“Well, Dunja, this is quite the encounter,” Folkvar stated as he looked the queen in the eye. “Looking back on it, I got the impression you were beginning to falter after… THAT attempt at a religion Milosh suggested.”
Despite towering over the boy at seven feet, Dunja felt incredibly small and pathetic. “I know I don’t deserve it, but…”
“Stop.” He held his hand up. “Don’t do that. You do deserve it. After what I learned and getting the full story from my father…” He sighed. “... I forgive you.”
“Really?” Dunja subtly cried with hope in her eyes.
Folkvar was trying to hold back a giggle as the queen’s renewed enthusiasm was endearing. “Yes. You still have things to answer for, but we are family after all…”
“Thank you thank you thank you! I promise I will not let you down!” She wanted to hug him so badly, but stopped herself. “Um, I’d hug you, but I’m wearing armor at the moment,” Dunja said with a chuckle.
Aureolus took a second to process part of that exchange. “Wait, family? How are you two related?”
Barna patted his shoulder. “Dunja is the daughter of the late Harvery Haugen, Sten’s Uncle. You can imagine it was quite a shock to his majesty when she sided with Milosh…”
“Incredible.” Aureolus went up and hugged Folkvar. “Pleasure to meet you, cousin!”
“Pardon? What is the meaning of this?”
“Aureolus is my newest son, Folkvar,” Barna answered. “Blood-Wraith found him and I adopted him.”
“Oh, okay then. It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Aureolus.” The prince took a second to inspect the boy, as he was a truly an odd sight to behold. “My, just what are you?” He asked as he rolled up Aureolus’ sleeve.
“I’m nothing, a being of darkness that Milosh brought into existence… At first I wanted to go back to not existing, but Blood and the others are too awesome to just abandon like that.”
“Jeez, out of all the crazy things that cretin has done…” Allan lamented, albeit in a thankful manner. “Nice to meet you, Aureolus.” The two shook hands, with Allan mentally noting how strange Aureolus felt.
“You too, Allan. Dad’s said a lot of great things about you.”
Taking a deep breath of his own, Allan faced Dunja. “So… the tables have turned after all. Ma said this wasn’t impossible. She had faith in you, believe it or not.”
“How is Torunn doing?” Dunja asked.
“She’s doing great, despite all the trouble the other Blades give her… but how are you doing, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Dunja sighed. “All over the place. Blood-Wraith and his friends foiling the Lich finally got me to wake the flip up… and the kid even talked some sense into me.”
Allan nodded, then smiled. “Well hey, sometimes it just takes a push and a step in the right direction. Honestly Torunn was a tad surprised you didn’t go down the honorable death route… oh, speaking of Ma: She recently told me about how you left me at her doorstep all those years ago…”
“Sh-she did? What did she say?”
Allan grinned in a way that indicated he was still perplexed over the issue. “Well, she told me that she knew it was you from the letter you put in my pocket. Apparently your handwriting is pretty obvious…”
“Oh, right… yeah, hehe. In hindsight I probably should have gotten someone else to write it.”
“That was one of the things that indicated you were faltering to her. Now she didn’t let me read certain parts of the letter until recently, which I assume is something related to my parents. And that’s all I know. Mind if I ask what happened that night? And who my parents are?”
Dunja looked around. “Allan, I have a lot to say about that, but I’d rather not say it out in the open…”
Allan was on the same wavelength as her, one could say. “...yeah, agreed. Lord only knows who’s listening in at the moment…”
The mood was broken by the sound of the roaring coming back. It was still low, but Barna felt the need to speed things up. “Right, right! Very good. Boys, this is Gabriella Pari. She’s here to help us out on Valentina’s recommendation…”
“It’s a pleasure and an honor to meet both of you.” She was a little concerned over Barna’s increasing anxiety, but hid it with a smile and her usual greetings
“Likewise” Allan replied as he shook her hand.
“I must say, Ms. Pari, your frock coat is quite magnificent,” Folkvar complimented. “May I ask who made it?” He inquired as he also shook her hand.
“Oh, why thank you, your highness. My mother made it for me. I wasn’t quite sure about red at first, but it’s been growing on me.”
“Well I must further say that she is quite the seamstress then…”
Barna could not wait anymore. “Alright, Folkvar, I don’t mean to cut you off, but I know exactly who that roar belongs to. We either need to deal with it now or go to talk to Sten. And if we’re dealing with it now, things could get complicated…”
The prince’s expression turned grave. “Oh my… you don’t mean it’s…”
“I do. I know that roar like it was one of my own…” Barna glanced down an alleyway, trying to determine where it was coming from. As he did, he saw something that made his blood run cold and caused the hairs on the back of his neck to stand up. In the distance was a shifty looking man carrying a case under his arm. “GUMMI! GET OVER HERE!” Barna barked with a subtle fury in his voice. The man noticed this and fled. Barna tried to follow him, but the roars sounded like they were getting close. He stopped in his tracks and growled. “QUICK! One of you go after him!!”
“Already on it!” Weaver replied as he ran.
“...I’ll cover him!” Gabriella stated she materialized two flintlock pistols and followed.
“Good, lass!” Barna called out. “Stay together and don’t get separated!” He returned his attention to the group. “The rest of you be on guard. I’m sure of it now: Gummi was messing with The Rumbling Beast!”
As everyone else looked around, Aureolus addressed his father. “Dad, what’s going on? Who was that? What’s this beast?”
“That man was Gummi, Milosh’s son. And The Rumbling Beast is Sten’s familiar! That rat bastard has been tormenting Rumbler for some time now… Allan, take Folkvar to the castle. We’ll meet you there. Send help if things get dire!”
“Right, yes sir. Come with me, Folkvar!” he replied as he slung the prince over his shoulder.
“Allan! How many times do we have to go over this? I can walk, you know!” Folkvar complained as the two faded into the distance.
Barna would have chuckled had things not been so tense. “Son, Dunja, Claudius: Don’t harm Rumbler. Our goal is to calm him down.”
“Infatti, but that may be tricky with Dunja in our midst…” Claudius pointed out.
Dunja was about to rebuke, but closed her mouth. “Okay, should I go with Allan then?”
“SHH!” Barna hushed. He needed to listen as the roars had become louder.
Clashes and blows were clear as day amongst all the chaos. All of it continued until suddenly it stopped. This was not a good sign. The ensuing silence was deafening as the tension mounted, with time dragging on until something broke the stillness. A gigantic, metallic being came flying out of nowhere as if it had just been thrown. Everyone scrambled as it landed with an earth shaking thud. When the dust settled and the robotic knight could be made out, it was discovered to be Maximus Schindewolf-Raynot.
“Ow, that one hurt… Grandpa Barna? Ow…” His body creaked and groaned as he shakily got up. “We got trouble…”
“I can see that! Boy, where the Hell is The Beast of Old!?”
“Argh, he’s off investigating some kind of anomaly…” Maximus barely had a second to get his bearings before his opponent came flying at him. “SHOOT!” He dodged just in time.
The Rumbling Beast was a fearsome creature to behold. Standing at twenty feet tall, it had orange and black fur with a bulky, muscular body. It was best described as a cross between a wolf and a bear, while also having traits reminiscent of a gorilla. It growled with teeth gnashed and claws scraped the area around it as it went after Maximus. As Barna took on his giant beast form, being that of a similar wolf-bear hybrid (leaning more towards a wolf man if anything), Claudius hurried Dunja and Aureolus into safety. He knew the three were out of their depth. And the fact that the beast had been able to throw Maximus like that did not help either.
Barna could sense what was wrong, but was not sure what to do. The Rumbling Beast was hurt, scared, and confused. He tried to calm it with low rumbling sounds intended to soothe it, but this was slow going. Just as he started to get the beast's attention, it would notice the robotic knight and go back to fighting him. This led to Maximus continuously getting hit. He could endure, but even he was starting to reach his limits. As Dunja watched from the shadows, she had had enough and began to walk out to the battle.
Claudius quickly grabbed her arm and stopped her. “Dunja! Cessare! What are you even doing?!” He demanded to know.
“I can’t just sit here, look at the poor thing! I need to do something!”
“But Aunt Dunja! What if you make him angry again!?” Aureolus pointed out.
Dunja began to free herself. “I don’t care! I’ll come up with something…” Just as she started to exit the shadows, something odd happened.
“HYAH!” A woman shouted as she landed on the back of The Rumbling Beast. “Oh Rumbler! You’re not being naughty again, are you?!” She playfully called out as she climbed up its back. It yelped as it felt behind its ears being tickled. “Who’s a good boy?!”
“IT'S TORUNN!” Dunja exclaimed with utmost relief.
The Rumbling Beast happily barked and finally sat down. The large, muscular woman then switched to scratching and petting as she got off of him. Torunn wore heavy-looking, leather armor and had long, brown hair complimented by dazzling green eyes. Scars were here and there, but it was clear she made no effort to hide them. Interestingly she looked similar to Weaver, indicating that they came from the same world, albeit her skin was orange. She continued to dote on the beast as Barna turned back to normal. Maximus could finally sit down without having to fear getting hit, quietly cursing the fact that he would definitely feel all of this the next morning.
“Torunn, you’re a lifesaver…” Barna thanked as he cracked his neck.
“Who’s a good boy?” Torunn continued to ask Rumbler. “You are, yes you are… Alright, Barna, where is she…” Rumbler whined a bit. “Shh, it’s okay boy. She won’t hurt you… or at least I hope she won’t.”
“Torunn?” Dunja asked as she approached with Claudius and Aureolus behind her. The Rumbling Beast started to growl, but was calmed.
Torunn took a good look at Dunja and smiled. “Long time no see, Dunja. So I guess you really have turned over a new leaf after all?”
“Yes, I have…” She took a breath once more. “Oh boy, do I have a lot to unpack… First things first: As a sign of good will, I hereby officially disband The Blades of Dunja, effective immediately. And obviously you probably know why I’m here already.”
“Yup. Also good start, good start. I mean, it’s kind of pointless now, but it’s the thought that counts. I know about how you smashed the Shadow Orb.”
“You do?”
“Aside from it being the talk of the town and the dwindling amount of Shadow Constructs, I snuck into the Iron City to watch your duel with Englehart, ha.”
“Really? Huh, I thought I sensed a familiar presence during all of that…”
Torunn nodded. “You did a damn fine job in that bout, not going to lie. Glad to see that that slime never doused your fighting spirit. As for how I knew to stop by, someone claiming to be a friend of one Mr. Blood-Wraith Raynot hinted that I should sneak over to the colosseum. On a side note, I’m thinking about finding new work once Shadowland is all cleaned up. Does the Iron City have any openings for someone like me?”
Dunja beamed. “Absolutely! Torunn, would you like to join the new Blades of Dunja? In service of The Iron City?”
She liked the sound of this. “Well that seems like a fine deal to me.” Torunn thought it over. “Barna, is this legit?”
“Yes. She’s already discussed this with my brother and the royal court” Barna assured as he petted Rumbler.
“Alright, Dunja. You’re on.”
Dunja took a second to celebrate. “YES! And now I just have to deal with the other two…”
“Don’t worry, Aunt Dunja,” Aureolus reassured her. “We’ll get through this.” He then went over to Torunn. “Hello, Ms. Torunn! I’m Aureolus. Barna adopted me and I’m a friend of Blood-Wraith’s.”
“I heard. It’s a pleasure to meet you, kiddo” She replied as she shook his hand. “Barna… you got two boys and a grandson; When are you going to find yourself a woman?”
Maximus took off his helm to fix it, but focused his gaze on Barna. “I agree with Torunn, grandpa. Why aren’t you married yet?”
Barna was impressed with the craftsmanship Corentin had put into Maximus’ head, but he knew he had to answer the question before they accused him of trying to dodge the subject. “Like I keep saying, I’m still looking for the right woman…” The Rumbling Beast groaned in response.
Torunn laughed. “Rumbler’s right: You need to get off your bum and go get hitched.”
He grumbled. “Alright, Alright, I’ll work on it…” Barna knew Torunn and Claudius were rolling their eyes. “Let’s get Rumbler to the castle before something else happens. You come too, Maximus.”
“Sure thing, grandpa… ow…” He was still sore from getting tossed. “Dunja, may I ask if you had any plans for The Rumbling Beast back when you were our enemy?”
“Aside from agitating him into causing chaos, no. If you’re referring to whatever Gummi did to him, absolutely not. I never wished any harm against Rumbler. I am going to kill that worm next time I see him… Milosh, that is.” The Rumbling Beast responded with a sound that conveyed forgiveness.
