“So there, that’s why we should have Desislav with us,” Dragoslava finished explaining.
Desislav nodded. “Good point… argh, I knew there was something off…”
Sigmund cleared his throat. “Primordials are a strange lot. Some follow the way of God and others follow their own path, for better or for worse. Leif wishes to set things right while the Lich has his own nefarious agenda. What exactly it is I cannot say with authority yet.”
“What else can you tell us about the Lich at this point?” Blood-Wraith inquired.
“Something or someone took a vast majority of the Lich’s power. Not only that, but he suffered a great defeat on one of his attempted conquests in the recent past. Our warriors have been able to fend him off because of this. Fortunately he has shown no interest in the village, despite the tomes and books we hold.” Sigmund had the crystals show the shrine that was being targeted.
Blood-Wraith nodded. “So we just go and retrieve the scrolls then?”
“Not quite,” said Sigmund. “That will draw the Lich to you. Wait for him to appear, then confront him. If you can’t stop him here, you can at least follow him to wherever he goes. The element of surprise is our best weapon at the moment.”
“Very clever, Sigmund,” Desislav noted. “If he lets his guard down, he’ll definitely be vulnerable… but wait, wait-he’s that gullible?”
Sigmund nodded. “In our first encounter, our warriors nearly got him. Any follow up encounters had him ready for us.” He waved his hand, causing some of the battles to be displayed in the crystal. “Another reason for these tactics is that there’s scant reliable information on this primordial, therefore it is key for us to catch him while he’s not looking. We don’t want to provoke him into using his unclear powers or magic. He seems so easy to defeat, yet behaves strangely whenever we encounter him. It’s an incredibly delicate situation for us.”
“So when do you think he will show up again?” Desislav asked.
“I am unsure. In the meantime, I invite all of you to stay with us. After all, I’m sure you’re very curious to learn about the forest, aye Dragoslava?”
“Beg pardon?”
“Well you have tried to seek out The Unending Forest before, haven’t you?”
Dragoslava was stunned. “Excuse me, are you telling me the forest was hiding from me?”
Sigmund laughed. “Some Primordials are very fickle. Now then, I’m particularly hungry and it is noon, so how about we all get a bite to eat?” He then made his way to the doorway, his stomach gurgling loudly.

“So there, that’s why we should have Desislav with us,” Dragoslava finished explaining.
“His strength and muscles?” Blood-Wraith was a bit confused. “What about his expertise in regards to forests?”
“That too!”
“This is quite the detour, but I’ll go along with it if you’re certain,” Leif replied as he flew back to The Iron City.
Dragoslava nodded. “Could you not worry, just a little bit? You’re 5th dimensional after all.”
Another reason why she wanted Desislav along was that she was secretly nervous. A forest with no definitive location had the potential to cause anyone to lose their sense of direction, amongst other potential issues. There was also the Lich, so she felt strength in numbers was ideal. Upon reaching the city, arcing electricity could be seen a ways off. It was likely to be Corentin, but the trio had bigger priorities to deal with. As soon as they reached the tower and landed, Dragoslava zipped off to get Desislav. She then promptly returned with the confused satyr.
“Wait, where are we going again? You’re talking way too fast” he pointed out.
“No time, get on the dragon!” Dragoslava continued to push him towards Leif.
“Don’t worry, I’ll explain on the way,” Leif reassured.
After making sure they had all of the supplies they needed, the group set off once again. This time they were to head towards a pasture that Proteus had told them about. It was an area where The Unending Forest was likely to manifest. Being concerned over Desislav, Blood-Wraith handed him some food he had saved from dinner the night before. Proteus had assured him that they were good to go, but chuckled when he saw the concerned entity sneaking some food out with him. The satyr was more than welcome to visit the ocean after all. Upon eating the food, Desislav noted that it tasted odd. It felt like it had been made for him, but he could not figure out who had made it.
“Well, it looks like we’re here…” Leif announced. “That didn’t take too long.”
Getting off, Desislav looked around the quiet pasture. “You know? It feels like there’s supposed to be a forest here…”
Once everyone was off of his back, Leif sat down. “Unfortunately I can go no further. You three will have to enter the forest alone.”
Dragoslava paused. “Why exactly? Didn’t you say you’d have our backs all the way?”
“Well how would you like it if someone started stepping on your chest?” Tyrant put forth, with Leif hesitantly nodding in agreement. “This forest isn’t your typical forest. We were pushing it with Proteus, but he’s water. He can adapt. The forest doesn’t have that luxury. We could actually do serious damage to him given that he is a lot more sensitive. That’s probably one of the reasons why he reached out to Proteus in the first place.”
Dragoslava sighed. “Ah, I guess so. If you’re that concerned, I’ll take your word for it.”
“I will certainly torch the Lich’s posterior the minute I see him,” Leif assured them. “I have no qualms about making him a little crispy for his past transgressions.” This warranted a mischievous chuckle from both Leif and Tyrant.
Desislav laughed. “And here I thought the drama between the elven families was spicy… Alright, let’s roll. I think I see something off in the distance.”
At first it seemed like the three were going nowhere. They traveled forward, but the horizon showed no change. Looking back to Leif, he was difficult to make out. The three had traveled roughly a mile at this point. Upon turning back to their journey, something strange happened. A forest was suddenly before them. They all concluded that this had to be The Unending Forest. Entering it was surreal, like they were entering another realm. There was a gentle breeze, the leaves on the trees rustled, and the sky was in twilight. Animals chirped and yipped while strange orbs of light drifted about. Desislav had to stop to take it all in as he was hit with a wave of nostalgia.
“This… This brings me back.”
“Are you okay, Desislav?” Blood-Wraith asked.
The satyr nodded. “Absolutely. This place reminds me of my homeland, before we got chased out. God, if only I could bring my people here, I would. I can feel this place teeming with life”
“So what do you think we should look for, guys?” Dragoslava asked. “I’m lost just trying to wrap my mind around this place…”
Desislav thought about that for a moment. “We should start with any denizens we can find. They should be able to help us around and inform us of any anomalies.”
Walking through the forest felt timeless. Things did not progress traditionally, rather they just existed. The trio had walked for some time, yet felt no serious exhaustion. Occasionally a small animal would skitter away from them or a bird would fly off. At some point it felt like they were being watched, which they rationalized as a random animal. During a quick rest, Blood-Wraith got up to go look around on his own. As he went to see if he could spot anything, the feeling came back.
“Why does it feel like something’s following me?” That thing then leapt out of the bushes and pounced on Blood-Wraith.
“Blood!?” Dragoslava exclaimed, hearing yelling and shouting in the distance.
“You don’t think it’s the Lich, do you!?” Desislav asked, ready to move.
“No, but I’m not going to just sit around…”
The two rushed towards the direction of the noise. What they found was Blood-Wraith running around, shaking his left arm wildly. “GET OFF GET OFF GET OFF!!!” he shouted. A small humanoid was clinging to him, trying to bite and taste him.
“YOU DON’T BURN, FIRE!” FIRE DOESN’T BURN?”
Desislav stepped in. “Alright! Hold still, I’ll get her off!” He then grabbed the little thing and tugged. At first she refused to let go with a growl, but then he used his strength to pry her off Blood’s arm.
“What in the Sam Hill was that!?” Blood-Wraith demanded to know.
The small creature seemed to be a young girl of some kind. Her body had a humanoid shape, but her skin was like wood and her limbs were covered in bark. Two small horns sprouted from her scarlet hair and thorny vines grew from her back. A glowing, yellow orb could be seen through the eye and mouth openings. She squirmed and growled as Desislav held her at a distance… even though her growls had the intimidation factor of a wolf pup failing to scare off a squirrel.
“She’s a… tree person, I guess?” Desislav figured.
“Aw, she’s adorable!” Dragoslava said warmly. “Hi there, sweetie” The girl promptly hissed at her… like a kitten fighting with its siblings.
“AUDA! You leave those travelers alone!” a vastly older voice called out. A similar individual to the girl approached, well up there in age. The bark that covered her body was old, her light-brown hair was similar to willow branches, and a glowing blue light shone from both of her eyes.
Desislav set Auda down. “Is this your daughter?”
“Oh no, I’m just her nanny when her grandfather or uncles are too busy to look after her.” Auda then ran behind her.
“She tried to eat my arm…” Blood-Wraith stated, annoyed.
Dragoslava patted her brother on the back. “Aw come on, Blood. She was just playing.”
Desislav cleared his throat. “Well it’s a pleasure to meet both of you. I’m Desislav Robles, this is Dragoslava Raynot-also known as Dragoslava the indomitable, and that’s Blood-Wraith.” Dragoslava subtly averted her gaze and blushed, a little embarrassed.
“I am Eleanor Albronda and it’s nice to meet all of you…”
“Fire doesn’t burn? Why doesn’t that fire burn?” Auda mumbled.
Eleanor shook her head. “Just wait until your grandfather hears about this… would you three like a place to rest? Our village isn’t far from here.”
“That would be most excellent, Eleanor,” Desislav answered. “Lead the way”
As they walked, Eleanor elaborated about her village and explained that Auda’s grandfather was their chief. Auda had a habit of wandering off and getting into trouble, much to their chagrin. It was also clarified that Auda was older than she appeared. Eleanor further explained that while they did not have a name for their people, outsiders called them Tree People and they accepted it. They were trees at the end of the day, so naming their people felt a bit arbitrary.
Reaching the village was a fascinating sight. It was a mix of large tents, houses, buildings, and shops. Many Tree People moved about here and there, each with their own visual quirks, just like the trees around them. The outsiders definitely drew the attention of several villagers, especially Blood-Wraith. Eventually the group arrived at the chief’s home, a large three story house on the opposite end of the village. Stepping inside, they were greeted by the smell of aged wood and various plants ranging from flowers to herbs.
Once upstairs, everyone entered a large room that was wide open, yet fairly messy. “Your granddaughter was up to no good again, Sigmund…” Eleanor announced.
“Oh? My, what misadventures did she embark upon this time?”
“She pounced on these fine travelers.”
“Travelers?”
Auda ran over to Sigmund. “Grandpa! That fire doesn’t burn!”
“Fire that doesn’t burn you say? How strange…”
Facing a large crystal formation at the end of the room was a tall Tree Person whose voice was gruff and aged. Turning revealed that he was incredibly old, yet full of vigor. His skin was coarse and dull, a large beard hung from his face, branches grew from his arms, and his body sounded like creaking wood as he moved. Of particular note was his core, which was like a ball of fire. This oddity caught Desislav’s attention, feeling strangely familiar. Both Dragoslava and Blood-Wraith were awed by Sigmund’s mere presence.
“Well now, what do we have here?” Sigmund studied the three. “If we’re in the company of the one who defies the Cosmos, then you must be the travelers the forest foretold of.”
Desislav bowed in respect. “It’s an honor to meet you, Chief Sigmund.” Blood-Wraith and Dragoslava also bowed.
“My boy, we’ve met once before. Don’t you remember that fateful day during the great war?”
Desislav froze. “What? No…”
Sigmund laughed. “My plan to give you a window of escape was rather hair-brained. Although in hindsight, that was truly an awe-inspiring way to go out… if incredibly painful.”
“NO FLIPPING WAY!” Desislav gave Sigmund a firm handshake, like a brother in arms would. This was followed by Sigmund giving him a fatherly hug. “Elder Tree! So you did make it after all! Look, I know there was no other way, but I am so sorry for what I had to do to you.”
Sigmund laughed once more. “It’s alright Desislav. If you hadn’t followed my plan, I wouldn’t be here with my dear granddaughter. It’s better to go out in a blaze of glory than to merely fade away.”
“Sigmund, you saved my back, so now it’s my turn to return the favor...”
Blood-Wraith approached the two. “Chief Sigmund? On behalf of Leif and Proteus, we’re here to stop The Lich of Old.”
“Ah, that-The forest spoke of the Dragon and the Ocean sending you three to help rid it of the rogue primordial. Although I did not expect you three to be so unique, truth be told. Anyways, The Lich has been defiling the sacred shrines, seeking information on a pool of liquid metal. From what can be gathered, he appears to be seeking this metal so he can achieve immortality. True immortality.” Sigmund then waved his hand in front of the crystals, causing them to show a strange figure. “ I dare not go after him, lest my people go unprotected.”
Dragoslava was taking notes. “Uh-huh… Wait! Dragon? What Dragon?”
Desislav facepalmed. “Oh of course! It all makes sense now! Dragoslava, Leif is The Dragon of Old.” Back at the pasture, Leif sneezed.
“Yeah, it was kind of obvious, looking back on it…” Blood-Wraith pointed out.
“Reasoning, Blood?” Dragoslava was a little confused.
“I mean… look at who he is, why he’s helping out so much, and his connection to Proteus…”
“That too!”
“This is quite the detour, but I’ll go along with it if you’re certain,” Leif replied as he flew back to The Iron City.
Dragoslava nodded. “Could you not worry, just a little bit? You’re 5th dimensional after all.”
