UMAE 2026 - Gudrun Holzknecht

Hey, how about I actually draw one of the villains of ULTRAMagic Alternate for once? Why did I draw The Lich of Old considering Gudrun doesn't show up in person until ULTRAMagic Babel? Eh, Gudrun's getting time to shine in the lore at the moment?

Gudrun Holzknecht is an infamous member of The Eternal Order amongst many, and one who has left a trail of scheming and villainy throughout the Cosmos and beyond. A master of deception, mad science, and self-interest, she is actually an incredibly powerful dragon capable of breathing molten gold for fire, can switch between dragon and human form, and has an incredible intellect and unparalleled charisma. Her origin seems to stem from Universe-23-1, where she was a royal scientist for a king who did not persist to the next iteration. While seemingly an upstanding if-awkward individual with a troubled past, Gudrun had found herself enthralled with a lust for power after her experiments shattered the Eldritch Barrier for her. Shackled by the chains of guilt from a past failed experiment, she gave into temptation and desired to join The Eternal Order... but lacked the power to do so at the time.

Gudrun would be aided by a miracle in the form of a psychopathic, soul-devouring monster that would take the form of a young girl, who would become Bethany Briggs in the next iteration. Bethany back then was maddened by her death from so long ago, and ravaged a city that would become Red River City during the next iteration. Gudrun saw a great research opportunity and secretly made a deal with Bethany where she would leak secrets to her in return for being Gudrun's test subject. Bethany would wreak havoc on the incompetent city while Gudrun slowly began to understand how the soul and ULTRAMagic worked, but her plans were halted briefly when William Ford II of all people showed up out out of the blue and started working towards achieving ULTRAMagic for some reason. Gudrun was baffled, but she believed it may have been the next iteration of Universe-23 influencing the past.

Eventually Bethany was defeated, but the heroes were left baffled as to how she was able to get the leg up on them so many times... and then it clicked: Gudrun. Going to confront the corrupted scientist, she set her laboratory into overdrive, which created a black hole just for her that would jettison her into the next iteration. After waving goodbye with a cheeky smile, she quickly realized something had gone wrong. The black hole and its subsequent worm hole was not sending her to the next iteration, but back to the Epoch of the Cosmos itself. While not ideal, she could make it work. As she was flung through space and time, the latent energies of the Cosmos mutating her into a mighty dragon, at the cost of driving her insane for a while. Nearing the end of her voyage, she regained cognizance and realized her plots and schemes would be found out through traces of her iteration manifesting as an… AU ("alternate universe") for an indie video game?

Acting quickly, she used her newfound magic to manipulate Universe-23 to erase all traces of her scheming from the AU fan series, and made it "bad and cringe." She loaded it with plot holes, contrivances, time travel bullshit, Mary Sue's, inconsistent characterization, lazy story writing, and unfinished plot lines. The creator of the fan series even found herself in consistent controversies due to harassing other creatives and employing miscreants, which served to hide Gudrun's actions even further. Strangely a fanfiction of this AU would also pop up detailing Will's side of things, but all Gudrun had to do was ignore it, as someone how the author completely forgot to include her, and the story was incredibly bad and would not have gained any traction. Gudrun would finally end up in the Epoch, but not without catching the attention of The Reality Walkers, The Multiverse Patrol, and The Dark Divers Guild, despite them not having come into existence yet. The Epoch was the era of the gods and the primordials, so Gudrun would have to lay low while she secretly sought out The Eternal Order. The Sepulcher God would not let her join until she proved herself, which would eventually lead to her corrupting The Thundering Order of ancient Feuerland...

Gudrun's life became a winding and complex tale of secrecy, mad science, deception, betrayal, and villainous scheming as she delved deeper and deeper into the depths of eldritch knowledge to satisfy a thirst for power that would never be quenched. Her biggest breakthrough was learning curses, or at least a bastardized version of the famous magic of Ermenrich Denzell, The Hexer of Old. She became vastly more powerful as cause & effect was now her plaything, albeit she chose not to use the magic willy-nilly. Notably following the repeated failure of Karnage and whatever goons he roped into his schemes, Gudrun found herself drifting more and more towards The Running God, who had a more pragmatic vision for The Eternal Order. It has even reached the point where Gudrun has recalled some of her old humanity, and has realized that working with The League may be in The Eternal Order's best interest. Interestingly The Multiverse Patrol has been less likely to go after her in recent times given that she seems to becoming less chaotic, which may be owed to a reevaluation her priorities, the ever escalating nature of the conflict with The Lost Darkness God, and Volf Blitz talking some sense into her in line with his vision for The Eternal Order… the fact that they are in a romantic relationship with each other also certainly helps with this.

Why did I lore dump? You'll see soon, probably tomorrow. Also gee, I wonder what shitty fanfiction that went nowhere Gudrun completely ignored... hmm...

And if you want to learn more about Gudrun, I suggest reading the Lore Entries. Also she appears in ULTRAMagic Babel.
