The trip back to the base went without incident, despite Will feeling like they were being watched for some reason. Lounge AC-1 had been prepared for the group, and it felt like they were home again, despite only spending a month at M.A.I.G. back in September. After Aoife was given her Level 0 Security Card, she was all set to go and could move around the base freely. Barry already had special clearance, and Sam and Will’s clearance had been added to their Liger Brigade clearance given that the Brigade was now a proper part of the military. Aoife loved the lounge as it was nice and cozy, and could not thank Erika and Reynard enough for letting them use it. Upon the couple leaving to return to their business and talk with Jackson and Marcus about what had gone down at Bethany’s crypt (of which Marcus would be talking to Aoife later), Will sat down and had Haze leave him for a moment, leaving him in his underwear…
Aoife gave a slightly nervous chuckle out of concern for her son as he leaned on his leg perched on his other with his face in his hands, clearly cooling off. “Sweetie, isn't it a little chilly in here to be doing that?”
Will softly groaned. “I just need a moment…”
Haze went over to Sam and enveloped her, dressing her in Will’s bodysuit. “Will, if it’s about the pantsing–” he started to say as he raised Sam’s hand up.
“No, I just… It’s fine Haze, I just feel like something’s off at the moment.”
“It’s those dreams, isn’t it?” Barry inquired. He received a grunt of confirmation. “Well you can’t go out there in just your underwear…” As if on cue, Will’s Liger Brigade uniform appeared next to him, cleaned and steamed–Barry figured that Mads had known what was going on and would get Will’s uniform ready.
“It’s Nickie again,” Will started to say as he put his clothes on. “She’s showing up in my dreams and I don’t know why. I’m pretty sure I’m over the birthday incident…”
“Well I’d dare say she’s not allowed to sing at your birthday again, Kiddo,” Aoife commented with a chuckle. Her phone then went off in her hoodie pocket, and she was pleased to see who was texting her. “Oh goodie! Will, would you like to meet my friend?”
“Inkblot?” She nodded in response. “Um, sure…”
A moment after her quick text reply, something spilled out from one of the vents–it looked like shiny ink, and glided over to the group. Emerging from the puddle was what appeared to be a humanoid figure made of ink with a tail that was bulbous at the end, and a slight cowlick on his head. He wiped the ink from his face to reveal indigo skin and smiled. “Hey Aoife, is this him?”
“Yes indeed! Will, I would like you to meet my close friend from all the way back in my iteration, Inkblot Fischer.”
Inkblot held out his hand. “Nice to meet you, Will–your mom says you want to be referred to by your human name at the moment.”
“Nice to meet you too,” he replied, noticing the ink was not rubbing off on him despite how wet Inkblot’s body was. “This is Sam, Haze, and Barry.”
Following the round of greetings, Inkblot took a good look at Will, stroking his chin. “Oh yeah, I think we can make this work–I’m actually your son’s partner. Me and Ignatius go way back, back when he was chasing The Vermilion King all over the Cosmos with the Arbiters.”
Will glanced over to Sam and the two nodded. “Yeah, he’s been telling us about that recently. Thanks for helping him out.”
“No problem–good lord, the amount of times Stephen nearly got him to go to the guild on his own. So Will, I heard you’re an artist?” Will was about to answer, but Inkblot spoke before he could. “Of course you are–we wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. I was an artist once… and it never really went anywhere…”
Aoife put her hands on her hips with a bemused, knowing smile. “Inky, you have to get back into it–your career didn’t take off because you gave up too soon.”
They had had this discussion before, but Inkblot was finally starting to concede to her. “Fine, I’ll give you that things are more favorable for artists at the moment–”
“Inferno or Earth?” Will interjected. “Becuase here you got every Tom, Dick, and Larry wasting their money on chatbots to pump out computer-generated drivel now…”
Inkblot snickered. “Thank you for validating me, Will–good lord, those people want to be seen as artists without actually putting in the hard work. Aren’t those wing-dings supposed to be conservative or some political hoohaa?”
“Yeah, they usually claim they’re ‘right-wing,’ but they more come off as closet liberals if you ask me,” Will answered with unusual confidence, his neck venting subtle, red and black smoke. “You call embracing new technology and societal standards conservative? Please…”
Inkblot laughed. “Earth politics… You guys should see Inferno’s politics sometimes–Rhotomago is always going off on the entire pseudomonarchy, consequences be damned.”
Barry crossed his arms with a nod. “Mm-hm, looking back on it I am so glad my reincarnation put me in The Night Realm. There really is a disconnect between our conflicts and Earth’s usual nonsense, isn’t there?”
“Yeah…” Will agreed. There was a moment of quiet reflection, ending when he cleared his throat. “So, what can you do, Inkblot?”
“Want me to show you?” he asked, perking up. Will nodded, so he turned into a wave of ink that engulfed Will, coating him up to his chin. “Alright, so my magic is ink-based,” he explained as he partially emerged from Will’s left arm. “Go ahead and draw something.”
Will seemed a little confused as he looked down at his hands, which were a little bigger now. “Uh, where?”
“Anywhere.”
“Don’t worry, sweetie, he won’t stain anything,” Aoife reassured him.
Will thought about it and sat back down, doodling a butterfly with his finger on the coffee table. Nothing happened for a moment, but then the drawing emerged from the table and started flapping around the room to the group’s amazement, coming to land on Will’s finger. “Oh wow, neat…”
“Incredible,” Sam concluded. “So Boyo can just draw stuff and it comes to life?”
“Yup,” Inkblot replied with pride. “Erm, within reason. We can’t get too complex, as I can only handle so much, but yeah–if he can think it, it will come to life or to be.”
Will then gently closed his hands around the butterfly, causing it to be reabsorbed into him. He then started doodling a little man. “Can we do different colors?”
“Sorry, but you get what you pay for, kid,” Inkblot replied like he had been asked that before.
“Hehe, apologies…” Once Will was finished, the man emerged and started to walk around spouting gibberish, but quickly melted into ink. “Shoot…”
“Yeah, that might be a little too complex for me...”
Haze was also thoroughly impressed, starting to really like the creativity of Inkblot’s magic. “Well that looks really easy to work around–nothing against Mayhem, but good lord magic his magic is something else, let me tell you–”
“Actually, Haze, can Will and I get to know each other first?” Inkblot interrupted. “I’ve been told about you and, well… I feel like I need to get a feel for how Will works before you enter the scene, if that’s okay with you…”
Haze felt a little rejected, as he was certain that if he was compatible with Will then Inkblot was a shoe-in. He glanced up at Sam, who gave him a reassuring nod. “Alright then, you have a good point.”
“Thanks, Haze,” Will said as he stood up, with Inkblot demerging from him.
“Besides, I’ve been wanting to take you for a spin for a while now,” Sam put in. “We’ll have fun!” Haze smiled and put Sam’s hand down, returning full control to her.
Aoife then went and put her hand on Will’s shoulder. “Kiddo, since I’m a darkness devil and your mom, you’re more than welcome to call on me and my powers.”
“Thanks,” he replied, followed by a stretch. His communicator then went off. “Ford speaking… Mm-hm… yeah, we can come down, we’re not doing anything too important, ha… thank you, Colonel, sir.” He then went to the doors, which indicated for everyone to follow him. “Alright, back to The War Room, Marcus wants to talk to us.”
The talk was nothing special, just Marcus confirming what had happened and getting a grasp on what Aoife was up to. Had things been as hectic as when Sebastian attacked he would have been not in the mood, but that was then and this was now. Given that Aoife was clearly quite capable and a member of The ULTRAMagic Guild, he was willing to allow her to tag along. Reynard invited the group to his quarters for dinner that night, feeling in the mood for barbecued pork steaks, corn on the cob, and salt potatoes. He had nights where he just wanted to go all out and make a big dinner. Jackson was present, and he brought Elaine and Leonardo along, who were happy to see Will and the group. Reynard would have to make more food, which required Erika’s assistance, but it was no skin off of his bones.
The scent of the dinner quickly filled the room and it certainly got the mouths of Reynard’s guests watering. He often joked that if M.A.I.G. ever went under he would start a cooking show, and everyone could easily see him being successful at it. Jackson was in the mood for some southern rock while they ate, so he went over to Reynard’s laptop and set the music to a reasonable volume over the speakers around the dwelling. Reynard certainly had some interesting things to talk about that night, as he and Erika were in the process of having their honors as The Sulfur and Mercury of Old returned to them for all of the hard work they had put into the conflict between The League and The Lost Darkness God. Everyone was glad to hear it, and one of the biggest surprises came from Barry as he explained how The Sepulcher God was actually a big push for the redemption–Sepulcher firmly believed that Erika and Reynard were trail blazers, and Anton agreed with him. And it certainly helped that Hermes was present at that meeting to advocate for his parents.
Hearing the wonderful news put Will’s mind at ease that night, and he was able to sleep peacefully… despite Nickie showing up in his dreams again–thankfully Bethany was also there to keep her in line. The next day, Will, Sam, Barry, and Aoife were to head out to Bellanger Park where they would meet with Satsuki. Jackson offered to drive them, but Will insisted on using his void magic, to Marcus’ chagrin–a trip over to the park was not that big of a deal, even if trouble showed up. It was a nice day and the park was beautiful and lush as always. Looking around, Will could see that the city had recovered nicely from the battles of September. Truthfully it was like it had never happened in the first place. It was great to see and gave Will and Sam a sense of victory they had truly earned. Walking down the park sidewalk, they spotted Satsuki waiting on one of the park benches, listening to some music on his phone.
“Hey, Satsuki!” Will called out as they drew near.
Pulling his IEMs out of his ears, he glanced over and smiled. “Konnichiwa, Will-san! Good day, everyone! The good news is that I got a beat on Jun. Nobu on the other hand… that’s a little more tricky.”
Will sighed as he looked around with his hands on his hips. “Yeah… Oh, Satsuki, you’ve met my other mom, right?”
“Aoife-san? Yup, hello, Aoife!”
“Good to see you, Satsuki,” she replied, shaking his hand. “Alright, where’s the troublemaker?”
“He’s close… Will, why aren’t you wearing Haze?”
“Inkblot wants to get to know Will first,” Haze answered from Sam’s hand.
“Yeah, speaking of which…” Will said, then whistled with his fingers.
The puddle of ink appeared out of nowhere gliding up to the group. “Ready to go, Will–so are you the good cop or the bad cop?” This warranted laughter from the group.
“A pleasure to meet you, Inkblot,” Satsuki warmly greeted as he shook his hand.
Of course the feeling Will was being watched came back to him, with him stepping away from the group. “You know, I really want to hang out with Jun–he seems like a cool guy from what I’ve heard about him before the 2020 nonsense.”
“Hai,” Satsuki said with a nod. “He’d get along well with you and Liam.”
Will’s lurking feeling was guiding him to say a particular set of words as he reached for something in his pocket as his neck vented yellowish-orange smoke. “Given the tag team me and Sam were back in September, you’d think he’d be up for working with us and… HYAH!” Will cried as he shot his head up in the air, narrowly dodging a bullet of red light that appeared as a glowing ‘X’ as it embedded in the ground. “YAHH!” he further exclaimed as his arm turned into the leg of Azure Spider, blocking and dissipating the next red X.
Everyone had scrambled and prepared to fight back, but Sam was distracted by Will’s feat. “Boyo, is that a partial transformation?!”
His other arm turned into a tarantula leg, and he gave her the equivalent of finger guns with a smile. “I’m getting better at it, haha!”
“Well hot damn, that’s impressive!” a sassy and impressed female’s voice said. “If that’s what the hero of Red River is packing, then you’ll make a fantastic rival!”
“Rival?!” Will was not sure what he was hearing, but it made him laugh. “What, do you think this is an anime or something?”
The woman clapped, signaling for the group to look up towards a tree. She was standing on a platform made of magical light, wearing a segmented metal suit with an ‘X’ motif on her chest and face. “The name’s X-Pen, Specialist Ford, and I am here to test your mettle–really see if you’re all that’s cracked up to be or if you’re going to be yesterday’s news!” There was something off about X-Pen, like she had written a script for a video and had been practicing it.
“I see… and now I’m taking you into custody!” Will said with a flick of his arm, slinging a stream of webbing around her torso.
“Uh-oh…” with a hard yank, X-Pen was jolted violently towards the group, spinning around in more and more webbing, on the way to being fully cocooned until an electrified combat knife flew through the silk stream, cutting it and causing X-Pen to fall to the ground. “OW, DETHBLADE! OW!” she complained as she wobbled around on the ground, her upper body fully webbed up.
“Shimatta…” a man’s voice muffled by a mask apologized as he came hurrying over to her, causing the group to back up. “Specialist Ford, it’s been a while,” he said with a tone of familiarity and judgement.
