UMAE 2023 - Cliff and Will

- - Who is Cliff? - -
To put it plainly, Cliff is an Iron Devil. He is the direct cousin of Faustus and good friends with Aoife Crawford. He leads a simple life as an auto mechanic in Hell, having never been summoned before by a Necromancer. He was quite interested when he heard that his coz had partnered up with an aspiring mage. It was strange as Faustus was a bit of a hot head given his affinity. Regardless, Cliff was happy for him and kept his ears open as to what Faustus was doing with the mage in question. This Will fella seemed like a cool kid and he definitely wanted to meet him at some point...
Then Cliff found out about the incident surrounding Will and Faustus.
Cliff gave Faustus a scolding and a stern talking to. Yeah, he knew his cousin was a fire devil... but that was no excuse for going berserk like that. Normally there would be discussion about how fully possessing Will was a necessary evil and whatnot... but that is not what happened. Cliff lectured Faustus about how they should have been training in how to successfully merge with each other. Faustus was beside himself in confusion while his wife, Mira, had a guilty chuckle in the background. Cliff swore he would be a part of Will and Faustus' mage activities in the future when the two were allowed to reunite.
To not go too far in depth here, Cliff is pretty easy-going personality-wise. He is one of those types that know how to deal with people, keep a level head when faced with adversity, and know how to lighten the mood. He's handy, resourceful, and a good problem solver. Also do not ever expect him to back down... he is an Iron Devil. And lastly, do not rearrange his stuff. He has everything where it needs to be.
- - In regards to merging and possession - -
When a Necromancer works with a devil, they channel the powers of that devil to perform magic. This leads to what could be considered possession by the devil. Ideally this state should be mutual, widely regarded as a merge. Merges are peaceful and lead to the mage being able to control their power and exercise skillful techniques. As stated previously, a mage properly bonded with a devil can fully merge and take on the traits of that devil. The form that results varies from mage to mage. In Will's case, he becomes a liquid metal version of himself when merged with Cliff.
Compatible personalities are also required for a proper merge. Will and Faustus have similar personalities. Mira compliments Faustus' personality, allowing her to also compliment Will's personality. Cliff's flexible personality allows him to merge with a lot of mages. Like personalities typically produce more dynamic forms while complimentary produce more skillful forms.
A possession occurs when the merge is chaotic, disruptive, or inharmonious. A possession will result in a form with a rogue personality. This will result in the mage going berserk and attacking things indiscriminately. Causes of such merge can be high risk situations, immediate danger, a mage being incompatible with the devil they summoned, emotional turmoil, severe disagreements, extreme arrogance, etc. Possessions require immediate attention as they can quickly get out of hand.

No, I am not flipping the bird in the drawing, that's just a metal spike coming out of my hand. In hindsight, I could have made part of the left leg narrower. I mean... it's fine for a first attempt, let's be real, nothing is stopping the leg from being in that position. Now I just have to work on getting the body to twist... and drawing faces from different angles. Still need to work on coloring metal, most certainly.
I don't know what else to say as this isn't that big of an upload all things considered. Also no, this is NOT Cliff's character profile. Working with a guideline is pretty fun though. I am definitely going to be trying it more... and I better, given how static my drawings are. I cannot rely on references forever. Eventually I have to learn how to draw without immediately resorting to a reference. There is nothing wrong with references, but the training wheels have to come off eventually.
