“DAMN IT ALL!” Karnage shouted as he blocked a torrent of fire from Blood-Wraith that kept pushing him back further into the temple. “That insufferable brat’s manners are… haha, well they’re just like mine.”
Anne could feel the chamber heating up drastically and her breath started to turn short as the oxygen was robbed from her lungs. “HE’S GOING TO KILL US AT THIS RATE!” she struggled to shout.
“Kill you, not me given that you’re a pathetic human after all,” Karnage nonchalantly stated as he solidified his footing.
With blood dripping from her nose, Anne cast a void spell that opened a portal that would have sent the fire raining down on Blood-Wraith and Morrigan had Blood-Wraith not reacted in time and rushed into the temple with Morrigan. “The boy’s the insufferable one!?”
“The boy’s the insufferable one…” Karnage repeated in a mocking manner as he knocked the two attackers back with a magic shockwave. “Oh please, you’re void magic wouldn’t let you die. Not that I would have cared anyways.”
“MUST I REMIND YOU WHO PROCURED THE MEANS TO CREATE YOUR SHADOW ORB IN THE FIRST PLACE?”
Taking advantage of the bickering, Blood-Wraith charged forward as Verdant Might, picked Karnage up, and threw him as hard as he could into a wall, causing Karnage to crash into it with a loud thud. “SHUT UP, YOU WASTE OF PNEUMA!”
“Blood, watch out for Anne’s magic!” Morrigan cautioned as she used her gravity magic to fling her too. Blood-Wraith not audibly confirming what she said was concerning, but Morrigan could tell that he heard her regardless.
“HAHA, YES!” Karnage said as he picked himself up. “What amazing brutality! If only that incompetent Audoan Knight had not been such a blithering pillock-I could have had myself a worthy successor!” This was met by a temple-shaking collision of fists between Karnage and Blood-Wraith, the latter having taken offense to the former.
Anne spit out some of the blood that had flowed into her mouth as she stumbled to her feet. “Focus on the battle, you fool! We are so close!”
“Oh no you don’t!” Morrigan declared as she began swinging her sword widely, yet rhythmically towards Anne, who was trying to prepare another void spell.
“Well this isn’t lady-like at all!” she shot back as she turned her arm into a red and black sword. Despite her reliance on void magic, she was able to hold Morrigan back with her rudimentary sword skills.
“Oh give me a break, broad!” Morrigan insulted as she continued her assault, not going to let Anne take advantage of her ever again. Truthfully she wanted to rip Karnage a new one, but Blood-Wraith was locked in for that fight and she was clever enough to know Anne ganging up on him was a recipe for disaster.
The brutal battle with Karnage was in full swing and Blood-Wraith was not going to give up until his sworn enemy was six feet under. It was hard to tell who had the advantage as both combatants were clearly not going to relent on each other. Karnage’s brute force was only matched by Blood-Wraith’s tenacity as they exchanged blows. Blood-Wraith was eventually knocked back and planned to switch forms until he finally saw it… Odo’s lifeless body on the stone altar. It was a sight that would have destroyed any man, but there was no time to grieve.
Time slowed to a crawl right then and there as a caustic rage built up inside of Blood-Wraith. Every grim feeling he had ever had about the conflict with Karnage had finally been confirmed, metastasized, and he could feel himself about to lose it. And as if deliberately setting the fuse to the powder keg ablaze, visions of the damage to the Cosmos Karnage had wrought flooded into Blood-Wraith’s vision, no doubt from the essence of his enemy that coursed within him. Countless universes had been destroyed, causing Blood-Wraith to finally let loose his unyielding anger amidst the desperate cries of those begging for mercy and salvation that rang out in his ears. The Avenging Spirit had heard their pleas, and now was finally the time for Karnage to pay for what he had done.
When Blood-Wraith assumed the form of Crimson Man - Promise again, it was different in a menacing way. In fact it almost resembled Karnage himself. Pure, unadulterated fury radiated in great ferocity from the armored man, and there was no sign that it could be ever tamed. Blood-Wraith punched Karnage so hard in the chest that it knocked the wind out of his lungs and sent him careening into the stone wall, creating a cracked indent in it. Karnage picked himself up and prepared to strike with one his swords, but Blood-Wraith knocked it aside. He then picked Karnage up and began slamming him around like a ragdoll. Anne was actually concerned Karnage would fail after seeing the beating he was taking, but Morrigan kept her focused on the battle at hand. This was tricky for Morrigan, however, as she was gravely concerned for her friend.
Karnage for once in his existence felt the pain of being on the losing end of a fight. It was utterly maddening that a mere boy was getting the upper hand against him, not helped by the strange, burning pain he felt, like he had been thrown into a great furnace for his sins. He had to be patient as he knew Blood-Wraith would eventually falter, even if it was just to rest or switch to another attack. After a few more beatings, Karnage saw his opening and went for it. Blood-Wraith’s anger had given great strength, but was also taxing on his mind. With a deft thrust of his mighty hand, Karnage reached through his opponent’s armor and chest and grabbed exactly what he was looking for. Blood-Wraith was jolted out of his berserk fury as he realized the worst had just happened…
“You may have wondered ‘am I mortal?’ in the past…” Karnage started to taunt before tearing out his prize.
Blood-Wraith felt the life drain from him, but not before one last act of defiance. “BURN IN THE WRATH OF GOD, KARNAGE!!!” He shouted in a voice that was not his as he raked his gauntlet-covered hand across Karnage’s face, leaving three deep gashes in it. The resulting scars would never fade, even in the next life and the life after that.
“INSOLENT WHELP!!” Karnage roared in pain as he ripped out Blood-Wraith’s ULTRAMagic and tossed him aside.
“BLOOD-WRAITH!!!” Morrigan screamed in agony as she launched Anne into the wall with a burst of gravity magic. She hurried over to her friend’s corpse as layers of ash dissipated into a lifeless and hollow, gray metal body. “BLOOD!! NO NO NO NO!!” she cried as she shook him.
“It’s… it’s up to you now, Morrigan…” he managed to weakly say before finally going fully limp. With tears streaming down her face, Morrigan held her lifeless friend in her arms and ran out of the temple as fast as she could.
Anne slowly turned to Karnage as he absorbed the stolen orb, which was pulsing with red light and had flames in each color of the rainbow orbiting it. “You actually did it?” To say she was shocked that the arrogant god actually acquired his goal was an understatement. She knew something was not right…
Karnage had the most wicked grin on his face and gave an evil, triumphant laugh. “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE BEHEMOTH GOD IS BACK! And before we get into the main event, let us do away with those pathetic bastard curses of Gudrun’s. We won’t be needing them going forward!” Karnage declared as he snapped his fingers, to Anne’s deliberately ignored objection. He then picked up the body of Odo and stabbed it in the heart with the Abhorrent Render, causing black and red energy to immediately erupt out of it. “AND INTRODUCING THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE ETERNAL ORDER…”
Aureolus and the group’s battle with Volf and Gudrun was interrupted by Morrigan running to her allies and collapsing before them. Aureolus felt his blood run ice cold when he saw who she was carrying and crying over. “BLOOD!!” he exclaimed in horror.
“He’s… he’s dead…” she choked out, struggling to hold it together.
David’s breath went shallow, with feelings he had felt from his past battles coming to the forefront. “Mother of… God, protect his soul on the way to Heaven…”
Before anything else could be said, a rumbling shook the city and an angered roar could be heard from seemingly nowhere. Despite everything going according to plan for The Tyrant God, he was still angered by what had transpired… “Uh oh, looks like it’s time to skedaddle, Gudrun!” Volf put forth as the energy of the area turned to chaos and destruction, recalling his automatons.
“Don’t need to tell me twice!” she said as Volf hopped on her back and the two flew out of there.
“SOURCE DAMNIT!” The Golem cursed. “WE NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE NOW!”
“ALREADY ON IT,” Tressacht said as he threw a glowing orb of magic into the air. “SERPENT, NOW!” A strange bolt of lighting, inverted in color and shape, struck the group, sending them back to safety as the city began to shake more violently.
Most of the ULTRAMagic Guild had been waiting in the main hall, ready to move out at a moment’s notice, but were taken by surprise when the group appeared out of nowhere in a burst that knocked everyone back a little. “What the…” Valerie started to say. “Everyone?! What are you doing… SOURCE, WHAT HAPPENED TO BLOOD-WRAITH?!” she panicked, causing everyone else to follow suit.
There was an incredibly loud uproar and sheer chaos was about to break out until Tiberius stepped in to quell it. “SILENCE!!!” he roared in a prolonged way long enough to get everyone’s attention. “EVERYONE, DO NOT PANIC! By the Source, what happened to Sir Raynot!? Did the worst case scenario happen?!”
“ARGH, DAMN IT, The boy refused to listen to me!!” The Golem stated as he slammed his foot. “My plan was to come back for reinforcements and he did not listen!”
Gummi pushed through the others and fell to his knees. He grasped Blood’s lifeless hand and felt a tear roll down his face. “Damn it, Blood, you fool…”
“Blood, no…” Mal also said as she knelt down next to Morrigan. “Morrigan… did you… did you help him?” She was trying not to cry as part of a promise to Leif to stay strong.
“Ye-yes…” she tried to say. “I was… I was right there with him, and he fought even to the last breath…”
“Thank you, Morrigan…” Mal replied as she placed her hand on Morrigan’s shoulder and wiped a tear from her face.
Aureolus felt a strange feeling fill his grieving body with strength and helped Morrigan up. In a sudden and subtle burst of light, Blood-Wraith’s body turned into a sparkling cloud of metal powder that went into both of them. In that moment, Aureolus felt more real than he had ever felt before. “There’s no time to waste. We need to get to The Iron City now, as I know Karnage is going to go after that first.”
“Wait, what about Morrigan?” Barry questioned, with a few others agreeing with him.
“She’s coming with us to fight against Karnage…”
“THE HELL SHE IS!” Jonathan roared with fury in his voice as he shoved the others aside. “SHE SHOULD BE THROWN IN A PRISON CELL FOR THE REST OF HER DAYS!!” The others were taken aback by this declaration and the emotional conviction behind it.
“Easy, John!!” Brandr tried to say, to no avail.
“Did I stutter, Mr. Hawkins?” Aureolus asked as he went right over to Johnathan, startling him.
“NO, but I’m this close to starting a black spot!!”
“JOHNATHAN DAVEY JONES HAWKINS,” David interrupted, sending a chill down Johnathan’s spine. Only his parents ever called him by his full name, and it always meant he was in trouble. “You will accept Morrigan amongst our ranks, as it was Blood’s last request for Morrigan to join us, and for us to protect her from Karnage!”
Jonathan could not believe what he was hearing and looked at both Aureolus and Morrigan. “You’ve got to be kidding me! We’re just going to let one of the enemies fight alongside us!?”
Schwarzes stepped forward and placed his hand on Johnathan’s shoulder. “I… I saw this coming, John. We need to let Morrgian join us. We owe it to her for all of the trouble she’s been put through, and she’s more important than most of you realize…”
Looking around seeing the concerned looks on everyone’s faces, Jonathan finally relented. “Fine…” he then went up to Morrigan and shoved his finger in her face, however. “But one wrong move and I’ll have you drawn and quartered!”
Morrigan swallowed hard and nodded. “Yes-yes sir…”
“And where in the blue blazes in Ludwig?!”
“He sensed something was off, so I sent him back to the city, as I sensed it too,” Aureolus answered. “And by the looks of it he also took Drago, Desislav, Tusk, and Wynnstan with him.”
“And right you were to do so,” Waramunt said, finally dispelling his Adalwin disguise to the surprise of some. “I wanted to send a message to tell them to get ready myself, but that was a little hard to do with Ensio protecting Lia and acting as a fail safe just in case something happened to me. This is a tragic day for all of us, but we can still win this battle!”
Deimos gave a remorseful laugh, clearly uneasy due to something from his past. “I hate to admit it, but Leif and I have a contingency plan just in case Blood kicked the bucket…”
“A plan?” Mal questioned. “What do you mean, Uncle Eustorgio?”
“Well that’s just ducky!” Jonathan complained, slapping his thighs in frustration. “More smoke and mirrors?! Alright, Deimos, just what in the cottonpickin’ name of Davey Jones’ locker do you have planned?”
“I can’t say yet…” there was a mix of groans ranging from exasperation to disappointment. “But we need to wait out for help to arrive once Karnage makes it to The Iron City.”
“Seriously, what do you have in mind if we need to resort to such a tactic?” Gummi questioned.
Tressacht cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention. “As much as we would like to discuss the particulars of this plan, we should get moving, as I can sense that Karnage is on the move.”
Siegeberht laughed as he rubbed his hands together. “And by sense, he means we know Karnage is on the move from our research into the past, haha!”
“Then let’s not dawdle any longer,” Alexia said as she began to move towards the exit, with the others starting to follow. “Let’s not let Blood-Wraith’s sacrifice be for naught!”
Vexation cracked his neck and knuckles as he walked, feeling an unprecedented level of clarity of mind. “I can’t wait to ring Karnage’s neck until he stops moving…” he confidently growled, with Drusa sharing the sentiment. “And The Vermillion King is never going to hear the end of it when I see him again!”
“Don’t get too mad at his majesty, Vex,” Schwarzes said as he caught up with him. “I understand your frustration, but this is a trying time for all of us…”
