Blood-Wraith was a little shaky, but regained his balance. “Voideborne’s holding up, thankfully… argh…”
Dragoslava cracked her knuckles. “Maybe you should take a breather, Blood. Don’t worry, I got this… Where’s Desislav?”
“He’s in the bushes.”
Dragoslava looked around, then returned her attention to the Lich. “Good enough. Can you keep Desislav safe, Blood?”
Blood-Wraith backed up to the bushes. “Sure thing, sister.”
“Alright, Alright!” Dragoslava stretched her limbs a little and cracked her neck. “It’s about time I put these muscles to use.”
After regaining his bearings, the Lich used his good arm to rip a metal spire out of the ground. “DAMN YOU ALL TO ABADDON! You were supposed to be off chasing that foolish beast! Some distraction that was…”
“Oh? Well well well. You hear that Blood? Remember: Loose lips sink ships…”
“IT DOESN’T MATTER!” The Lich slammed the club into the ground, aiming for Dragoslava. “You all will be pulp by the time I'm done with you! Unfit to even be one of my soldiers!!”
Dragoslava had a split second to figure out what to do. Did she stop the club? Or did she go for the leg? She went for the leg. “You know what they say: BREAK A LEG, LICH!” She shouted as she fractured the giant bones.
The Lich roared in anger. “INSOLENT WHELP!” He tried to charge, but was hindered by the injury. “OF COURSE THE HUNTERS HAD TO GIVE BIRTH TO YOU DETESTABLE SPAWN.”
“Well that’s not very… CRAP!” The club was coming her way, forcing Dragoslava to backflip out of the way. Next came a return swing. That arm was becoming a nuisance, so she gambled. As it returned, Dragoslava leapt up and let it hit her. She was betting on her metal body protecting her from the impact, her hope being that the Lich would lose track of her.
“WHAT?! WHERE IS SHE?!”
“Hook! Line! And… SINKER!!” Dragoslava punched the good shoulder so hard that it dislocated the bone, leaving it hanging. Another scream followed. She had to get off quickly, however. The Lich went ballistic, slamming his head into the ground over and over again.
Blood-Wraith saw an opportunity to attack the head again. Just as the Lich was about to do another front slam, he rammed Voidborne into the ground. A surge of metal spikes shot up and stabbed the torso, stopping the wild attacks. “YES! Did you see that, Desislav?!”
“Nice shot, Blood!” Dragoslava complimented as she ran over. “...but we’re not done yet.”
Something emerged from the giant’s corpse. “Well played, nephew…” The Lich’s skull now rested on a bulky, yet gaunt body of bone and muscle.
Dragoslava sighed with a hint of smugness. “Jeez, this guy doesn’t give up, does he?”
“There has to be something…” Blood-Wraith said to himself as the Lich approached. He scanned the area until his eyes settled on the spider’s corpse. “I got an idea! Sister, stall the Lich for me.”
“Can do, Blood!”
Dragoslava decked the Lich hard, leading to them exchanging blows. With this happening, Blood-Wraith set his sights on the spider. His fire turned blue and he flew up to it. A fiery aura enveloped the corpse, pulling it off of the spire it rested on. After going into it, the body crashed to the ground with a thud. It thrashed and writhed as it began to transform. The body became like blue lava with a metal exoskeleton containing it. Any bone became a polished black and six eyes opened up on its face. What the Lich did not expect was a stream of web latching onto his waist, pulling him into an explosive fireball. The spider then jumped to Dragoslava’s side.
“BLOOD?!” Dragoslava exclaimed, stunned by what she had just witnessed. “No freaking way!!”
“You like it? I had no idea if it would work…”
“You. Absolute. Mad lad! Geez, you look so freaking cool too!”
“Bah, insolent children!” The Lich said as he spat… “Where’s the dagger?” It was several feet from him.
Dragoslava noticed this too and ran for it. “Don’t mind if I do…”
Not going to let victory slip away from him, The Lich ripped a chunk of black goo off of himself and threw it at Dragoslava. It encased and constricted her down to her knees, causing her to fall over. As it fully enveloped her, Blood-Wraith leapt up in an attempt to pounce on the Lich. Unfortunately he was able to grab the dagger and jump up into the air before the spider could land. The Lich then sprouted wings from his back and began to fly off. As Blood-Wraith tried in vain to shoot fireballs at him, the Lich caught sight of Leif. The two brothers stared at each other for what felt like an eternity before the dragon roared at him, prompting the Lich to leave.
“Blast! He got away again…” Dragoslava remarked as she hopped over. She was starting to free herself and had managed to expose her head.
“Need help with that?”
“Nope…” She got her hands up to the opening and was able to slip out of the goo.
Blood-Wraith then went over to the bushes and rolled Desislav over to him. “Hanging in there, Desislav?”
“I think I'm arachnophobic now-And you’re not helping at the moment!”
Blood-Wraith laughed. “Sorry.”
Dragoslava made her fingers as sharp as blades to cut her boyfriend out of the nasty goo. She then kissed him. “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere.”
“Sister?” Blood-Wraith interjected. “What even is that black goo…stuff…thing?”
She played with it a little, studying it and seeing what it could do. It then reverted back into a ball. “I’m not sure… What I can say is that it was probably a last resort of sorts.”
“Mysterious…” Blood-Wraith carefully picked up Desislav and set him on his back.
“Uh, Blood? What are you doing?”
“Carrying you back. We don’t know how hurt you are. Hop off and I will cocoon you again.”
The trip back was short as all of them were guided safely to the entrance. Before the three left, the Oasis took the opportunity to clean Desislav off and thanked them for getting rid of the Lich. Dragoslava also took a look at her boyfriend’s injuries while they waited for Leif. The banged up satyr had sustained several gashes, a sprained ankle, a cracked hoof, and a broken wrist. They needed to return home as soon as possible. Fortunately for Desislav, the black goo seemed to recognize his injury and turned into a sling for his arm.
“Glad to see you all are alright…” Leif said as he landed.
Blood-Wraith interrupted him “Leif? I don’t mean to be rude, but I need to level some criticism in the most charitable way possible… WE ALL NEARLY DIED!” He exclaimed in anger.
Leif knew this would happen. “Um, yes, I know. You see…”
“Well I did die for a brief moment,” Dragosava added as she crossed her arms.
“Um, that… uh… It’s just… I… there was…” Leif looked as though he was about to cry, thoroughly disappointed with himself.
“ON TOP OF ALL THAT...” Blood-Wraith was getting a bit emotional.
“ALRIGHT, ENOUGH!” Desislav barked. He felt a little bad, but it was necessary. “Let’s not get too upset at him. Sure, I did not appreciate getting all wrapped up, but we can’t blame Leif for our issues or the shite the Lich pulls. He can only do so much. And are we just going to forget that he found the Deep Unlight map and got us here in time to deal with his troublemaking brother?”
“No…” Blood-Wraith admitted.
“And am I to assume that roar was indicative of the damage you could have done if you had helped us directly?” Desislav inquired.
“Yes…” Leif was barely holding it together.
Dragoslava relaxed and nodded. “To be fair, I wouldn’t have this cool metal skin and Blood wouldn’t have his new fragment had Leif done everything for us. Far be it from me to understand the complexities of the Primordials” she pointed out. “Also I needed to get some frustration out and the Lich made a good punching bag, haha.”
Both of them had valid points and Blood-Wraith felt bad. “I’m sorry, Leif. I didn’t mean to get so heated on you…”
“It’s alright, Blood-Wraith. You're still young. The fact that I can do so little does weigh heavily on me, however. It doesn’t help that this is also my final duty…”
This caught everybody off guard. “Wait, pardon? Leif, you’re not going to leave us, are you?” Blood-Wraith asked.
Leif sighed. “My time is upon me. My brother and I are the last rogue Primordials that need to return to the Ennead. I am… I feel…”
“What Leif is trying to say is that we need to fulfill this duty indirectly and all of it sucks” Tyrant continued. “Our clash with the Lich would create shockwaves that would affect the entire Cosmos. The Unlight wouldn’t notice anything because it would ripple outwards, potentially destroying everything outside of it. Countless universes and multiverses would be devastated. We know we could defeat our brother easily, but at what cost? Plus we are legitimately concerned about you guys.”
“Thank you, Tyrant…”
After a moment to take it all in, Blood-Wraith spoke. “Well then, I guess I’ll just have to keep getting stronger so we can stop the Lich for you. This I swear, Leif!”
Despite it being hard to tell, Leif was smiling. “Thank you, Blood-Wraith. Come, let’s go home.”
Since they all knew the way back, everyone who could do so walked home. It was probably best that Desislav avoided flying for the time being. Since Leif was still feeling bad, Dragoslava started asking him about his past. Talking would make him feel better. The old dragon definitely had a wealth of tales to tell, even revealing he and the Lich were once close. Leif often wished he could go back to the Epoch of the Cosmos. It was a simpler time. Of course Desislav rightfully pointed out that Leif needed to keep moving forward. That was another point to the Colossus.
Back in the city at the Raynot mansion, Kresimira, Corentin, and Tusk were waiting for the four to return. “Oh my goodness!” Kresimira exclaimed. “Desislav, what happened to you?”
“Tusk, help him into the house” Corentin instructed. “I’ll go get my medical supplies and hoof care tools.” They did not even notice that Blood-Wraith was a giant spider.
Dragoslava saw that no one had addressed her nor her skin yet. “Hey, sis. Personally I’m alright. A little roughed up but…”
“Good! Come with me, Drago!” Kresimira dragged her inside.
“Sister!” She complained.
Leif and Blood-Wraith laughed. “Well Blood, looks like you have some free time.”
“Are you feeling better, Leif?”
“Yes. I definitely need to update Proteus and the Colossus, however.”
“Alright then. Best of luck to you.”
Leif rose into the air. “Thank you. See you later, Blood-Wraith.” And with that, he was off again.
Blood-Wraith sighed, feeling a strange euphoria from the silence around him. “Now what shall I do?”
“MR. FIRE!” Auda exclaimed as she landed on him. “Oh wait, you’re Mr. Spider now, hehe…”
“Auda? What are you doing here?”
Auda looked into Blood-Wraith’s eyes and smiled. “Grandpa said I could visit you as long as Uncle Tusk is around.”
“Ah, I see… You’re not getting off of my back, are you?”
“Mush, Mr. Spider!”
Blood-Wraith sighed. Giving her a ride around the neighborhood would not hurt. Auda took this chance to ask so many questions it was not funny. She was curious to know what Mr. Fire had been up to. And she was not disappointed. Hearing about the battle at the Metal Oasis in particular had her on the edge of her seat. Auda had no idea the Lich was so powerful.
“...and that’s how I became a spider and how my sister got her metal skin.”
“Whoa…”
“It was… It was something else” Blood-Wraith remarked. He then reverted back to normal, causing Auda to fall off.
“Ow! Can we go see how Desi is doing?”
“Sure. I hope he’s alright…”
Back at the Raynot mansion, Corentin was taking care of Desislav’s hooves with Kresimira taking notes on the whole event at the oasis. “Hey Blood! Auda,” Desislav greeted.
“Feeling better?” Blood-Wraith asked.
“Yup. All minor injuries aside from my wrist. I mean come on, I ran through a burning building in a war zone once. It’s going to take a lot to do me in.”
Auda went over to watch Corentin work. “Mr. Corentin? Do you work with horsies?”
Corentin smiled. “No, but my father taught me the ropes when I was young. He was a farrier in his youth, which would lead to him eventually becoming a blacksmith.”
“What are you trying to fix?”
“Oh, not much. We patched up his cracked hoof and now I’m just tidying them up. Mind you satyr’s are half goat, which is a bit different from horses. On the bright side, his hooves are wider and bigger than a typical goat’s hoof. Now Desislav, you really need to keep track of your hoof health. We aren’t in your forests any more.”
“I know I know… Ow! Easy there” Desislav replied.
Tusk snuck up behind Blood-Wraith. “Hey, Blood. What's this I hear about you finding another fragment?”
“Tusk! You scared me… um, yeah. My sister gave it to me and now I have a spider form.”
He inspected Blood-Wraith with a strange glowing in his eyes. “I see… I’m not going to lie, I have no idea what is going on. I'm not sure how to train you at the moment…”
“Well you don’t have to worry about it at the moment, because it’s dinner time and big sis is cooking” Dragoslava stated.
Kresimira put down her notepad. “Speaking of which… Desislav, You should be good to go with your injuries. Just don’t do any heavy lifting and go easy on your wrist for the next couple of days.”
“So no adventures then?”
Corentin laughed. “Well obviously. Alright then, your hooves should also be good to go. I don’t think I need to reiterate what’s already been said.”
“Corentin, honey?” Kresimira called out. “Can you come help me?”
“Coming, dear.”
Auda was impressed that Desislav was already standing. “Whoa, did you guys use Alchemy?”
Dragoslava nodded. “Yup, medical Alchemy. Also jeez, dying made me hungrier than a fasting lion after running a marathon.”
Blood-Wraith was a little shaky, but regained his balance. “Voideborne’s holding up, thankfully… argh…”
Dragoslava cracked her knuckles. “Maybe you should take a breather, Blood. Don’t worry, I got this… Where’s Desislav?”
