The next four days saw a lull in activity, with Damien going eerily quiet. This was no cause for celebration, as Scotty was certain that Damien was planning something and even spoke with the other Azoth Mages to validate his suspicions. And Scotty was proven right when word had come in from The Highway Knight that he had spotted Damien at The Forsaken Labyrinth, which stood at the border between the Dark Void and the True Abyss. The Highway Knight had engaged Damien as the miscreant was attempting to find a portal to Universe-23 and had located the gateway in question, but thankfully Leif, Mind-Wraith, and Aava had shown up just in the nick of time. Another great fight ensued between the Audoan Knight and the members of the Dark Divers Guild, but this time Damien would not be given a chance to escape.
Weapons clashed and magic blasted back and forth within the obsidian and ashen halls of the great labyrinth, with The Highway Knight tipping the odds in favor of Leif. That was not going to stop Damien from going for the portal, however. The iron-clad, stone guardians could only do so much against Damien’s treacherous fervor against his former master and it looked like he was going to get what he wanted. In a moment of his old reckless side from the Epoch returning, Leif destroyed the portal with a mighty roar. This caused Damien to lose his mind as failure shackled its latest victim. Audoin was going to destroy the Cosmos if left unchecked and that was one of his last chances to save everyone. Enraptured by his perverted sense of heroism, Damien gave into his emotions and the foul power imbued within him went wild.
Barreling out of the ancient structure was a giant beast abhorrent as it was ferocious. It towered over any mere man and its arms were like tree trunks that ended in hideous hands whose nails were as sharp as blades. The fur that covered its hide was like shredded cloth blowing in the wind and his head was somewhere between a crazed wolf and a bloodthirsty bear. Damien had become a wretched abomination and was moving as fast as he could towards the Dark Divers Guild. He had to find The Crimson God and warn him of Audoin’s seeming disregard for The Eternal Order. The guild went into high alert once they received the warning that Damien was heading right for the castle, triggering a rare code red for the guild (which was normally reserved for the just as rare IGL-based anomalies). Scotty and Zara were the first ones to step outside the gates to confront Damien, with Blood-Wraith and the others watching from the safety of the walls.
Damien saw the Azoth Mage and planned to get rid of him once and for all with the flick of a wrist, but was taken by surprise when Scotty stomped his foot on the ground, causing a mighty forest to rise up. The verdant bulwark could only hold off the rampaging beast for so long, but Scotty seemingly had a plan in mind while he and Zara waited for Leif and the others. “You got a lot of nerve showing up here, Damien…” Scotty growled.
“OUT OF MY WAY, WASTREL!!!” Damien roared as he began slamming into trees to knock them over. “YOU WILL NOT GET IN MY WAY OF SAVING THE COSMOS!”
Zara laughed in his face as she prepared her swords. “HA, he wants to save us despite insulting us! This execution is going to be grand…”
“Forgive me…” Scotty said to the forest, being misinterpreted by both Damien and Zara. Scotty then snapped his fingers, causing a lighting bolt to strike one of the biggest trees, setting it ablaze and quickly lighting the forest on fire. The green tranquility quickly turned into raging inferno, whose smoke stung the lungs and felt the closest thing to hell for Damien. “Does this seem familiar to you, Damien?” Scotty asked as he drew his sword. “It’s just like when you and Macarius tried to kill Adela. Don’t think I’ve forgotten that day,” he declared as he pointed the sword right at Damien.
Damien was somewhere between lucidity and madness, but that memory was as clear as could be. “YOU THINK THIS IS A GAME?! AUDOIN WILL DESTROY US ALL! NOW GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!” That demand extended into a roar, but Scotty and Zara stood their ground without even a flinch.
“Good news, Scotty: Damien’s death warrant just came in,” Zara proclaimed as she stuck her swords in the flames, and then sharpened them on each other as the flames that clung to them turned dark red. “Want me to put him down once and for all?”
“WE’LL DO IT TOGETHER," Scotty cried with vengeance in his voice as he charged forward.
A portion of those who had gathered to watch the battle feared for Scotty and Zara fighting in such unforgiving conditions, but in truth Scotty had experienced way worse during the Audoan Wars. His lungs stung and eyes burned as much as anyone else, but Scotty was out for revenge for what Audoin had done to his Earth. As a great beast Damien was fearsome and relied more on brute strength than his standard magic. Scotty and Zara had to be nimble if they wanted to stand any chance against the frenzied slashes and fist slams. Zara had the most luck, giving Damien a good hit whenever he failed to keep an eye on her, the dark flames from her blades searing him. As beautiful as she was, that beauty was matched by her lethality in battle as she whirled and twirled her swords around with the grace of an executioner having a field day elegantly ending the lives of traitors to the kingdom.
In regards to how Scotty was doing, he had never used a sword before, but that was not going to stop him now. With a breath and a strange instinct he never knew he had, Scotty activated the sword with a hard swish and the blade was engulfed in a bigger blade made of lightning. He then charged at Damien feeling like the power of his weapon was protecting him and imbuing him with the strength to defeat his foe. And Damien was certainly caught off guard as the electricity repeatedly shocked him. He tried to swipe Scotty away, but this only resulted in more shocks and burns from the swords assaulting him. This sorry excuse for a dance dragged on until finally Leif and the others began drawing close to the battle. It was in that moment, when Damien sensed the four’s arrival, a feeling of fathomless despair finally overwhelmed him.
Damien had realized the full gravity of all the evil acts he had committed over the years. The lives he had ruined, the tyranny he furthered, and the worlds he had forsaken had all come back to haunt him. He was the monster he was claiming to fight against. Amidst the chaos of the battle, Damien caught a glimpse of the young boy he had been seeking with mania pushing him forward. Blood-Wraith was watching from afar and Damien realized the truth. Whoever brought Blood-Wraith into being did not do it for him, it was for the sake of the Cosmos. Blood-Wraith was the true hero and all Damien was was a violent madman. In his final moments the wave of sorrow he felt was so great that he desired for his life to end right then and there…
“Blood-Wraith… I’m so sorry…” he croaked out, and it was the last thing he would ever say. Leif had sliced his head off with a swift swing of the halberd.
“FINALLY…” Leif grunted as he tried to catch his breath, the lumbering body of his enemy falling to the ground with a crashing thud.
As Leif went to acquire the magic he needed before it could return to its source, Scotty dropped his blade and just stood there quietly as the forest fire burned out with his waning anger. He then went over to Damien’s head, which was fading into dust and knelt beside it. “Make the right choice next time, Damien. I know you can…”
Zara, covered in dirt and soot, sheathed her blades and went over to Scotty. “Are… are you going to be okay?”
“I’ll be fine, but the war is far from over…”
“Scotty!” Mind-Wraith called out as he and Aava hurried over. “Are you two okay?! Is Blood safe?!”
Scotty chuckled as he stood up, brushing his pants off. “Don’t worry, everyone’s fine. We didn’t let ol’Damien set a single foot within the walls.”
Aava was relieved, but began to worry again when she saw Leif working to purify the magic. “Do you require any assistance, Leif?”
Golden light had engulfed Leif as he triumphantly laughed with each portion of the red energy that became tamed by him. He then brought his hands together one final time to squeeze everything into a perfect crystal and… “HAHA, I’VE DONE IT! WE’RE SAVED! EVERYONE’S SAVED!” he cried with tears of joy running down his face as he danced around with the ball-sized crystal, waving it around like a trophy.
“Well it was a bit of a Hail Mary, but I think we can finally rest easy,” The Highway Knight noted with a laugh. “Well done, Leif.”
The bliss Leif felt in that moment, like one of the biggest weights had been lifted from his chest, delayed his response. “Sorry, Knight, thank you. It’s just… so much was riding on this,” he said as he held up the crystal to him.
“I know how you feel, friend. Come, let’s go give Blood-Wraith his magic.”
The entire guild had gathered in the courtyard, and gave Blood-Wraith and Nosmirc space as they waited for Leif and the others. Blood-Wraith saw the hauntingly beautiful crystal and immediately grew nervous. He had heard Damien’s last words and for some reason felt compelled to forgive him. Would they meet again in the future? Only time would tell in that regard. “Leif, is that…?” the boy inquired.
“It is, Blood,” he answered. “Blood-Wraith, I need you to do me a favor. This was once the magic of The Behemoth God, someone who turned his back on God. This power committed acts of great evil and irreverence, but now we have the chance to make a difference. Blood, take this magic and fight for love, light, and the Source. Fight for those that The Behemoth God oppressed and trampled over. This will be your sword against the forces of evil, and it will always be there for you, in the darkest night and the bleakest storm. My time is coming to an end and I couldn’t finish the fight, but I believe in you. You have great potential and I need you to pick up where I left off. Can… Can you do that for me?” Leif had become a bit choked up by the end, as he was asking a lot. He also knew what was coming next, which hurt as he had grown attached to Blood-Wraith.
Blood-Wraith started to reach for the crystal as Leif held it there, but was still nervous. He glanced up at Nosmirc, who had a smile on his face. “Am… am I ready for this?”
Nosmirc nodded. “Go for it, Blood. It was always meant to be.”
That told Blood-Wraith a great deal about Nosmirc, and for a brief second he saw who he truly was and understood why he had gone out of his way to help out. “Alright, I accept, Leif.” Blood-Wraith took the crystal and it dissolved into a soft, flame-like substance that eagerly flowed into his body. He then hovered into the air for a brief moment and ignited in a blaze of red flame before settling back down to the ground. When he came to, Blood-Wraith saw that his flames were fully visible, and that his body had turned gray. “Huh, why did I change colors like that?”
Scotty laughed as he picked Blood-Wraith up and sat him on his shoulders. “LET’S HERE FOR BLOOD-WRAITH AND LEIF!” There was then an explosion of applause and cheers, which made the whole group feel truly victorious.
Leif had turned a little red in the face as he laughed himself. “Guys, please…”
“Good show, Leif!” Erikson congratulated as he shook his hand. “Good show!”
“Don’t forget Nosmirc, guys!” Blood-Wraith called out over the celebrations.
“Aw, it was nothing really,” Nosmirc said as he received handshakes, hugs, and gratitude.
Once things had settled down enough, The Automaton made an announcement. “What are we hanging around out here for? This calls for a celebration!” Everyone filed back into the guild hall, save for Blood-Wraith and the group. They needed a moment to take it all in.
Glancing out to the charred remains of the forest Scotty had called forth, Blood-Wraith went out to the edge of it with the others following him. “Oh my goodness… Scotty, you really did all of this?”
He sighed as he patted Blood-Wraith’s shoulder. “Indeed, Blood…”
“You created a forest and destroyed it… is that kind of power inside me?”
“Aye, Blood.”
“I won’t lose control, will I? What if I do?”
Nosmirc walked over and looked out at the great fields of ash and burnt trees. “The only ones who lose control are the ones who never had it to begin with, Blood.” There was more to those words than what initially seemed to be, and it prompted a quiet moment of reflection as they thought of Damien and everything that had led up to their current circumstances.
“Well said, Nosmirc,” The Metal God complimented.
Blood-Wraith still looked a little uneasy, but then Scotty noticed something sprouting up from the ash. Something green… “Blood, take a looksie right here! See that? That’s a sapling. It’s growing in the soil fertilized by the ash… although it’s growing a little faster than it does on Earth, I’ll tell you what.” This warranted a round of chuckles.
“It’s the circle of life–the cycle of the Cosmos, Blood,” Mind-Wraith added. “When something ends, another begins, and even the most desolate and destroyed land can return to life eventually. As long as you keep fighting the good fight, evil will never triumph no matter how strong it is.”
“And no matter what happens you will be able to call on the people close to you for help,” Aava put in. “Even if you lose control, there will be those ready to help you get back to the right path. Never forget that.”
Leif nodded and gave a frustrated sigh. “We’re heading into uncertain times, Blood. The risks are great, but sadly we’re not going to have much time to rest and catch our bearings. Evil never sleeps and will take advantage of you the minute you’re not looking. But much like nature here, we never give up, and we never surrender. Even in my twilight years I’m still full of fight and I refuse to let that awful Behemoth God get the better of me…”
Erikson laughed and patted him on the back. “Alright, hero, we get it. Seriously, Blood, when he gets going on his speeches, he gets going.”
Blood-Wraith laughed, but also felt bad for Leif. “Don’t worry, Leif, I won’t give up… Um, can you go give that axe to Mal now? It sounds like she needs the help too…”
Zara cleared her throat as she tapped Leif on the arm. “MM-HMM, get moving, Mr. Dragon of Old!” This made everyone laugh.
“Alright, alright. I’ll be back in time for the celebrations…” Leif said as he got a running start and took off in his majestic dragon form.
