Randalph Theoprastus Scarfe is a Goatman from Limbo, a region of Purgatory. What is Purgatory though? Purgatory is the realm intended to embody order, allowing those who are confused and lost to be able to clear their mind and think. The realm is in order, meaning it will never become subject to entropy. Despite this, the realm is dynamic and ever changing. One cannot exist within Purgatory as a living being, so they must seek out the region known as Limbo if they wish to explore Purgatory. Despite how impossible it seems, life exists within Limbo. Many unique, intelligent species have arisen and live all over Limbo.
Something to note here is that Purgatory and Limbo are very similar to the Unlight. It is also easy to get the Unlight from Purgatory, more so than the other realms.
Randalph's tribe are a group of magic inclined scholars. Their homeland is always on the move, making them nomadic. Their entire city is a marvel of eldritch and arcane engineering and keeps them safe from the chaos of Limbo. Randalph was living a typical life up until he was introduced to Alchemy and Necromancy. From this point on, he became obsessed with learning about magic. During his school days, a strange creature would hop on to the moving city. This blob was discovered and was to be exterminated, but Randalph's father Randall Scarfe stepped in and adopted the creature... A strange decision, but Randall seemed to sense potential in it. This organism would receive the name Grendel Bombastus Scarfe.
Randalph was a bit nervous at first, but Grendel seemed to be very friendly. After some warming up, Randalph would accept Grendel as his brother. The Scarfe's would discover that Grendel was a colonial organism with assimilative cells... but his cells seemed to be passive rather than aggressive. Truly a marvel and an oddity of Limbo to behold. Randalph would end up becoming very protective of his brother, making sure he stayed safe. In regards to Grendel's cells, he is not allowed to enter the universe. While he is passive, he is still considered a threat to standard life.
- - The Unlight - -
Eventually Randalph would create a Philosopher's stone, becoming a master Alchemist. Prior to that, he had been dabbling in Necromancy. His partner at the time was the fire devil, Faustus. While Randalph would ultimately stick to Alchemy, he would still keep in touch with Faustus. Jumping back to his mastery, he would place his stone in an ebony staff and depart from his homeland. He had an urge to discover and learn things beyond Limbo. The first realm he would explore was the Unlight... He promptly got into trouble after stumbling into a monstrous aberration. Fortunately a helpful figure calling himself Reaper would come in to assist him.
ULTRAMagic Reaper (as he would reveal himself to be) just so happened to be passing by when he noticed a Philosopher's stone enter the Unlight. He would ask Randalph to demonstrate his skill and technique, so he could gauge how good the Alchemist was. Reaper was impressed and invited him to visit the ULTRAMagic Guild. Randalph was utterly amazed by the guild. Just who were all these mages that had managed to become so powerful? And ULTRAMagic! What an amazing concept! Two members, Devil and Infinity, would take interest in Randalph... especially Infinity. The two would keep the goatman around and bring him along on missions. Due to his exceptional performance, Randalph would be named an honorary member of the guild.
Randalph would also meet a wanderer going by the name of Ellen the Wayward. She was exploring the Unlight and Randalph was more than happy to explore with her. This also allowed him to meet the arcane scientist Valentina Pari.
- - Heading to Earth - -
Randalph would learn a great deal about the Unlight, but something would catch his interest: Infinity's magic. He was using what was called Soul Magic and this intrigued Randalph. Soul Magic bypassed the refinement of Prima Materia and used gravity pushing particles around to facilitate magic. It was a complete insult to Alchemy, but also showed great potential as a school of magic. Infinity would point Randalph in the direction of Earth, as it was popular there. Earth was a fascinating place... primitive to the enth degree, but fascinating nonetheless.
One of his noteworthy early encounters was in the 1920s. He would stumble across a man bleeding out from a gunshot wound. This man coughed out that he had been shot and begged for help. Randalph was not dumb as he could tell this was a mobster... but he could not just leave the poor guy there! Yes, this was a criminal... but if his father was willing to give his brother a chance, he would give this man a chance. Using his philosopher's stone, he would heal the man and even used the bullet as material for the transmutation. Of course the mobster's fellows were coming, so Randalph had to book it. He would always remember the man and had a feeling he would meet him in the future.
During his studies, Randalph became quite adept at Soul Magic and even discovered something odd: Dark Magic. Dark Magic was another type of Soul magic that used antigravity to push particles into place. It was quite fascinating and caused him to respect Soul Magic. And then at some point at around 2021 on Earth, his old friend Faustus would give him a call. The fire devil had found a new partner and wanted Randalph to swing by and maybe share some of his knowledge on magic. Randalph thought about it and figured it would be a harmless little excursion. Little did Randalph realize he would meet a group of people that would become his best friends. He even ran into the mobster he had healed a hundred years prior. His name? Antonio Pari.
As a quick aside, Antonio's human body never decayed. It is still out there, lying lifeless.
- - In regards to Randalph - -
Randalph is a nerd... Scholar. He is very studious and organized, wanting to know all that he can. He is also a gentleman, being courteous and respectful. Something he also likes is teaching and helping people with their studies. You are more than welcome to peruse his tomes, scrolls, and portfolios... just make sure everything is back where it is supposed to be when you are done. He is very protective of his friends and family, instilled in him by his parents. Life is fleeting and reality is dangerous. Something that drives Randalph up a wall is when people do something he told them not to do. He also does not like it when you leave stuff all over the place and do not organize it. He has had to get Will's case multiple times over him leaving his grimoires all over his room. Randalph also can become conflicted if he is faced with a difficult choice. His conscience kicks in and he will weigh his options. Our choices have ramifications no matter what, and he is fully aware of that.
Let's talk about Goatmen real quickly. This is a species of intelligent, humanoid goats... you get what is described. Many unique species like this pop up all the time in Limbo and even the Unlight. Goatman/Goatmen is gender neutral, much like how Human refers to all Homo Sapiens. Goatmen are also biologically compatible with many humanoid species, including humans.
Lastly, let us discuss Randalph's magic real quickly. His Philosopher's Stone is his main means of casting magic. Trying to steal causes it to retaliate and it will always return to Randalph. It will also react violently if someone with a black heart tries to take or use it. Randalph is an exceptionally powerful Alchemist, knowing how to work Prima Materia into whatever he needs. Of course he does need to be rested, focused, and energized to cast magic. He has neglected his necromancy a tad, but he still knows the basics. His Soul magic is quite something, beginning to rival that of his Alchemy. He prefers to use his Soul magic to create magical constructs such as swords, hammers, and tools. With his dark magic, he casts projectiles such as orbs, missiles, and beams. One of his favorite dark magic techniques is Roaring Laser, a massive and powerful beam of dark magic that can level entire buildings.

I have drawn Randalph before, but that old drawing was not good. Visually he was based off of Asriel Dreemurr and Ralsei. For this new design, I actually looked at images of goats... and the rest came naturally. The whole notion of his fur turning dark due to his magic studies is no longer canon, his fur was always dark, like you see in the drawing. As for where he has shown up recently aside from ULTRAMagic Alternate? Floralia Alternate... The two counterparts are not too different from each other... aside from the fact that Randalph 2021 has not met the ULTRAMagic Guild yet. And also Randalph featured heavily in GTALT.
Grendel has actually been a concept I have been sitting on for a while believe it or not. I think I have had him since 2017? If not that, then definitely 2018. Originally he was a peaceful hive mind, but I dialed that back to a colonial organism with assimilative cells.
I want to note that Randalph is one of my strongest characters that isn't a demon, angel, Archangel, or higher dimensional.
Coloring this simple, it just took forever because I started late and there were two characters to work on...(sigh). I like this design for Randalph way better than the original. You can definitely expect more of him soon. Also JEEZ, I really need to finish the main cast. Sam, Buster, Kyu, and Olivia still do not have their own profiles.
