With intel from the Liger Brigade confirming that Sebastian was gone for good (courtesy of a certain horseman lurking within Camelot), everybody was popping corks and enjoying a cold one. There was celebration all throughout the base, with an air of triumph that permeated everything throughout M.A.I.G. headquarters. Antares, Will, Adrien, and Satsuki had been summoned to the War Room by Colonel Aalders so he could address them and their deeds. He looked quite proud and had a smile on his face. The four did their best to stop grins slowly trying to creep across their own faces.
“Gentlemen, you have truly gone above and beyond in this situation,” Colonel Aalders stated. “The people of Red River City owe you a debt of gratitude. Not only that, but you also averted a potential catastrophe. That blaggard Sebastian is still out there, but we can rest easy knowing his plans have been foiled.” He then indicated for Marcus to speak.
“While I was skeptical at first, you have all made this country proud. Gentlemen, I salute you-and I apologize for my initial brashness.”
“And I’m glad you’re all safe,” Trumna added. “That was… all of that was something else. General Lundberg is going to have a field day with this incident, no doubt about it.”
Marcus nodded. “If there was ever a time to declassify these matters, now would be the time… minus the stuff concerning Conquest and The Unlight mind you.”
“Indeed, Colonel Trelawney,” Colonel Aalders replied. “Gentlemen, suffice it to say you’re all in line for promotions…”
The four celebrated amongst themselves, but Will was the most vocal. “YES” he said with a fist pump.
Colonel Aalders chuckled. “Easy, Private Ford. Don’t let your guard down just yet.”
Will straightened himself out, feeling a little embarrassed. “Sorry, sir, haha,” he replied with a salute. Antares and Adrien shook their heads with silent chuckles. “Permission to speak freely, sir!”
“Granted, Private Ford.”
“I’m going to go to The Unlight with Sam and Buster soon, to meet with the ULTRAMagic Guild. Shall I relay anything I find out?”
“Private, any information you can gather will help us immensely. Gentlemen, you’re all dismissed. Go have some fun!”
“Sir, yes sir!” the four said in unison.
Will and Adrien went back to Reynard’s quarters where he was holding a small celebration for the group. He had prepared some party food and drinks, topped off with some big band music from the 30s playing on his sound system. To Will and Adrien’s surprise, Valentin and Bethany were also there. Truly it felt good to see them celebrating the victory alongside the group. Their former adversaries had been through a lot and while they did do some questionable things, the two deserved a moment of peace. If anything, it tied up the loose ends of the mission that brought the group there in the first place.
“Welcome back, you two!” Reynard said as he prepared two big glasses of some of his best root beer for Will and Adrien.
After a round of greetings, Morrigan went and kissed Will on the lips, with a big hug. “So, how’d it go?”
“Promotions all around the board!” Will proudly announced. The others applauded and gave light cheers. “Please, you’re too kind,” he said with a chuckle.
“I can’t even begin to express how proud I am of you and Vlastimir, Will,” Milan said with pride in his voice. “Just wait until I tell the academy about what happened.”
“All in a day's work,” Vlastimir put in while dusting off his hands. “I didn’t get to use Danse Macabre like I wanted to, but easy come, easy go.” This elicited some more chuckles.
“Oh, Sam?” Ekaterina cut in. “Me and Vlastimir are going to be heading off to Ertheval, then to The Unlight from there. Given that it’s about high time we visited Blood-Wraith and the others, I imagine we’ll run into you guys while we’re at it. I can’t wait to see them all again.”
“And I can’t wait to impress Blood with my victory here, haha!” Will added.
Adrien laughed and ruffled his hair. “Fácil, amigo. We don’t want that ego developing ULTRAMagic, now do we?”
Olivia giggled, feeling a bout of nostalgia. “As is the case after every successful mission.”
“He’s done this before?” Buster inquired.
She nodded. “More times than I can count…”
That concerned Buster a little, but he would be lying if he did not feel similar confidence and pride from time to time. “So, Sam, when are we going to head to the Unlight?”
“Well not tomorrow, as we should probably rest up a little. Also Antonio will probably want to throw a little party for us…”
“Ooh, I’ll go call him right now then,” Olivia said as she stepped aside and got out her phone. “He’s probably worried sick about us.”
“Probably,” Jackson agreed. “Hey, Will, Sam? Can I swing by your place sometime?”
“Of course, Jack,” Will replied. “Don’t be a stranger.”
“And bring Elaine along with you when you get the chance,” Morrigan added.
“Will do,” Jackson agreed. “Faustus?”
“What’s up?” he asked after swallowing his food.
“Can you…um… can you hook me up with one of your devil friends?”
Faustus was surprised by that, but pleasantly so. “Well sure. I mean, you’ll have to bear with me while I find someone ideal for you, but yeah, I can do that.”
“Thanks…”
Reynard patted Jackson on the shoulder, slightly startling him. “So you really want to start learning magic, my boy? Well you’re in the right place. I’ll bust out my alchemy books first thing tomorrow morning.”
“How wonderful,” Aelia complimented. “Jackson, you are more than welcome to visit my coven for lessons. We would love to have you come learn with us.”
“And you can even enroll in the Hermetic Academy if you want,” Milan added. “We offer college level courses for all ages.”
Jackson had a happy smile on his face. “You guys are the best.”
“I told you you could become a mage if you tried,” Valentin pointed out, his crow cawing in agreement.
“Sorry for ever doubting you, Valentin,” Jackson admitted. He then noticed the crow. “Hey, Valentin? What’s with the bird?”
“Yeah, it’s been bugging me ever since it showed up,” Bethany put in.
“Oh, well this is one of Sylvia’s crows,” Valentin introduced as it gave a light caw. “Apparently my familiar, I thought I was going to be called to the Realm of Chaos right away. Evidently I have permission from Sylvia to rest up and relax before I head off.”
“An amicable deity,” Zoltan remarked after taking a sip of his drink.
“As long as it doesn’t leave any droppings…” Reynard started to say. The crow then flew over to a trash can away from the party (obscured from general view) and relieved itself. “Alright, fair enough. I’ll see what I have for nuts and fruit.”
Valentin gave a light chuckle as it flew back to him. “I think I’ll call him Ensio, after my uncle.”
“Your family would be very proud of you, Valentin,” Zoltan commented. “So Bethany, what are you going to do after this?”
She bubbled her lips and gave a light sigh. “I guess Colonel Aalders and Antares want me to come with them to Camelot for a bit. You know, study me and keep me safe…”
“There’s nothing wrong with that…” Will pointed out. “Er, I mean The protection part, hehe.”
“Yeah, especially given the manticore and whatnot… hey, Olivia? Promise you’ll visit me?”
She smiled. “Of course I will, Bethany.”
Will looked at Zoltan and some of his injuries. “Are you going to be okay, Zoltan?”
“Oh, these? It’s just a flesh wound…”
Vlastimir gave him an incredulous look and audibly exhaled. “Dad… just what is mom going to think?” He looked genuinely concerned for his father.
Zoltan sighed with a chuckle. “Okay, fine, I got pretty banged up. I’ll live, but I need to get stronger. The fact that that monster was able to overpower me scares me to no end…”
Will thought about it for a second. “Well, you could always swing by the ULTRAMagic Guild. We could probably help you out.”
“I’ll keep that in mind, Will. There’s also Duke Radovan Raynot, who is skilled in physical and magical combat. I’ll have to introduce him to you when I get the chance, Will. I think you’ll like him. Either way, we both have a long way to go, haha.”
The following day was a series of goodbyes as everyone prepared to head home or off to their next mission. Bethany got on a helicopter with Antares and Colonel Aalders and was whisked away to Sky Fortress Camelot. Antares made a joke about apprehending her on the ride there, which Colonel Aalders lightheartedly chided him for. What made it even funnier was that Bethany was thinking of the same joke. As for Valentin, he went to the entrance of Bethany’s crypt and held up a black, spectral greatsword. Sylvia’s raven descended from the summit of Mt. Steadyrock, picked him up by the sword, and flew off into the horizon. Despite being alive for nearly a hundred years, Valentin felt like his life was just beginning.
Milan and Aelia were quite busy, as they would be heading to the archmage's home in Ertheval… After Milan cleaned up some of the destruction from his battle. They had many things to discuss and wanted to spend some time alone. Zoltan, Vlastimir, and Ekaterina were taken to Sky Fortress Camelot where they were to be given a special flight home to Romania. And Umuka? Interestingly he wandered off as he thought he sensed an entity similar to him come into being somewhere else. Obviously he had to go look into it, accompanied by Yale as Milan was also curious. After saying goodbye to Adrien, Trumna, Reynard, Jackson, and Mary, Will and the group boarded a VTOL that took them home.
It felt amazing to finally go home after the month of chaos they had all gone through. Pausing to take it all in, outside of Morrigan’s house, Will noticed a certain boy and devil spying on them through the window. He laughed, then opened the door to be greeted by Antonio, Randalph, Kyu, Mayhem, and Orion. A party with all sorts of tasty food was ready to go.
“Welcome home, guys!” the five said together as the group entered. Will and Morrigan definitely felt their eyes nearly well up with tears.
“Dad, mom!” Orion exclaimed as he went to hug Will. “I was so scared when I heard that meanie Sebastian was attacking the city.”
“Don’t worry, Orion. There was no way he could have taken us down. And look, still in one piece…” Will then inhaled and popped his head off, which Morrigan caught. “Oops…” Everyone laughed. Orion then went to hug Morrigan after she handed Will’s head back to him.
“Hey hey hey,” Antonio greeted. “How’d it go, guys?”
“We came, we saw, we kicked their ass!” Will exclaimed as he double high fived Antonio.
Kyu stood there tapping his foot. “Ahem…”
Will then picked Kyu up and gave him a hug. “Don’t worry, Kyu, we’re all safe.”
“I swear, next time I’m coming with you guys. I’ve been getting the hang of Randalph’s alchemy lessons and you guys need to see some of the stuff I’ve been learning and creating.”
Faustus went over to the couch and sat down next to Mayhem. “What an adventure that was. I’d dare say I’m good for a while-also you missed out on the real party near the end, Mayhem.”
“A greater quest was never had,” he remarked with a chuckle. “I’d take a rain check on that last battle, but I’ll have to rain check that rain check given what I sensed.”
Buster gave a worried laugh. “Yeah, it was a bit concerning to say the least…”
Randalph tapped his staff on the floor to get everyone’s attention. “Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve been through a lot this past month. Regardless of the highs and lows, we came out on top. The Eternal Order has reared its ugly head once again, and I fully anticipate Tusk having a conniption over this…” The others chuckled and laughed. “...but we are ready for whatever comes our way! Will has ULTRAMagic now and we have the means to fight back. We will overcome our foes-but for now, let’s relax and enjoy some good food!”
As everyone got their food and sat down to eat, Will was telling all he could about the things the group had gone through over in Red River. It was plain as day that he was a little hyper. The looks on the five’s faces said it all, but Will took it in stride. His cavalier attitude was a bit concerning, but Mayhem and Randalph knew he could be easily tempered. Morrigan also noticed Will’s attitude, feeling vastly more concerned. At bedtime, Morrigan asked Will if he could sleep with her that night. It was not out of passion, rather anxiety had been eating at her.
“It feels great sleeping here again,” Will commented, all snuggled up nice and cozy next to Morrigan under her fluffy blankets.
“Yeah… Boyo? Are you sure you’re ready for this? The guild I mean…”
“Of course. Why wouldn’t I be? You?”
She sighed and remained quiet for a second. “I don’t know, it just feels weird going back to them after all that I’ve done…”
“Don’t worry, Sam, it’ll be alright.”
Morrigan smiled. “You know what? You’re right. Honestly they’ve probably been worried sick about me ever since I left…”
Will gave a sympathetic laugh. “Well there you go,” he replied with a yawn.”
A thought then occurred to Morrigan. “Will, you’re going to have to give it your all. The guild is pretty chill, but they do expect excellence at the end of the day.”
“Excellence is my middle name.”
Morrigan giggled and kissed Will on the forehead. “I thought it was Duncan, you goofball. Goodnight, Will.”
“Goodnight, Sam,” he replied as she turned off the bedside lamp.
The following day, Morrigan collected Will and Buster so they could head to The Unlight. She was nervous, but a promise was a promise. After saying goodbye for now to everyone and with a little encouragement from Randalph, Morrigan opened a portal. The ULTRAMagic Guild Hall was visible through the swirling mass of chaotic energy and all they had to do was step on through. Seeing Will and Buster excited and eager put a smile on her face as they entered the portal. Standing outside the main gate, Morrigan knew she had to face her past no matter what, and there was no time like the present.
