“I’m sure you’ve heard this already, Will, but you really should have spoken up beforehand,” Dunja pointed out as she brought the two to a strange, stone door engraved with eldritch runes. “Trust me, I have experience-you know, one occupation of a neighboring kingdom later,” she said with an awkward chuckle.
Will looked around, noting how empty and abandoned that part of the tower was. It was incredibly eerie and felt like something was watching him. “Yeah, definitely…”
“I know it may be difficult, Will, but don’t be afraid to speak up,” said Aureolus. “Looking like a fool is better than getting hurt any day of the week.”
“Yeah, pretty sure that is something Colonel Aalders would say, haha. Doesn’t help that my version of Earth has a lot of selfish buffoons that shun asking for help every single chance they get…” Will sighed, then took a moment to study the entrance further. “So what is this strange door for? Does it lead to the ‘Nexus?’”
“Precisely,” Dunja answered as she tapped the stone with the back of her fingers. “We call these ‘Nexus Doors.’ As for what the Nexus is… well it’s a very odd, in between realm where you can commune with higher entities, similar to The City of The Abyss beneath the city. Ideally this realm is for those having trouble communing with the higher powers.”
Will was nodding along, but seemed a little confused for a moment. “Pardon my asking, but why not use The City of The Abyss?”
“A couple of reasons: Firstly it’s a sacred place for The Descendants. It’s nothing against outsiders, but we really don’t want another Milosh coming in and setting up shop down there, if you catch my meaning. Two, it isn’t a true neutral space like the Nexus is.”
“Plus the Nexus is a bit special in that it is not too far off from where me and Blood were born,” Aureolus added.
“Fair enough,” Will conceded. “So how do we get in?”
“Like this; Ar, Xru, Tza,” Dunja said in a reverberating voice as she moved her fingers over a set of runes that lit up as she passed over them.
The stone door made a grating, grinding sound as it slowly opened up into what looked like black nothingness. Upon heading inside, Will looked down and noticed an awe-inducing sight. A colossal set of rings of golden light appeared far below the three. The rings lit up the void, revealing that it was a churning mass of black and white chaos that resembled clouds at first glance, but was otherwise indescribable. Walking in the realm was strange, as what constituted as the floor rippled with a faint, magical chime upon every footstep. Will thought he was going to lose his balance and footing, but the rings gave him the sense of direction he needed. And as if that was not surreal enough, Will could have sworn he had seen an eye and a smile off in the distance that vanished as soon as he focused on it.
“There’s wind here?” Will noticed that there was what sounded like a continuous breeze, empty and hollow, that gave him the chills. “And where’d the door go?”
“That’s just the sounds of the Nexus,” Aureolus answered. “And don’t worry, the door will come back when we need it.”
Dunja naturally had to take a moment to inspect the space they had entered. After looking around real quickly for the thing that Will had noticed (she had noticed it too, but did not want to alarm him), she paced around a little while thinking. “Hum, we’re going to need somewhere to sit… Ar, Vey, Tza.” A space with the furnishings of a modest living room faded into existence next to them, resembling something from the tower. “Take a seat, boys.”
Will was a little nervous as the main couch seemed like nothing, but felt like there was something there and was quite comfy. “This place is giving me the creeps. I can see why Mal took a raincheck now… So I trust that those were all void spells?”
“Indeed,” Dunja replied. “Would you like to meet who facilitated that magic?” Will nodded, so Dunja prepared her fingers to whistle. “Give me one second, sometimes The Grass God can be a little lazy getting out of bed in the morning…”
After a quick, shrill toot, a door made of what appeared to be giant blades of grass emerged from the Nexus floor. It opened up and what looked like a youthful man who was various shades of grass green stuck his head out. “Someone call for me and-Hey, Dunja!”
“Grassy!” she said as he walked over for a hug. “How are you doing? Keeping out of trouble I trust?”
The Grass God chuckled as his hair was ruffled. “Yeah, don’t worry, I didn’t retcon any manga on any Earth across the Cosmos this time. Also goodness, it’s been a wild ride recently, hasn’t it? The Shadow God’s been doing great and has been wanting to see you again ever since he came back to our side.”
“Ah, yes, him… that’s uh… that’s good to hear…” Dunja finished with a nervous chuckle.
Will leaned over to Aureolus as he could sense Dunja’s awkward feelings with ease. “Shadow God?”
“Her previous void patron,” he whispered back. “You know, back when she was with Milosh and whatnot…”
“Ah, she’s still a bit nervous about it I presume?” Aureolus nodded in response.
Dunja then cleared her throat to get the two’s attention. “Boys, this is my current void patron, The Grass God.”
“William Ford and Aureolus Schindewolf!” he said as he went over to shake their hands. “It is a pleasure to meet you two, especially you, Will. Lord Anti and The Virus God have been waiting for this day for some time now.”
Will noticed that the bodysuit The Grass God was wearing felt like a kind of plant-like material as he shook hands. Being in his presence was something else as a sense of wonder filled Will to the brim, giving him the impression that he had just stumbled across something truly amazing and life changing. “Nice to meet you too, Grass God… also that’s um, uh, good to hear… I’m sorry, but who are they exactly?”
“They’re both old friends of yours believe it or not. The Virus God is a fairly off-the-grid god of memes and infectious ideas, all about transferring knowledge and exploring the depths of thought. As for Lord Anti, he is an Ar’ton lord, one of the few known 13th dimensional Ar’ton. As for why they are your friends, I can’t say as you’ll need to find that out on your own. Trust me, it will blow your mind when you do.”
Will nodded as a strange feeling of familiarity washed over him. The Grass God was certainly correct, but Will could not figure out why at that point in time. “Are we friends, Grass God?”
“We can be if you want to.”
“Alright then, sure. So what’s next? Do we practice some magic or do we find my own god?”
The Grass God sighed and crossed his arms. “Oh boy, that… Dunja? We have a slight SNAFU…”
“What’s the matter, Grassy?” she asked.
“So you want to find Will a void patron, correct?”
She nodded. “Yes, as I can sense his void caller potential.”
“Right. Initially we were going to have The Grave God step in, but someone else volunteered… and he was insistent.”
“Someone else? Grassy, why are you being vague? Who is it?”
Thinking about how he wanted to word his thoughts, The Grass God stepped past all of the furniture and out into the open. “Here, let me explain what void magic is to Will before we get into all of that. So, Will! You want to be a void caller? Well you’ve come to the right place. Do you know what void magic is?”
Will stretched a little and got comfortable in his seat. “I’ve been told it’s a lot like necromancy…”
“Exactly! With necromancy you are communing with those considered incorporeal for help and boons and void magic uses the same concept-except now you are working on a truly grand scale, calling upon us!” The Grass God then pointed up, causing a green star to form above them and collapse into a white dwarf. “This is the power of the Cosmos managed by us, all at the tip of your tongue.” He then snapped his fingers, causing the white dwarf to turn into a centuries-old forest sprawling out all around them. After letting the sunny, teaming landscape linger for a second, he waved his hand around, sending the forest off to a realm that needed it. “All you need is a willing, 10th dimensional entity or higher and some void spells.”
Will got up and lifted his head off to release a plume of excited, orange smoke. “Wow, utterly incredible…”
“Hey, Will?” Aureolus interjected. “I just had a thought: What if your specialty is actually void and not alchemy? It would explain why you had trouble with the latter prior to gaining ULTRAMagic.”
“Interesting point, Aureolus. Huh, I wonder what Milan, Ellen, and Aelia will think about that one… So, Grass God, what’s the issue you’ve been alluding to?”
“Ahem, there’s several types of higher entities you can work with,” The Grass God continued. “There are pure gods, rogue gods, some Ar’ton, and demigods. I’m the last one, by the way. There is a fifth, however; bizarre gods.”
Will could see Dunja and Aureolus grow concerned, which worried him. “So what’s wrong with the last one, given that you singled it out?”
Aureolus groaned a little and spoke up. “They’re gods that didn’t originate from the Cosmos or God. They are incredibly unpredictable and potentially very dangerous… Grass God, are you sure about this?”
The Grass God looked nervous, stroking his chin a little. “I… I trust him, but… Dunja, should I just go get him?”
She appeared to think about it for a second, then nodded. “Yes, as we won’t get anywhere just talking about him.”
“I’ll be back in a second then,” he said as he departed through his door, causing it to vanish in a cloud of green smoke.
As the three waited for a couple of moments, Will had a question pop into his mind as Dunja took a seat on the couch. “Hey, Dunja? Has your skin always been a sort of lilac color?”
“Mm-hmm. It’s my Haugen blood. Sten has a similar situation with his cloudy gray skin.”
“Ah, interesting.” Will was not sure how that information was going to help him, but at least his curiosity was satisfied.
Another moment later the Nexus shook as a reinforced, iron door emerged from the floor. Several strange locks undid themselves followed by the door creaking open, Out stepped a man that looked like a military officer, followed by The Grass God. The man was a bit odd as he was wearing what vaguely resembled a M.A.I.G. uniform. He had red eyes with dark purple hair that was almost black. Its slightly messy nature indicated that he was a former recluse. Dunja and Aureolus were immediately weirded out, but Will seemed to recognize the man for some reason.
The man looked at the three and smiled when he saw Will. “Ah, Hello, everyone! I am The Undead God, but you can call me ‘Mads Sagan.’”
That name promptly clicked with Aureolus as he stood up. “Hold up! Mads Sagan? ENCOM Specialist Mads Sagan?”
“Yup, that would be me… kind of weird that my old life is on nigh-full display in those games, but it is what it is…”
“Wait, ENCOM?” Will questioned. “Mads? Hold on, I got a Zasiel memory coming back to me… The Requiem Series?”
“Yes, Will,” Aureolus said as he lightly shook his shoulder. “Blood’s been obsessing over those games and the bugs surrounding Mads have been creeping him out…” He slowly put two and two together, realizing that things the two had written off coincidences now had significance. “By the source… You want to work with Will, Mads?”
Mads nodded and indicated for The Grass God to take a seat. “Indeed, Aureolus. Things have been crazy ever since I left the Requiem Cosmos and Will has been on my radar for some time now. And it’s not because Zasiel was a fan of my questlines-although that does help, ha. No, you see the thing is that I know things that you guys don’t and Will is going to need my help going forward.”
“Fair enough, I suppose…” Dunja said as she got up. “Care to elaborate on any of these things you know?”
“Sorry, your majesty, but that would ruin the surprise,” Mads answered as he went over to a pitcher of water to get a drink. “Will has met several friends and associates of mine already, by the way: Reynard, General Dryden, Jackson, Mary, and Adriana… wait, hold up-you haven’t met Adriana yet. You’ll meet her soon though, don’t worry.”
“Wait, my Adriana?” Dunja questioned, with Mads nodding. “I’m going to have to have a talk with Andelin when we get back…”
“Reynard and General Dryden?” Will remarked.
“Yes,” Mads answered. “General Dryden spent a good amount of time as the director of ENCOM, and trained Reynard as his successor for when he left the Requiem Cosmos. Reynard was obviously an outsider though.”
Will then gave a slightly hysterical laugh. “Jack was a video game character!? Jeez, just wait until Vlastimir and the others hear about this one…”
“I can tell you all sorts of stuff from my time in the Requiem Cosmos if you want. Want to be partners, Will?”
“Yes!” he started to say, becoming a tad hyper.
“Hold up, sweetie,” Dunja said with a raised hand.
Mads chuckled a little. “Dunja, he already said yes…”
She groaned a little. “I am the queen here. I get the final say.” Aureolus and The Grass God quietly giggled, but Dunja stood her ground. “Mads, can you provide a set of void spells and respond in a timely manner?”
“You have my word as a god and an ENCOM operative,” he said with a raised hand.
Dunja paused, then nodded. “You have my blessing then.”
“Excellent,” Mads said, rubbing his hands together. “Let’s get started, Will, as I’m a bit of a scientist with this stuff…” he then snapped his fingers, turning Will into a man made of glowing, black and gray lava.
“EXCUSE ME?” Dunja exclaimed as Aureolus and The Grass God silently panicked a little. “Just what are you doing?!”
“Don’t worry, it’s just a spell to prevent him from being frozen in ice cream again,” Mads assured her. “Besides, it was already there in his mind to begin with.”
Will stumbled out into the open as his body radiated intense heat. “Mads? This is going to make it hard to hug Sam…”
Mads laughed. “That spell is ‘Helx, Xhra, Dux’ in case you’re wondering. Now, let’s see what else you got in your head…”
