Birth

Leonardo Hammond O’Nessie is a weave construct created by Elaine O'Nessie. Originally he was just a scarecrow until Elaine had the idea to create a construct using weave magic. Her previous attempts with just weave magic had failed to yield results. Elaine was stumped until she remembered a talk she had with Spiritus Magni Drusa. The goddess had given her some pointers and tips in regards to this project. Something Drusa said about also using alchemy gave her the idea to use Prima Materia in addition to the other materials.

The ritual required the following materials:
  • The Scarecrow (his body)
  • Weave (his magic)
  • A drop of Elaine's blood (his blood)
  • A drop of Elaine's saliva (his voice)
  • A strand of Elaine's hair (his identity)
  • Salt
  • Sulfur
  • Void (Prima Materia)

Leonardo’s Great Potential

The birth of Leonardo caught Drusa's attention almost immediately. She was so proud of Elaine and congratulated her with a big hug. Drusa then immediately declared herself Leonardo's aunt, despite the convoluted logic of that. Despite Drusa not being related in any ways, Leonardo accepted her regardless. This event further prompted Drusa to select Elaine to be the teacher of Spiritus Magni Manius, an interloper who had recently popped up in the Unlight. If Elaine could cast a weave ritual that complex, she could handle Manius.

Drusa would have happily sat down to teach Leonardo alchemy, if she was not busy at the time. The boy definitely had the potential for it. To resolve her issue, Drusa enlisted the help of Hermes Trismegistus. Despite rumors claiming Hermes gave up teaching alchemy because of the fall of Atlantis, this could not be further from the truth. Hermes was always willing to teach those willing to learn. Funnily enough Hermes had grown fairly stir crazy in recent times and was itching to teach someone.

Something Hermes noticed is that Leonardo inherited several traits from his mother and was quite studious. This was good as the seven step process for making a Philosopher's Stone required a focused mind. Leonardo had figured out how to break down base matter into impure Prima Materia using the 4 base elements. He then achieved the Blackening step, but the Whitening step in which he begins to purify the Prima Materia immediately tripped him up.

Despite Leonardo's frustration, Hermes has reassured him that he is doing a great job so far. One does not simply create a Philosopher's Stone overnight. Of course, Elaine was a little jealous that Leonardo achieved the Blackening step so quickly. Still, she was very proud of her son and was eager to see him progress with his alchemy. Leonardo continued his studies and currently assists his mother in teaching Manius weave magic.

In regards to Leonardo

Leonardo's personality is an interesting case since he is very young, so it has yet to fully develop. A couple of traits do shine through, however. Firstly he is very inquisitive. Secondly, he likes to keep things tidy. And thirdly, he is a problem solver. These are most likely traits he inherited from his mother. Leonardo does seem to have an issue where he will just stand still, unsure what to do. He will then proceed to vocalize his frustration. This impasse can easily be resolved by providing him assistance or encouragement.

Fortunately Leonardo has no issue with his birth and the nature of his existence. What confuses him is why his mother is so protective over him. Surely he can take care of himself, right? Another thing that confuses him is love. Not familial love, but romantic love (doubly so given the presence of Jackson). What is the point of it if all kids are created in a magic ritual by their parents? Or are they? And what is the point of said romantic love if he is not human? This leads to more frustration as these things he will have to learn in time.

In regards to him being a construct, he is effectively immortal and cannot age. If weave magic was to be forgotten, he could theoretically die. Fortunately this can be avoided with something like a Philosopher's Stone. That being said, Leonardo is not a human despite his appearance. Age is also somewhat irrelevant to him. Obviously Elaine celebrates his birthday, but age ultimately has little bearing on him.

As for his durability, Leonardo can reattach severed limbs. This can only go so far, however. Healing is relatively quick for him as long as something is not obstructing the recovery. The Black and Red bodysuit he typically wears under his normal clothes was created by Drusa. It is magical armor that also serves as a focus for his magic. She utilized a design based on the armor Ermenrich had created for Teunis Van Hautum, so the armor is very effective in protecting Leonardo.
