- - How did Will become Shadow? - -
It all has to do with a battle within Antares' family. Captain Antares of the Liger Brigade is a member of the Briggs family, well known for their mages. This lineage of these savant mages goes all the way back to the 15th century. What requires our attention is the 1700s. During the early 18th century, there was great turmoil for mages across the United States given that people were not exactly welcoming of magic back then. The Briggs family was able to hide their magic, but some were not so lucky. One such individual was a self-professed witch named Bethony Briggs. She was caught, tried as a witch, and burned at the stake. She would be buried in an unmarked grave and faded into the sands of time...
Until she was exhumed at some point between the late 18th century and the 20th century. What the Liger Brigade and M.A.I.G. know is that a coven of warlocks and traitors dug up her corpse at some point and resurrected her. Bethony would resurface in Maine in the 1960s and would be sealed away by Ellen, Amadeus Briggs (Antares' grandfather), and a young Zoltan Dracul in 1966. This event would be classified by both the brigade and M.A.I.G. To cut a long story short, the seal keeping Bethony dormant was broken in 2024 by accident. Antares had to take up the mantle and combat his ancestor as his grandfather had long since passed away.
Originally Antares, Trumna, and Zoltan planned to stop Bethony once and for all. What they did not expect was Will and company showing up. This made things a little more complicated, but Antares felt more confident having one of his best friends supporting him. Things quickly turned into a mess with the city Bethony decided to attack needing to be partially evacuated, magic anomalies popping up everywhere, and the witch in question having refined her magic since the 60s. What Antares did not expect was Will achieving ULTRAMagic at the tail end of the battle. While Will did not win the battle himself, this did tip the scales in their favor.
- - The return of ULTRAMagic Shadow - -
Will was not the first to have the title of ULTRAMagic Shadow. The original was Aoife Crawford. Upon entering the Unlight after her great battle, she gave up the title. Eventually she would become ULTRAMagic Devil, leaving her old title open. The inheritor would be Will, becoming the new Shadow. Aoife was thrilled, but also nearly had a heart attack when she found out Will had become ULTRAMagic Shadow. Her and Infinity would promptly go fetch Will and bring him to the ULTRAMagic Guild for introductions and the beginning of his training.
The reason why the suit does not exactly fit Will is because it was originally Aoife's and that is the original form of the suit. It obviously adjusted to fit Will better, originally having heels and exposed skin. It also looked more feminine when Aoife wore the suit. Now as for Will's training, he began learning Soul and Weave magic. Eventually he plans to move onto Aura thanks to Aoife and another childhood friend, but he lacks the discipline for Aura at the moment. Something else of note is that the suit gives Will slightly more enhanced physical attributes than a typical ULTRAMagic transformation would give. This seems to be Aoife's ambient influence on Shadow.
Will and ULTRAMagic Ex are currently the two newest recruits into the ULTRAMagic guild and they have been welcomed with open arms. Ex shows a lot of potential and Will actually has a bit of a legacy and reputation preceding him, believe it or not. Given the recent events in the Unlight, Aoife seems to be a bit protective of Will. She normally keeps an eye on guild members, but this appears to be amplified with Will. Strange indeed...

And there we go, I got Shadow updated for 2023. Yes, I am playing with how I draw hair and shading. I really need to do some lore posts on the Liger Brigade and M.A.I.G. I was considering doing a latex variant for shits and giggles, but that would have more effort than I was willing to put in today. It's not off the table, just not right now. It is canon by the way, as ULTRAMagic mages can alter the properties of their uniforms.
I think this looks a lot better than the first drawing. Now I just need to start practicing and learning how to draw more dynamic drawings. Then we'll really be cooking with gas... Will I never not suck at art? Only time will tell. The design hasn't really changed, just how I color it.
