ULTRAMagic Interval - Chapter 28

No one was thrilled over Sebastian’s next attack that morning. Bent on destroying everything, Sebastian was targeting the essential workers of the city. Some were being housed at M.A.I.G. headquarters, but most were staying in a heavily guarded section of the city’s center. While the soldiers were ready for the next battle, they were not ready for the shadow golems. Each one proved vastly stronger than any typical shadow construct, requiring a great deal of effort to take down. This had become so bad that the use of specialized artillery was authorized, ranging from flamethrowers, miniguns, grenade launchers, and RPGs. It went without saying that these weapons had to be used with extreme care, hindering their effectiveness.
Will ran through the damaged streets amongst the sound of gunfire and helicopters flying overhead, with Morrigan and Mayhem close behind. Given that he now had ULTRAMagic and could successfully merge with Faustus, he was deemed suitable to join the fight. The caveat was that he needed to be accompanied by someone at all times and was to immediately retreat the instant he saw any trace of Sebastian. Spotting a golem flinging a group of soldiers around with ease, Will fully merged with Faustus and charged in. He leapt up on top of the golem, punched its head multiple times, and held open its mouth to unleash a torrent of fire into it.
The golem barely managed to throw Will off, so Morrigan slammed her sword into the ground. Waves of black fire rocketed forward towards the golem, finishing it off. “Are you okay, Boyo? That looked like quite the fall.”
“Yeah, I’m good. Ow, though…” Will said as he got up, dusting himself off in his human form.
“Careful, champ,” Faustus’ voice said from his right arm. “We may be tough, but we’re not invincible.”
“Noted…” Will then got out his walkie-talkie. “Deadlock to homebase, there’s… 3 wounded soldiers on Sun Street, in front of AR-Jay’s Electronics… Roger that, over and out.”
Mayhem finished up helping the soldiers get into a safe spot, returning to Will and Morrigan. “I wish Wynnstan Thorne was here, but I’m also not sure bringing a sixth dimensional hooligan such as himself to Earth is such a wise idea.”
“Who’s Wynnstan?” Will inquired.
Morrigan was surprised by Mayhem’s suggestion, but it seemed more out of concern for herself than the situation as a whole. “Whoa, Mayhem, you don’t think this warrants calling in the Arbiters of Droom, do you?”
Mayhem glanced around to think and gave a light sigh. “I hope not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Anne had found another gullible rogue god like when The Eternal Cult attacked Droomopolis 10 years ago…”
Just as Will was about to comment, he heard a lion’s roar and saw something run off. “Bethany!” he exclaimed as he went after her.
“Boyo, wait!” Morrigan called out as she and Mayhem followed him.
Elsewhere in the city, Milan and Zoltan were taking care of a group of golems that had deviated from their mission. They were heading down a road that would have taken them straight to M.A.I.G. As Zoltan smashed the last golem’s head in with a giant sledge hammer made of magical blood, Milan noticed something out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head to get a better look, but saw nothing. Of course he knew better than to assume it was nothing given what was happening at the moment.
“Zoltan, wait here for a second unless something comes up…”
“I trust you spotted something?”
Milan nodded. “Yeah. I won’t be more than a minute,” he replied as made his way to a grocery store.
Inside the store it was quiet, dark, and cold. The muffled sounds of gunfire were faint, and the only light was that that came through the windows. What Milan had seen was someone in the store and it felt like they did not want to be noticed. Whether it was a straggler or a looter, he had to look into it. Closing his eyes, Milan tuned out all possible distractions and focused. He was waiting for a certain movement in the particles around him. At the far end of the store, standing by the coolers was exactly what he was looking for.
“Valentin?” Milan called out, holding up a hand as if stopping something.
The archmage had made the right call as Valentin already had a card prepared. His hand was held up in the air as if by an invisible force. “How did you even detect me!?”
“One of the many perks of being 4D: you may be as quiet as a mouse, but you are incredibly noisy on the quantum level…” Milan then noticed Valentin was still trying to throw his card. “Look, I just want to talk…”
Valentin gave an exasperated sigh. “Fine…” Milan released his grip and he put the card back in his deck. “Keep it brief, Sebastian is on to me at the moment.”
“Valentin, I’ve noticed you’ve been acting differently as of late, especially in regards to the past couple of months.”
“Did you expect me to do the whole ‘Perkele’ song-and-dance for the rest of my life?”
“Well no, but it’s almost like you’ve been going out of your way to sabotage The Death Knell Coven and Sebastian…” Milan’s tone sounded like he was leading towards something. “Valentin, you’ve finally seen the light, haven’t you?!”
Valentin facepalmed. “Milan, I’ve always seen the light…”
“Pardon?”
“It’s been right over there this entire time,” he said as he pointed to the windows. “My cause has always been that of noble vengeance and recently I have decided to end this game… EXCEPT NOTHING EVER GOES RIGHT,” he complained as he kicked a rack. “First Will’s resilience, then Zoltan, and then that astral brat…!”
Milan crossed his arms and gave a disapproving look. “I don’t exactly condone you trying to assassinate one of my former students…”
Valentin had a rebuttal, but then he lost it. “Fine, I’ll eat crow on that one: That wasn’t my best plan.”
“Look, Valentin, how about you come back to M.A.I.G. with us? We can…”
“No, not yet. I still need to plunge the knife into that bastard’s back… and besides, he’s done something alarming to himself that I’m still doing research on. This information will be of great help to you, no doubt about it.”
Milan felt a chill run down his spine. “Alright, but be careful.”
“Careful is my middle name,” Valentin said as he readied his card again.
“Valentin, please stay safe,” Milan interrupted. “Come to us if things get messy.”
He chuckled. “A little late for that, but I'll keep your invitation in mind.” Valentin then vanished in his usual flurry of sparks.
Milan sighed as he grabbed a bag of chocolate taffy and deposited some money in the cash register near the windows. He was so close to getting Valentin to join him. The poor man had gone through so much in life, and it regularly broke Milan’s heart. Truthfully Milan was uncertain if his feelings were born out of a desire to be a father or guilt from a dead man he dare not name. Making things worse was that Valentin was wasting his potential on this quest for revenge. It was fully understandable, but vengeance was always a double-edged sword.
As Milan watched the outside, eating his candy, he heard a knock at the doors. “Milan!” It was Zoltan.
“Oops, sorry, Zoltan,” Milan said as he exited the store. “Kind of forgot we’re in the middle of a battle…”
“I sensed Bethany in the distance and Vlastimir says there’s a group of golems and constructs heading towards the east shelter. I’ll take care of Bethany while you rendezvous with my son.”
“Right, sure thing…” he then put some candy into Zoltan’s hand. “Give those to whoever you run into.”
Zoltan ran as quickly as he could, finding Will and Bethany clashing in an intersection. Will was in his merged form and Bethany was transformed into a full manticore… except, calling the battle anything other than a comedy act was foolish. Will was holding on to Bethany’s tail while she ran around like a panicked house cat. Zoltan could not hold back an awkward smile as Bethany cussed out Will for refusing to let go out of fear of her teeth. Morrigan and Mayhem were following as best as they could, trying to assist Will. The entire situation would have been comical had things not been a matter of life and death.
“Hold on, Will, I got you…” Zoltan called out as he slammed his foot into the ground, causing a stone monolith infused with red liquid to shoot up from the ground. Bethany and Will collided right into it.
“Hey, Zoltan…” Will said a little shaken up as he untangled himself from Bethany.
“Thank you, Zoltan,” Mayhem said, a little out of breath.
“Yeah, good catch on that one,” Morrigan complimented as she went to Will.
Zoltan smiled. “It’s what I'm here for.”
Bethany got back on her feet and sneezed, slightly disoriented from the impact. “Not the snoot again… Zoltan!?” she exclaimed.
“We meet again, Bethany…”
With her mind racing, Bethany was at a loss for what to do. Did she run like a coward again, or did she face Zoltan? “You… you… I can’t…” she then sensed something nearby. “Ha, I ain’t dealing with that nutcase” she said as started to run off.
“Bethany, where are you going!?” Zoltan called out with a raised hand.
“I’ll give you two guesses!” she called back as she got further away.
“That’s not good,” Will noted as he involuntarily split from Faustus. “Hey, everything alright, Faustus?”
He was wheezing, doubled over in exhaustion. “Sorry, sport, I’m beat. Mayhem, you’re up…” he then vanished in a poof of smoke.
“Well shoot…” Mayhem said as he kicked a piece of road. “Alright, fine, I can make this work. Will, how do you feel about becoming partners, starting now?”
“Wait, what!?” Will was taken off guard.
“Just like that?” Morrigan added.
“I know it's sudden, but it's a bit of a do or die situation right now,” Mayhem pointed out. “I’ve been taking notes and I think you got the stuff I’m looking for… you’re a little rough around the edges, but I can deal. We can’t do a full merge yet, but I’ll lend you whatever magic I can. What do you say?”
Will was speechless for a moment. “Yeah, of course!”
“Let’s do this…” Mayhem shook hands with Will, causing the two to glow for a moment.
Sleek opera gloves covered Will’s arms, resembling Mayhem’s attire. He then snapped his fingers multiple times, causing chaotic sparks to fly out from his hands. “Wow, cool. Let’s go!”
“I’ll lead the way,” Zoltan stated. “I can sense him already…”
Making their way through the damaged streets, the four found themselves outside city hall. The exterior took influence from Roman architecture, with a large archway above the front entrance. A bronze statue of an eagle sat before the upper windows, and the group could make out a figure standing off to the side. Stepping into the light, Sebastian looked down on his lowly enemies. He was enjoying standing tall above them, figuratively and literally.
“Das willkommen, meine damen und herren. So you’re the ones getting in the way of my glorious new world order?”
Zoltan spit on the ground. “Balderdash, you insufferable bou! How about I continue my father’s work with you?”
“Ah, die blutigen felder of 1945. What could have been a true masterpiece if it had been directed at those detestable allied soldiers…”
“SHUT UP!” Will said as he hurled a piece of asphalt at Sebastian. He dodged, causing it to break the window. “Oops…”
“Shoot, we could have at least hit that dumb eagle statue…” Mayhem remarked.
Sebastian gave a mocking laugh. “Please, child. You’re no more suited to shovel dung in the potato fields than to pick up a gun.”
Naturally Morrigan also picked up some asphalt and chucked it as hard as she could, hitting Sebastian directly in the head. “Bullseye!” Now the others were laughing.
“ARGH, insufferable wench!” Sebastian then recognized the succubus. “Ah, Karnage’s incompetent Devilfay. A useless traitor if I ever did see one…” This angered Morrigan, causing her to throw a flaming piece of asphalt. Sebastian caught this one and shattered it with his bare hand.
“Get down here, Sebastian, so I can ram a pike through your head!” Zoltan declared as a blood-like substance covered his right arm.
“As much as I enjoy these formalities, I’m only here to see what Karppinen has been failing to procure for… me…” Sebastian’s eyes had turned a sickly, glowing red and what he saw made his blood heat up.
Will had ULTRAMagic and it was clear that not only had Valentin failed, he had also given Sebastian’s enemies a massive advantage. Sebastian’s face grew bright red with anger, his brow furrowed, and veins were popping on his forehead. Looking like he was about to go ballistic, he clenched his teeth and barked orders in the angriest German imaginable. Shadow constructs and golems swarmed in with a simple order: kill. Sebastian then fled, leaping off to somewhere else.
Zoltan was not going to take that sitting down, so he punched the ground. Giant stakes made of blood shot upwards, impaling the majority of the constructs. Morrigan followed this up by stabbing her sword into the ground, causing jets of dark fire to erupt all around the group. The two then got to work taking out the rest of the golems and constructs. Will was not sure what to do, so Mayhem assumed a stance that looked like he was going to mimic him.
Will was amazed as knowledge of unbelievable spells flooded into his head. He cast a sphere of blue and yellow fire that detonated in a great explosion, devastating two golems. Fire then danced around him like will-o-wisps, seeking out any construct that ran up to him. Will laughed triumphantly as he cast a stream of flame that snaked towards foes, incinerating them. And all the while Mayhem was in near perfect sync with him. Truthfully he was impressed with how well Will was handling his magic. Of course it was to be expected in hindsight given that Will was a pyromancer, thanks to Faustus.
As the sun started to set, the group was starting to tire. Fortunately a familiar voice came in to help them. “Wicked Dragon: Baneful Crown!” Any remaining constructs and golems were destroyed by a series of thin, black spikes.
Zoltan tossed aside the head of a construct, straightened out his hair, and took a breath to steady his nerves. “Thanks, son.”
“No problem, dad,” Vlastimir replied with a little jig. “Eka, over here!”
“Oh good, we found them,” she said as she came running up. “Are you guys okay? A good chunk of what we were fighting just vanished on us and…” She looked around at the remnants of the battle, the remains of the constructs fading away into dust. “Ah, I see.”
“Don’t worry, we managed,” Zoltan assured her.
“YES, THAT WAS AWESOME!” Will proclaimed. He seemed to be wearing more of Mayhem’s attire, but it was not a full merge. It faded away as Mayhem looked worn out.
“Like what you saw, Will?” Mayhem inquired as he summoned a bottle of water and took a drink. “I can teach you some of my homemade spells if you want.”
“Absolutely!” he replied as he high fived Mayhem.
Morrigan patted Will on the shoulder, catching her breath. “Jeez, Boyo, I wish I had your levels of energy back…”
“Been out of it for too long, Morrigan?” Zoltan asked.
“Yeah…”
Zoltan cleared his throat. “Judging by how things seem to have settled down, I’d say it’s safe to head back to M.A.I.G. and rest. Sounds good?” There were no disagreements.
