Devils
Devils are a ubiquitous type of entity from the realm known as Inferno. They are the first residents of the realm and have persisted to this day. While their name has been confused and misused over the eons, they have remained the cheerful, easy going demons that they are supposed to be known for. They also play a key role in necromancy, being the noteworthy entity to summon. Unbeknownst to Earth, they have quite the history in their home realm.
What are Devils and where do they come from?
Devils are proto demons that were the first residents of Inferno. While they do not perfectly remember their origin due to age and information loss, what they do remember is the meaning of their name. Devil in their tongue means “Children from darkness.” Something that sets devils apart from demons is their elemental affinities, which influence their appearance and mannerisms. Devils are also comparable to the Ophanim, Cherubim, and Seraphim. These angels were the first residents of Heaven, prior to the arrival of archangels.
Context: Demon is derived from the Greek word “daimōn.” This concept denoted an entity who could be both corporeal and incorporeal. It is fitting for the residents of Inferno as they can also take on these properties.
What happened when Angels started showing up?
Adonai had great luck in Heaven when he showed up with his kin. The residents of the realm took him in and worked with the angels. Seeing this success, four archangels set out to find their own kingdom. This group consisted of Demoriel, Carnasiel, Caspiel, and Amenadiel. They saw great potential in the devils of Inferno and wanted to lead and guide them.
The devils could sense the greatness of the four and began to revere them. Each archangel was charismatic and intelligent, presenting ideas that the devils could get behind. Some devils were growing tired of living out in the wilderness, so they began learning under the archangels. This would lead to the first demons, who would go on to build great cities all throughout Inferno. Of course most devils choose to remain as they were, which was fine with the archangels, or the four emperors as they were now known.

Ianoda and Nasargiel
Things were a bit hectic as everyone got settled into their new roles. The demons were a little confused as to why the devils did not join them, but accepted their decision regardless. In time, another archangel would show up. This was the brother of Adonai, Ianoda. He was looking to build the Prisons of Inferno and needed six devils to be wardens alongside him. The four emperors were surprised at first, but Ianoda promptly caught them up to speed on what had happened in Heaven.
Two rogue gods, The Sepulcher God and The Crimson God, had attempted to flood Heaven with sinful souls. The excuse was that they could be easily redeemed, while in actuality the rogue gods were trying to destabilize Heaven. Ianoda would not take that transgression lying down, so he got to work. This incident would also be a contributing factor to The Sepulcher God being sealed away in The Night Realm.
Devils all over Inferno took great pride in their people being selected for this great task. This also led to them revering Ianoda and taking pity on Heaven’s plight. They were more than happy to help and quickly volunteered six of their best. A wind devil would become Warden Envy, an earth devil would become Warden Sloth, a gravity devil would become Warden Lust, a metal devil would become Warden Greed, an abyss devil would become Warden Gluttony, and a flower devil would become Warden Pride. Ianoda would round this team off by becoming the warden of Wrath and the leader of the wardens.
Due to Ianoda’s activities, devils would start engaging more with demons in the cities. This has been attributed to Ianoda and the wardens bringing attention to the accomplishments of the demons. It was perfect timing since Inferno would see the arrival of Nasargiel the Lion. This angel would serve as a messenger for Heaven, but also showed up to warn Inferno of an impending threat. A rogue god known as The Rampage God had set his sights on the realm.
The Rampage Wars
The Sepulcher God had provoked the arrogance and pride of The Rampage god, causing him to attack the Inferno of Universe-23. His leader would be Lord Ultra, Master of Tachyons. Nasargiel had been going toe to toe with this issue for some time and was only able to hold them off for so long. Heaven’s armies descended into Inferno, ready to defend the denizens of the realm. The four emperors were appalled, but Ianoda figured something like this would happen eventually.
Context: Lord Ultra is a 13th dimensional, Ar’ton lord from the outer-void. This is the region of the void beyond the Cosmos itself. His presence was cause for concern as The Cosmos can only accommodate 0D through 10D, with 11D and 12D entities needing to stay in the Heavenly spheres (The Unlight and the Dream Realm do allow some leeway, however). Lord Ultra being 13D meant that he was greater than anything that could be conceived in the Cosmos, only rivaled by God and the rest of the Old Gods. Lord Ultra also could not fit in the Cosmos, relying on emanations to do his work. This limitation is what allowed Nasargiel to keep him at bay, despite only being 8D.
Further context: Most demons and Devils range from 4D to 5D, with some becoming 6D, and a select few becoming 7D or higher.
Everyone in Inferno was united as they fended off the armies of The Rampage God. Following several major battles, Nasargiel was finally able to talk some sense into Lord Ultra. It turns out that he had been tricked by The Rampage God into thinking that Universe-23 was a dangerous anomaly. In fairness towards Lord Ultra, that is somewhat true given that Universe-23 was intended to be cast into the Cosmos Graveyard. Lord Ultra’s denouncement of The Rampage God allowed The Madman of Old to step in and go after the rogue god. It was a good thing too, because The Madman was unsure if he could defeat Lord Ultra.
Inferno celebrated their victory, but little did they realize that the masterminds behind the plot had a backup plan. The Sepulcher dispatched The Running God to Heaven to convince a group of angels to rebel. This group, The Watchers, were fed lies that they would become great kings if they went to Earth and mingled with humans. This irreverence resulted in a time that would go down in infamy known as “The Mt. Hermon Incident,” being partially detailed in The Books of Enoch (The Dead Sea Scrolls).
The Mt. Hermon Incident
Seeing the failure of The Rampage Wars and sensing power brewing in Universe-23, The Crimson God and The Running God tricked The Watchers into being irreverent. The idea was to destabilize Earth with knowledge humans were not ready for. A similar incident had occurred with Atlantis, albeit that was done out of pettiness and spite. Nasargiel and Lord Ultra were quick to warn Adonai about this, allowing Heaven to act with utmost haste.
The resulting upheaval was a time of great chaos for Heaven. This betrayal of The Watchers was a shock to everyone. While there were some bad actors that were rightfully punished, many were innocent. Adonai was prepared to strip every Watcher of their honor and divinity for their grave foolishness, but the devils and wardens pleaded for Adonai to be merciful. Adonai would heed this plea and merely cast The Watchers out of Heaven. One of The Watchers, Azzazel, would be tasked with overseeing the efforts to redeem these angels.
The Mt. Hermon Aftermath
The aftermath of the Mt. Hermon Incident had many ramifications for Earth, Heaven, and Inferno. The offspring that resulted from The Watchers and humans mingling together, the Nephilim, would go on to become the Titans and the Olympians. The Spiritus Magni acted upon this, so Adonai and Ianoda left the responsibility in their hands. Some angels would also leave Heaven over the controversy of the incident, a noteworthy one being Zasiel (a reincarnated primordial). As for Lord Ultra, he would stay in The Unlight and the Dream Realm so he could keep an eye on the Cosmos and stay in touch with his newfound friend, Nasargiel.
Devils would end up learning about Earth and that it was a new frontier to explore. They began visiting it, for better or for worse. This would allow necromancy to truly take off. As a further result of this, Devils would become the face of necromancy, being the go-to summon for magicians. Annoyingly the word “Devil” would become synonymous with Satan and Lucifer. This confuses and offends Devils to this day as they are not fond of the two fallen angels. Another misconception Devils are not happy about is when they get confused with Imps and Earth Spirits.
Stepping aside from the negative aspects, something great that occurred was an increase in affinities for Devils. More concepts were becoming known to them, resulting in all sorts of unique and exotic affinities. It should be noted that Heaven and Inferno are still on edge to this day, despite the seeming peace at the moment. While not every devil is squeaky clean, it is ideal for them to behave themselves. Thankfully the conflicts of the past have not stopped the good-natured devils from putting their best foot forward on Earth.

Why do devils matter?
Devils are the poster child for necromancy and the go to summon for aspiring necromancers. Before going any further, what is necromancy? Necromancy is divination through the dead, or communion with spirits as some prefer. It is believed that any type of spirit is considered “dead” due to being incorporeal. The idea behind necromancy is to ask these higher powers for favors and honors.
Typically devils are easy to summon and cooperate most of the time. Many are good natured and just want to meet new people. There are nowhere near as many devils as there are humans in any universe, so it is a good thing that very few people become true necromancers. It is highly recommended to start out with a devil as summoning demons, angels, and/or fae can become very complicated. Devils are easy going and friendly, not requiring fancy rituals or invocations.
Working with a devil
How things go depends on who the magician calls upon. An intelligent devil will help one with issues that require knowledge and wit. A devil with high strength will help one with issues that require muscle. It is all about knowing what the devil summoned is good at. A crucial thing for a magician to do is getting to know their devil. Every devil has their own personality and behaviors. Of course, some have adult tendencies that should be made a note of. Because of this, it is a widely accepted rule that minors are not allowed to summon devils. The exception to this are devils that are known to be safe to work with. These individuals go on to be mentors or teachers for young necromancers.
Typically magicians and devils will form pacts or contracts. These are mostly a formality, declaring that the two will work together. Some of these involve memorizing sigils or agreeing to verbal contracts. It is important to note that “signing your soul away” is a pop culture invention that the vast majority of devils consider to be an offensive stereotype. Despite humans asserting that all stereotypes have some basis in reality and most devils trying to deny this, an extreme minority of devils have actually tried to pull the “signing your soul away” stunt. These individuals are shunned by devil-kind as a whole. And lastly, there is a good chance that any devil attempting such a deal is either con-artist or a lowly earth spirit pretending to be a devil.

A magician can summon as many devils as they desire, but it is paramount to become familiar with a select few. The ideal number is considered to be 2 to 6. Becoming close to a devil allows the magician to work more efficiently with them. Having a strong bond also allows for the two to temporarily merge, unlocking new strengths and abilities. Plus having a devil as a loyal friend is considered truly invaluable.
Affinities
Devils come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. This is due to their affinities. Devils will embody a particular element and concept, indicated by their appearance. While it is unclear how this started, it is likely that the first devils simply took interest in their surroundings. The four categories and some examples include:

Special: Lava, Heat, Steam, Plasma, Storm, Thunder, Sound, Mud
Specialty: Scythe, Blade, Firearm, Sawblade, Machine, Cybernetic, Tools, Ink, Rubber, Flowers, Books, Vehicles, Insects
Irregular: Nature, Chaos, Light, Darkness, Gravity, Fear, Terror, Anger, Thought, Abyss
Primary affinities are basic concepts like elements or objects.
Special affinities require primary affinities to act upon each other.
Specialty affinities require primary and special affinities to act upon each other.
Irregular affinities are nebulous concepts and fundamental forces.
Devils with irregular affinities face a degree of prejudice from other devils. This is because these affinities come off as strange and do not typically jive with the other affinities. The rest can be rationalized. Irregulars are difficult to quantify and explain. Despite their good nature, devils have never been perfect. Still, they have never gone into full on discrimination. Every devil can agree, regardless of their affinity, most humans are excessively irrational in how they deal with adversity.
Some Devils and Necromancers
William Ford II (ULTRAMagic Ignition, formerly ULTRAMagic Shadow) is a necromancer with seven devils partnered with him. They include:
Aalis Crawford is a darkness devil who is good friends with Inkblot. Currently she is known as Aoife Crawford, under the alias of ULTRAMagic Devil.
Xavier Dufort is an earth devil that works for Valentina Pari (Chaos Angel Zozena). He is a good friend of the family and also good friends with Cliff.
Bai’sin is a greater demon who was formerly a spider devil. He had dreams of becoming a member of the goetic demons, but was never able to see it through. Currently he serves on The Infernal Council of Order as the representative for devils.
Mable Acheson is a necromancer who attended The Hermetic Academy of Mages. She is partnered with two devils:

Mable Acheson is a necromancer who attended The Hermetic Academy of Mages. She is partnered with two devils:
- Evan Dunn, a scythe devil known for being a witty wise-guy. Mable is also romantically involved with him.
- Blythe “Witchblade” Finely, a rambunctious blade devil who augments Mable and Evan. They met her while out exploring. Of note is that she is embarrassed of her real full name.
- Brooklyn Langley, a chaotic firearm devil that can turn into akimbo handguns. She has caused Mortis a lot of trouble, but has served him well over the years. Also she loves to call him “Mort,” which he hates.
- Albert Dirks, a calm, firearm devil who specializes in tactics and strategy. He grants Mortis a sniper rifle to work with.
- Hanzou Nagasawa is a dignified blade devil who has served many shogun and samurai in the past. Taro is a unique individual, being incredibly headstrong with great potential. Hanzou has had to clean up after Taro on the regular, but is there for him no matter what. Thanks to Hanzou’s persistence, Taro has considered taking on another devil to augment their strength in recent times.
