Zoltan was inspecting the wall of an abandoned house, accompanied by a squad of M.A.I.G. operatives. There was a strange, rust-like substance here and there that gave off traces of magic, almost demonic-feeling energy. Intel reports had hinted at an anomaly being sighted there, so M.A.I.G. was obligated to investigate. Such a situation was the last thing they needed at the moment. Just as he finished taking a sample, Zoltan looked up and saw Will approaching. He was accompanied by Jackson, as to be expected.

“Will, what are you doing here?” Zoltan inquired. “You know it’s still dangerous for you, right?”

“Well yesterday went so well that Trumna decided…”

“I requested Will’s presence given the rumors that Akaya’s been sighted,” Jackson interrupted. “Plus we’ve got a full house here, so I’m not too worried about Valentin.”

“Ah, I see,” Zoltan replied. “Jackson, could you undo those locks for me? They’re fairly stuck and I’d prefer we don’t bust down the door.”

Faustus appeared beside Will, having been a little late to catch up. “Wait, why don’t you do it, Sport?”

    “Well, Jackson’s also a dullahan… Hey, why don’t I take a swing at it?”

“Have you been practicing, Will?” Zoltan inquired.

    “Um, no…”

Jackson was fiddling with the inordinate amount of locks when he heard the conversation. “You sure you want to take a swing at this, Weatherman?” Will stayed silent. “That’s what I figured. Trust me, you're dodging a massive bullet on this one…” After muttering a few incantations in what sounded like ancient, celtic-based speak, he snapped his fingers. The locks undid themselves like clockwork, despite the wear on them.

Mayhem appeared on the other side of Will. “Very impressive, Jackson. If I’m correct, those locks may potentially be sourced from Droomopolis. At the very least, the craftsman definitely went there at some point.”

    “Droom… what?”

“It’s a city within the Realm of Chaos,” Zoltan clarified. “Droomopolis is the home of The Arbiters of Droom, and the city is widely regarded as the sister city to The Iron City.”

Mayhem nodded. “Well put, Zoltan. And if you’re wondering if Valentin is behind this odd house situation, I doubt it. I think we would have noticed him by now, nor do I think Ealdhelm would have let him into the city, assuming he’s the one behind the locks.”

“Bizarre indeed…” Jackson remarked as he opened the door. He stuck his head and immediately recoiled. “ACK! Mold!”

Will stuck his head in next, barely bothered by the musty smell. He then looked up at the ceiling. “Oh geez, there’s black mold all over…”

“How the Hell can you even stand that… Oh wait, didn’t you grow up in a moldy house?”

“It wasn’t that bad, but yeah, there was definitely mold in my childhood home.”

One of the operatives wrote something down and tapped his clipboard. “Shall we acquire some PPE, Zoltan?”

“Certitudine,” he replied with a nod. “Definitely get some face masks.”

The disrepair of the house made sense as it was located in a low income area of the city. It was also fairly old and had trouble selling over the years. Will offered to go in, feeling he would be fine, but Zoltan denied this and instructed him to standby until they needed him. A little bored, Will asked one of the operatives what the deal was with the house. The operative explained that it had always been a hotbed for magic shenanigans, owed to it being out of the way and supposedly haunted. And given everything that had been happening, it warranted extra attention in recent months.

While they all waited around for the requested equipment to arrive, Zoltan went over to the fence close to where Will was and leaned on it. He then began fiddling with his phone. “You know, Will? I’m considering calling Milan and having him show up now.”

“Why don’t you? Me and Vlastimir have been eager to see him again.”

Zoltan scrolled through his contacts. “A fair point. I’ll see if he’s available to talk at the moment… Hey, wait a second; Where’s Vlastimir? He was supposed to be here…”

The operative from before overheard this and walked over. “Vlastimir and Ekaterina went off to go check on something related to the Sturluson House. Shall I call them back?”

    “Please do.”

“Yes, Sir,” he replied as he got out his walkie talkie and set it to the right channel.

Things were fairly uninteresting from that point on, so Will began pacing up and down the sidewalk. It was a fairly peaceful day, with a gentle breeze and the faint sound of cars in the distance. With his mind wandering, Will began looking around the deserted neighborhood when he caught something out of the corner of his eye. As he tried to get a better view of it, whatever the figure was moved, like it was aware that Will had spotted it. Naturally Will kept inching forward to get a better look at it. With everyone else preoccupied, Will ended up wandering away from the house. Faustus and Mayhem noticed this and promptly went after him.

“Sport, this is not a good idea…” Faustus warned as the three stumbled upon a vacant construction site.

“Agreed,” Mayhem added. “We really should go tell Zoltan…”

“Shh…” Will looked through a hole in the fence surrounding the site. “It’s Valentin and he’s alone. I think we can take him.”

Mayhem also took a peak. “Perhaps… I did go toe to toe with Wulfric in the past after all” he said as he summoned his swords. “I doubt Valentin can compare to the might of a Discordant God.”

Faustus let out a series of incoherent grunts. “Fine, let’s go teach Bozo over there a lesson, but the minute things get hairy we run like Hell, got it?”

The three rushed across the dusty yard, past a large crane carrying steel I-beams, to near where Valentin stood. “Alright, Valentin!” Will called out. “The jig is up and the news is out: you're cornered!”

He did not seem to be bothered by this declaration. “Am I now?”

“Yes! We’ve got you dead to rights!” Will then laughed triumphantly. “I’ve always wanted to say that…”

“O’Zasiel, o’Zasiel… Don’t you know that curiosity killed the cat!?”

Will braced himself as Valentin threw out two cards… only to be completely fine. “Ha! You missed me!”

    “Did I?”

There was a sinking feeling as Will felt something grab his leg. He looked down and panicked as a pit of tar was at his feet. A pair of arms on both sides were pulling him down, deeper and deeper. Will’s mind was racing as he was trying to figure out what had happened to Faustus and Mayhem. As he sunk down to his chin, the horrifying realization had occurred to him: The two devils had been turned into the tar pit!

“It is truly a shame, William,” Valentin remarked. “Perhaps in another timeline we could have been friends, maybe even with I as your mentor. I did admire your innocent boldness and courtesy, but alas, this game of cat and mouse needs to move on to the next act…” He then jumped up to one of the second floor beams of the incomplete building, tossing a third card at the crane’s pulley. “GOODBYE!” he said in the most arrogant tone possible.

Time slowed to a crawl for Will as he watched the beams fall. Was he about to die? His vision blurred as images from his past flooded back into his mind. Tears ran down his cheeks as he realized this was it. No more Sam, no more Kyu, he would never see his family again, and the world was now in jeopardy all because he just had to run off and be the hero. He did not want to die, but all he could see was a light at the end of a long tunnel… except, a bright, red light suddenly dissipated it.

Zoltan had come out of nowhere with a flying kick that knocked the beams far enough away from Will. When he landed, a blood red aura surrounded him and intensified with his rage, which could be sensed from far away. Valentin was stunned, staring with his mouth dropped open as he took a moment to process what had just happened. Jumping down to the ground, he readied his cards and tossed some out. Zoltan was too angry to be subject to his magic, so the cards burnt up and reappeared in his deck. Naturally Valentin panicked when Zoltan charged forward with a bloodlust in his eyes, looking like he was going to kill him.

The construction site was devastated by Zoltan’s destructive punches and stomps. Valentin could barely maintain his composure as his opponent was relentless. It was quickly becoming apparent that he should have gone with his backup plan instead. While the showdown was going on in the background, Vlastimir and Ekaterina came running up to help Will. They were unsure what to make of his current predicament.

“What even is this?” Ekaterina questioned. “Should… should I try to pull him out with my ribbons?”

“No, wait!” Vlastimir had noticed two cards embedded in the black sludge. “Stinging Thorns!” he called out as a thorny vine emerged from his palm. Vlastimir whipped the cards, destroying them and reversing the magic. Will, Faustus, and Mayhem then popped up from the ground and landed on their bottoms.

    “Rotten blaggard…” Mayhem cursed.

Faustus scrambled to help Will up as pieces of construction materials landed around them. “SPORT! CHAMP! TALK TO ME! Are you okay!?”

Saying nothing, Will grabbed his fire devil by the wrist and dragged him over to the battle between Valentin and Zoltan. “HEY, VALENTIN!” Will barked at the top of his lungs.

Zoltan backed off as he could sense something was brewing inside Will. Valentin then watched as the dullahan held up his hand and summoned a gigantic ball of fire that resembled a sun. “MOTHER OF GOD!” Valentin panicked. This level of retaliation had not been accounted for, to say the least.

“LET ME RETURN THE FAVOR! TAKE THIS!”

Just as Will was about to throw the fireball, something else happened. Sam of all people flew through it, causing it to coalesce into a strange sword she held, enveloping the blade in dark, shadowy fire. Once on the ground, she slammed the blade into the earth, unleashing a great torrent of flame. Valentin barely had enough time to throw down some cards to protect himself as the inferno ravaged the metal barrier he had erected. Sam and Will then fell to the ground after the attack was finished.

“Sam, what in the blue blazes was that?” Will asked.

“Stuff from the past. And I said I wasn’t going to let him lay a finger on you. Guess I was a little late, oops…” she replied, trying to catch her breath in the process.

“Better late than never, Morrigan,” Mayhem pointed out.

“Sport, ow, I need my arm back…” Faustus complained.

“Oh, sorry, Faustus… Thanks, Sam,” said Will.

Zoltan could see Valentin trying to regain his bearings, so he went in for a punch. Annoyingly he was able to leap back just in the nick of time. “CURSES!” Valentin exclaimed. “You may have won this round, William, but this isn’t the last you’ll hear from me!” he said as he ran away.

“Oh come on, Valentin!” Will called out as he struggled to stand. “Is that all you got!?”

“Bloody coward…” Zoltan said as cracked his neck. “Vlastimir, Eka, help Will and Sam get back to headquarters. Mayhem, you take care of Faustus.”

“Zoltan, Bethany launched an attack on M.A.I.G.” Sam warned.

    “WHAT!?”

“Shoot, we need to get back right now!” Faustus said as he tried to move, only to stumble.

Mayhem looked a little antsy. “Argh, I don’t like doing this, but everyone stay still! I’m going to teleport us all back!”

M.A.I.G. headquarters was a miniature war zone as Bethany led a battalion of shadow constructs in an assault against the base. These were more resilient constructs, taking a bit more gunfire to dispatch. Not helping matters was that Bethany had taken the form of what appeared to be a manticore, seven feet tall and incredibly dangerous. Her tail was of dire concern given Will’s past encounter with it. The M.A.I.G. soldiers had to be careful as one sting would most likely be lethal.

Bethany laughed as she chased her opponents around, toying with them relentlessly. “WHAT’S THE MATTER, JARHEADS!? AFRAID OF A WITTLE KITTY CAT?!”

Just as she was about to sting a soldier, Satsuki dashed in and sliced off her tail with the swiftest cut of his swords. “Try that again and I’ll cut off more than just your tail…” he warned.

“FIRE IN THE HOLE!” Buster shouted as he shot a magic blast that sent Bethany flying back a bit. He was in his true form and his right arm had been turned into a cannon.

“Nice shot, amigo!” Adrien complimented as he pointed his guns at the recovering manticore.

“Hehe, thanks!” Buster replied as his arm went back to normal. “Brother said my magic was a bit unorthodox, but I like to think I made it work…”

They were interrupted by a loud, lion’s snarl as Bethany stomped towards them, her tail quickly growing back. “I’M GOING TO KILL ALL OF YOU!!!”

Satsuki readied his blades. “Looks like we’re not out of the woods just yet…”

It was then that Zoltan came running up, enveloped from the same aura as before. “Bethany! It’s been a while.”

She froze as dreadful memories from decades past came back to her. “Z-Zoltan!?”

“In the flesh” he said as he held out his arms, as if introducing himself when he did not need to.

Bethany lost her nerve right and there, making a run for it. Without her, the remaining constructs did not stand a chance. Zoltan relaxed as they were picked off one by one.

Adrien let out a breath alleviating his anxiety. “Thank goodness you’re back, Zoltan. Madre de dios, what was that?”

    “Something I hadn’t accounted for…”

“That doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence…”

    “Agreed,” Satsuki added.

“Oh, Zoltan!” Buster cut in. “Where’s Will? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine. Come, he should be in the medical wing by now.”

Buster stumbled over his words for a second. “Being in the hospital doesn’t usually mean you’re fine!”

Adrien laughed. “Well we won’t find out if we hang out around here all day…”

“Indeed,” Satsuki replied. “Let’s get inside just in case Valentin has something else up his sleeves.”
